PlayStation Network Scheduled Maintenance Tomorrow

Update
The maintenance is now completed.

PlayStation Nation!

My name is Matthew Harper, and I’m part of the recently-formed PlayStation Digital Platforms Community Management team. Our mission is to keep you better informed about everything that is going on in the wide world of the PlayStation Network, to make your voice heard within the company, and to ensure that you, the gamer, are at the heart of every development across PSN. Together, we will help guide the future of this platform.

I’m here today to let you know that we will be performing routine scheduled maintenance on the network on Monday, April 16th, starting at approximately 6:00 am PDT / 9:00 am EDT. This maintenance will last roughly 13 hours, concluding around 7:00pm PDT / 10:00 pm EDT. During much of this time, users won’t be able to access the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home, Account Management or play online. PSN enabled websites will not be able to service users, including this one.

We will continue to provide as much information as we can regarding any future maintenance we need to schedule.

Keep your eyes on the PlayStation Twitter feed for a notice when PSN is fully back online. We look forward to gaming with you all when the maintenance is finished on Monday night.

  • For once I actually saw the notification on the scroll instead of reading about the outage on another website so that’s definitely good. I know many people don’t read the scroll however so I think it would be nice to have something pop up when you turn the PS3 on. Like when it tells me what saves have been uploaded or what patches have downloaded and I have to press X to proceed. Then there would be no way to miss it. I’m glad there’s someone in charge of this sort of thing now and is going to keep is informed. Keep up the good work.

  • i love maintenance days. gives me a chance to read or do something useful

  • Why do you guys whine so much. They have to do maintenance no matter what. Like you guys cant go 13 hours with out playing online. I find that’s pathetic. Its called going outside, or even just playing single player or playing split screen with your friend…

  • I’m more curious to know of this has anything to do with last years 4/20 fiasco, I don’t mind if you guys are beefing up security but at least be honest, I’ve been seeing things around the web about a possible second strike but its the internet cant believe everything you read with that said lets make this a happy fun 4/20 me, my PS3, and a few bowls of greens plan on doing a lot of gaming that day ;)

  • My downloads from the PSN have been slow for the past few weeks. I hope this speeds things up.

  • hope it involves the youtube app for psvita

  • psn should give away a $50 psn card to every psn user for this

  • I really hope Sony stops being so mum on the whole reasons for maintenance on the servers, people have a right to know what this will do as it disrupts everyone playing the MP for quite some time.

  • Sure, when a lot of us would love to be able.to sign onto PSN to forget about the $ we had to pay Uncle Sam in taxes, you decide to take it down for maintenance for waaaaay too long? These things should be done at a time when the majority of users won’t be affected. Looks like this maintenance time favors all other time zones over North & South America.

  • The down time favors no one @105. Since the network itself is a global one, no matter what time they choose for NA the rest of the world will be affected. Everyone losses.

Sony needs to figure out a way to update the network while allowing us to sign in and play MP without being affected. MS XBL has been able to do this for years now Sony has to step up and do the same.

  • I won’t wish for an update that upgrades to PS3/2/1 platforming.
I won’t even wish for an update that deletes PS1 and overwrites with PS3/2 platforming.
No, I won’t wish that SOCOM goes back to being 3rd person, instead of ‘waist-up person’ gaming; nor will I wish for 3 grenades and all the explosives I can handle ‘explosives crybabies’ be damned(respectful nod to the old school SOCOM warriors).

I’ll just wish for the basics…you know kinda like just being happy the Sun rises the next morning. Real basic.

    I’ll wish for:

A browser that actually functions with playstation websites so you can login AND comment, not just sit there like a dodo bird, waiting for my PC to boot. Where, just like every other website I go to in the cornucopia of websites on the ‘internest’, all the elements load and all the components play well. So shouldn’t it follow that you can login to the blog, forums, etc on an actual Playstation? I mean, how “crazy” is that, huh?

    Just the basics, Lord.

    Amen.

  • SMH, I had Monday off from college. What a coinky-i-dink. I was gonna play Gotham City Imposters all day. Now I might as well study… Its crazy how almost every new game is so multiplayer oriented, so without online, the PS3 is pretty much useless.

So that Matthew guy says that the maintenance time was made randomly. Aren’t most PS3 customers in America? Wouldn’t it be smarter to do the maintenance at like 12am? Its not smart at all to not appease your constituents.

Also, leave Matthew alone, he most likely knows nothing at all except what Sony tells him.

  • Will the ps Vita get a calling app?

  • whenevery i play online (ex. gta 4) it will say every1 left so its only me left in the game…or the ps3 will log me out of psn…idk if its my ps3 thats screwed up…or my connection ???or the servers??? can yaw cgeck that 2 morrow????? thank u

    SONY IS THE BEST

  • THANK YOU for the heads up. Keep up the good work.

I dont get people, they complain when no one tells them there will be maintenance, then when they are told there will be maintenance they complain.

the point of maintenance is to provide continuation of a quality service. no one wants a repeat of last year.

So thank you Sony and thank you Matthew Harper and the whole PlayStation Digital Platforms Community Management team. you guys all rock!!!

  • LOL what? “Aren’t most PS3 customers in America” No most of PS3 customers are outside of America since PS3 is a Japanese console.

Really guys no matter what time they choose everyone will be affected in some form.

  • Of course… Another Monday. Don’t you just love Mondays. I guess it’s also the best day to do it anyway. :P My only downfall here is not being able to play on MW3s Clan Op. -_-

  • UGHH!!! This has been going on alot lately

  • Sony you really need to do updates these long in north america during a time when everyone isn’t online. You need to set up a different update time in the future to keep the costumers happy. I for one am not a fan of these update times because this never happens with my Xbox.

  • Oh well. I could complain, but what’s the use?
13 hours seems a bit excessive for maintenance. Unless there are some nice updates on Tuesday
I’m going to have to say it’s a major security breach they aren’t making public just yet. I really hope not though.

wouldn’t normally mind this, but I just went 6 weeks without my PS3 due to a nice hdd crash, recovery, YLOD, and I just started recovering (RE downloading another 300GB of games) and it’s going to keep me from finishing this.

How about something for our trouble? I’d say $1/per hour we are offline would be sufficient.
I have been unable to get on PSN for 2+ months now yet I’ve still been paying for Plus.

Anyway, please add a media server for local streaming, Google TV, Firefox web browser and we can call it even!

Oh and PLEASE.. for the love of Kratos, give us the option to sort our downloaded games
A-L-P-H-A-B-E-T-I-C-A-L-L-Y!! Some of us have downloaded hundreds of games from PSN. This is just silly that we don’t have the right to sort any of it! I hate trying to play Memory when I want to play an older game that I bought. Anyone else bugged by this? Let them know! Hell, I’d trade the ability to sort Trophies so I can sort my games.

  • do what u have to doo sonyyyy….. i love the ps3 but I’m very dissapointed that they haven’t fix that they should promote sub accounts that are already 18 to a master account. I’m stuck with my sub account 4life nooooo

  • Can you let us know what the maintenance is for? Or why lately they have been so much longer than they used to be?. Tomorrow will not be a good day for me I will miss my ps3

  • damn that sux will this be like realy big update or just an little 1 ?

  • Ok so it kinda ticks me off that im not going to get to play mw3 tomorrow but on another note…since u guys will be working for 13hrs pleaseeeee tell me that ur going to fix the spamming of invites…maybe put something in there that only allows someone to send maybe 5 invites simultaneously instead of allowing 400 invites which is causing gaming devices to crash! Oh and fix the lagging crap… its becoming a nuisance! Tired of being kicked out constantly and so is the rest of the clan! If these two problems can be fixed u will have yourself a happy gamer! Until the next time…peace! :)

  • So, Madden Ultimate team will be down and all auctions, bids, trades, will be, cancelled? Seriously, why on my only day off? why not a friday! Anyways, let me know what will be down on MADDEN altogether please. Thanks

  • Blkant is right. All of us wonder what exactly is accomplished during these maintenance periods. The maintenance periods have indeed gotten longer. they used to be 2 to 4 hours but now are usually 12 plus hours. I cant help but notice that each time one of these 12 hour maintenance periods occurs a lot of psn users get angry and upset. I feel this is mostly due to the fact that we deal with these maintenance periods but don’t see any results from them that impacts us. The same could be said for updates. How many updates have we had that at most address security or stability problems. While these updates are important why not add a new feature now and then. I’m not saying that a new feature should be added with every update but a new feature now and then would be nice. We have dealt with several of these long maintenance periods and from what I hear from other players, they are getting tired of it. *hint hint sony! This is where the new feature comes in. A nice “hey guys thanks for dealing with our 12 hour maintenance periods. To thank and reward you for your patience through these periods we will be adding a new feature to psn with the following update: But please sony no more pointless browser updates.

  • Can you please say if this maintenance has anything to do with the ability of people to play homebrew games on the Vita using games from PSN (which were removed btw)?

If Sony is not making the reason public, I’m guessing it’s an anti-piracy measure. Expect a new EULA + force FW update with no new features is my guess. Oh well, they have to do what they can to stop it, right?

  • Fine. If you gonna take down the network. Then how about a NEW SYSTEM UPDATE! Bump the numbers up. Been awhile having a system update.

I know they are only used if something needs a patch. But something new or update would be alright.

  • Really? PlayStation Digital Platforms Community Management team? Did you really just type that into a blog post for normal people to read? Perfect example of how Sony doesn’t know how to talk to people. Keep those complicated titles internal for the engineers. Come up with something a little more user friendly for Sony’s public face.

  • Hey guys, calm down. They’re doing a better job than most network providers*cough*Microsoft*cough*
I mean, on page one somebody complained about an error and Matthew addressed it immediately and actually did something to fix it.

  • Saying you can’t give us any more details at this time leaves one to think that yall sit around smoking crack for 13 hours… I mean C’Mon… is it a security update? And there’s a few issues why yall still chasing your tail trying to get rid of ppl running jailbroken PS3s… maybe you could stop offering the firmware updates to downloaded off the internet onto a PC? lol… get any decent software engineer and they can EASILY crack it… or… maybe… just maybe you WANT people to jailbreak their PS3s so yall can milk more overtime from sony with all these UNNECESSARY updates… have fun hiutting the crackpipe… better you than me…

  • As a wild guess, Im sure its not the much needed security additions for consoles when using the installed browser? But you guys could always surprise me and make me eat crow… it would be a dish well worth eating if that was the case!!!

I know you guys do your best but lets face it, even linux.org and kernel.org got hacked last year so its safe to say that no OS is safe any longer… they even had ACTUAL malware runngin for over a week bwefore it was discovered!!! And they say Linux dont have any virus’… HA!

  • A heads up is good. I’d complain since it’s one day before the actual maintenance/down time, but it’s a Monday. I’d be more annoyed if it was a Friday or near the weekend. I’m sure I can find something else to do tomorrow.

  • Maybe this is a good time to pack up my PS3 and trade it in on the Star Wars 360! I can truly understand 2 to 4 hrs but 13hrs or more come on! How about at Midnight to say noon on Monday, oh and by the way some of us work weekends, my off days happen to be Sunday & Monday… There goes my COD MW3 Monday! Wish we could get some explanation? Last time it was down this long nothing changed, come on Sony get your act together with the Online Community!

  • People always complaining, do what you need to Sony. It seems I am the only hardcore gamer that actually has a life outside gaming. Keep up the good work!

  • Taking psn offline occasionally is fine but without atleast a general explanation is not. For future posts about maintenance please give us atleast a general idea of what is being done even if its vague.

I would like to see some of the old stuff updated like the video chat and youtube. Add more room for more people to chat and make it to where ps3 and vita players can cross system. I agree that the adobe flash needs and upgrade or atleast add an app that is tailored to the ps3.

One more thing, Can you discuss about possibly adding support for mods that can in games like skyrim?

  • Welcome Matthew, I really hope you could try to push the community ideas into the PS ecosystem, as a start you should pay a visit to the PS Blog Share section and see which of those ideas could be implemented, you know Sony for me it’s the best company, I can see the value in the PS brand, for example, the free PS network, game diversity, hardware quality, backward compatibility and a lot of etc..,

But I think that there’s a lot of potential untapped on our systems, if you could develop a lot of the request the community is asking for, Youtube app, better flash support, more codecs support, etc.. You will make the PS systems just irresistible, you know once proud owners of PS show their friends all the features our systems have, they will have little to resist buying one.

You would sell a lot more systems, have a huge and loyal gamer base, and of course increased revenue..
    Just my 2cts

Thank you, and please keep it up!

    Chris.

  • Thanks for the heads up. Thank you for trying to improve our gaming experience. I don’t care if you stay down for a month if you could just get all these jail broken cheaters out of my beloved Socom. : ) Cheaters suck.

  • Well at least they are letting us know in advance that its going down for service maintence instead of us worry what happened.

  • Can someone please tell me what these maintenance’s CAN do?

  • ohw well
maintenance again! OMG! I cant play mw3 for 13 hrs

well thank you guys for informing us.

  • “Our mission is to keep you better informed about everything that is going on in the wide world of the PlayStation Network”

Why is there nothing about this on the EU blog then? if it was not for mw3 posting they were rescheduling the clan ops would be none the wiser

  • “I’m here today to let you know that we will be performing routine scheduled maintenance on the network on Monday, April 16th, starting at approximately 6:00 am PDT / 9:00 am EDT. This maintenance will last roughly 13 hours, concluding around 7:00pm PDT / 10:00 pm EDT”

Alright so i’m confused because I live in a central time zone (U.S) and the playstation store has been down since 5 p.m on the 15th not the 16th soo how exactly does this work? I’m not trying to complain i’m all for a “scheduled” maintenance that we don’t become aware of until the day before but, if it’s scheduled for the 16th shouldn’t we still have access untill then or am I just “out of luck”? Anyone else having the same issue?

  • I am glad to see sony making steps to focus on customer service, this could really bring back my loyalty and trust in sony. I want to see Sony care about those who are loyal to them that way we don’t feel sony is cheating us, and it looks like our voices are starting to be heard. I know we aren’t quite were everyone wants sony to be yet, however this gives me confidence that it will be like that again. Thanks for starting to listen again

    :)

  • The fact that you have to take the entire PSN down for any reason whatsoever is a testament to Sony’s poor IT skills.

Do Google, Amazon, eBay, Yahoo, etc. ever go completely down?

Of course not. They have clueful people designing their systems, people who understand high availability concepts, scaling, clustering, redundancy, global server load-balancing, networking, etc. And yet, they do maintenance all the time. They can do maintenance in the middle of their respective peak periods because they know how to design applications, databases, networks, and other ancillary support services which are redundant in nature and which don’t have single points of failure.

It’s such a shame that Sony has the best gaming console available, but such a poor, brittle, non-scalable, non-redundant, insecure network back-end. Really embarrassing in the 21st Century.

And no matter what PR-speak mumbo-jumbo spin you try to put on how Sony are working to ‘improve the PSN experience’ or whatever rationale you try to use to justify this nonsense, those of us who understand technology know the truth – that the Sony PSN is poorly designed and is run by incompetent people.

  • @medaforb
I am able to access psn and the store so I do not thing that it is sony that is causing your issues since I am having no issues at all. Im on pacific time and just checked it again.

  • @disambiguated
Also remember that those sites do not have people who are constantly trying to find exploits in their systems, maybe if there weren’t so many people exploiting and hacking the sony systems we wouldn’t be getting so much maintenence. This maintenence increased when the hacking got very bad, and people are already exploiting the vita so I do not blame sony so much due to the hackers, this would also explain why sony keeps us in the dark. Remember right now there is a struggle going on between sony and the hackers so if you really have an issue go and take it to those that are hacking sony equipment and are ruining the experience for all of us, OR go get an xbox360. If you are unhappy with sony’s services than go elsewhere, or stop complaining about it.

    @sony
Btw I had a suggestion that you could take to your higher ups, talk about making it possible to remove accounts from systems more than just once, even if it requires a certain security such as password, address, and last purchase etc, that way we can reset our accts if we lose a system of if someone hacks our accounts and we lose one of the uses it would be very appreciated thanks

  • Hello Matthew Harper, Umm idk if you can do this but can you make it so users can talk to eachother like xbox they have a party cause that would be freakin awesome to add to the ps3 so do you think you can do that?

  • Will the Events on Call Of Duty Elite be rescheduled

  • Too many cry babies on here. Go out and have a real life with real friends and breath that semi-fresh air.
