PlayStation Now Streaming Game Service Coming this Summer

PS Now

Today, at CES 2014 in Las Vegas, we announced that PlayStation Now (PS Now), our new streaming game service, will be available in the US this summer. With PlayStation Now, you will be able to stream popular hits and classic games from the PS3 library, first on PS4 and PS3 systems, followed by PS Vita.

In addition to PlayStation platforms, most 2014 US models of Sony’s BRAVIA TV lineup will support PS Now. Eventually the service will expand beyond PlayStation platforms and Sony devices, allowing you to stream PlayStation games across a broad range of Internet-connected devices.

Leveraging Gaikai’s advanced cloud-based technology, PlayStation Now will allow you to:

  • Play video games instantly across multiple devices, similar to the way you might stream TV, movies, and music.
  • Stream full games to all of your compatible PlayStation devices including PS4, PS3, and PlayStation Vita as well as non-PlayStation devices, beginning with 2014 BRAVIA TV models and expanding to numerous other Internet-connected devices.
  • Always play the most updated version of your game. With games hosted in the cloud, you can take your game with you – just log in with your Sony Entertainment Network account on a compatible device and your games and saved progress will be easily available.

We want to offer you choice when it comes to how you want to access content on PS Now, so you will be able to rent by title for specific games you are interested in. We’ll also offer a subscription that will enable you to explore a range of titles.

PS Now will begin a Beta program in the US at the end of January with an expected full roll-out in the US this summer. Be sure to check the PlayStation.Blog regularly for more updates on the PS Now service.

  • I’ll take emulation of my PS1 and PS2 titles over this. Onlive and Gaikai do not work so hot in my home and the only way to fix this issue is for me to move. Not worth the headache or the latency among other issues.

  • Sign me up too.

  • QUESTION

Will l be able to play the MP of TLoU on PS4?

  • Not to mention that no amount of renting or subscribing will remove the sting of having to do either for titles I already paid for on my PS1-3. I want ownership.

  • This is awesome i can’t wait to see it in action

  • Wow, really interested in this program; if done correctly it may even topple gamefly….Can’t wait for the closed beta (wish it will be easy to get in it >_<). I am wondering tho, how will it work on a Bravia TV only? I am assuming you have to own a dualshock 3/4 or using the remote? lol

    • Great question. Yes, you will need a DualShock 3 and, of course, high-speed internet to play from the BRAVIA TV.

  • Great. One question:

Is this going to be suscription based services, or would I be able to actually buy the games and link/store them to an existing accound?

I mean, let’s say there is Metal Gear Solid for PSX. I’ll be able to play it in the future on other non-sony devices as this PS NOW suggets. But let’s say I don’t want to pay the suscription anymore. Would I be able to play the game anyway if there’s the option to buy it?

  • Sounds like an awesome new program with serious potential. However I already paid for a PS Vita,PS3 & PS4 totaling around $1k. Not to mention the $50 a year for PS+ every year. My guess would be this service will charge another $50-100 a year on top of the PS+ so I probably won’t be subscribing to this service unfortunately. We’ll see how it goes in the future. However if Sony was to make a bundled service for PS+, Now & Music Unlimited for $100 a year you might grab my attention.

  • so you’re telling me I can play PS3 games on a PS4? well there goes the plan of getting the Azure PS3 model, I might still get later down the road, and really can’t wait to get the PS4/vita bundle(please make it happen).

having grown up without playing much playstation games this will be a brand new fresh start, currently I only played the last of us and God of war 1 and 2 on my brothers PS3.

And Can’t wait to play PS classics on my ipad, and im sure it will be easy to play PS games on tablets and smart phones thanks to bluetooth and the bluetooth PS controllers.

This was the news I was waiting way before the announcement of the PS4.

  • Wow sounds like from his reply to my early post, that this Streaming service has no connection whatsoever to our downloads.

So the only way to play a game I already own digitally, with this service, is to pay for it again!

Wow…. I guess I’ll never use this then, I’ll stick with ps3 on ps3 etc.. until you do that Genkai streaming thing that was talked about pre launch to let us play game we already own on the other systems.

Not falling for yet another Sony money gouge.

  • Sounds intresting , but do you guys have any news about a release of the PSVITA TV in US and EU ????

I wanna play my VITA games with my DS3 .

  • Please bring this to the Nvidia Shield. I have a Vita, but I like how the Shield fits in my hands much more. Plus the battery life is better on the Shield.

  • What if I already own the physical or digital copies of the games on PS3, PS2, or PS1? Will I be able to stream that as well?

  • This sounds like a fantastic service my question’s are 1) If we own the games digitally that are being offered will we be able to stream them free of charge? 2) A subscription service was mentioned and since I and so many others pay for PS Plus now, will PS Plus cover PS Now or will we receive a discount on it? and my final question is when will PS Now roll out to Canadian users?

  • PlayStation Now and the Cloud based TV service that was announced at CES both sound awesome.
    Beta invite please.

  • Good stuff. Can’t wait to see it blossom.

  • so when will ps4 be able to play audio cds, mp3s and work with bluetooth universal remotes and headsets?
you know updates that don’t require a subscription?

  • Lol @ the reply suggesting that the “Share” feature Is a reason to own the PS4, even if this service lets you play all the games in the future without a ps4. (eventually)

I would pay Sony to remove the “Share” feature from my console.

  • Will it allow me to play Vita and PSP games on my PS4 or PS3 as well?

  • Is it only renting and streaming games? Can we buy PS3 titles that are streamed individually on PS4?

  • So what about my games I have on disk? Will I still have to pay a fee to play them on ps4?

  • So no Canada? Why not?

  • Where do i Sign up for Beta =P and Congrats Sony on your 4.2 Million Unit sold happy to be part of that number =D

  • Very nice, and would be really awesome if it streams PlayStation 2 and PlayStation games. Can’t wait to get into the beta and test this new service!!

  • Wow. Very nice. How do we get involved with the beta? I’d love to be signed up for it.

  • OK ..NOW this is what im talking about..i hope the service doesn’t cost an ARM AND A LEG..because remember we do have to add this to our PLUS account. Ive been talking about this kind of service to my friends ever since the PSP came out..i guess patients is a virtue..and NOW is the time to get our gaming tech a little more advanced. I cant wait to play all my PSN games on my Vita..Although this service will be no use if there is no internet around ..like for example if im on the bus or train or plane..i wont be able to play my PS3 or PS4 games on my Vita..:/ In this case just make a decoder update to allow us to play any PS game on any device..NOW thats something that will make you say…WOW!! :p

  • Hey look at that! SONY >> Steam service :)

    Wow, seriously, this is amazing.

  • This is a game changer. In my opinion, if this is implemented properly, the backwards compatibility will become the #2 selling point of the PS4, second only to the PS4 exclusives lineup. I can only hope that as someone who has over 1,200 pieces of digital content (games, movies, dlc, themes, avatars, etc.) downloaded onto my 1TB PS3, North of 20 games on my vita, and 6 digital games on my PS4, the pricing model give me credit for being a good customer last generation and charge only a nominal upgrade fee to play my old stuff on the PS4. Something like what Nintendo has done with their pricing model to upgrade Wii virtual console purchases to Wii U virtual console titles.

  • I guess I’m one of the only ones who isn’t on board with the whole PS Now phenomenon. My thing is that I already have a huge backlog of games, full PS3 Games, downloadable PS3 games, and games for the Vita (I also have Plus), so my question is: What do I need with a streaming service when I already have all of those games. It might be good as a rental service, but I’m not buying anything unless I can either hold it in my hand or download it to my system.

  • So what if you already a game but you just want to be able to play it on a different system???

  • This reminds me of the Sega Channel days.

I really hope i don’t have to rebuy older games, It would be awesome if we can pop in the disk and go.

  • Can’t wait for it to come to Vita!!!!

  • Definitely want in on the beta!

  • definitely hope to get in the beta :D this sounds awesome and I can’t wait to try it out on my Vita/PS3/PS4

  • Will I be able to use current cloud saves from my current games to pick up progress on the PSNow?

  • Would love to be a part of the close beta cant wait to play ps3 games on my vita and ps4!

  • The realization of the Gaikai partnership? Sign me up.

I know that PS1/PS2 games will be up later, but my question is this:

If PS1/PS2 game streaming is implemented, will the library of games be limited to those already on the Playstation Store, or will Sony and its partners work towards releasing PS1/PS2 classic games for this platform?

For example, the PSN store has been good on bringing PS1/PS2 classics to the store in one form or another, but there are still a few very important stragglers remaining, such as Suikoden II through V, Einhander, Brave Fencer Musashi, and Einhander. If hardware was the limitation before, as well as the sales issue, will Sony be more interested in bringing these titles on board for Playstation Now, if they are brought in as part of a subscription?

    Thanks a lot.

  • There’s only one question.

How does a long time Playstation fan get into this closed Beta?

  • Now if we would just get the Vita TV in the US it would be perfect. A $99 deck of cards sized console that can stream your PS4, PlayStation Now, and turn any TV into a smart TV… Sony would be idiots if they didn’t release it in the west… Or at least let me use my US PSN account on the one I already have! ;)

  • I’m still kind of confused as to what this is. Will this be like netflix and have an unlimited access to a lot of games for a monthly subscription fee? or do you just pay a certain amount i to just access to a game for a certain period of time?

  • A lot of people around the internet are asking if there is a possibility to use physical PS3 disks as a license for streaming a game on PSNow (when using the PS4). Is this something you guys have discussed internally? There is a great deal of concern over needing to re-purchase games that we have already invested in.

  • Did someone at Sony say beta? :p

    I’m excited :)

  • If ps now let’s me stream games I currently have purchased on my psn account to my ps4 than this will be a good thing. I will not pay one dime more to stream a game I already own. If that’s the case I will just keep my ps3 right next to my ps4.

  • Canada get f’ed in the eh! again. Thanks Sony for excluding us again, I bet we won’t get the service until much later either.

Glade to be a proud support of a company that ignores me and my country.

  • As long as I can purchase, I’m all for this. I have no desire for another subscription….

  • Please allow free access to games you’ve already purchased on the PSN. I don’t want to pay for The Last of Us again.

  • How do I get in on the Beta? I have PS4, PS3, PS2, Vita, broadband, everything! I WANT IN!

  • How do I sign up for the beta? I would love to check out this service, it sounds amazing!

  • I hope Dark Souls 2 makes it to the service!!! Had dark souls buried in my ps3 backlog and for some reason never played it but after getting a bit tired of my ps4 shooters (killzone, battlefield) moved back to my ps3 and am now deeply entrenched and frustrated in the game. Can’t wait for dark souls 2 sad not to see it on the ps4 but even though this new streaming service seems like it has potential I don’t think I can wait till the summer to see if dark souls 2 makes it there…will probably end up pre-ordering it soon. No one tell my wife though!!! :)

  • where do i sign?
