PlayStation Meeting 2013: PlayStation 4 is The Future of Gaming

PlayStation 4

Today is an exciting day for gamers everywhere. As you may have seen live with millions of others across the world, just moments ago we introduced PlayStation 4 (PS4), our next-generation console that will deliver breakthrough gaming experiences for our fans starting this holiday season.

PlayStation 4 is centered on all of you – the gamers. It redefines rich and immersive gameplay with powerful graphics and speed, intelligent personalization, deeply integrated social capabilities, and innovative second-screen features. When we designed PlayStation 4, we focused on building an architecture that will allow the greatest game developers in the industry to push boundaries and dig deep within their imaginations to create the most immersive and unique games for you to enjoy.

Killzone: Shadow Fall

The future of PlayStation is all about great games and entertainment, and at PlayStation Meeting 2013, we brought some of the brightest and most creative minds from the development community on stage to unveil the games that will define PS4. A partial initial lineup for PlayStation 4 includes first-party games from Guerilla Games (Killzone: Shadow Fall), Sucker Punch (inFamous Second Son), Evolution Studios (Driveclub), and Japan Studio (Knack), as well as titles from our partners such as Activision/Bungie (Destiny), Blizzard Entertainment (Diablo III), Capcom (Deep Down), and Ubisoft (Watch_Dogs). PlayStation also reinforced its commitment to self-publishing and the independent development community by having Jonathan Blow onstage who gave a sneak peek of his upcoming title The Witness. Finally, the incredible minds at Media Molecule and Quantic Dream gave glimpses of their conceptualization process and the future of gameplay with some remarkable footage. We only scratched the surface at the event, and will have many more exciting titles to come.

With so much amazing content in development for PlayStation 4, we want to give our fans every opportunity to check out virtually any PS4 game when it becomes available. In the future, when a gamer sees a title of interest in PlayStation Store, they can immediately start playing a portion of the actual game.

Our next generation console will change the way you interact with friends while you play. PlayStation 4 lets you instantly share images and videos of your favorite gameplay moments on Facebook with a single press on the DUALSHOCK 4 controller’s “share” button. You can also broadcast while you play in real-time through Ustream, allowing friends to comment or jump into your game in new ways. Be sure to check out the post from Shu Yoshida, WWS President, for his thoughts on DUALSHOCK 4 and the “share” features.

With PlayStation 4 we also want you to access your games quicker than ever before. PS4’s “suspend mode” eliminates the load time on your saved game and allows you to immediately return to where you left off by pressing the power button. PlayStation 4’s background downloading and updating capability also allows you to immediately play digital titles as they download, or update the system when the hardware is powered off.

Leveraging PlayStation Network with Gaikai technology, PS4 will make it easier for you to play your favorite games and access content wherever you are. We see PS Vita as the ultimate companion device for PS4 and it’s our long-term vision to make most PS4 games playable on PS Vita, so you can bring your favorite games from the big-screen TV to your PS Vita over Wi-Fi. We’re also introducing a “PlayStation App” for iPhone, iPad, and Android devices that acts as a second screen, allowing for unique gameplay possibilities such as viewing maps during an adventure game or remotely watching friends play during an epic battle—right from a smartphone or tablet.

With so much to look forward to in 2013, I want to take a moment to thank you for following PlayStation through our incredible journey and allowing us to bring the most advanced hardware, software and networked gaming experiences into millions of homes around the world. We’re excited about this next chapter, and will continue to provide you with more details about PlayStation 4 and the broader PlayStation ecosystem, as we get closer to launch this holiday season.

  • great showing!!! but up top theres no mention of blizzard, i thought that was a key announcement.either way cant wait to get my PS4

  • Blizzard were at the show they announced that Diablo 3 will be coming to PS4

  • I love the new controller its still somewhat the same but upgraded i just hope its not to heavy :o thats just one thing… i hate about the xbox controller IM SO EXITED FOR THIS CONSOLE
    * Operation Mid-Night Release Ready. Awaiting Confirmation details* :D

  • What about cross-controller….?

  • LOL I misread your comment sorry bud :)

  • Looks good. I hope the devs can continue to do amazing things with the hardware, and I can’t wait to see what kind of performance improvements we’re going to see with it.

There’s still plenty of life in my ps3 though, given that I just replaced it right around this time last year. But, whatever.

Hope we see Fallout 4 early on with the PS4!

  • IMO Blizzard and Sony was a bad decision that company is running itself into the ground with their fans. Also PlayStation having nerve damage and hand injuries keep some players from using the Dualshock.. i still have and use my sixaxis and buy them specifically when i get a chance.. lighter as well :P

  • Sold! Day 1! 8GB GDDR5 is all I needed to hear. Love the whole “PS4, the Creative Console” thing, it channels old Amiga 500 superbowl commercials.

Just let my wife and kid sign in and earn Trophies alongside me and don’t “require” my real name on the new social framework, and we’re GOLDEN Sony! Keep up the good work!

  • Playstation app!! Oh i can see the possibilities.

  • any chance for the streaming service to be used on other live streaming sites like Twitch?

  • Not going to lie this sounds nice, but PS3, i feel like it is at the top of the mountain right now. Great games are coming out for it and whats the point of buying a new system if it isnt going to support ps3 games… that is the worst decision i have ever heard of. the wiiu did it right they gave you the choice to play either or, and the console wasnt that expensive. I feel like they want to beat xbox to the punch and this is going to backfire in there face hard. i dont want to get this console no point.any one else feel the same way?

  • such a disappointment.

    no backward compatibility… Really?

  • I thought…. they said it would play ps1,ps2,ps3………..

  • @Waspinator,

When did anyone say that? Who is “they”?

  • In the show… i thought they said playing the older games is a priority..

  • they said the PS4 can play PS1 2 3 games via the Gaikai cloud service. and you have to re-buy all the old games and can’t even own it physically or digitally.

  • gimme my 10$ the I’ll buy your ps4.

  • Well even if they add all the titles to the service that would be alright.. i cant see them throwing away everyones PSN purchases and making them re purchase on another store…. Also thanks PSN for the $10.00 Also adding a rental store to the mix would be nice for game rentals as well as movie rentals.

  • Please for the love of gaming, be backwards compatable…

  • So much Jelly today you’d figure Mr.Cosby was walking around.

  • @ Falaut LoL’d

  • When can I pre-order PS4?????

  • lol @ 8 y. o. the Nintendo fanboy.

  • hehe shhhhhhhhh

  • @ Estoc People these days tend to have a lot of children as that company…. cators to kiddies not the hardcore adult fanbase of gamers.

  • Really nice !

  • Can Sony please take my money right now ;-) I am throwing my wallet at my screen LOL, I am PS4

  • at some point you need to address the backwards compatibility issue. because my ps3 is dead, and if i have to buy another one of those just to play my games, i will not even be close to being able to getting a ps4 at release. also, pricing? i don’t like how the Amazon placeholder is $100 for a game. you better not be going above $60

  • @ estoc No need to be a jerk i have heard Ni no kuni wrath of the white witch is great for Casual players. Love & Peace.

  • What will happen to new games like the last of us? Do I need two consoles?

  • one thing i really hope they do which is awesome on the xbox, but sucks on the ps3 (unless i don’t know how to do it) is that if i have a friend that comes over and wants to keep all his gaming stats solely for him and not mess with my stats, it’s not possible. What i’m saying is there should be an option on the new PS4 to where more than one person can be logged in at once (like the xbox) and trophies kept separate. repost if you agree.

  • Ohh it’s gonna be a hell of a 2013Xmas

  • Really interested in what they have set up for independent studios and new developers, tho playing already purchased games and classic’s is a must and they already know this i would bet the system is not even fully finished with its features. Again having access to all classic titles though software would be great even better if the service was FREE with the ps4.

  • @ Ja1015 they have this feature for some titles already. Borderlands is an example but not sure if player 2 gets trophies tho only a sep save.

  • one thing i really hope they do which is awesome on the xbox, but sucks on the ps3 (unless i don’t know how to do it) is that if i have a friend that comes over and wants to keep all his gaming stats solely for him and not mess with my stats, it’s not possible. What i’m saying is there should be an option on the new PS4 to where more than one person can be logged in at once (like the xbox) and trophies kept separate. repost if you agree.

btw everything on this PS4 sounds extremely promising. The share things seems awesome (don’t know if i’d use it yet or not, but asking a friend to interact in your game to helps sounds amazing) The controllers needed a change. I have friends (and myself included ) have had a lot of trouble holding onto the old style controllers for a while without my hands getting tired

  • @ VVaspInatoR I don’t see what you mean. On the Xross Media Bar I can only login one person at a time and that goes for a PSN acct as well unless i’m really lost and missing something….

  • I notice the cord is still in the back of the camera. I sure hope it’s flexible because where I have to place my ps3, I can’t plug in the current camera because the cord makes it turn because it’s so stiff.

  • I was blown away. I was expecting many of the problems stemming from hardware limitations to be addressed, but sweet mother of god, you guys have outdone yourselves.

I am absolutely thrilled that so much attention has been put on simplicity and responsiveness. I am so tired of syncing my trophies and installing stuff. Hearing how much of a focus has been put on this stuff is music to my ears.

I can’t wait until the end of the year.

  • @ Ja1015 once borderlands is loaded up and your in your profile or signed into your account when the player 2 chooses to play they can sign into another account that’s on the system as well for a save file for their character tied to there account if you wanted it so.

  • @ VVaspInatoR I understand I can just log out of my name on the Xross media bar, and log into hers, but i can’t play more than PSN acct at the same time….. Like Xbox 360 allows more than one log in at a time……? I don’t play the xbox very often, but my brothers would get pissed at each other when one was not logging into his own gamer tag???? Like i said, I’m not very sure, but i think that’s what i mean

  • @VVaspInatoR so you’re saying that with that game I can log into two different PlayStation Network Accounts at the same time? (but, of course, not sure about trophies, Right?)

  • LETS AV IT !!!!!!!

  • @ ja1015 Very Very few games support this feature and it is… kinda useless unless you can cloud save your save then download it when you go home if the other account just so happened to have ps plus. But again i know it only creates a save tied to the other account not sure if it allows the 2nd player trophies.

  • q nuevo como xq ps3

  • I have mixed thoughts about this. I’m excited that PlayStation is releasing the PS4, and granted the games look amazing. But, I just think it could be too soon. Sure, we may be seven years into this Gen, but there are still great games that are being made and are about to be released in the near future on the PS3. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all down for the PS4 (because frankly, I don’t want to waste $4,000 on a PC, OR have to purchase an Xbox just for it to break down on me within two years), but the timing of the release…

However, if Sony were to take a break from all of the FPS’ and focus on some Free Roam/Adventure, RPG- like games, then it’s checkmate for me and I’ll buy one Day One.

Just all around, it’s a hit or miss. I’ll have to wait for E3. Oh, and I don’t really care about BC. I still have all of the PlayStation consoles, so if I wanted to play some Ripto’s Rage, I can just boot up the PSone.

  • I’ve liked what I seen at the PlayStation Meeting 2013. I’ve always liked Sony for their JRPG Titles. The PS3 offered some JRPG’s such as Tales of Graces F. So Sony, There is a lot of JRPG gamers here, provide us with the rich games like what you’ve given us with the PS1 and PS2. So mainly me, I stick with you solely because I have faith in what you guys might do in the future. Maybe since the PS4 is so powerful, maybe hit us with a MMORPG. I was glad to see the controller looking the same. The new features are cool, as long as they don’t interfere too much with the gaming itself. Yes, I’m now going to rant about Backwards capability, as long as I have my freedom of speech, So Backwards capability, may seem like a “Not important” feature to have, not many people are bothered by not having it, but it will make alot of Sony Consumers happy, and isn’t that what you want? lastly, Data. Let us import every bit of data we purchased from you from our PS3 to the PS4, even if that means that once we import our data, the data can no longer exist on the PS3. I’ll also want to see the PS4 being able to communicate with friends on the PS3 who are unable to convert to the new system at the time.

  • My sole concern is whether there is the option to purchase games physically. If it’s digital only, then I won’t buy it. There are just to many things that can go wrong to warrant dropping 60, 70, 80 dollars on a non tangible item. If I have a physical copy and Sony goes under, servers crash, psnid gets hacked or disrupted, or something else untoward happens, I still have my game. It’s mine and no one can take that away from me.

The only other comment I have concerns the emphasis on social gaming or social engineering as I call it. I really hope this doesn’t detract from solid one person only games. I hate this movement in current gaming that thinks the only good games are ones that we need to play online with each other, hold hands and sing kum ba ya and be friendly. I have enough friends thank you very much and don’t need to be forced to be social when I game. It’s one of the reasons why I’m hesitant about the new GoW game as from many reviews, the solo game leaves much to be desired as all the emphasis went to forcing us to play with others. Give me a solid single person game any day, and my money is yours. Mandatory multiplayer online games…will never be purchased.

  • @ TripG I know what you mean plus a lot of collectors want collectors editions only upside to digital is they cant get burned in case of a fire LoL
