A FES-tivus for the rest of us: Persona 3 FES Hits PSN Tomorrow

PlayStation.Blog readers,

There’s a new PlayStation 2 Classic coming to PlayStation Network. I want to talk to you about it. Instead of just getting to the darn point, though…LET’S DRAG THIS OUT.

Join me, won’t you, as we take a trip back in time? Step into this police box with me, please. Get the door behind you? Thanks.

Ok, the year is 2008. You just saw Al Pacino’s 88 Minutes in theaters. It was terrible.

You’re on your way home, your head hung low in abject disappointment, when you pass by your local INSERT NAME OF YOUR FAVORITE VIDEO GAME RETAILER HERE. What’s that? New releases? You wander in to take a closer look, thinking that a new game might help cleanse your mental palate…

Persona 3 FES for PSN

Whoa. Wait, didn’t Persona 3 come out in 2007? Sure, it was one of the best RPGs you ever played, introducing one of the most memorable casts of characters ever and a ridiculously sweet half-dungeon RPG/half-social sim gameplay mechanic that let you balance the everyday demands of a high school student with the every night demands of a world-saving, Persona-wielding badass.

And then there was FES. It took the original game, which was now known as “The Journey,” and added: a new Hard Mode selectable from the start, new Personas, a new Social Link with new Arcana, new classroom pop quizzes, a new Weapon Fusion system, over 50 new requests from Elizabeth, new nighttime events with Koromaru, and a few secrets as well.

But FES also offered “The Answer,” an entirely new chapter that dealt with the events after The Journey’s ending. In The Answer, players control Aigis as she works to solve the mystery of “time skips” that have trapped the S.E.E.S. members in the same repeating day. The Answer gives players who have completed the Journey a formidable challenge: conquer hundreds of new floors filled with enemies and bosses harder than anything in The Journey’s Hard Mode, and do it all without the benefit of The Journey’s Persona compendium.

Persona 3 is widely considered one of the finest JRPGs ever made. Persona 3 FES takes all of that even further. It has an 89 on Metacritic, getting perfect scores from sites like Destructoid.com, who raved: “Persona 3: FES manages to take one of last year’s best RPGs and make it even better, trumping the original with loads of gameplay and fantastic value.”

Anyways, we’re back in 2012 now. Please get out of my time machine. No, seriously, I’m tired of having to watch you out of the corner of my eye. Second of all, and perhaps more importantly, Persona 3 FES is available tomorrow as a PS2 classic via PSN.

Own a PS3? Always wanted to play Persona 3 FES and never got around to it. NOW YOU CAN!

Well, it’s been fun. I’m off to 1999. I go back to it a lot. I sit outside of big movie theaters and watch peoples’ reactions as they shuffle out of Phantom Menace. Schadenfreude is an addicting thing.

Until next time!!

  • Persona 3 is a no brainer… man I love this game. But what about the PS1 classics :) ?

  • consider it bought from me. I loved Persona 3 Portable and the 1st one that also came out on PSP. I may have gotten into the series late but I love it now.

also, may be you guys could give us some Persona avatars and also maybe put out Persona 4 on PS2 classics at some point.

  • Bringing PE3: FES as a PS2 Classic was a wonderful move from ATLUS. I’m a big fan of Persona 2 and never had the chance to play Persona 3 or 4, until now. I’m also planning to get P3 Portable as well and I really hope to see more of the Shin Megami TEnsei series revitalized as PS2 classics, so people like me can finally get a taste of those awesome games! Thank you guys =D

  • Haha awesome. Glad to hear it! Thanks for the replies Aram.

  • @foggy-daze21

There is a remake of Persona 4 coming to the vita, “Persona 4 The Golden”. A new character and expanded story.

  • I still have this (and need to finish this) on the PS2. Heck, I don’t think I’ve even opened my copy of Persona 4.

Cool to see it up on the PSN. Only way I’d buy it again though is if PS2 games started getting trophy support, hahaha.

  • Any chance Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land or Arcana Heart will get a PS2 Classic release?

    • Taylor_With_Hat,

Unfortunately, short of anything that’s been publicly confirmed, there is no certainty when it comes to downloadable re-releases. In many cases, the passage of time and licensing limitations can make certain releases less likely.

Crossing your fingers never hurts… Unless of course someone then slaps or punches your hands, which would probably hurt a lot since your fingers would be unnaturally overlapping.

  • Man, Atlus always delivers. I can’t wait to pick this up tomorrow…even if i can’t play until friday when I finish up exams for the week.

I’ve been wanting to replay P3 for a while now and getting it on my PS3 makes it a no brainer.

Keep up the great work, and hopefully we will see P4 as a classic in the near future (PLEASE).

  • Are you saying that those two particular titles are unlikely to appear, based off the information you currently posses?

  • :(

  • I’ve bought every release of Persona 3 already and played them all to death. I was personally holding out hope for Atlus Japan to put together a HD Collection of P3/P4, hopefully with all the features of the portable versions. But there’s no way I’m NOT supporting Atlus USA putting P3 on the PSN. This game, like, changed my life. So hello Persona 3. We meet again, for the 4th time.

  • It would be awesome if this version got the Japanese dub :(
is this version going to be 480i or 480p?
    Thanks

  • Guess P4 isn’t too far off hopefully!

  • Holy fudge!! I can´t believe it!! Just three days ago I was telling my girlfriend how much I missed playing Persona 3 and how cool it would be to see it land in the Ps Store. I can barely believe my eyes when I finished reading this article!!

Thanx a lot. Now bring Silent Hill 2 and 3 but the Ps2 originals please.

  • ..And I was just playing this two days ago on my very old and very used PS2… Still, I’ll be buying this as soon as I get my hands on a PSN card (since I don’t have a credit card) :D

Anyway….This game was pretty hard for me to find on the PS2 and, like P4, I still enjoy playing it back even after I’ve finished the game. Now, here’s to hoping we’d get P4: The Golden so that I we can have Persona 1-4 on-the-go.

BTW, ATLUS really is the best. And I always enjoy reading your posts, Aram! More power to you guys! And, also, thanks for giving us the Persona series! :)

  • Buying for sure. Any news on the Golden getting localized?

  • Hey aram
just wanted to know, since I heard about Persona 4 The Golden releasing for Jap on Vita, and every persona game releases for us that I hear of, I’m sure it’s coming so I wanted to Download Persona 3 Portable but it’s $20 now, and now this is 10 on the PS3.. I would prefer it on the go (I like RPG’s on portables better,so you can continue any time) so I’d pay any price of the 2 but I really want to know.
What is the differences from Persona 3: Fes and Persona 3: Portable? Like what was taken out of portable and what was added type of thing. Thank you :)

  • Any chance of a discount for people who can prove we bought P3 at launch? :D

  • I’m going to buy PS Vita only when ATLUS release P4 Golden her to US

  • I wish one day to be able to play awesome PS2 classics on my Vita. :)

  • OMG it’s finally coming! One of my favorite RPGs ever is coming to PSN! SHIN MEGAMI TENSEY & ATLUS FTW!!

P.S.: I hope we’ll get physical release of PERSONA 2 Eternal Punishment for PSP in US/Canada this year as well!

  • Heartless_Angel7

Let there be Persona 4 on PS2 Classics. Also port the Persona 4 the Golden on the PS3. I will definitely buy them both. Remember back in the day got to obsessed with P4 and didn’t notice that I have finished it 5 times in a row.

  • I love Persona 3. This is amazing! Also I love the Doctor Who reference ;)

  • This is Great I love talus ^_^… I’ve purchased persona 1, person 2, persona 3, persona 3 fes, persona 4, over the years love the series… And I’ve also purchased persona portable, persona 2 portable, and persona 3 portable…

Now it’s time to purchase person 3 fes as a ps3 classic ^_^ I can never get enough persona… And $10 for this game is a deal…. It would also be kool is one day persona 3 fes and persona 3 portable could be bundled in a deal (someday for newcomers)

hope to see persona 4 on the psn and hope to see it on my psvita with persona 4 golden ^_^ can’t wait

  • Atlus* lol sorry I’m replying through my iPad auto correct

  • are we gonna be able to download it at midnight? The anticipated is killing me!

  • Sorry, I meant to say “The anticipation is killing me”

  • I just need this more than I have ever needed a game in all of my life and I am just going to keep checking back at the store every five minutes like a good Persona gamer I am. ):

  • Nice to see some RPG’s on the PS2 being put out on the PS Store.

PLEASE, add Dark Cloud 1&2 to this list…

  • I saw the announcement for this on Sunday night and have been jumping for joy since then. Since playing FES in 2009, I’ve gone on to buy every other Persona game. It’s such a fantastic series with memorable characters.

Even though I’d much prefer having a PS3 version of P3P with its augmented battle system and widescreen display, the original FES is amazing. It has in-game graphics that P3P lacks, as well as in-game animated cutscenes and the Answer storyline.

If you guys were ever to release a Yukari PSN avatar, I’d buy it right up. Just sayin’.

  • Is it coming on PSN EU too? or it will be next week? thanks

  • To chime in to the “merely days ago” waxes ‘nostalgic’, it was only a couple days ago that I was telling my to-be bro-in-law about how Final Fantasy draws names from all kinds of mythologies, but that Persona [3 [FES]] had a catalog with rundowns of each figure’s mythoses…es. And then I saw The Drop.

However, I’m in the same boat as chemerie (#47): Only partway through (only a couple personas have “beefed up”, in a sense), and I’d really like to not have to start over (which would mean several tens of smaller start-overs), so do save files from PS2 memory cards work with PS2 Classics? (I guess I could test out a PS1 game I have on disc and download, and assume that’d be indicative.)

  • ( = {{WALL-O-TEXT INCOMING }} )

But, yeah, got P3FES from the GameStop a college friend worked at, then got a very nice used copy of the P3 set (and have had “Master of Shadow” in my playlists since), then pre-ordered P4 on Amazon (though I didn’t get in on that complementary swag set, which is about as perused as the included, and large, artbook), and from the same site have picked up the box sets of P1 and P2IS (WHERE did I put P1’s box?!); love having the track names and such, though still gotta get in touch with SquareEnixMusic.com about a typo. Held off on P3P (I’m a bucket hat kinda guy), but intend to gender-bend if I ever get through FES.

But for requests, yes, avatars! Oh, and could you guys host a page on your site with album art for the CDs you’ve released with the games? Especially the ones that don’t have proper covers, like P3, P4(1), and Catherine? PURDY PLURSE!! I can do without P4 on PS2Cs is P4G is “everything and more”, unlike the heart-wrenching compromises twixt P3/F and P3P.

  • why they didn’t release the PSP port ? its better then the PS2 version
    and what about P4 ?
they are re-releasing it on PS vita..they also should ported to PS3 as will
and i don’t care about that fighting game wanna be

  • HELL YEAH!
The Persona games are some of my all time favorites.
BTW is it too much to ask for some Persona related avatars?
As much as I love MGS I rather show of my all time favorite franchise.
Maybe have a few other SMT related stuff like Nocturne but for now P3/4 is all I’m asking for.

  • Will there be an European release for this? Just finished Innocent Sin on PSP, want to play this one on PS3 badly.

  • I will almost certainly buy this, if just for the reason that it will support the series and potentially make Persona 4 a PS2 Classic. Also, I /really/ want to get P4G for the Vita I’m picking up later today.

  • Hey, would you guys recommend me getting P3F for my PS3, or a non-UMD copy of P3P for my Vita?

    • Orohu,

I think it’ll really depend on whether you’d rather play more on the go or sitting at home. P3P, being a handheld remaster, does streamline some of the presentation elements of the original PS2 game, but it does also offer flexibility for what is ultimately a 60+ hour RPG!

Do you prefer the couch, or the car/plane/bus/train/toilet seat?

  • I LOVE YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!! I am buying it today after I get off work!! Get some Persona 3/ 4 avatars!! I hope it has trophies!! In fact I might just buy a Playstation Plus membership since I’m in a good mood! -fan girl squeal- !!!! ♥♥ ^.~

  • I still have my PS2 version, would’ve been a sale for me if it was an HD release with trophies and all… remember that for Persona 4, I still have the disc version of that game too.

  • Oh so you mean that finally, after the 4th release of the same game that you finally added dual audio? I didn’t think so….Listen to your fans, don’t be arrogant like Square-Enix. When Atlus published Disgaea, they added Dual Audio, you had to reprint the game you sold so many copies. (No-Brainer) You will sell significantly more of a game if it has dual audio, covering any cost there may be. Dual Audio sells, and it’s what EVERYONE wants for JRPG’s. Video games are ART, and ART should be preserved in it’s entirety.

On a side note, I hate the Persona games, I have tried playing all of them, and I can’t see what anyone see’s in them.

ME3 Resurgence pack for free is this week for me.

  • @ Orohu: I’d recommend playing both. FES continues were P3P ends anyway, so I’d suggest playing the main story for the male MC on the PS3 and for the femMC on your handheld and then continue with “The Answer” on your PS3.

P3P adds a female MC but also cuts out the running through the town, which is replaced by still images of the scenes on which you can move the cursor to select interactable items/persons. The dungeons are still 3D maps you can run around in just like in the PS2 version. I’ve gotta admit that I like the new point & click system in P3P, since it saves you a lot of time. <3

I was playing the game in this order – played the PS2 version twice, I chose the bad end first and started over with a new game+ and played through the game again, but this time going for the normal ending, then I got me a save game for the PSP version, so that I could start a new game+ with the femMC, played through the game again and then went back to the PS2 version to play "The Answer"! 8)

  • Oh and I’d really like P4 The Golden. I hope you guys will announce this rather sooner than later, since the suspense is killing me. 8) I never finished P4, since my son thought it would be a great idea to format my memory card with my save game right in front of the final dungeon. I couldn’t bring myself to replay the game ever since, but lately I’m craving for it again. Sadly my PS2 is gone forever by now and playing via emulator on PC is no fun, so… when P4TG got announced in Japan I was super hyped and have been hoping for Atlus US to announce it ever since.

    But knowing you guys, you’ll surely bring the game over at some point and you’ll probably tease us fans a lot before finally announcing it. Oh well, bring it on. I’m definitely prepared for your teases. Probably. ;_;

Do you also plan on making Hexyz Force availble from the PS Vita store at some point? (I’d guess this is more of a thing that Sony themselves have to handle, but they probably listen better to a publisher than to users) It’s quite disappointing that there is no way of playing it on the Vita unless you have a PS3, which I don’t. This obviously goes for all of your PSP titles, should others not be on the Vita’s store as well.

  • Downloading now. Thanks Atlus. Thanks Sony. etc.

At this point I feel like I just might as well own every release of the game, as I have previously.

  • when the European release ?

  • I’ve already got P3FES for my PS2 still, and I just bought P3P a few weeks ago, but I will still probably be picking this up. My MegaTen obsession knows no bounds.

  • When will it be out exactly?
I checked the psn store and it is not there.
Will it come out in the evening

  • I was secretly hoping that you guys were announcing a Persona X Seinfeld crossover game because of the title of this article.

  • Just the fact that more PS2 titles are making their way to the PS Store is definitely a positive thing! i think most everyone can agree that we as loyal Playstation fans would certainly enjoy more PS2 titles as well as them making their way to the PS Store more frequently. I have yet to purchase any of these titles as these just aren’t games i’m interested in. Thanks for the hard work and keep em comin!!
