This week, PlayStation Plus members can take to an ever-changing race track when Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed enters the PS Vita Instant Game Collection. The ‘transformed’ part references the fact that your go kart isn’t always cemented to the pavement – if your route should all of a sudden require your little kart to, say, fly, it will. Yep, your vehicle is constantly morphing back and forth between kart, plane and boat, so you’ll have to master each type if you want to win.

You can download Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed on PS Vita and take advantage of all these PS Plus discounts after the PlayStation Store updates tomorrow, 12/24.

    While the sale isn’t to great with it lacking much Vita games (I know Tearaway and Batman Origins Vita were on that flash sale, but there are many other Vita games like Unit 13 or Hot Shots that could go on sale), getting Sonic Racing on Vita is awesome; such a great port of one of the best Kart racers on PS3 :).

    And for those who missed out on Hotline when it was a Plus game, you really should get it at its bargen price; a very veceral experience that is a ton of fun to play. Thank you for the great year of free games and sales PSN NA, hope next year is even better :).

    And while yes, I did thoroughly dismantle your suggestions and leave you absolutely no wiggle or breathing room to respond, at least you could have tried. I find it amusing that someone who’s probably younger than me is calling me a “kid”.

    @CraddaPoosta: I agree with you somewhat about ports of games already available on phones. I’m all for price parity, but then I was really talking about the IGC where price isn’t the issue. Besides, even with all I’ve read about it I’m not convinced as to who (Sony/Activision/both) is to blame for the plainly ludicrous Angry Birds pricing. Still, I’m not any more impressed than you are about receiving a phone game for free on the IGC when many of those same games are free on phones anyway. I draw a line between phone games and console exclusives to some extent. But I’m still mindful that we barely used to get any free games before the IGC, and what we did get usually sucked back then. So I prefer the way things are now.

    Without delving into all that’s been said between you and Primero, I agree with him that separate Plus programs for indies/AAA titles would likely prove unworkable and even more divisive than the status quo.

    I liked someone’s idea of separate programs for each platform until I realized that would probably fail horribly. With so few Vita owners, their IGC would be awful without all that PS3/PS4 money supporting the entire infrastructure. The way things are set up now, however flawed, is probably the best way IMHO.

    BTW, I think people need to temper their expectations of the IGC going forward (at least regarding AAA titles over the next year or so). Once more people adopt the PS4 and abandon the PS3, that will mean more Plus members since it’s required for online play. Yes, that means a bigger pool of money Sony can use to make deals. But it also means fewer people paying for a game at all if a publisher gives away a just-released game to Plus members. Once the floodgates open with dozens of AAA titles, things will settle and it won’t be a problem for Sony to give them away (almost) every month.[/theory]

    I’m also having trouble accessing the PS Store. Not a big deal, really. But for all those having trouble, it’s not just you.

    @Justin Massongill: I appreciate good customer service, and I realize that things can be confusing if not worded properly. But that guy was out of control. The monthly Plus preview made it clear the game would be free for Vita only. Vita games always join the IGC at the end of the month. All it takes is reading these blog posts as they come along, and not expecting absolute perfection in any aspect of life.

    But I do admire your ability to remain customer-friendly in ANY situation.

    I didn’t say there was NO market for indie games. Just that it feels very, very, VERY much forced with the Vita scene. Yeah, it’s comparable to any other touch-screen device, but that doesn’t mean that it is the darling of indie developers, or that gamers prefer indie titles.

    Give me a Squeenix or Capcom game over a $6.99 indie offering, any day.

    Ah, I’m starting to see your point more clearly now. I tend not to pay as much attention to what’s happening with the Vita simply because I don’t own one. I’m somewhat more sympathetic to gripes from Vita-only Plus members that they don’t get much besides indie games and PSP stuff from years ago (a situation which seems to be improving…maybe). More sympathetic than I am toward PS3-only gripes, that is. We get quite a lot for the money. And of course those with more systems get even more content for one low price.

    I’m not going to sit here and act like I’ve been a saint, or that you have. But I agree we have a pleasant conversation going, and I always prefer that over the alternative. Cheers.

    Something funny for anyone interested…

    Then he comes back this week saying “don’t even put the word troll”. Now I know why. He realized how much it would backfire.

    Out of curiosity, I Googled “CraddaPoosta troll” to see what would come up… and guess what? The first thing I find is a thread on GameFaqs for Kersploosh where the one and only CraddaPoosta is arguing with multiple people, ALL OF WHOM ARE CALLING HIM A TROLL, because as usual, someone pointed out how he was wrong about something, he couldn’t handle it, and let his facade of being a respectable person slip away, revealing his true jackass nature. Saying, “run along little boy” to everyone who disagrees with him is a regular occurrence with this guy.

    And it can backfire in other ways… you might get more people to see what I’m saying, and they might actually side with me.

    Casual games are not the only victim of a commercial market trying to force a scene. Think about anything retro, in general. It’s prevalent in the music industry, in the movie industry, in fashion, in art. Every marketer thinks everyone wants to be cool and hip and in-the-know or a part of some undiscovered and under-appreciated art-form. So, indie games, in this example, are touted as these fantastic gems that only the cool people “get”.

    Just because something is independent or unique doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good, or in demand. Just that it’s being presented as a new genre for hip cats to groove to. Can you dig it?

    The main appeal of indie games is that they’re coming from “common people” who’ve always dreamed of bringing their visions to life. It feels “closer to home” and consumers get a feeling of empowerment from it. Sony isn’t “forcing” a scene, paranoid nutter. They’re simply reading and reacting to the impulses displayed by the consumer base. If something is catching people’s attention, marketers want to capture it and serve up their own branded versions of it. It’s a common business practice. There’s no forcing of anything. When a trend cools off, as it naturally does over time, the suits will jump ship with the masses, keeping their finger on the pulse of what’s hot at the moment. They don’t force what’s popular, they simply corner it, capture it, and re-distribute it for profit.

    “Retro” is popular because the people from the eras labeled “retro” are grown-ups now with money to spend, and for some reason, nostalgia has always tugged on the heartstrings. Once again, we have an example of the big wigs reading and reacting to the pulse of the masses, which is based on ACTUAL psychology-based studies of consumer trends and how they develop, rather than the pseudo-psychology you’ve spewed on multiple occasions.

    @CraddaPoosta: I’m sure on some level indie games are seen as “trendy” by marketers. It’s clear that you think so and are repulsed by it. Plus you consider a lot of them garbage, as I do.

    Maybe it’s my age (39), but I just don’t care any more about what’s trendy. I don’t like something because the “cool kids” do, and I don’t dislike it for that reason either. Not saying I’m immune to subtle influences in media and such. But I don’t avoid buying things that other people consider cool/uncool.

    For the most part, I like some indie games (while not caring about most of the others) because I can get $5 worth of game for $5. Sometimes I can get $5 worth of game for free with the IGC. Or $3 with Plus discounts, etc. It may have happened once or twice that I paid $10-15 for a PSN game, but it’s exceptionally rare. I wait for sales on those types of games, and I generally don’t buy unless I get a price I like. But the little games I wind up with provide whatever experience they do for as long as it lasts. Better in a lot of cases than paying full price for a game with better production values that’s exactly as short as a game I can get on PSN for $3, IMHO.

    Just thought I’d point out that with the limited number of Vitas in the wild, and the presumably low attach rate for sales on software, the only titles that can really benefit from the Vita IGC are indies. The few AAA titles we get for the system can’t afford to be free anytime close to release, as even the profits they make from 50-75% off sales is likely more than whatever cut of subscription fees they’d get from the IGC. This is why a lot of the AAA titles we get are Sony published.
    And it probably has more to do with simple economics than “trying to push a scene”. The reason EU can get these games for free sooner, or at larger discounts, is partially due to exchange rates and also possibly has something to do with sales targets. If they’ve already hit their goals for a region, then it’s less damaging to give a game away for free or greatly discounted, than in a region where they are still far from hitting sales targets. This is probably why we still haven’t gotten something like Unit 13 in the IGC. It’s budget was too large and Sony would take too big a loss per consumer to give it away for free, if those same consumers might at some point buy the game, even for only $5-$10.

    Personally, I find myself more likely to play the smaller titles and indie games on my Vita, as they are much more pick up and play friendly. And the vast majority of “phone games” coming to the Vita aren’t ridiculously overpriced. It’s Angry Birds, and pretty much only Angry Birds. Most of us know who to blame for that and it isn’t Sony. Most mobile ports I’ve bought have been fairly cheap. And considering the production costs to port the games over, the lack of ads, and the value-add to the consumer of having trophies, I think the $3-$8 range I’ve seen on most of them is well worth it.

    @AizawaYuuichi: I don’t have a Vita, and I’m sure you kinow a lot more about economics than I do. But that’s basically what I was trying to say about the IGC for PS4 in an earlier post. We’re likely to get a ton of indies for PS4 until some of the AAA titles start actually making enough money to justify giving them away on the IGC. The installed user base of Plus members with PS4s will stay installed, so to speak. They won’t be willing to give up access to key features like online play. So once you allow your game to be added the IGC for PS4, you’re pretty much giving up on ever selling another digital copy.

    We’re in a unique era of gaming. Never before has the entire world been this inter-connected, and never before has the availability of games of all genres been so huge and wide. You remember the 8-bit era, when franchises had hard limits on how many games they could release every year, and if a company put out three stellar titles in an entire year, that was huge.

    What I mean by “forcing the scene” is that in the case of indie games in particular, it FEELS like it’s being presented as, “All the cool kids love indie games, and since you’re a cool kid, you’ll dig THIS.”

    Being into things that others have not discovered or appreciated yet doesn’t really have an age limit. This is just another facet of being superior to the Joneses, beyond merely keeping up with them.

    My opinion on the indie scene has less to do with the quality of the games themselves, and more to do with how they are marketed to gamers in the first place.

    Even worse, after the confusion on here about which Sonic was being made available to plus members, today I get an email from Sony saying the PS3 version is available for free to plus members. So how about it Sony, are you going to honor your own sales email literature or not?

    Thanks to @Justin Masongill for updating the the title and article – much better now.

    One thing though – I just got an email from “Playstation”, subject line “New Updates to Playstaton Plus”.

    In the email there are a lot of photos, on the Sonic photo it says PS3. Not vita, Not PSN Not PS4, It clearly says PS3. When you click on the link in the photo it takes you to the website for SEN and the PS3 version. Looks like I’m not the only 1 who was confused. At this point Sony should give the PS3 version to PS+ subscribers just to save face.

    Here’s the page that the email takes you to when you click on “View as webpage” at the top of the email. You can clearly see the PS3 on Sonic. Well if it ever gets past moderation you will. I know there must be a way to make a link get through moderation – leave off a / or something – but I dont teel like messing around with trial and error stuff at midnight.

    @AizawaYuuichi Everything you say is completely true. Mobile games are not overpriced at all. If anyone is to blame of Angry Birds’s expensive prices, it’s got to be Activision. Rovio has nothing to do with it because they just make the game. It ain’t Sony’s fault either because the publishers just put it on their consoles. But no, people are just too stupid to realize that.

    @HemiSync101 They don’t have to give a ef on what you say. They said Vita version in the beginning of this month, they give us the Vita version. Do yourself a favor and slap yourself in the face for trying to boss them around.

    Just for fun, I just checked how many posts Cool Whip has made on this topic that I haven’t even responded to or acknowledged. About a dozen.

    Desperate. LOL. Writing essays, just DESPERATE for me to actually acknowledge a single one of his “points”.

    It must CRUSH you so, to put in that much effort, just to be ignored. That must remind you of your childhood. Mommy wasn’t there, was she? No wonder you’re the way you are. Gotta get some kind of victory, SOMEWHERE, right?

    Indie games are terrible. How much does that burn you up when I say that? Indie games are awful. How much butthurt does that inflict on you? Indie games are bad. How much negativity does that phrase being typed by me on a blog introduce into your life?

    That’s the proof, anyway; the fact that you have put your whole life on hold, half a dozen times, so you could spend the next ten or twenty minutes devoted to the emotional state that my presence on this blog on the internet puts you into.

    You know how much pleasure and joy that brings me, right? You can’t even back out, now. You’ve already gone whole-hog on your anti-Poosta offensive, here. I’ve seen few people implode as much as you, over a disagreement on game genres.

    @HemiSync101: I got that same e-mail. Pretty sure we all did. Doesn’t mean jack. Anyone who clicked on the link to the web store in that e-mail would quickly find that the game was free for Vita only. Anyone who regularly follows this blog would have seen last month’s Plus preview. ‘Twas always a Vita game.

    But…

    They did the exact same thing a month or two ago: They sent out an e-mail with the PS3 logo instead of Vita over a certain IGC game. It piqued my interest, so I clicked on it. “Ah, that’s what I thought.” It was free for Vita only. I took their little survey and gave it the lowest possible score because it might cause confusion. Looks like nobody learned anything from the experience.
