UPDATE: Text smoothed, gameplay video added above

At PAX 2012, Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima showed off 15 11 minutes of gameplay footage from his upcoming PS3 game Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. The demo began with an in-engine cinematic set in a rain-drenched prison camp. The sprawling camp showed off FOX Engine’s advanced shader, lighting, and particle effects. Mud glistened and rain danced amidst the pervasive, bone-chilling gloom. As the cinema continued, we met a mysterious man with a mutilated face and wide-brimmed hat who later led troops away from the base, kicking the footage into a gameplay demo as Naked Snake (Big Boss) moved into position.

The prison camp – a huge open-world environment riddled with entry points – pointed to an evolution of MGS3 and MGS4’s sandboxes. As Snake made his way closer, Kojima pointed out nearby APCs and helicopters and confirmed that Snake could commandeer and pilot them if the player desired. As if to prove the point, Snake then hopped into a Jeep to gain access to the base, evading a roaming tank in the process. Snake then deployed a flare to deploy a friendly helicopter, something Kojima said that players could do “at any time.” The helicopter will enable you to fly between missions and even to other countries. Kojima also even mentioned that the player will be able to customize the music played by the helicopter, which in the demo blared out Ride of the Valkyries.

“We’re not going to say that it’s Metal Gear Solid 5,” Kojima said after the demo, “but it is a prologue.” Kojima explained that the demo video was a recording of gameplay rendered on PC hardware that was similarly equipped to a PS3, and that the final game should closely resemble the video.

Kojima also mentioned that he is personally overseeing the creation of Ground Zeroes. Watch the video demo at the top of this post to see Ground Zeroes in action.

  • Wooow! Awesome! But… multiplatform?! That’s a terrible notice! Snake was a symbol of the PlayStation platforms. Don’t lose it like Crash Bandicoot Sony!

  • @Everyone who is crying that that this is not a Sony exclusive.

You are not a true Metal Gear or Kojima fan if you think that MGS should be restricted to a single console. Kojima has expressed in the past how he would like for everyone to be able to play MGS no matter what system they have. All you want is a reason to gloat about it on the internet because it’s the only way you know how to deal with your inferiority. If this is the way you think… stop playing Metal Gear, you obviously don’t care about the story and the messages within it. I’m happy that Kojima is deciding to take this route. You should be too… sales for this Metal Gear will be double (at least) than MGS4. I’ll probably buy all versions of this game for each system. If this does come out for current gen, PS3 is already the better console for the simple fact that there’s blue ray. Imagine having to switch discs in a giant open world MGS game on the 360… that would really suck, so there, we already will be getting the superior version.

  • I love how nearly every website I go to someone seems to be convinced this could never be a current gen game, yet on here, Kotaku, and even the official anniversary Konami website have confirmations that it is. Even the second poster on the Konami website had current gen systems in its credits.

  • Will this have online? If so I hope, I hope it’s better then the fourth.

  • @51
I approve this message. It’s as if they don’t realize MG first appeared on MSX and NES!
It’s not like it has always been exclusive to Sony…
It’s a GOOD thing when everyone can enjoy a game, no matter their console.

Also, Kojima had said MGS4 pushed 1 blu-ray disc to the max.
So, I have a feeling this may be the first 2-blu-ray disc PS3 game we see.

  • The extended gameplay trailer NEEDS to be on the PSN!!! We NEED to download it on our PS3!!!!!

  • @58 I said technically inferior. Not necessarily a bad game, but a lower quality one. Its a shame that two of the best looking video games, Metal Gear Solid 4 , and still are far more advanced than multiplatform games that come out today. I am not buying because its on an other system, I am discouraged because as a rational person it is clear that multiplatform games inherently are lower quality than PS3 exclusives and Kojima this how you do sony put this on 360 and mgs first come out on ps1 keep it on playstation

  • MG first appeared on MSX and NES! but i never care about mgs tell it hit ps1 so thank to sony ps1 we all fall in love with mag

  • hahahahahahahahahahahh ”PC hardware that was similarly equipped to PS3′ ‘
all know this not true!!! because MGS is for xbox too and xbox can’t handle ”big” games like this!!!!!
Im sure ps3 has low textures like xbox and xbox need this to accommodate in less dvd

  • Ok Sony! Please dont fall sleep with the
Ps1 releases ok iam still waiting for my
Favorite game to pop up on the Ps1
    Section,please make more releases soon.
We only have 26 titles come on release more.

    Favorite Game:
    Mortal Kombat Triology
    Castlevania:SOTN

  • Yeah!! I love Metal Gear Solid

  • I’ve been playing since NES days, and never been disappointed yet. Keep them coming.

  • I used to be a Mr Kojima’s fan but now you can see that business has turned him into an xbox lover, Kojima should learn something from Quantic Dream Mr Cage and don’t forget that the playstation community is the reason why he is a famous developer, obviously I’m not excited for this multiplatform game.

  • Oh dear me….I love Kojima.

  • Why is this also for Xbox and PC?
Not fair! I thought the MGS series is a playstation exclusive. >_<

Xbox fan boys will pretty sure rejoice. lol

  • wow I can wait to play it… ima pre order it tomorrow

  • #129 PS3 could handle itself fine with or without MGS you should know that if your a supporter of PS System yourself:: as a Fan of Hideo Kojima and MGS Series i dont give a crap if its multiplatform im just glad they are going back to the good ol’ days of stealth and good story writing.

    Laugh & Grow FAT!!

  • I”M really excited for this game omg it’s been a while THIS RISING, Resident EVIL i mean OMG this is just crazy i love the graphics and it looks so smooth FOX engine took it to the next level and i’m sure when we get next generation consoles FOX engine (and whatever Square Enix engine will be) are gonna be the TOP of the line game engines man i cannot wait……………… (don’t wanna spam cannot wait but want to so bad!!!!!)

    on another note

From the looks of things it will be multiplatform but i really don’t care about that in the end we all know the facts on the hardware the PS has to OFFER and what the 360 has at this point it isn’t even a argument plus black ops isnt a great comparison seeing that trey-arch exhibited some serious favoritism by giving us a POOR version of black ops instead of just late DLC as the contract stated

  • 1 word that describes Metal Gear Solid : Ground Zeroes………….EPIC

  • If you think for one second kojima is going to do what bethesda does, which is just copy and past an xbox game over to ps3 without optimizing the code for the split memory pool. Then I guess you should take your mgs4 game and burn it. You know, because it works 100% perfectly. Unlike, well every bethesda game ever. So if you think kojima will let some thing like this happen just leave the mg franchise all ready since clearly you have no faith in one of the last good jp dev’s.

  • I am a huge MGS fan. Will there be a PS Vita MGS game also? I would love to see MGS 4 on the vita, or a new MGS game on the Vita as well. I will defenitly get MGS Ground Zeroes when it is available for the PS3. Thanks Kojima and keep them coming.

  • I can’t believe we lost this exclusive >.<. Can we atleast get some PS Move Support or/and Vita integration?!?!

  • GODLY STUFF KOJIMA :P

  • Snake is back baby!

  • Spectacular. And I wondered what the hell was Kojima working on.

I don’t mind it being multiplatform, as long as it works well on every platform (f-u, Skyrim). Being on several platforms increases the chance for it to be a commercial hit, which in turn would persuade Konami to keep doing more of them, and to spend even more resources in their development.

A Konami with more money would be good for gamers. That combined with the fact that Kojima wants other Konami IPs to use FOX Engine means we could see bigger and better Castlevanias and Silent Hills, just to name those two.

  • Will buy day one like all MGS games (but the portable ones since I don’t have a portable console). Man, this is good news, I was sure Kojima wanted to end the MGS serie forever. Now I’m more happy haha! The story, the controls, the graphics, everything is perfect in those games!

  • THERE IS A GOD THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!

  • All way’s will be a MGS fan and the way I look at it if it wasn’t for MGS. Sony and PlayStation would not be as big as it is today. heck back in the day I would have never bought a PlayStation until I played MGS. The sole reason for buying a PS1 was for MGS.

  • Looks like an interesting rental. I didn’t care much for MGS4 or most of the psp side games, but i loved MGS 2 and 3.

  • The game looks awesome. I am gonna get Rising because honestly I think it has a lot to do with the story for after MGS4, but this game looks really awesome.

  • WOW, Something I never saw so beautiful on a console, Can’t wait to play it!!

  • I’m bothered it’s multi-platform.

A game like MGS isn’t suited for the FOREVER-INFERIOR-STILL-USING-DVD-ROM Xbox 360; how many disc will it required?

It’s noted when he was making MGS4, Kojima-san said that MGS is a movie game and the PS3 is a movie games console unlike the Xbox 360.

Furthermore the Xbox 360 has succeeded what the PS3 has failed: CAUSED DEATH BY PLAYING HALO!

  • I don’t care that it isn’t a ps3 exclusive yes it would probably look better if it was instead of them scaling down for 360 but as long as we don’t get treated the way Bethesda treats ps3 users then everything will be fine.

  • Would be nice if it would be a launch game for the next gen consoles! ^_^

  • i dont know much but can someone tell me if mgs4 wouldnt be able to come to xbox cus of the disc sizes. is this new game supposed to be able to be all crammed into one xbox disc because of the new fox engine?

  • Looks awesome. Really seeing forward to this.

  • THIS GAME WILL BE EVEN MORE EPIC,
THE MGS SERIES IS THE BEST EVER CREATED,
    SO THIS WILL BE AWESOME!

  • @ 35: I’d purchase this on PS3 because of the superior graphics and what not, but I don’t think that its going multi-platform is a bad thing. It means that people who cannot afford a PS3 still get a chance to enjoy the game. But to say that you won’t buy it because of that reason is simply shallow, if I do say so myself. I have both a PS3 and a 360, and to be honest, I play my 360 more. That’s mainly for playing with friends. But I love my PS3. I’m a true gamer though. I can appreciate all systems. Even old ones. Still got my Dreamcast over here. Lol
