Way of the Samurai 4 Coming Exclusively to PS3

Way of the Samurai 4 for PS3

Say WotS?! You heard me right! Spike and Acquire’s Way of the Samurai 4 is confirmed for release in North America on the PS3, and we at XSEED Games are pleased to be bringing it to you fully uncut and uncensored. Torture chambers, naughty midnight missions in the dark and all the brutal slaughtering you can handle await in this riveting and 100% historically accurate (shhhh!) sandbox-style samurai period drama.

Admiral Perry has just opened Japan’s borders to the British, allowing for a long-overdue globalization process to begin. Unfortunately, one of the open ports happens to be a modest Japanese burg called Amihama, where a resistance group known as the “Disciples of Prajna” have taken up arms against the arriving foreigners and all who support them.

As a lone samurai who’s just arrived amidst the chaos, it’s up to you whether you want to join forces with the Prajna resistance, fight alongside the foreigners in the name of progress or take your stance somewhere between the two by supporting the local government’s attempts to quell the violence (through any means possible).

…Or you could just hit on all the local women, deck out your samurai in wildly anachronistic (and highly customizable) gear, murder and deceive your way into positions of power, learn English and schmooze with the foreigners, or while away your time in the Eastern-style gambling den or Western-style casino.

Way of the Samurai 4 for PS3

You have complete freedom to play the game however you wish, and the possibilities are certain to defy your expectations — often in a nearly surrealistic manner!

For the man who’s always looking to thrust his sword into something new and different, Way of the Samurai 4 delivers. Never the same game twice, this is historic fiction at its best. Viva la WotS! Banzai!

(Oh, and we don’t have a release date or pricing info for you just yet, but we will soon. Stay tuned!)

  • oh miss that sorry and thanks telling me ! YYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

  • I’m fine with it being a digital download. I just want it to have the original audio track. I feel as if this is not too much to ask for.

  • @101 (lisatsunami) Haha, totally agree. I even use the XMB eject control because I’m too lazy to hit the eject button when I have to swap a disc (guilty revelations).

  • Honestly DD doesn’t bother me as long as the price point takes that into account. I upgraded my internal HD to a 500 Gig a while back and am showing no sign of running out of space yet.

the only thing that would annoy me is if its like 60$ for a digital release. Imo if there’s no physical release that should cut the final price way down into the 30-40$ range simply because you don’t own it, its more like extended rental :)

other than that, I will definitely be keeping an eye out for more information one this since I loved the other games in the series, anything that can keep me entertained for over 100 hours of customization and multiple endings is a worthy buy at any reasonable price.

  • Thanks, Tom! You are awesome. :)

  • Oh, another question, given SCEA requires games to be fully dubbed last I checked (could not apply to digital release though), hows the dub going to work? You alreddy mentioned it will be have the Japanese track.

Will it be like 2’s badly acted imitation of a badly acted samurai film dub? A Xenoblade/TLS style British dub (given all the english speakers are British…)? An American dub with standard acting?

  • From what I remember the last game looked better. Never played it yet, sadly. But this one isn’t looking good to me so far.

    • It’s very different. The last game was a bit more serious and VERY Japanese. This game… well, it focuses on a time in Japan’s history when the country’s borders had just opened up for the first time, so this game is loaded with snooty foreigner stereotypes and over-the-top culture shock silliness, complemented by a surprisingly poignant (at times, anyway) story about the politics of race, class and internationalization in a society that had previously always been isolated and xenophobic. It’s a really fascinating setting, and in any Way of the Samurai title, the setting makes the game.

The amount of interest in this is astounding! I always felt like I was the only Way of the Samurai fan in the West. Hooray for niche interests in video games!

  • Hello!

What happend about Grand Knights History PSP game.

    Please let me know!

    • We’re currently in a holding pattern as we wait for word from the Japanese developers, so I’m afraid there’s no news at this point. Sorry!

  • Looks good, will be nice to see a Video and get pricing.

DD isn’t an issue for me. Just fitted a 750GB HDD last week, so I’m good to go.

Will be keeping an eye on this.

  • No physical release? I’ll pass, XSEED your my favorite publisher, but if all your future titles on PS3 and Vita are digital only; I am DONE supporting you.

  • Great, great news! I understand your company’s situation, so your implied reason for the PSN-only release is perfectly fine by me. I will buy this game, even though I would have loved to have it on a disc.

I bought WotS3, and it was wonderful, but it felt too much like if I was playing WotS2 with PS2-type graphics and animation. Of course, ACQUIRE Corp. are the ones I’m referring to. But this game looks BEAUTIFUL! Excellent work on the visuals, ACQUIRE Corp!

The customisation craziness and freedom always impressed me, and the gameplay is solid in the series, so I have no doubt that this is a great title.

  • Way to go tom.. I think you earned your develper stripes on the blog.. only few have done it with class,.. Alot of us give you props.. Im picking this up becuase it ps3 exclusive and you really stood yoiur ground and was very honest.. also i have watched the anime way of samurai before.. Also in order to get these eastern gmes here we really need to support them..

I think if more devs had the attitude you have of being honest with the fans of the franchise the gaming world would be a better place just like 70-80’s early 90 era of gaming.. Now it kinda shady.. Me and many other commend you..

    Agn way to go tom….

  • Now, I haven’t played the first three Way of the Samurai games but I think this one might be good. Is it going to have a backstory telling the events of the first three Way of the Samurai games, or do I have to play them to get the whole storyline?

    • Don’t worry, this is a completely standalone game. No prior knowledge of the series is required whatsoever.

  • Baron_Von_Bonbon

@gameman15, Each Way of the Samurai has its own unique story set in a distinct time period. There isn’t any interconnected story between games. So you can play 4 and enjoy it.

  • For people who are complaining about this game being digital. It is because of the exclusive Japanese audio that XSEED can only release the game as a digital download. A little insight from the people at Koei is that Sony only allows games with an English audio option to be disc releases. That would be my guess as to why at least. Either way, I don’t mind. I would rather have any release than no release. Good luck guys.

  • I’ve got a question from the GameFaqs community that also interests me, hope you’ll please answer :S

Will the WoTS4 version we’ll be getting be the “Plus” version, or will we have to buy/download DLC seperately?

And if we aren’t getting the “Plus” version, will we get DLC at all?

  • YYYEEEEEEEESSSSSS!!! This news has just made my freakin day… Huge fan of the Way of The Samurai series.Day one buy for me, cant wait.

  • I’ve only heard of this series in passing and never really looked into it before. But WotS4 seems to have caught my attention. XSEED, if you can get this priced reasonably (40-50 bucks), I’ll definitely pick it up. I’m having a blast with Warriors Orochi 3 right now, and it looks like WotS4 can pick up right where WO3 leaves off, whenever I finish it.

And I have to ask, Tom, since you’ve mentioned it a few times in your earlier responses. Am I to understand that XSEED is indeed planning to release/working on Trails in the Sky 2+3? I don’t expect a release date or anything, but just knowing that you are going to release them makes me happy. And hopefully they’ll be Vita-compatible as well, so I can put them right next to TotS1. :D
    Keep being awesome, guys!

  • No disc = no buy from me…

I don’t really mind digital only for handheld, but for console i like to have my disc.

Another reason too is a like to keep every game i buy no question of selling a game after i’m done with it or erase a game from my hardrive to have space for another game.

I hope with the next generation switching between hardrive will be as easy as switching memory card like with handheld then maybe it won’t bother me as much to download game.

  • @ 116. You know that all PS3 HDD are interchangeable right? You can backup to an external USB drive, then copy the entire contents of your PS3 to a new PS3 HDD. Its $50 – $100 for like 500 gigs of space, with a faster spindle speed even (7200/ 10, 000 rpm or higher). You’ll never have to erase a game again and you can change games on the fly.

The installation is a breeze on the new models too. Literally one screw and a pull out HDD tray. Takes 2 minutes.

For me the convenience of not having to swap discs (because I’m anal retentive about dusting them with air, etc) far outweighs the need to have a physical copy. If I could, I’d have all my games on HDD. Not to mention most retailers are terrible with shipping niche titles. I live in a major city, and all my NISA or Atlus stuff gets delayed by like a week. Doesn’t matter who – Gamestop, Amazon – I order from.

  • Never played any in the series, but since it’s XSeed I’ll most likely pick it up.

  • I am happy that Xseed is bringing titles such as this and I hope you keep doing it and I always support guys like you who bring titles from Japan but I am sorry that I am not going to support you for this one. I always love my physical copies because I love to collect things and I also have a slow connection downloading big games such as this one will take day/s for me. Anyway, since I have choice. I’ll go for the Physical copy.

  • @121 “You know that all PS3 HDD are interchangeable right? You can backup to an external USB drive, then copy the entire contents of your PS3 to a new PS3 HDD.”

If you have a physical copy, you don’t *need* a back up.

  • xseed do you guys plan on, or could you bring akiba’s trip over, i loved playing it in japanese for a while but i want to playthrough and actually get the story in english and im pretty sure all of the wots fans would love it too

  • @123 Wow, thank you for yet another stunning insight.

He said: “Another reason too is a like to keep every game i buy no question of selling a game after i’m done with it or erase a game from my hardrive to have space for another game.”

My comment was a response to his complaint about not having HDD space, to which I offered an easy solution. Btw, if you loose/ damage your oh so sacred ‘physical copy’, or it’s stolen, the PS3 fairy doesn’t place a new one under your pillow at night. With DD its as simple as going to the PSN/ Steam/ whatever service and downloading again.

Discs are not here to stay, in fact, they’re rapidly loosing any sort of foothold outside of server and office based functions. Enjoy your disc based games, they won’t be around in 5 years and they certainly won’t be supported in the genre that you – assumedly – enjoy. You’re like that cantankerous old grandfather who just can’t fathom how to use the “intrawebs”. I don’t loathe discs with the same vigour that you seem to despise DD. I’m gamer, I like the games. The format should be irrelevant in the grand scheme of things (and please spare us your tin-foil hat theories about publishers and the used-game market).

  • I really don’t know much about this game, but I’m curious to see more.

Can you clarify the voice acting again? It would be nice to have the various characters speaking their native languages (a la Tekken).

Thanks for all the info up until now. Admittedly, I don’t really have a handle on the sorts of gameplay, storytelling, etc. in this title as yet. The trailers I’ve found are all weirdly Japanese. However, a more “straightforward” adventure in historic Japan would be a welcome change from the Dynasty Warriors; Ninja Gaiden-type over the top experiences that seem ubiquitous.

  • Also, once you buy from PSN, you can always download again if you delete the game, or your drive gets corrupted. (Well, for as long as PSN remains in operation). You’re not going to ‘lose it’.

  • Hi Xseed, So i see that Wots 4 is going to be a PSN DD only huh? that is disapointing but i understand it now that you explained why there is no hard copy and am happy just to be getting the game over here at last. So thank you. Iv plaied every one of the wots games up till now and cant wait for this one. also being a real samurai my self its a fun and funny way to mess around with stuff you can really do :P so again thank you.

  • Tom if you are still posting in here, can you shed any light at all on Ragnarok Odyssey? As you can tell it has a ton of support from XSEED forums, huge topic over 100 pages and over 1000 posts. Can you comment on anything other than “we are looking into this” That’s the response I got when I emailed XSEED about a month ago.

    Thanks

  • Im gonna have to go pick uo the WotS 3 that I saw yesterday (new of course). I wanna see if I like the gameplay before I decide on this one. Looks good so far and I like the style Yakuza has so maybe this is close to it?

  • Man I am excited. I bought WoTS 3 on a whim, and fell in love with the game/series. Thanks for bringing WoTS 4 to my PS3. I hope we get an idea of when it will be available. I don’t want to wait till the holidays!!!!

  • AsianInvasian603

Thank You Guys VERY VERY VERY much for bringing this game to North America!!!!!! :D Hopefully there will be more Japanese imports in the future? because I don’t mind it being digital download I just love the games

  • Thanks for bringing this game to the west. i really appreciate it. ive been waiting for this for almost i get to the point that i lost my hope but you guys did it. Even though there is no physical release im still getting this game although i prefer the disc game

  • I’d honestly never heard of this series until this announcement, but based off what I’ve read, it sounds like a game that I would very greatly enjoy. I look forward to hearing more about this in the future. I’ll most likely be buying this game when it releases anyway. ;)

  • mr tom i just found out about this wonderfull news today. i had lost faith in a us release so having it as a digital release is just as good i cant begin to thank xseed enougth for the release. i have all the titles from the way of the samurai series iand i even imported the japanese version but i will gladly buy this again and again if necessary its the best of all the series. once again thanks xseed you just made my year ill be looking foward to when this title is available
