Roundup: 12 New Indies Coming to PlayStation

Hello PlayStation fans! We held an awesome event at our offices yesterday, and in case you missed some of our new game announcements I wanted to round them up for you below. Also note that all of these titles will be making their console debut on PlayStation platforms.

Independent developers are continuing to create incredible games for PS4, PS3, and PS Vita, and we can’t wait to bring them to you throughout this year and beyond.

Apotheon (PS4)

“Looking back, making our upcoming action sidescroller Apotheon in the visage of ancient Greek pottery seemed like an obvious choice. Everything is already there. The 2D perspective, the awesome narrative and setting possibilities, heroes fighting monsters and magical goat-men with no pants… All we really had to do was figure out how to make the art on those pots move around and make it into an interesting game.”

Axiom Verge (PS4/PS Vita)

“Axiom Verge is a retro-styled 2D “metroidvania” action-adventure, inspired by such classics as Rygar, Contra, Bionic Commando, Blaster Master, and, of course, Metroid. But it also gives you power over glitches like those found in classic games, allowing you to scramble enemies, corrupt environments, and enter hidden areas.”

Chasm (PS4)

“In Chasm, players take up the role of Daltyn, a young soldier sent to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a mining crew in the remote mountain town of Karthas. Upon arrival you learn the town has been cut off from the outside world by supernatural forces. Now trapped, you are left with no option but to explore the mines below the town and uncover the source of the disturbances. Only by gaining new special abilities, evading dangerous traps, and defeating hordes of deadly enemies can you hope to save Karthas — and possibly the world!”

Don’t Starve: Reign of Giants (PS4)

“New dangers threaten our intrepid hero. And they happen to come in a variety of ghastly shapes and sizes.”

Drifter (PS4/PS Vita)

“Drifter is an open-world, sandbox, space trading game with a procedurally-generated galaxy 100,000 light years across, made up of tens of thousands of star systems to explore and features an original soundtrack by composer Danny Baranowsky.”

Escape Goat 2 (PS4)

“The theme of Escape Goat 2 is transformation. As you manipulate hidden machinery, walls move around and blocks settle into new places. Things look different when you’re done with the room (especially if you employ your mighty horns to their best use). And you have a remarkable companion to help you on your journey…”

Ironclad Tactics (PS4)

“Ironclad Tactics is a fast-paced, card-based tactics game set in the American Civil War… with robots! Although it’s reminiscent of the tactics games and collectible card games that we’re all familiar with, we’ve done a few things that make the game stand out.”

Jamestown+ (PS4)

“Simultaneous play is not necessarily cooperative, and co-op has come a long way since arcade ruled the Earth. We’re living in a post-Left 4 Dead, post-Rock Band world, and sometime in 2009, we decided to stop waiting for someone else to apply a few of the many design innovations of the past twenty years to the humble shoot-em-up genre.”

Nidhogg (PS4)

“We have the most fun playing Nidhogg in front of our TV with friends. Sharing a TV and controllers is way more comfortable than crowding around someone’s desk and sharing a keyboard. Exclusive to the PS4 version, the built-in tournament mode now indicates your fencer’s color on DualShock 4′s light bar… how cool is that?!”

Skulls of the Shogun: Bone-A-Fide Edition (PS4)

“Skulls of the Shogun is a mash-up of turn-based strategy and fighting-game flare, scientifically engineered for lightning-quick rounds, thoughtful strategic play, and a frequently inappropriate sense of humor with its tongue planted firmly in cheek. And whether you’re into single or multiplayer, Skulls has you covered.”

Spelunky (PS4)

Spelunky on PS4

“We’re once again teaming up with BlitWorks, who did a great job on bringing the game to PS3 and PS Vita. For PS4, we want to do even more — like bump up the graphics to 1080p, let players upload replays to the leaderboards, add more social features to the Daily Challenge, and otherwise take advantage of the PS4′s unique hardware.”

Starwhal: Just the Tip (PS4/PS3)

“The game mechanics and controls in Starwhal are not complex — navigate your narwhal to tag your opponent’s heart and protect your own. Of course, the narwhals themselves wiggle all over the place in spastic fits of salty marine protest, but therein lies at least half the fun.”

Apotheon is the one that interest me the most.

  • I hope more of these indies come to the PS Vita as well. A lot of them look really fun.

  • What game does the main splash image represent? CHASM or Axiom Verge?

I can’t believe all the cry babies on here though complaining about 8-bit graphics and non AAA titles. I for one am pumped that so many games are coming to the PS4. I haven’t played anyone of the previously released STEAM ones and i’m looking forward to giving them a try. I’ve heard really good things about Splunkey so I’m looking forward to playing that!

And anyone saying Don’t Starve is unplayable *cough* ElektroDragon *cough* just doesn’t know how to play it.

  • I buy indie games on Steam where they are a fraction of the cost. I buy my consoles for AAA content and hope Sony will do a better job filling the pipeline with console exclusive games. It doesn’t make sense that Sony is having such a hard time releasing first party games given the number of studios they still own.

  • Wow, what a world we live in where people complain that a console is getting more games. Like many others have already said, if these aren’t your type of games, then ok, move on. Better yet why even click on a post clearly titled “Roundup: 12 New Indies Coming to PlayStation”? And yes, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but what’s the point in spouting off a bunch of noise knowing it’s not going to affect anything? Indie games will come regardless of if you like them or not. Finally, (regardless of whether you like the game or not) how rude can you be to insult the people who are making these games (even though you haven’t played them).

    Like I said before, what a world…..

  • And the people who are asking about the picture on the front page, it’s Chasm. They have the same picture in the post for the game itself.

  • I used to like indie games, but this is just too much… if developers from time to time launched a long game with great gameplay and decent graphics, I would be on favor on financing their projects with indie games. But that’s not happening. So it looks like is all about the profit, and I deny to invest almost 50 dollars for 3 short indie game, specially old ports…

Also, what’s with the retro looking games? It was okay when it was something casual and different, not a daily thing. That concept it’s too exploited, and getting old… AGAIN.

  • These look GREAT! I will be buying at least 2 or 3 of these as soon as they launch. I am also anxiously awaiting N++! Yes, I am also looking forward to new “AAA” titles, but I bought a PS4 not only for the superior hardware, but specifically because Sony and the new PS4 are more “indie friendly”. I get FAR more enjoyment playing a game like “Spelunky” than I do playing “Tired FPS franchise 4″…and I enjoy the quirky, fresh ideas that are far more likely to come from an independent developer than the typically risk averse big publishers. I do buy “AAA” titles as well, but I really enjoy the diversity that the smaller games bring to the table as well. THANK YOU, Sony, for supporting these developers, and bringing us, the players, new and interesting titles to play! Keep ’em coming…I will be buying them!

  • Thanks Tom and BlueBl1zzard. I didn’t read the individual post for the game just watched the embedded trailer on the 12 game round up. I was definitely interested in CHASM and it’s good to know that bad ass art goes with that game!

  • And if anyone hasn’t watched the Skulls of the Shogun: Bone-A-Fide Edition trailer they should! It is hilarious!

  • Just know that for every whiny complainer about indie-games, there is an equal counterpart excited and rejoicing. I am one of those happy for indie games and speaking up, just as loudly as those who complain about “too many indie games.” Not enough indie games if you ask me! I will keep buying and enjoying them as long as they are offered, and please don’t stop offering them. Guess what? I actually prefer a lot of indie games to AAA titles.

  • Oh, and Axiom Verge and Chasm are my top two and must buys, but they all look appealing to me. Especially Axiom Verge. If you can’t see the awesomeness of the environment and bosses and the FEEL the sinking, uneasy feeling of the music then…I guess we have different tastes in games.

  • I’d feel ashamed for buying a 400 dollar console just to play a bunch of cheap PC games. Anyone who sold their PS3 or 360 and are content enough with these hand-me-downs from the PC are in denial of the terrible mistake they made. Anyone who thinks these “games” are pushing the industry unlike AAA games (I detest that term by the way) are crazy beyond words. I’m sorry, in the case for a number of these “games” ripping off games that they played decades ago is not clever. You’re just a hipster.

  • Where is…Gone home? Papers please? DayZ? Rust? no man’s sky?

  • Did you guys give up on trying to get anything next gen? There are plenty of smaller games that could use the tech better, most of these look like dollar Android games.

  • Also, what is with people whining about whiners on the blog? It is feedback from customers.

  • Buying all of these… especially excieted for axiom verge and drifter…. love space sims, but we need more (bring back colony wars!)

As to the complainers…. get the hell out of here…You do realize these games don’t prohibit larger games to be made. Some of us love this stuff.. You idiots sound like a bunch of spoiled rotten children. Is this your first game system. My god!

  • @honkayjeezus

Saying “Indies games suck” or something similar is not providing feedback. The people who are saying comments like this are not offering any sort of solution on how to fix the “problem” that they’re talking about. Unless you wanna call “Don’t realease any more indie games on the PS4.” a solution. But like many others have said, if Sony were to suddenly stop releasing indie games on PS4 tomorrow, the universe would more than likely not all of a sudden spit out new AAA games, and it would not make the ones already announced release any sooner.

  • @LucifersGleam Who said Indie games had to be innovative and push the boundaries? Is this some unwritten rule? Have you ever considered the many factors that go into making an indie game? It could be possible MANY people enjoy games of all types. The ones that push the boundaries as you say, as well as ones that are just plain fun. I think you are only holding yourself back by limiting yourself to only things that innovate. Personally I enjoy both and have so much fun with my indies. Sorry you can’t handle I’m enjoying something you view as not innovative.

  • It’s funny I’m seeing a lot of comments from indie supporters telling AAA supporters not to criticize Indies. However the critics of free expression are themselves, telling, not asking, but telling those with a differing viewpoint to discard that viewpoint, because it
    is different to theirs.

We as gamer’s are the financial life blood of this industry. they get revenue from our custom, their product is play tested continuously by being actively played. The direction of where games are going and what is acceptable to the majority is what
feedback is for, so let the comments be for or against, it doesn’t really matter. At the end of the day the feedback will be tallied
by this site and others like it, and the results will speak for themselves.

  • Happy to see some Vita games. Just recently bought one and cannot put it down. Better then 3DS.
Also thank you so much Sony for the golden week sale. Ys is SUPER fun and probably wouldnt have bought it
if it wasnt on sale. Still thinking of getting a couple more games before the sale ends. What I’m REALLY
wanting though at the moment is a Walking Dead Season 2 pass on sale again. Missed it the first time
    and was really bummed.

@GeeEfKay: Okay, but saying “indies suck” on a post about indies isn’t much different from saying “Sony sucks” anywhere on this blog: It’s just trolling and you know it. There are plenty of ways to be negative without being nasty; the same goes for the supposed “other side” of this argument: There’s no need to act that way. Plenty of people have made good points on both sides, including you.

Personally, I enjoy lots of indies. Not all of them interest me, of course, but I say the more the merrier. The real “shovelware” includes AAA titles *and* indies that are released in an unfinished or broken state.

LUCIFERSGLEAM said: “I’d feel ashamed for buying a 400 dollar console just to play a bunch of cheap PC games.”

Do you really believe that this is all the PS4 will ever get? What a silly argument. By the way, how much did your PC cost?

LUCIFERSGLEAM: “Anyone who sold their PS3 or 360 and are content enough with these hand-me-downs from the PC are in denial of the terrible mistake they made.”

I don’t know how many people fit this description, but even if there are many people content with the current offerings on PS4, how could it be a mistake? People have different tastes. How do you not know that?

LUCIFERSGLEAM: “Anyone who thinks these “games” are pushing the industry … are crazy beyond words.”

Pushing, as in, exploring ideas that would be considered too fringe, niche, controversial, and/or risky for mainstream publishers who aim instead for the safe bet.

These are all basic concepts that you’re failing to comprehend. Looks like Lucifer isn’t the light-bearer after all… oh well.

  • Narrator: From days of long ago, from uncharted regions of the universe, comes a legend; the legend of Blogtron, Defender of the Playstation Blog, a mighty robot, loved by the corporate machine, nuisance to the community. As Blogtron’s legend grew, peace settled across the galaxy. On Planet Earth, a Sony Alliance was formed. Together with the good planets of the solar system, they maintained peace throughout the universe, until a new horrible menace threatened the galaxy. Blogtron was needed once more. This is the story of the super force of blog explorers, specially trained and sent by the Sony Alliance to bring back Blogtron, Defender of the Playstation Blog!

  • Can you hear the theme song in your head? Do you feel just a little silly? Maybe just a little? I heard somebody comment about some of the posters on here are actually undercover paid posters who come on to fight or talk down anybody that has anything negative to say. It happens all the time on various sites and to be perfectly honest I think there might be a little truth in that here. I just can’t picture some people spending as much time as they do on here defending the Sony experience tooth and nail at every turn and not getting paid to do it

  • @ThumbsofSteel74..Firstly let me say great name :) Secondly I agree. I like that Indie developers get a platform. I like AAA game designers to put effort into their projects too. “Saying Sony Sucks or Microsoft blows is putting too much personal investment in any of these corporations. We buy and use or play their product, we have a right to a certain expectation. In Sony’s case I do feel they want to satisfy their customer base. Despite the PS4 being awesome at launch they are constantly working away behind the scenes constantly improving the software.

I do wish they would put some better stuff on PS+ for PS4, but I’m not going to change platforms over it, Bound by Flame and Watchdogs are just round the corner and Infamous Second Son gave me a good insight into the power of the PS4. Maybe Greatness isn’t awaiting much longer :)

  • My 2 cents. It’s fine that Sony’s supporting indies. Most of them suck, but there were/are some that were a great deal of fun to play, but there needs to be more focus on quality control instead of (at least seeming to) letting anybody that wants to publish a game publish it without any kind of testing to make sure it meets the standards the community expects.

  • @+ BahumatIsBack Very good point. More is not necessarily better, and you hit it on the head with QC just because you can make a game doesn’t mean you should make a game LoL.

  • PrimeroIncognito

    @ BahumatIsBack

The problem with your goofy theory is that, well, REALITY paints a different picture. That pesky reality, always showing up to ruin every conspiracy theorist’s multitude of disturbing fantasies. I know, it sucks, don’t it? :/

Truth is, there isn’t a single corporation in the world that fears what a few whiny kids on a blog are saying. There’s no need for them to pay anyone to shut you down. You’re not a threat to their bottom line. This blog is small time. It’s mostly an advertising outlet, with some public relations interaction mixed in to maintain consumer interest. “Shadow” employees only monitor the conversations within to make sure no one is attracting undesirable attention or divulging proprietary information. Less than 1% of all PSN customers post comments here. It would be incredibly short-sighted for any business to measure what the majority of their customers want by magnifying a microscopic segment of (mostly petty) requests and treating it as widespread interest. You still haven’t gotten it through your head that your petty cries have not the weight that you curiously assume they do.

  • PrimeroIncognito

EVERY business monitors consumer trends through statistics. All kinds of statistics.

In the retail ecosystem, it’s mostly distribution/sales numbers… after all, it is a business, thus, profit is a key aspect of survival, and long-term influence is the ever-elusive ultimate goal. Consumer desires are revealed by comparing various statistics gathered from across the entire spectrum. Blog comments are only a tiny slice of the pie, and therefore, not very influential.

The whiners/detractors here are not a threat to anyone. The main reason I post here (aside from my genuine interest in the PlayStation brand) is because I can’t stand to see ignorance displayed so proudly by my fellow humans. I’m not kidding you when I say it makes me feel ill, to see people under complete control of their egos, completely oblivious to the incredible wisdom that awaits right under their noses, if they could just get past their selfish preoccupations. I assure you that Sony is not paying me to post here. I don’t represent any corporate ideals. I wouldn’t do that. If you only knew me… I speak from my heart every time I say, or type, anything.

  • AMAZING!!!!….still gotta find time to see all the videos…but damn this is some great news….good job Sony.

And for all the complainers…please try to use your brains…no point in being so narrow-minded….ignorance ain’t a good thing to carry in your life.Trust me.

Y’all getting games and still complaining?….WTF?

  • @BahumatIsBack: Do you ever stop complaining about Indies. I swear all you go in every Indie post is slander an Indie game. Saying some Indie Games “suck” is not a nice thing to say. Just because you didn’t like it, doesn’t mean it sucks. The people who develop these games to try and bring fun to people and have them enjoy their experience.

I would like to see you try and make a game, go ahead. And the moment someone says it sucks, I bet you won’t be happy with it. Don’t be bagging on Indie developers when you know damn well you can’t even think about putting a game together as good as they make it. Don’t play your PS4 then until AAA games come out. That’s cool with me. I just wish people like you would quit talking **** about Indie developers when they are doing their best to make great games and/or experiences.

  • ThumbsOfSteel74

At least people here are watching the videos and further researching these titles (as they should) to see if they warrant a purchase. Some of the “quality” comments seem based on the notion that Sony should do all of that for you, and give you nothing but the highest quality indies for your hard-earned dollar. Of course, that’s completely retarded. No such system exists that disallows completely broken and terrible full retail games from being released. Besides, “quality” is in the eye of the beholder once a game (any game) actually functions.

Love your AAAs, and hate indies if you will. But at least finally admit to yourself that it’s not about Driveclub and Watch_Dogs any more. Had those games been released at launch, you’d have finished them months ago and still be complaining now. All the more with 2 fewer titles to look forward to.

  • Glad the Vita is getting some indie games.

Since you know, you locked most of our PSP/PSOne game purchases from us.

  • Ready to form Blogtron! Activate interlocks! Dyna-therms connected. Infra-cells up; mega-thrusters are go!

    Let’s go, Blogtron Force!

  • @ThumbsofSteel74 Very well said.

  • @BahumatIsBack
When people can’t come up with a good argument to something they don’t like, they sometimes resort to shouting, in this case typing, hackneyed accusations with no grounds to back them up. I will propose a few questions and I’m hopeful the people who don’t like indies can answer them.

1.) What exactly is it about indies you don’t like?
2.) How do indies in any way affect the release of the games you actually want?
3.) You state indie titles are “shovelware.” While I agree they sometimes can be, a lot of them are full of content and created with passion and a love for gaming. So, does it simply boil down to the fact that most indie games are not at the top in graphical performance and you don’t like how they look (Hand drawn, 2-D, 8-bit, 16-bit)?
4.) Have you ever played an indie you liked?

  • I want Apotheon and Chams on my Vita. Now.

  • FalseCracMedEvac

this was the most hyped a video game article has gotten me in a long time LOL! win for us

  • @BlueGnosis – where did I say I don’t like indies? If you actually look instead of jumping to conclusions I said some of them were actually quite good, but those are very few and very far in between. Shovelware doesn’t apply to all indie games, but it does apply to more of them then it doesn’t. There seems to be this mentality that “indie” means “holy grail” for some people and for others it means “pure garbage”. It’s just not the case and is short sighted in both camps of the argument. Each game should be taken on a case by case basis. There are AAA games that fall into the “pure garbage” category too because of poor execution, bugs, the feeling of them being incomplete, etc

  • My Blogtron comments were really just directed at about 3 or 4 people on here that consistently and blindly tow the company line whenever somebody says anything negative about what Sony’s doing. Even if the people complaining have and make valid points, they completely ignore that and have a rabid dog mentality that they just can’t be wrong and their way is the only way. You can talk to these people til you’re blue in the face but it doesn’t do any good since they refuse to accept that the world is a much bigger place than what they themselves see

These people know who they are and sorry if they can’t take a joke which was made clear a couple posts back, but if this small handful of people want to come on here and just try to talk everyone down who doesn’t agree with them day after day after day, then the only option is to poke a little fun at them in the hopes that they take a step back and realize how silly all of this is

  • Form feet and legs; form arms and body; and I’ll form the head!

    :)

  • PrimeroIncognito

    @ BahumatIsBack

Go ahead and keep telling yourself that there’s paid agents lurking around every corner. Lying to yourself that you’ve “got it all figured out” is a slippery slope. Paranoia’s gonna eat you up eventually.

As BlueGnosis just alluded to, you realized you’ve lost the argument but can’t handle or admit it, so you resort to making things up instead. I wish people like you would realize that you only make yourself look WORSE when you do that. It’s the internet equivalent of wringing your body around like a pouting child saying, “no! no! no!” Stop kicking and screaming. Just accept the loss, and bow out gracefully.

If you still don’t believe me, I don’t know what else to tell you, other than, it sucks to be you.

You’re starting to remind me of another delusional crybaby who posts here sometimes… you know, the guy with the dirty underwear.

  • ^^ Still didn’t get the joke but still trying to talk everyone down at every turn

  • PrimeroIncognito

^^ A joke at another’s expense is equivalent to talking them down, hypocrite.

  • PrimeroIncognito

You weren’t joking anyway. Saying you were joking is just your new tactic for escaping blame. Here are your EXACT WORDS. There is no joke apparent in this sentiment:

BahumatIsBack on May 2nd, 2014 at 11:04 pm said: “I heard somebody comment about some of the posters on here are actually undercover paid posters who come on to fight or talk down anybody that has anything negative to say. ^^^ I don’t see a joke in there. I only see a baseless assertion of clandestine corporate manipulation.

  • No, sadly you’re just seeing what you want to see. Here’s the whole quote from that post. It starts as a joke so why should it change? Read this again and the post before it, then get off your high horse and get your panties out of a bunch

“Can you hear the theme song in your head? Do you feel just a little silly? Maybe just a little? • I’ve said it before that the reading comprehension from some of the people on here is abhorrent. And now that I’ve used my 3 dollar word of the day I’m taking off while you come to terms with your shortcomings and maybe the next time you try to talk somebody down on here instead of having a conversation you’ll take a minute and realize how silly you really are

I wasn’t joking there in case you didn’t realize. I guess I gotta spell it out every time for the reading impaired
