For the last twelve months, we’ve had our heads down working hard on Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture and it’s really exciting to be able to share some more information with you as well as a new trailer:
If you already know The Chinese Room, you’ll know that we make story-driven games. Creating a rich, deep world with strong drama and exceptional production values is key to what we’re all about. Rapture is set in a remote valley in June 1984 and is a story about people and how they live with each other. But it’s also about the end of the world.
Rapture is inspired by the fiction of John Wyndham, J. G. Ballard, John Christopher and other authors who deal with ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. There’s a very particular English feel that we wanted to capture in the game, a combination of the epic and the intimate. Rapture also came from our obsession with post-apocalyptic gaming, and the simple idea that whilst we normally play as the hero, in reality, most of us would be the piles of ash and bone littering the game world. That’s an interesting place to start telling a story.
Our approach is to create a game that you can utterly immerse yourself in. Yaughton Valley, where Rapture takes place, is a living, breathing world. The world of Rapture is not just a backdrop; it’s a character in its own right. It’s great working with PS4 as its processing power makes a game like this possible for a team our size.
The game is all about discovery. It’s open-world so you have the freedom to explore wherever you like, visiting areas in an order you define, and the story is written to allow this whilst making sure every player has a strong dramatic experience. It’s a type of storytelling that is completely unique to games. The choices you make as a player have a direct impact on how you understand the story – the more you explore and interact, the deeper you are drawn into Rapture’s world.
As ever in our games, music and audio play a fundamental role in achieving this. The soundtrack is already shaping up to be a unique and extraordinary part of our vision. Check out one of the tracks from Rapture below:
In the build up to E3, we’ve suddenly seen the game leap forwards – you spend a long time working on disparate elements in early production and it’s fantastic to now find ourselves in a world that springs to life week by week. We’re really excited, and hope the trailer, screenshots and an exclusive music track will make you excited too!
Wow! This sounds terrific, Jessica. Thanks for the share; I’ll definitely add EGttR to my radar. :)
DAY 1 BUY FOR ME :)
I don’t get it… are we a real live person? And what are we doing in this game? Or are we… as you say… a pile of bones and ash and our ghost is trying to earn his place literally in God’s Rapture? You didn’t really explain much….
This sounds incredible. Just up my alley, as we say. Did you say this is for PS4? I will keep an eye out for your game.
This was one game I was really disappointed not to hear about at E3, I appreciate the update. Can we expect it this year or is it looking like a 2015 game?
I like it. It just looks like a game that will be memorable to play.
Does this support morpheus?
Can’t wait for more info and to eventually play this. Day 1 purchase for sure!
Oh boy! Another piece of s*** walking simulator!
The PS vita TV would have saved the Vita Cards. Why on earth would you abandon it like that?
Ok my bad, it is coming with it after all. Ouff… It said “many” Vita games but not all of them, so you had me worried there for a second. The card slot is on the side and not on the front.
Is it true you canceled the PC version?
Tiger, do you even know what page you’re posting on?
And why does it seem like I’m the only one who doesnt’ know what this game is about?
Thank you for posting this Jessica Curry. My first time hearing about this game. I like what I see so far.
C’mon, what kinda trailer is that? Do you want me to be interested or not?
As far aa gameplay goes, i want a goal. Dont just build a world and tell me to make my own fun, youre the game designers, not me!
lol I kinda have to agree with #16
Physical release or no sale.
I want this game NOW.
Here is a sure fire recipe for disaster as a developer and disappointment for gamers…
1) Release a gorgeous trailer of a game that tells people nothing about it other than it’s beautiful and well scored.
2) Give a vague explanation of gameplay that tells us nothing other than it’s open world and “choices affect outcome” ( heard that one before).
3) Let everyone come to their own conclusions and raised expectations over the next 5 months.
4) Release your game… Or actual telling information on it, and have half the community decide they rather have the game they imagined.
5) Spend the rest of the quarter scrambling to garner interest again.
Details. Give more details. Unless there are none…in which case… Please don’t waste or time. Looks like an interesting that aside.
^ couldn’t have said it better…… and what’s with all these sheeple saying “I WANT NAO!!!!” You dont’ even know what it is……
mormonism…….:O
^ If you know the chinese room, you would know their previous game Dear Esther, which was released on the PC and got some pretty good reviews. Based on the developer pedigree alone, I am very excited for this game. Sony would not publish their game themselves, if they did not see the potential in it.
^ well I don’t know them, and neither do a lot of people….. and a post like this might as well have not been made in the first place. There’s no real info about the game at all. Oh it’s open world and you make your own story….. ok….. so what’s the game about???
^The games don’t have potential at all. The hipsters gamurs with awful taste are the potential buyers, that’s all.
This “game” doesn’t promise anything, just like Dear Esther. What you even do on that game besides walk and walk and walk?
Same goes for Gone Home, praised for who knows what reason, and you just walk and read and story about a lesbian. Wow, so effing DEEP.
And don’t tell me that the “stories” on those games are worth it, a game is meant to be PLAYED. If you want to read a deep meaningful story go read a book.
Or watch a movie.
I try not to judge a game before I play it myself. But as for Dear Esther, I feel that I get the same experience as ones who play the game just by watching. and I can say for sure Dear Esther is a pretentious crap.
Hopefully for this game’s sake, this game will ACTUALLY have substance
looks fantastic! will the audio be surround sound?
will there be 3DTV support? any use of the DUalShock 4’s speaker?
looking forward to your previous games coming to PS4 :)
Santa Monica is helping?…now we’re talking…so it means this game is exclusive to PS?…..eager to see more about it…especially gameplay.
I feel genuinely sorry for people who are so close minded that they can’t enjoy something a little different. The mystery surrounding these types of games is half the fun. If you want a mindless game to dull your senses with buy painkiller (awesome btw) and leave this for the rest of us who want to enjoy it. Just dance isn’t for me but I understand not every game is supposed to be for me. Ugh.
This could be a really cool game, and you kids who write off games like this because you aren’t shooting things or playing online multiplayer are why gamers get such a bad name. Grow up and expand your minds — shooters are fun, but there’s a lot more to gaming than Call of Duty and Battlefield.
Lovely track, beautiful visuals. I sure wish you could have given us a little bit more details for the story, but the aforementioned is more than enough to have a watchful eye on you guys. Hope you have a successful launch! Good luck TCR team!
Looks incredible.
with how much of a stubborn, backwards-thinking luddite Einhander138 has shown himself to be on [sigh] EVERY.SINGLE.THREAD on here, I think it would be fair to hypothesize that he’s also the exact type of stubborn, backwards-thinking luddite that games like this clearly aren’t designed for. ^_^
@30 wtf1984
“you kids who write off games like this because you aren’t shooting things or playing online multiplayer are why gamers get such a bad name”
Really?
Says the guy who is playing WATCH_DOGS and that bought/played Tomb Raider, Killzone Shadow Fall (but barely touched like almost any other game), GTA V, TLOU and stuff?
How cynical can someone be?
Anyway, I’m against generic casual shooters too, but I’m also against the current state of gaming, where a game that shouldn’t even be considered a game is titled as a “masterpiece” and stuff.
But wait, don’t tell you are trying to say that you are better just because you play DIFFERENT AND DEEP games and that you don’t play multiplayers? Or you just avoid them because you suck at them and then you go saying “multiplayers and having online is for kiddies waah waah” -well in CoD and BF cases you would be right though-
“there’s a lot more to gaming than Call of Duty and Battlefield.” my @$$, you barely touch any of your games. Oh, but you play lots of sports games! WOW, SO MATURE AND MIND-EXPANDING
hey 29 and 30…… learn to read. We’re not blowing the game off, we’re complaining about the lack of info. You know something we don’t? Cause all I saw was a ball of light go into a tree….. WE DON”T KNOW WHAT THE HELL THIS IS, they didn’t say ANYTHING except “it’s open world and you make your own story”…….. oh and it’s at the end of the world. Well what happened? Is it zombies, is it like fallout 3, did aliens kidnap most of the planet, are WE that ball of light and help people ascend to Heaven? LOL……
#20 put it perfectly….. ya the game looks gorgeous but so do many others…. I’ve already lost interest simply cause of the lack of information. Hell I would’ve forgotten the name of this already if I hadn’t put this page’s link on my Favorites bar just to see what others posted……
Hey 35! Learn what a story-driven game is.
The point of the game is to discover what caused the world to end, and to learn what happened to the characters in this world.
Or, if you’d prefer, give me your contact information and I’ll tell you the end of every movie before you see it & the end of every game before you play it.
YAY DETAILS!
@ 29 Oisterboy (and everyone else actually)
Why do you defend this game (or indies) so much? You try to look cool because of your “different” tastes? Because they’re awful.
Did you even “play” Dear Esther and Gone Home? You seriously want that to be the standar of games? Don’t get me wrong, I love DIFFERENT but also GOOD games, and those don’t classify on that category.
Try to be sure what you are talking about before spouting crap, did you even saw what games I have played? hm? No, of course not, because if you had, you wouldn’t have said we only play dull games.
I mean, you are the one that have played most dull games: Borderlands series, Bioshock series, GoW from CoO onwards, DUKE NUKEM FOREVER, Skyrim, ANGRY BIRDS, Brothers, PASBR etc etc etc.
(Cont’d)
(Cont.)
“-Look at me! I know that some games are not for me therefore you are just haters! I’m so mature and different!” That’s what I read on the last line. We all know that some games aren’t for us, but we also can know when a games is bad because we played a good game of that genre before, that’s why know that BF3/4 and MW3 are s***, that’s why DmC shoudn’t exist, Braid and Fez are pieces of **** with no difficulty and effort at all compared to lots of other plataformers, etc etc etc. GoW is a combination of Rygar and PoP and was excellent, but Beowulf and Dante’s Inferno are really bad games because we know that we could be playing something millions of years better.
Now, you say that mystery surrounding these types of games is half the fun… what mystery? Have you even played old adventure PC games? I bet you effing not. When you had played at least 2 good ones (if they aren’t too advanced for you) you will know what I mean when I say that Dear Esther, Gone Home and soon Everybody’s Gone (Home) (he) to the Rapture.
Oh, this goes for you too 36.
How lonely are you honestly?
@ Viewtiful Gene
Congratulations.
You have gone above & beyond (BEYOND!) to prove that you are not the audience for this game.
Thanks for stopping by, though.
@36… I know what a story driven game is dimwit…. in fact I have a few, including Teltale game’s The Walking Dead. My point is, even what YOU just said says NOTHING about what the FRACK this game is about. Ya it’s story driven, BUT WHAT”S THE DAMN STORY? What, are we going to go defend people from the Helghast? LOL Maybe you need to learn to read too, go read my post you responded to a few times. Except for “it’s an open world story driven game”…. and there’s some ball of light in a 10 second video…. we know NOTHING. Sorry but most people arent’ idiots go pay $60 for the unknown.
like…. what the hell was that ball of light…… and going off the game’s title…… Are we like the Ghost Whiperer, and going around helping the dead who havent’ moved on to ascend to Heaven? Or is it a nuclear apocalypse, or a zombie one? What the hell is it? Is it the Walking Dead without Zombies, and we just go around …….. doing … what? with the few people left alive? get it yet? good now stop being a dolt.
This literally tells me nothing about the game.
@Viewtiful_Gene You were doing great, man. Your 1st posts were spot on and I was 100% with you. But then you started doing all those game comparisons and…oh, dude…please…just STOP TALKING now. Now you’re just embarrassing yourself. =\
@DragonIrons I totally agree that this blog entry sux. It does NOTHING to explain the game and all that. But if you don’t know what The Rapture is…then I suggest you read the Bible…or use Google. It’s a “mystical” thing, dude…so enough with all that “nuclear and/or zombie apocalypse” stuff. xD
They did an awful job at explaining the game…but by saying “The Rapture” they are at least telling…something. =P
@44 Orpheus_Aeons
You don’t have to be so defensive about a game you LIKE, just because it’s effing popular doesn’t mean s***, you have to accept that every game has flaws and as I said there are far better games in each genre ESPECIALLY nowadays.
I understand that you could love BF3, but have you ever played anything else? have you played other shooters (FPS/TPS) or other multiplayer games? I don’t think so, and that’s what I mean, when you have played a lot of other really good games maybe you will understand. I’ve talked to lots of people and they say that BF is the best shooter ever but just because they haven’t played any other shooter, not even the previous CoD/MoH which is hilarious, and most of the time they don’t even know about arena shooters. And yes, I know that nobody will play those old multiplayers, but still there better multiplayers out there.
Let’s see… BF3 characteristics are: destructive environment and vehicles… do you know about Red Faction games? Do you know about Starhawk? Do you know about Battefront 1 and 2?

Seriously, sometimes it looks like people see their popular favorite videogames like a religion or part of their family and get extremely mad or offended when other people don’t like them. And somehow it only applies to popular videogames (and indies it seems, God knows why)
@40 Dionysus-Jones
As 41 said, learn to read.
@ Orpheus I know what the Rapture is….. You should read my first two lines in my last post again….. about helping lost souls move on to Heaven.
@ Viewtiful (what the heck kinda name is that) What in the hell are you babbling about? Orpheus only made ONE post, a short one, replying to me and you. He didn’t mention BF3 or anything….. and if you bothered reading what he said to me you’d know he wasnt’ even defending this blog post or anything genius….
maybe you should take your own advice to # 40
Oh boy another troll in the Blog, that was just what we didn’t needed…Viewtiful_Gene saw you trolling in a lot of E3 blog posts.Just stop…your ignorance is getting beyond the limit.
@47 DragonIrons
Reading comprehension. Please use it. He talked about my game comparisons, popular games that most people will defend, so I clarified that point to him using BF3 as an example because he was playing that game at some point, and if he didn’t, it’s still a good example. After all, he said he read my posts, didn’t he?
@48 Welmosca
Having different opinions is trolling and ignorance nowadays? Where’s my ignorance? Point it out, tell me. When I said that almost no gameplay was shown at E3, was I wrong? When I said that Nin***do was better because they shown gameplay and different and colorful games, was I wrong? Here in this page have you argumented why I’m wrong? Tell me why I’m the ignorant and you the bright one. Please.
The Comcept is promising, but I hope its a lot longer than Dear Esther. Thx.
