PlayStation Now Open Beta – Our Journey Begins

As we announced back at CES, PlayStation Now (PS Now) is the first-ever game streaming service available on a game console, where you can quickly access a rich and expanding library of PlayStation 3 (PS3) games from our cloud servers. Since January, PS Now has been in Private Beta for select gamers across the country, and I’m happy to announce that the Open Beta will be available to all PlayStation 4 (PS4) owners in the U.S. and Canada starting tomorrow.

As part of this Open Beta, PS4 users will see PS Now titles fully integrated into PlayStation Store, available to be streamed for various rental durations. Check out the video walkthrough of how it all works:

During the PS Now Open Beta, PS4 users will see a diverse library of more than 100 titles to rent, with more added regularly. PS Now will offer a variety of rental periods depending on the game, including 7-days, 30-days or 90-days, as well as a short 4-hour duration, so players can sample the experience first.

With a strong and stable broadband connection, visual and gameplay quality will be much like what you’re used to with other PS3 games. PS Now will also feature cloud game saves, as well as support for other popular network features such as Trophies, friend lists and leaderboards. You can also play seamlessly online with other people on PS Now, or even players who have the downloadable or disc based version of the game. As you know, the PS3 catalog of games is massive and incredibly diverse, and we’re thrilled to make these epic experiences available to PS4 first, followed by our other PlayStation platforms in the coming months.

Since we’re still in Beta, and in the very early days of PS Now, we plan to continue to collect feedback during this Open Beta phase to make further refinements to the service, so please provide us feedback once you’ve experienced the service.

We want to thank those that have been participating in the PS Now Private Beta for their time, dedication and valuable feedback, which have helped us continue to shape the service.

You will immediately see a clear breakdown of what’s included with game rentals, so it’s easier to tell what content you’re getting with your rental, especially since several games offered through PS Now include DLC that increase the value of the offering. Also, in a few weeks, you will start seeing reduced pricing on some 4-hour rentals which will appear at $1.99.

In addition, we’ve heard you loud and clear for an update on a PS Now subscription option and want to reassure you that we are working on it. We think PS Now represents the next step toward the future of gaming and we’re excited to have the PlayStation Nation come along with us on the beginning of this journey.

  • BTW: what happened to playing all of our PS2 games on Vita? The ones on PSN or to come to it?
Also, did you reset the counters for the closed beta? I had a game to start to day and it disappeared before I logged on

  • Can someone please provide a link to the list of available PS NOW titles or list them here?

  • I don’t really care about Playstation Now streaming rubbish. Give us the option to play all our ps1 & ps2 disc based games on ps4. Sony can also sell the whole catalogue of ps1 & ps2 games digitally on the store for a reasonable price.

Sony would triple there ps4 sales easily. Forget about this streaming rubbish.

  • Nascar ’14 – $5.99… = 4 hours – $8.99 = 7 days – $18.99 = 30 days – $39.99 ! = 90 days..
    *dies, explodes, then dies again*

Also it’s kind of hard to leave feedback if you take the page down from the main PS.Blog page.

  • Well Playstation Nation, I’m out.. Think I stirred up enough Hatorade for the day, I’ll keep checking the beta every day until I find a free game to test!..

P.s. I do love you SONY, just wish you listened to your customers more.

Thanks for the last of us!!!

  • @strangeheaven . . . they would triple their sales, but would have to admit wasting 380 million dollars on the purchase of gaikai. . .

  • Is there a chance that we could import game saves to and from our PS3s to the PSNow cloud? I would gladly pay a subscription fee or even rent some games if it means I could continue where I left off while I’m out and about on my vita, while I have to share the entertainment system, or I don’t have access to a game anymore because I borrowed it or rented it when I first started.

  • Playstation Now lol, what happens if your router plays up? I can’t see this being that popular the ps3 never had a great deal of good games like ps1 or ps2.

  • Yes, game saves are transferable, purchased games are not

  • Good thing you guys shut down that EA Access thing. Otherwise, PS4 owners may actually have options, and gamers hate that.

  • @MaliciousLesh . . . Lol I know, but sony have made plenty of mistakes before and admitted it. I do like sonys honesty sometimes.

  • They could easily make the 380 mil back just from console sales alone, and give PS Now to the guys without consoles, it’s a win win.

  • The pricing model in place currently for PS Now will prevent me from subscribing in any way. Most prices that have been that im seeing, i can get a physical copy, brand new, and hold on to it longer than 90 days. With playstation plus i also recieve an hour free to demo pretty much every game on the store. Why cant that first hour be included with Playstation Now?

  • one1sh0t_0nek1ll

I hate your pricing Sony. Lower it and make millions…. WHY DON’T YOU? HEAR WHAT YOUR CUSTOMERS ARE SAYING IT SHOULD TO TAKE THAT LONG TO UNDERSTAND YOUR PRICING SUCKS

  • one1sh0t_0nek1ll

    LOWER YOUR PRICING ON EVERYTHING

  • Every person complaining doesn’t realize sony is a business. They are trying to make money, they can’t make everything extremely cheep to please their non loyal fans. Second this is a beta. To all the people complaining about the 4 hour price, it’s the same idea as making one water bottle expensive, and making a package of waters have better value.

  • What about first part games like The Ico and Shadow of the Colossus collection, Killzone Trilogy, Resistance Trilogy, Uncharted trilogy, Infamous Collection, Heavy Rain, and Beyond: Two Souls? Will they be available? I only see Killzone 3 as of now.

  • I feel that a Netflix style rental will be best suited for this model. Most people wont pay $20 for 90 days because the game is worth half of that on PlayStation 3. Maybe 10-15 dollars per month for unlimited games would suit gamers the best.

  • @466 yes, same as the water bottles. But some titles on there are 8.99$ for a 90 days rental when the game was on sale a few weeks to a few months ago for 10$ … or can be easily be bought at a bargain bin in a big retail store for 10$… the pricing model is not to scale with other offerings…

  • Is it possible to take cross play (or games I’ve already purchased) into account? I was scrolling and saw Oddword Stranger’s Wrath, a game I already own for PS3 and Vita, and honestly thought it was a bit weird to have to rent it again just to play on the PS4. I would love for there to be some synchronization between my account and the PS Now. Also, as with everyone else, I would only use it if there was some sort of subscription level offered (or at the very least games were discounted thanks to my ps plus account). I love the idea and am itching to use it, but right now it financially doesn’t make much sense.

  • PS Now is a waste of time and money! The PS4 is powerful enough to emulate PS1&PS2 games and put them on sale for $5 to $10 dollars which each week we getting more and more games. For PS3 games they should make a poll which one to make and offer them for $10-$15 each month.

  • I would like to see Playstation 2 games brought back with Online Multiplayer. I think that would be a fantastic feature to have for the service. I have yet to stop playing SOCOM 2 and would love to see it brought to PS Now it would be glorious online.

  • Just want to give my 2 cents in on this. If we can stream our current digital library of PS3 games I would gladly pay an additional subscription fee for this service if it’s reasonable, lord know how many PS3 games I have on my backlog that I really want to get to and playing them on my PS4/Vita would be huge for me. I guess what i mean is…$10 a month or $5 if you have PS+ and you get your current PS3 digital library for free as well and the rentals if you are interested to me sounds fair. Just a thought. =)

  • Just a question….uh…..scared to ask but will there be some……FREE titles for PS Now?

  • I am not for or against PS NOW, but I think everyone wants PS NOW to be this like Netflix. Does Netflix offer every single movie available on DVD available for streaming? The answer is NO. Does Netflix care if you already own the physical DVD of a movie, so you shouldn’t be charged for it? The answer is again NO.

So, for all of you expecting PS Now to go to a flat subscription rate, please don’t expect every single PS1, PS2, and PS3 game to be available. It will only be a select number of games available. I think everyone both for and against PS Now just needs to calm down. It’s OK to voice an opinion and to voice what you want to see, but everybody, please remember, this is a BETA!!! This is not the final product.

I think the thing to watch is how Sony reacts to all of this feedback and how they respond. That will tell you if this is just a money grab or if they are really trying to put out the best gaming experience of Playstation.

  • I am attempting to stream a game, so i test my connection and its good to go. Then, i got to the game, and it tests it again, and i fail. I can safely tell you i am running a 25+ mbps connection, verified by both the Speedtest app and website. Plus that is what I’m paying comcast for, so it better be at least 25. I have 5 times the recommended 5 mbps connection for streaming, but i constantly fail the connection test. Sometimes it’ll be all good, as i mentioned, but then it will do another test, and I’ll fail. Nothing else is on my connection, i have attempted restarting my ps4 and router many times, to no avail. Maybe a bug, maybe my ps4, who knows.

  • Pricing is ridiculous. Also, I wish you can buy games on PS Now and just have them in your streaming library.

  • Why screw around with the blockbuster business model when the Netflix model is so efficient. Think about it, Netflix gives me all I can watch but people only really binge watch one or two series and then they move on to other things. It’s the classic case of the eyes being bigger than the stomach. So if your worried about losing money letting people sample the buffet don’t be.

I think you should break all the games up into genres, and when I’m done playing those games suggest to me games of similar genres or from the same developer. The future of game streaming should help me discover gems from that massive backlog otherwise I’ll probalby end up playing all the same stuff I already own.

Finally like Netflix titles should be constantly flowing into and out of the PS Now service, that will give me incentive to keep my subscription current. (Finish old games before they go, play the new stuff when it comes in)

I’m open to working for the PS Now service as a consultant, or a full time employee. I also have some ideas on integrating video streaming to create Lets Play Style PS NOW sessions which could lead to monetization of the service outside of direct payment. If you’re interested you have my PSN.

  • If I can buy Darksiders II for $18 new on Amazon, don’t even dare offer it for $29.99 for 90 days. Wow. I know your argument… you can’t play Darksiders II on a PS4, you have to own a PS3 for that price. PS Now offer your the capability to do that! While on the surface it seems like a good argument, you are hindering people more than helping them. This service should blow people’s minds, not make them second guess for taking the plunge. It should be something that people want to throw money at, not further question your business ethic. Don’t penalize people for not owning a PS3, reward them for being an “early adopter” of your promising, but currently horribly priced service.

Overall, I’m severely disappointed. With the GREAT value PS+ is, this is a joke. Also, I think you can rent Guacamelee for 14.99 for 90 days, when you actually can buy it on PS4 for the same PRICE! Come on… think a little more…

You guys need to be on top of the market trend when it comes to pricing. You guys need to have deals, bargains, promotions. This beta should have a trial period. You tell us to remember it’s a “beta” and be sympathetic yet you are willing to charge us “real” dollars. Lol.

  • HATE_REPUBLICANS

Playstation now is a joke! Over pricing like no other!

  • HATE_REPUBLICANS

So sick of hearing sony say COMING SOON… everything is always coming soon coming soon.. Just don’t release anything unless its ready NOW. Cause we all know what coming soon is… 5 years down the road and countless delays before we get there. Thats the sony way. So don’t even tell commenters that playstation now is coming to vita and ps3 VERY SOON. Stop lying to us. We heard this so called youtube app for ps4 was COMING SOON months and months ago this year. Where is that at Sony? Xbox one has had a youtube app for almost half a year now and its been months and months that xbox one can upload dvr clips to youtube straight off xbox one from its youtube app. Yet ps4 is lost what its doing I guess, just pathetic. No ps home for vita or ps4 yet either and yet it said it was a beta for over 6 years on ps3. Everything is never ready on sony devices I swear, they use this BETA excuse to not do their job and excuse ripping us off stating its just a beta. How long will now be a beta. 6 more years lol. Sony sony sony. Get it together!

  • HATE_REPUBLICANS

Sony needs go fire its whole store crew and system update crew. They all mess up weekly and never do anything update wise right or what we constantly ask for. Where is mp3 support? Where is custom themes and dynamic these support on ps4 or at least let us customize the home screen colors and layouts for crying out loud. My xbox one lets me edit its colors I mean come one sony. My xbox one gets update monthly and not just stupid excuses called system stability updates which isn’t that its that you are making sure their is no one hacking the ps4 and ps3 doing copyright on games and calling the small updates stability updates. I’m not stupid to what your doing with those stupid stability updates all the time.

  • HATE_REPUBLICANS

If so y was so driven on listening to us to in here as much as they release stability system updates which isn’t that by the way maybe the ps4 can get features worth a dang. Its so limited in features and good games unlike my xbox one which I play way more than my ps4 and thats sad.

  • A little perspective first:

I’m the biggest Playstation supporter there is. I have owned and still own every console Sony’s released in the United States (I even bought PSP Go!), I possess a sizable library of games for each system, I am a PS Plus subscriber, and I generally just evangelize all the positive aspects of your consoles and games. I wouldn’t call myself a fanboy, just an ardent supporter who enjoys the Playstation ecosystem.

However, I’m here to proclaim (and yes I know it’s still in beta) that PS Now is simply not going to succeed and will likely result in the complete loss off all the positive public mindshare Sony gained since their legendary E3 victory if something SERIOUS does not happen to their pricing.

There needs to be a subscription model, and it needs to be VERY reasonable. There also needs to be implemented PS1 and PS2 backwards compatibility VERY early in its lifespan.

I want to love PS Now, but as of right now it’s simply not good enough, and is too expensive. I also suggest that EVERY title should be eligible for a FREE 1 hour trial period for PS Plus subscribers.

    That is all.

  • So, are we going to have to rent games that we already have digital versions of? Is there going to be some kind of streaming service where you can play your digital PS3 games on your PS4?

  • This is too much. These prices for some of these, mainly 4 hour, and 90 day rentals are really bad. Even if it’s on a game by ham basis, it might end up being the better investment to just buy the game. Sometimes new, but likely to be used. Might even save a buck or two, and we keep the game for essentially ever. There’s still a lot to be done here, and I’m just one of many that feels that way.

  • These PS Now prices are worse than the overpriced Vita cards that killed the Vita. PS Now dies at these prices. Why “rent” for prices you could buy the physical copy for? Truely puzzled and outright dissapointed, unfortunately not surprised after being part of the closed beta. Sony, Sony, Sony…. how can you get this so wrong!?

  • Would really like to be able to purchase the games as well. I would be much more willing to dump 19.99 on Uncharted 3 to buy vs. random amount for a weekly rental. A lot of the appeal of your PS exclusives are they have a lot of replay value(I can play Uncharted 1-3 in a marathon multiple times, same with GoW, Metal Gear Solid 4, etc)and being able to ONLY rent those games is a bit of a shortchange. I mean even if you allow it as a PS+exclusive where we’re able to purchase the games instead of rent, I’d be ok with that. I’ll more than likely be a PS+ member as long as I have a Vita and PS4(gotta love free copies of Gravity Rush and Uncharted GOlden Abyss).

  • Will there be any way that after beta when PS now is out that we can purchase games instead of renting a game for a period of time

  • Anyone else find it a little fishy that Jack has only 4 replies when we’ve added almost 500 comments (mostly negative) wonder if SONY is even reading this? It’s probably good if there not with my 40+ negative comments just this morning lol, just wish they’d listen to us for once and give us what we’re willing to PAY FOR!!!! Not what they want us to pay for. As of right now the PS Store on PS3 is probably the best there is.

We want BC and the option to purchase the entire PS library from the PS4 store! Please take my money!!

  • 4-hour rentals should not even exist. 1-day rentals should ALL be $.99 to $1.99. Why would I pay $20 to rent a game I can buy for $10? It is pretty ironic that Sony called out EA’s service as being bad value and then turned around and did this the next day. Is this April Fools in July? LOL

  • this is the best thing that could have made up but one that can be free like I want to lease the lost planet 2 greetings from chile!

  • Okay I swear this is my last COMPLAINT lol, so I just went through the PS Now store again and noticed the prices change every time I go in, and I noticed that NASCAR ’14 is $39 for a 3 month rental or I can buy it brand spanking new for $29 with free shipping, I need help, what’s the better option? Lol

  • CFetus,

I feel the same exact way. A day’s rental should be no more than 2 dollars. Maybe these expensive rentals would be good for casual players who only want to play some of Playstation’s biggest past hits on their Bravia TV, but for us serious gamers who own consoles, we need a subscription model.

  • If Sony wants this service to succeed and get used, they need to do two things:

    1. Implement some sort of verification system to allow streaming of classic PS1 and PS2 titles owned on disc, or at LEAST offer a discount on the ability to purchase a license to stream the title.

    2. Offer a subscription model. I say up to $14.99 monthly for non Plus members, and no more than $4.99 monthly for Plus members. Note, these prices would be assuming the game library improves and that the PS1 and PS2 games are added.

  • @M_K_Sniper : it’s typical. Any blog post, they only reply for an hour or two then there’s no more replies. Any blog post i’ve seen in the past followed the same pattern. Although i understand, they can’t check on all the posts really, they have quite a few at once sometimes.

  • So basically Zone of Enders HD for 10 bucks/7 days and it’s $12 brand new disc based all good smelling in Amazon.
F1 2013 50 USD for 3 months, when it’s 40 USD disc based on Amazon, all new and fresh smelling. Oh and they announced version 2014 to come out in a few months for PS3 (around February for PS4).
Fez (guessing 80% of PS4 users are by now PS+ subscribers) is FREE next week so what’s the point in including it there.
So basically I have to PAY a PREMIUM to use a BETA with old games available at a very affordable price disc-based.

Thanks Sony, I’ll pass, go home you’re drunk and cool story brah.

  • When we will be able to broadcast our gameplay on Twitch? I rented Way of the Samurai 3 and want to broadcast gameplay, but it’s not letting me. Will this be a feature that will be added later or it’s not going to happen at all?

  • Don’t forget that Amazon is free 2 day shipping for Prime members with UNLIMITED streaming,,, wait!! What?!.. Unlimited for $100 a year you say? And I can watch a vast majority of free movies and shows and stream free music? Where do I sign?… Oh wait I’m already a prime member lol.
