PS Plus: July’s Free Game Lineup Goes Live Tuesday

This month, PlayStation Plus members can download Towerfall Ascension and Strider on PlayStation 4. Towerfall Ascension is a great excuse to invite a few friends over for an evening of fierce fun and local competition. It features simple mechanics, but it’ll take some time to master shooting and catching arrows, head stomping and strategically using power ups. Our second PS4 game is Strider, a reboot of one of gaming’s most renowned action series. As you aim to assassinate a heavily guarded target, you’ll employ a plethora of cyber-ninja skills and upgrades you collect along the way.

On PS3 we have the critically acclaimed action-horror title Dead Space 3 and a physics puzzle game called Vessel. Dead Space 3 continues the story of Issac Clarke and his constant run-ins with the freaky Church of Unitology and their Necromorphs. A new co-op mode is a nice addition to the franchise, and playing with a friend will unlock some exclusive content. If you enjoy puzzle games, try out Vessel – a title with an incredible liquid physics engine. Each puzzle requires you to think about the properties of various forms of liquid, whether it’s lava and steam or chemicals, in order to minimize the threat of chaotic robots you created.

Finally, on PS Vita Plus members get Muramasa Rebirth and Doki-Doki Universe. Muramasa Rebirth is one of the prettiest games on Vita, with equally lovely backdrops and boss designs. You’ll hack and slash via two different characters’ perspectives, a possessed princess and fugitive ninja, and you can craft consumables as well as new swords. Then there’s the unique experience of Doki-Doki Universe, where you’ll explore the universe as an adorable robot appropriately named QT3. As you investigate what humanity means, the game will track your decisions and develop a personality profile, so you’ll actually learn more about yourself as you play.

Since all these games will be free for PS Plus members starting next Tuesday, July 1st, we will wrap any additional Plus updates into our weekly Store post each Tuesday.

  • Dead Space 3……

The only Dead Space I didn’t have in my collection! Hot Dawg!

  • When will we get Motorstorm apocalypse free?

  • At least there’s Dead Space. Feels like I’m back in the 180 with all of these side scrollers.

  • 1980s… where is my edit options

  • – TowerFall : One of those I see around, but still’ven’t actually looked into.
    – Strider : Agh! Why I no PS4? But, given it’s from a big publisherrr… Yep, no Cross-Buy. Really, now.

    – Dead Space 3 : Y’know, in the past I’ve asked for Dead Space, but I always meant the first one. I’m sure the presense of microtransactions helped this’n get the Plus-push.
    – Vessel : One of those I’ve had for PC for forever, but like TowerFall, I’ve yet to actually look into the title.

    – Muramasa Rebirth : Here’s the true highlight of the month! Ugh, need to get a Vita sometime, first-party abandonment be damned.
    – Doki-Doki Universe : I remember this having a lot of paid add-ons, but some freebs, too. Guess I could hypothetically make use of ’em.

Overall, a month that doesn’t grab my interests particularly, and only one title I’ve any hype over.

…Oh, Doki’s Cross-Buy? Well, there goes that “hypothetically”. Really, Sony needs to get up on pushing for Cross-Buy, especially on feature-identical titles (glares at Ubisoft’s NA branch), and the Blog needs to get up on accurately conveying when it’s implemented.

  • a couple of nice tittles for free, well dead space 3 is alright too i guess, not as great as the second but alright, but what i really wanted to be playing this summer on my ps4 was eso :/

  • Did I say one title I’m hyped for? Sorry, Strider’s got enough hype to count as a second, and I wouldn’t doubt myself to actually like TowerFall and Vessel.

  • Well I still have no reason to turn on my vita then.

  • In the past 5 months, I have found no reasons to renew Playstation Plus. Once my year ends, I might go month to month.

  • R.I.P. Instant game collection

  • Decent update, look forward to playing Strider. Hopefully as PS4 grows we will see some full retail game offerings. So far it’s understanding why we have Indies and once in a while PSN game.

  • Ps plus needs to do something else. Why would you buy games any more if you can get free on plus known all 6 games and want to join plus but what a waste of a month I feel I should get a coupon or credit on something.

  • Bought Muramasa on sale months ago. Not annoyed as the money went to Vanillaware.

  • Nooo!!!I’m getting tired of the Indiestation 4.Couldnt you just give us at least one AAA game every 2 months on the IGC?
I will give you one more month if you keep messin up the ps4 IGC i’m switching to Ps3

  • @67 is that any different than a game getting released in late october/early november and then beig on sale for black friday

  • An AWESOME update for PS Plus. I’m only missing Dragon’s Crown for PS Vita (offered in EU), but Muramasa will make up for it for now.

  • One day, all the new games go to rapture… I mean PS+. All the games are to end up there at some point.

  • Muramasa is absolutely fantastic. Vanillaware can do no wrong in my eyes. I hope someday they come out with an HD remake of Odin’s Sphere.

The Tales of the Nekomata and Genroku Legends are both great DLC also.

  • @115 Cool story Bro

  • TowerFall Ascension’s lack of online co-op kills my interest in that game, so its inclusion this month is meh. However, the rest of July’s offerings, while definitely not the best of Plus imo, are adequate.

  • Any idea when the last 3 DLCs for muramasa come out? I have been waiting forever. LOVE this game.

  • Why PS Vita games are so sad>??????

Europe had DRAGON’S CROWN (PS VITA)
and for July they have LEGO BATMAN 2 (PS VITA)

and we get Muramasa which EU had on April.. and this DOKI DOKO??? this sad poor game???

    Come on…

  • Sad to see PS Plus getting worse every year for us PS3 owners.. A few years ago it wasn’t unusual to see 5-10 new PS3/PSN games in a single month!!

Then that number decreased to 3 or 4 if we were lucky, lately it’s been 3, with one retail game every month.. but at least there was the Instant Game Collection with some AAA-titles added to that.
And now we’re apparently down to 2 every month, with 2 additional games for vita which all of 5 people own… oh, and a couple of indie games for the PS4 of course… and no IGC AAA-games anymore.

  • All of the games for this month are very good.

My favorites are Muramasa and Dead Space 3.

Thank you Kristine for the preview video.

  • It doesn’t need to be in PS Plus, but I would love to see Intelligent Qube in the PS Store. It’s my wife’s favorite game and she still has her PS1 copy, but we only have a PS3 and PS4, and I’d love to add it to our digital collection on the PS3 as a surprise for her.

I hope someone in charge reads this, because I’ve been asking for this for a long time.

  • @christkrusher

2 of them are already out, there’s 2 more that are still in development. No clue when they’re coming out.

    @BG808s

I’m glad I’m 1 of those 5 people who own a Vita, I play my Vita more than my ps3 & ps4 combined. And I don’t mean remote play.

  • To everyone who hasn’t purchased Towerfall yet, you’re in for a real treat. The game’s absolutely outstanding when played with friends.

BahumatIsBack on June 25th, 2014 at 1:52 pm said: “The insane amount of focus on indies across all your platforms has been very off putting to say the least.”

    1. There have been plenty of non-indie games in the IGC since the beginning.

    2. Only half of the games in this post are indies.

    3. Indies will be all that’s left to give at some point, since the more expensive games are not only smaller in number, but also still making better profits at retail, especially with the PS4. Thus, no need for publishers to send their money-makers to the IGC for a smaller return. It is business, after all.

    4. An all-AAA IGC would cost more than $50, guaranteed. (Possibly around $100.) Then you’d complain about the price hike. An all-indie IGC could be less expensive, around $20-$30. Then you’d complain about the disparity between the two. A balance of both is best for everyone, and the masses concur, as revealed by statistics.

    5. You have the option of not re-subscribing to Plus if it’s not for you.

  • Pretty terrible month again. The only good game there (Muramasa) was on sale not even a month ago. I guess I’ll stop buying anything on sale on psn anymore because it means that it will soon go to plus.

Ps3 offering could be worse but it’s pretty bad as well. Can’t really comment on ps4 because I don’t own one.

  • PrimeroIncognito

As for the games offered here – Strider is awesome, Vessel is average.

I don’t know about the rest.

Solid value across the board, though, as usual, especially considering that Plus costs a maximum of 97 cents per week, and less than that for those of us who have taken advantage of various discounts and promos over the years.

    :)

  • This service is part of why I became a PS4 early adopter. I was going to miss out on mucho bucks of free content long before the price drops.

Same with my Vita. PS+ has made all the difference.

  • Can I play Strider in the PSVita too? :)

  • Nice Plus Offerings for July. I’ve been wanting Strider :) Curious about Towerfall & Muramasa. Hadn’t looked into Vessel. Doki Doki & Dead Space 4 both looked OK upon initial viewing if You were into either of those Game Genres, but both sound Like ‘Micro-Transactions/DLC’ are needed in order to Enjoy/Play the Games, so I won’t be getting either of Them. Doki-Doki looks like it was Made for Children & sounded Like it had DLC needed to Unlock the Entire Game, which kinda seems like the Creators wanted to Have Children ‘Upgrade’ The Game thru Purchases not done by/with consent of the Parents. Toejam, Earl & I are Ashamed. Why haven’t They Re-Booted the ‘Toejam & Earl’ Franchise. I loved the Mechanics of the 1st Growing Up & thought the 2nd was a Gorgeous, Fun & Funny Platformer. I don’t want to see Them in 3d, They belong in the Sprite 2d World with Funky Music. Add a ‘Trap’ Music Fan & a ‘Dubstep’ Alien as New Friends for 4 Player Couch Co-Op Experience

  • I’m currently torn between renewing my PS+ subscription and letting it lapse. I don’t own a PS4 (and don’t plan to for the foreseeable future) and barely game on my PS3 now, so I keep my subscription essentially for my Vita, but the value I got out of PS+ since the last couple of months was pretty poor in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong, I love indies, but I don’t think they’re worth a $50 subscription.

I guess the quality of PS+ freebies we’ll get for the months of August and September will be a deciding factor for me. So far, July looks “ok”, but if Sony start giving only indies and old PSP games again for the Vita (even if they’re good ones), I guess I won’t renew. Since Sony made PS+ almost mandatory now for the PS4, it seems like they’re not trying to make the service attractive anymore as people are subscribing anyway…

PS+ was awesome value when the IGC started. Now, it’s still nice but nothing more than that.

  • Looking forward to strider tower fall looks ok I’m sure I will download but don’t know if I would like that type of game. Doki universe looks ok but muramassa looks interesting. The ps3 games are ok I guess dead space 3 is alright in my eyes and the other game I never even heard of will see Tuesday what is the real winners in this update.

  • i figured it was going to be strider. i don’t really care for strider, and kind of don’t like him after having to fight against him in umvc3, but i’ll take it anyways.

  • PrimeroIncognito

@ Anyone who feels shafted… just look up at those 6 games being offered for July. Then remember that each month of Plus costs no more than $4.17, and less than that if you signed up during a promo.

Seriously, look at those 6 games up there. Are you really going to say that those 6 games (some of them are really good) are not worth a measly $4.17?

That’s $4.17 for all 6 games, COMBINED. Not $4.17 each. (Not even factoring in the subscriber discounts and cloud storage!)

No offense, since this isn’t directed at anyone in particular, but you’d have to be an absolute idiot or the most spoiled brat of all time to not appreciate what’s going on here. FOR REAL. The value is off-the-charts amazing.

  • PS4 only gets indies, when will we get a AAA title? which one I will be satisfied.

  • So very excited. Love it!

  • WOW ALL OF THEM ARE AWESOME! THANKS SONY! <3

  • @PrimerIncognito – There you go again putting your own spin on what people say so you can try to feel superior with your “explanations” and “corrections”. Out of all the people that were actually complaining about indies on the IGC you focus on my post so you can try to start your little nightly internet debate. I’ve told you before I have no interest in such petty matters

  • My comment about the indie focus was actually about how the Vita has been abandoned by Sony except for a controller/second screen for PS4 and how Project Morpheus has been billed as an “indie playground”. That’s all fine and well that indies are coming to PSN. If any of them look good (which they are very few and very far between) then I’ll buy them. I don’t wait around on the IGC to get my games. I only have plus for the discounts which have been pretty lax as well recently. Sadly, most of your precious indies that you defend on the blog every night are poorly made shovelware. The problem that I was referring to with the focus on indies is how Sony seems to think indies are the future and that everybody loves indies. Recently Sony’s been trying to justify their complete abandonment of the Vita with this indie focus nonsense. We didn’t buy Vitas for indies even though Shahid Ahmad said so

Let me go ahead and stop you now. Don’t respond to me. Stop picking my posts out of the hundreds on here to focus on. Find something better to do with your time. I’m not interested in anything you have to say

  • Oh, and please stop being a company shill. Let people make up their own minds without you towing the company line. M’kay? Thanks

  • wow great month ps plus keeps giving dead space and musamoon for me!

  • Whoa, I own a ton of games across all 3 platforms but I actually have none of these!! :D Excited!!!

  • About someone’s post about a credit if you had the plus game. There’s now way for sony to even do that. You could have rented the game from red box of bought used from gamestop and returned it in 7 days. They would have now way of knowing.

  • PrimeroIncognito

    @ Bahumat

If you don’t care, why’d you reply? ;)

I’m not trying to fight with you. That’s pessimistic speculation on your part. Re-read my post to you. I never insulted you. I don’t know why you always take everything I say so personally. (Well, actually I do know why, but we can discuss that later. ;) )

Also, I did address the rest of the complainers when I posted @ Anyone who feels shafted.

Sony can’t support the Vita until the consumers do. Sony provided a strong start for the Vita, but the consumers let them down with their lack of support. They can’t keep funneling millions toward a staggering platform. Again, it’s a business. If Vita owners help boost sales by recommending a Vita to everyone they know, then maybe we’ll see the Vita climb out of it’s little trench and join the other thriving platforms. But, they can’t do it without YOU!

And, I don’t tow any company line, silly. I don’t represent Sony, I represent sanity.

  • Nice one! 3 PS4 games!

    Now all we need is

    1. a deal for Last of Us for people who already own the game on PS3
    2. a new update for the ps4, giving us the options to pause downloads and a bunch of stuff that kind of should have been in there since launch (mp3. dvd. blueray playback for example)
    3. announcement that AAA titles join the library in august

and it would be the best month everrrr!

    (A man can dream right?)

  • You say you’re not trying to fight with me but out of 3 pages of comments I’m the only one that you call out by name even though I’ve repeatedly asked you to stop wasting my time and to stop addressing me with your “explanations” and “corrections”. You’re just tiresome and obnoxious. You refuse to let anybody have an opinion and express it if it’s not in line with yours. You’ll spend all night on here trying to talk somebody down until they just get tired of it so you can say you “won”. Being the loudest and most annoying doesn’t make you “right”

Let me save you the trouble. I’m gonna go ahead and tell you that you “won”. Do you feel better? Can you sleep tonight? Good, now maybe you can find something else to do and let this public forum be used as a public forum where the public can actually express their opinions without you jumping to Sony’s defense every step of the way. We get it. You’re a fanboy. Congrats on that
