Hello everyone! First of all, we want to thank you all for the warm welcome we received last time when we announced our game for PlayStation! You’re a great community and we’re happy to join it.

For those who have missed our last announcement, we are Grimm Bros, a small indie team of five developers working on Dragon Fin Soup, a classic RPG with Roguelike elements.

We’re back, all amped up, motivated, and eager to share our latest news with you. Right now we’re crazy busy getting ready for PAX East, where we’ll have a booth, cosplayers, and a playable demo for people to try out.

Today we’d like to share with you a longer gameplay video with commentary by Randis to talk about more of the details and nuances of the gameplay and world of Dragon Fin Soup. As we point out in the video, the footage is from an Alpha build and some of the gameplay elements and UI may be subject to change.

As we are nearing the end of our Kickstarter campaign, we hope to be able to hit some more of the stretch goals so we can add our second playable character, Morgiana, who would come with her own storyline, featuring new abilities, magic, and additional dungeons and monsters.

We are also giving out some free signed prints, LE plushies, and games on our Facebook page.

Last but not least, we’d like to give a big shout-out to the super nice guys from BlitWorks who have already started working on moving Dragon Fin Soup to PS3, PS4, and PS Vita!

  • This looks super fun. Reminds me a lot of zelda and Lufia, both for Snes. Cant wait for it. Is gonna be Legendary!!!

  • Nice! Looks great. Got a price? Or if it will be cross-buy/cross-save? :) (I could care less about cross-buy, but people would like to know I’m sure)

  • So happy I backed this project on Kickstarter. This game keeps getting better with every update they show.

  • Looks great! I am definitely interested in Kickstarting it but I have a couple questions first.

    1. Is it cross buy? (Specifically between Vita & PS4)

    2. When is the release date? It says 2014 on your Kickstarter page but then it says it will be delivered in April 2015 on the different backer options.

      Yes it is cross buy, it will come out in 2014 but the release date is TBA, it will depend how long it will take us to add the new features too

  • Also, how many hours will this bring for story and extras? I heard maps are random in the video so that will add a lot of hours I’m sure.

    • At this point of development we still don’t exactly know how long the play time will be, we have not measured it yet but this type of game you can play for a long time :) there also will be some additional game play modes such as the survival mode and endless labyrinth.

  • What a pretty game. Reminds me of Don’t Starve, at least from a visual standpoint. I’m sure it will be great.

    • Thank you very much! It will be more similar to Chocoo Dungeon or Shiren but with a bit more focus on story, world and characters

  • Looks like some awfully fine detail for the small Vita screen . . . are there plans to address this?

    • The game looks very nice on Vita but for vita we will apply some changed to the UI to make everything work well for the smaller screen! The base zoom for Vita will be adjusted as well

  • Looks like an interesting game but I see some flaws:

    – Leveling up seemed pretty trivial there. Give it a little bit more importance.
    – I like the strategic element given that you need to perform moves through turns even outside of battle but, the dynamic seems kind of too quick. The faster you make it, the less people will be able to admire your work on scenarios, details, and the less they will feel your game.
    – There is little work done on the atmosphere. These indie games sometimes look like a bunch of cliques of different things we have seen in past games that have been already proven but there is no unique identity. As I say, just a bunch of stuff thrown together without much pondering and pause in between (like farms being too close to the bar there in your video).

      This is a turnbased game but it does not play like FF tactics, x-com or tactics ogre (different genre)
      The DFS gameplay is similar to Chocobo Dungeo, Shiren and other Roguelike or mystery dungeon titles so the pace of the gameplay is entirely up to the player.
      A lot of the layouts is procedurally generated, the village layout is different every time you start a new game.

  • Yeah well, I’m pointing stuff out in hopes they will change it a bit, so the product ends up being more enjoyable when I buy it.

    Because I will buy it. I love RPGs and besides… we gotta pay to support non FPS games, right? :p

      We will do out best to polish the game for the release! There is still much of work ahead :)

  • Had to get the Artisan Edition, will we be able to choose later which platform our kickstarter game bundle is for?

    • Yes of course, after the campaign there will be a survey where you can select your platform of choice!
      We support cross buy so you can have it for PS3, PS4 and Vita

  • I see, thanks for the heads up. I guess it’ll suffer from that “farm next to the inn” flaw, guess it is more or less justified.

    All I ask is you guys keep the difficulty balanced (not too grindy)

      We will be doing more gameplay video later, we still did not cover lots of features and aspects.
      Balancing will be important of course, we will do our best :)

    The video deFINately has me interested though, and Cross Play is a Huge Plus.

    Not sure if it will be a day one purchase, with other Indie titles eventually going to IGC.
    ( Bought A Clone in the Dark )

    But wil surely think of buyng it when there may be a discount.

  • Does anybody know if the God of War Collection which includes all 5 games two of them a redeemable codes on PSN, does it included those two games that are redeemable? or did that already expired? I’m thinking of getting the God of War Collection, Let me know, anybody? it would be a bummer if it does not included the origins collection which will not make it a COMPLETE collection if you know what I mean>>> thanks

  • Considering this is an RPG and will most likely be a long game…

    Please tell me there will be a platinum trophy!!

    Love the art style btw and can’t wait to support u guys with my money when it comes out.

    Will this game have voice overs? If so to what extent?

    • That will depend on our budget, we would love to have voice overs for sure but its not yet decided.
      If we add voice overs then it would be for all story related Dialogs and some story telling voice between the chapters.

      That feature is already on our to do list, in the final game you will be able to rotate the character on the spot without using a turn!

  • This game definitely looks like it’s being crafted with love and with passion. What I’ve seen so far looks like you have a game you can be proud of. I’ve been following DFS for a while now, and can’t wait to get my hands on it. Congrats to you and your team, keep up the great work. Also, where are you and your team based out of?

      We are a remote developer, working from our homes or wherever we happen to be. We are based in the US, IK, Thailand and germany.

  • Looks like a fun game. I really like Rougelikes so I’ll most likely pick this up. Is there going to be any pre-order bonuses? It looks like it’ll be really fun to play on my Vita.

      We have not planned a pre-order campaign yet but the Kick starter is in fact something like that as we offer many additional goodies there that will not come with the normal version on release

    Great! You do have a very good taste on cosplayers and they are awesome too. My purchase will be made on Vita, I want to have this on the go. I’ve always liked femme fatale characters and you did an awesome job to reflect that with Robin!


  • Looks like terraria, gemeplay wise.

    • It compares better with Chocobo Dungeon, Shiren, ZHP and other roguelikes and mystery dungeon titles

  • You mentioned the game supports keyboard and mouse, but is that on PC and Mac only or does that include PS3 and PS4? Because it does look like DFS is better suited for keyboard and mouse, and PS consoles do support those peripherals it’s just most developers fail to support the proper control scheme in their games.

    I’d really appreciate it if you could provide built-in keyboard/mouse support, thanks.

    • The game is very fun with pad (i prefer pad) when playing with pad or just keyboard you walk around with the d-pad same as in a game like zelda or most other RPG games, the pad controls are easy and there is the command menu instead of drag and drop.
      For PS4 we will probably also add an additional onscreen cursor for the touch pad and vita will support touch controls as well.
      We will explore the controls for the Keyboard input on consoles as well

  • For now, I don’t think this game is for me, but I’d like to say congratulations on your success and I wish you continued success.

    Question: Will the UI be different for PS4/console players? If so, is there a chance that we may see some PS4 gameplay at some point down the road? As someone stated earlier, the footage we’ve seen shows the game being optimal for a mouse or mouse and keyboard, which is one of the reasons I am finding it less appealing, since I prefer controllers.

      On a side note, our game plays similar like Chocobo dungeon, shiren and other mystery dungeon games, such titles are very fun with pad and ours will be too :)

  • Thanks! The PS4 ui will be exactly the same, it is designed for all control input and works great with pad.
    In fact the pad controls are in some regards easier.
    When you play with mouse you have to click around to make your character walk while with pad you walk directly by using the D-Pad just like in most other console games, there is also the command menu, i had demonstrated it in the video multiple times, that menu is used when you play it with pad or keyboard, you press a single button and then additional buttons open up around the selected item and you can simply choose the action you wish to perform. This game was designed with pad controls in mind.
    Vita will also support the touch controls.

    • We have not yet decided but we will try! a demo would be cool for sure

  • Awe yes the rpg genre is really taking off on the PS Vita glad I own one. I will look into this a little more further.

  • Man this looks incredible, can’t wait to tell customers about it. Love the gameplay style, a sweet cross between strategy RPGs and action adventure hackn’slash. Hope too see it soon!!!!!

  • I hope this game is great, I love the crafting system, it looks like it could be really addictive. Can you make armor and weapons and/or damage dealing potions? I also love the art style, the hud, the minimap and even the cool green font when you level up. They all feel really polished, but I am not too sure on the combat. I would prefer Disgaea type combat but I know that is pretty niche.

      Yes you will be able to craft lots of armor and weapons as well as all sorts of food and other items

  • I rewatched the video and I’m really looking forward to playing this on vita. Last two questions, I promise! Can you keep your companions and level them up, or are they just for those specific missions? Also, I heard you say fishing missions in the video! For some reason I love fishing minigames in games(especially Dark Cloud and Breath of Fire), it’s a strange addiction. How in depth is the fishing in this game? Just give me 40-50 fish that you can use to craft rare items please? It will be a guaranteed 15-20 from me lol I need this!

  • We will gladly answer as many question as you guys ask us :)

    The NPC companions are not a permanent part of your party, but you will be able to hire them during the cause of the game almost anytime you like, they do have their own levels, stats and equipment but player can not change or influence it.
    Your own Pets and familiars are a different story, you can have up to 2 active pats at the same time and you can level them up as they gain some % of the Exp you make while they are active.

    There is a whole bunch of different fish in the game, also different lure types for specific fish and some fish can only be caught at a certain depth and only in certain dungeon types. Each fish has a random Grade and weight too.
    Fish can be consumed raw or cooked into various dishes

  • I love the look of this, and the gameplay will surely suck hundreds of hours out of my Vita! But my question is, do you plan on continuing with the items that don’t get funded in the Kickstarter, such as housing and ghosting, after the game goes live? I’d be willing to support a game like this through DLC!

      We will consider it, maybe as an expansion but it’s still too early to tell at this point.
