Scourge: Outbreak Infecting PSN Soon

Since our announcement in May about the upcoming release of our third-person shooter Scourge: Outbreak, we’ve been hard at work wrapping things up and getting the game ready for launch in a couple of months’ time.

We’re especially keen to see players get a kick out of the co-op narrative style that we’ve developed, whereby each of the game’s four playable characters experiences their own unique flashbacks throughout the game. These memories are designed to fit together as a kind of jig-saw puzzle, so the best way to get the full picture is to discuss them with your buddies. Some show dubious details about yourself, while others cast doubt on your squad-mates. Who’s the real enemy? What’s going on? What did you see? Don’t worry… single-player is a complete experience in and of itself, but co-op is where this style of narrative really shines.

We’ve also worked hard on bringing a polished, fluid and action-packed third person shooter to the PlayStation community. Scourge: Outbreak is often compared to other well-established third person shooters, but we’ve tried to capture a faster-paced, less methodical combat feel than what typifies other examples of the genre. Echo Squad’s four members are not simply re-skinned carbon copies of each other. Each boasts different special abilities, as well as different stats that affect weapon handling.

With full single-player and four-player co-op campaign support, plus versus multiplayer modes and maps, we’re confident there will be enough action for everyone.

Many people assume that developing games in Spain must be all sun, sea and fun. Ok, yes… As I write this, it’s a sunny afternoon outside here in Palma — but there’s no time to enjoy it at the moment — we’ve got a game to finish!

  • Will there be split screen co-op?

  • Looks cool. I gonna check it out because I love co-op games. Will there be a demo?

    • Absolutely. You will be able to download the game as a free trial and buy from within the game later on should you wish.

  • all psn games should be release on the psvita as well.

  • Split-Screen?

    • The game comes with no Split Screen option but allows you to play LAN based games and Internet Ranked and Unranked matches.

  • Move Support? …don’t tell me it would destroy the core gameplay games like Infamous, Killzone, and Resistance use it just fine. All i’m asking for is to be able to point to aim. Don’t need waggling mini games injected in.

  • at first glance it looked like GeOW ;D

  • how have i not heard about this? looks sweet, ill keep my eye out for this one

  • Oh look another shooter. I’ll see myself to the door.

I’ll add, the last video looked great. It looks like a good game for those that like shooters.

Hopefully you will finish in enough time to catch a few of the first game of the La Liga season :)

  • hey great game cant wait im really glued to sony games and awsome content this year you guys werent joking about the content for this year awsome cant wait for this game looks really good nice pictures i really like the art work really awsome! any word for a discount for us ps+members let me know thanks!

  • Your last game, The Scourge Project, was panned by critics and was criticised for being poorly made, badly controlling and tedious. It has a Metascore of 44/100.

Destructoid gave the game 2.5/10 and said it was, “a sloppy, unforgivable mess.”

Edge Magazine gave it 3/10 and said it, “plays unbearably clumsily.”

Is this just a reskin of that PC game from 2010? It seems to be listed on Metacritic for PS3/360 but has no reviews and release date is TBA. What changes or improvements have been made to make it worthwhile to hand over whatever you are charging?

I think it’d be better to wait for reviews before getting this game.

    • Thanks for your question. The Scourge Project was an episodic game for the PC — the format and gameplay mechanics were not suited to the console market. When we started working on Outbreak our intention was to create something specially for the console market. We’ve used the core ideas that worked well and build around them from scratch.

You can expect new gameplay mechanics, new (and a higher number of) characters, deeper story line, new AI, and plenty of new locations and maps, a characterization and XP system reflecting into your character evolution, next-gen graphic quality, 4-players in coop campaign and to 8 players in PvP — everything packed with fast-paced action. There are 7+ hours of campaign and 5 multiplayer maps included with DLC still to follow.

  • I almost had a heart attack. I though it said: RESIDENT EVIL OUTBREAK. Darn. Hint hint, lots of RE fans want outbreak to come to current gen consoles. please consider it.

  • when’s the release date??? looks like a good co-op 4 player campaign coming to ps3 finally! been looking for 1 for the past 3 months!

    • We are now polishing the game for final submission which will be soon. Can’t disclose more for now. :)

  • 3 Questions:

    1) How much time was put into crafting the story for the campaign? It seems like you guys wanted to try something new and put focus on it. I like that, just for the record.
    2) Cost?
    3) Multiplayer Modes?

    • (1) The story has been worked in several iterations: the hard part was disclosing bits of information building gradually the player understanding, having all the puzzle pieces in place in the end. This required a great number of hours and sometime involved removing and shuffling around flashbacks to allow the player to have a better understanding of events.
      (2) can’t disclose this one sorry :)
      (3) DM, TDM, Capture the Flag

  • Looks interesting

  • The “four-player co-op campaign”.. Is it local or only through the network?

  • people are asking about split screen co-op, but, although I love playing with a friend on the same couch, I hate the limited vision split screen brings.
So I have a different question: Does this support multi-televisions?If no, why the heck not?
I dream with the day developers will see how this is a great (and a better) alternative for splitscreen.
2 TVs, 2 HDMI cables and a converter so you could have 2 HDMI outputs, and you’re good to go.

Please, the game looks great, so think about this.

  • Is it looks almost similar to Gears of War. But i hope there will be split screen

  • I really hope its regional because Uncharted 3’s servers are really slow since im playing against people in Pakistan

    • The game allow cross region matchmaking but the matchmaking algorithm will try to arrange coop or PvP matches optimal for your ping.

  • Video or it didn’t happen.

  • Will this include a Platinum Trophy?

  • This is a game that i’ll definately watch closely for, more downloadable games such as this would cool.

  • Definitely looks buyworthy. Can we get a date?

  • @10: Bravo!!!!! I had similar questions about this game myself and you have stated them very succinctly.

However, I have my doubts that the developer will answer these questions to our satisfaction – if at all.

Side note: I would have gladly purchased Scourge Outbreak during the recent Steam Summer Sale – but I didn’t want to waste hard-earned money on a game with consistently disastrous reviews.

  • I’m interested in the competitive multiplayer…. will there be perks and leveling up?

    • The game features a leveling up system in four different character’s skill areas – Abilities, Assault, Co-op, and Weapons – for a total of 20 different perks you can obtain. These perks are common to campaign and multiplayer, and you can get XP toward their achievement playing in any game mode. Some of them are easier to level up if you are playing multiplayer PvP than if you are playing campaign, and vice-versa, but they aren’t tied to specific game modes.

That way we feel players can enjoy the whole experience without being limited to play certain game modes. Some of them will be crucial if you want to survive in player versus player game modes, and some will help you finish the hardest difficulty mode in campaign, so you better get them all!

  • Wow, I’ll be keeping an eye on this one. I never heard of it until now. Looks good so far!

  • Looks decent. Will be looking forward to a review.

  • What’s up with the weird resolution on the screenshots? Does the game render in 720p natively with AA?

Are the music and sound effect assets 24-bit and/or losslessly compressed?

Will there be a Vita version?

Does the game have a platinum trophy?

Are any of the payable characters not white?

    • (1) The game render natively at 720p
      (2) All assets are compressed to save space at download, this with the least loss of quality possible
      (3) No Vita version at this time
      (4) Yes a platinum trophy is there
      (5) Not at this time, but maybe it’s a good idea to keep in mind for a sequel

  • Looks DOPE. Nice job. Now when can we get it for how much?

  • online campaign would be so cool

    • Thanks your post. Yes, you will be able to play Campaign online in Single Player and 4 players Co-op modes! :)

  • @Omar Salleh in reference to post #23:

I mistakenly wrote “I would have gladly purchased Scourge Outbreak during the recent Steam Summer Sale” – but I really meant to say “I would have gladly purchased The Scourge Project: Episodes 1 and 2 during the recent Steam Summer Sale”. Thank you for catching my mistake .

Also, I wish to thank you very much for answering post #10’s questions with great details. Your responses have made me look forward to trying out the free trial. I’m a MAJOR fan of good sci-fi shooters and I’m truly hoping that I’ll enjoy the free trial enough to purchase the full game!!!

  • Forgot to ask this question:

Will there be a discount for PS Plus members?

  • I will miss split screen, cause i like to play with someone i can reach over and smack lol. but this game looks interesting, I just might check it out.

  • This game reminds me of Killzone!
