The Ratchet & Clank Collection Going 1080p on PS3, Multiplayer Included

It’s amazing that it’s been almost 10 years since the release of the original Ratchet & Clank on PlayStation 2. A lot has changed since 2002, but your loyalty to our furry Lombax and his faithful robot companion has endured. As we reach the 10th Anniversary of Ratchet & Clank, we wanted to commemorate the achievements of the Ratchet & Clank saga.

Today, we’re delighted to announce the Ratchet & Clank 10th Anniversary Celebration, which also simultaneously addresses the biggest current request from our fans: The Ratchet & Clank Collection. This will contain Ratchet & Clank, Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando, and Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal – all remastered by Idol Minds, working closely with our team at Insomniac Games. In addition to a full 1080p HD remaster (720p stereoscopic 3D support) of all three games and the inclusion of three Platinum Trophies, we’re happy to confirm that the online competitive multiplayer from Up Your Arsenal will be included. Now you can check out the acclaimed multiplayer mode that many of you didn’t get to experience the first time on PS2.

The collection will release this fall in North America. I know it’s a little bit later than the Spring European release, but it’s because we have something very special planned for our North American fans to celebrate the 10th anniversary, and we’ll share all the details very soon.

We’re so excited that PlayStation has worked to give our original Ratchet & Clank PS2 adventures the HD remaster treatment they deserve. Stay tuned in the coming months for more on the Ratchet & Clank 10th Anniversary Celebration, as well as more details, screenshots and footage as we near the release of the Ratchet & Clank Collection.

All PS3 games are region free.

Want the game early? Import from SCEE.
Want whatever the extra content is? Import from SCEA.

Only importing from Japan/Asia is prohibitively expensive nowadays.

Judging by the screenshots, it’s at least native 720p with 2xMSAA so it’s already passed the minimum image quality I’d expect from an HD remaster.

This is awesome news! Can’t wait to play those games for the thousandth time, but now in HD. The inclusion of UYA multiplayer is a welcome surprise. Without a doubt, one of the best multiplayer experiences I’ve ever had in all my time spent gaming. So many great memories with awesome players.

BEST NEWS EVER! ! !:P Can’t wait to play them again. I don’t normally buy HD updates if i have played them already on the PS2 but i loved the R&C PS2 games;)

+ Any ‘NEW’ PS3 R&C games coming in the future to? ? ? Yep i can’t get enough of them:D

+ Shame SONY didn’t own the ‘TimeSplitters’ games because a HD update of those games would be awesome:P Oh well.

Is there any chance for a Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction trophy patch now?? As part of the 10th Anniversary Celebration??

I mean, with this collection it will be the only main series game not to feature trophies! I love that game and wouldn’t mind doind 100% all over again to have the platinum! IG and Idol Minds, please consider it, I’m sure it will mean a lot to fans like me!!

Already preordered Ratchet and clank is my favourite series ever.

Ted, can you confirm if Ratchet and Clank (1) will have a strafing option this time? I think it would greatly improve the combat mechanics even if you included it as an option.

I caught my daughter playing the first game when she was just over 2. She is now going to be 10 and still throws in deadlocked to play with her 4 year old brother. I played the first 3 and the first one on ps3. As well as size matters. The kids and I LOOOOVE this series.

btw, after all this from Insomniac, Ready At dawn & Bluepoint how can the scumbags over at cRapcom getaway with calling their lame no-plat-rush-cash-grabs HD remasters?

cRapcom are $h**ing all over the HD remaster idea, which can brings down the true remasters through simple association. Sony, you should have a second tier title for lame HD remasters – something like “Half Done rehash” so gamers can tell them apart.

I am a huge Ratchet and Clank fan ever since day one of the PS2 release. Actually I think there was a demo for R&C before the release for PS2 that sold me on it.

Even though I have all the ratchet and clank games for PS2, PSP and PS3, I will buy this for sure for the extras that it will surely have and the updated presentation. The HD collections I have so far have all been awesome.

There are plenty of other great PS2 games that could use an HD Collection too, so keep them coming!

@54 The Jak Collection isn’t even full 720p (960×720 I believe), has no anti-aliasing, it’s missing graphics/effects and the claustrophobic widescreen vertical FoV wasn’t improved which is one of the easiest fixes to make for the gameplay camera. Mass Media may have had the most difficult task delving into Naughty Dog’s unusual tools/code/engine but once SCEA made the choice to remaster the games, they should have supported Mass Media with the time and any extra technical resources they needed to match the image quality and faithfulness (of the bits you WANT kept) of previous SCE remasters.

If you’ve never played the games, maybe you’ll get more enjoyment from the “HD remaster” but if I’m rebuying a game as an HD remaster, I expect all the game intact (including the sun!) and a minimum good level of image quality.

  We and Idol Minds are doing our best to learn from those things. Keep in mind though, sometimes this stuff (ie FOV/Camera) and the way they were set up on the PS2 games, makes them difficult to adjust. As a global system and game-wide thing, tweaking/adjusting can cause tons of problems. And with both Ratchet and Jak, Naughty Dog and us were wrenching every little bit of power out of the PS3, so there were lots of “cheats” and “hacks” put in that now cause problems when you try and change certain systems too much.
  
  Anyways, just saying. When working on this, everyone is doing there best, and things that seem “small” or like something you’d “tweak” on a PC game, have far-reaching effects in a game built for one console under tight deadlines

@55 The Silent Hill HD Collection looks like it could be the worst remaster yet.

Downgraded textures (unbelievable I know), broken contrast and desaturated colour (and the game wasn’t exactly colourful to start with), removed major visual filters (SH3 at least), removed depth of field (SH2 toilet intro at least), sharp jaggy and less dynamic shadows, at the very least muted lighting and rain streak effect in SH3’s rainy car scene, less and in some scenes completely removed volumetric fog effect, stretched FMV (at least give 4:3 option).

And that’s just what you can tell from a limited number of scenes in Gamespot’s comparison.

Silent Hill 2’s FMV was 60fps on PS2 but the PC and Xbox ports were dropped to 30fps with more compression artifacting and sound sync issues. The HD remaster appears to be based on the PC version but you can’t judge framerate from YouTube and a majority of web video. I think GameTrailers host 60fps videos now.

My favourite game series of all time (for some reason I have Solid Snake avatar now…) and I’m glad to hear this is now finally announced :)! I love how rumors are 99% correct in game industry x)…

Anyways, there’s one HUGE thing I’m not happy about… Ratchet: Deadlocked is _NOT_ included in the collection! Seriously!?! WHY??? You have to release it someday… I know it’s easy to sell an HD trilogy, and it’s also easy to set the price. It’s not the most loved game of the series, because it’s different from the other R&C games, and people don’t seem to like it when stuff gets changed *cough*All4One*couch*. Ratchet: Deadlocked is really really underrated game imo (it did sell pretty well though). That being said, I love how there’s multiplayer in UYA, but I prefered Deadlocked’s online mode.

Also, congratulation Insomniac Games :)! Keep up the great work!

I’m sorry but I won’t be buying this without Deadlocked. That was my favorite one, I played it over and over and still have my ps2 copy. I will pay more, or would have. Now I just hope and HD version comes out on PSN. I disagree with the critics who claim Deadlocked was the worse. It was the best.

Heck to the Yeah baby! Woooot! I’m extremely excited. I decided to give Crack In Time a try shortly after getting my first PS3 and since then Ratchet & Clank have climbed their way up the ranks to become one of my favorite franchises! I never had a PS2 so I missed all three of these games. I can’t accurately convey my level of excitement for this collection. Awesome!

I cannot wait. Now I can finally play all the Ratchet and Clanks I never experienced on the PS2 on the PS3, and can get the other Ratchet and Clanks for PS3 without feeling like I missed something! For a person who never had the PS2 and missed all these amazing games, like Sly Cooper (played on my cousin’s ps2, great times), Jak and Daxter, GoW, and the Shadow of Colossus/ICO collections, these HD collections have been amazing!

when I first herd rumors about this I thought that this collection would be only at 720p, but 1080p?! As Skid would say, awesome! but multiplayer too?!?!?! Wow, talk about over achieving!!! Hopefully this wont be a lazy port like the Jak and Daxter collection but I trust that Insomniac games trusts Idol Minds. Looking in comments, it seems several are disapointed by the exclusion of Deadlocked, and im disapointed by the exclusion of Size Matters. Cant they come to PS2 classics then? SO they wont be forgotten?

I’m a little bummed that Deadlocked isn’t included in the collection (im kinda curious why, but im sure theres a reasonable explanation), but i definitely can’t complain about the three main games being in there!

I know you obviously cannot say yes or no to a second Ratchet and Clank Collection featuring DEADLOCKED, Size Matters and Secret Agent Clank.

But can you consider it? I will BUY all these sony HD collections because I missed out on all the ps2 gems back in the day.

I am more excited for HD collections than some new titles!

If my intuition isn’t failing me, I would make a strong guess, due to these comments, that :

Deadlocked will be released on the PS Store as a stand-alone HD remaster and North Americans, should they pre-order, as a result of waiting, will get it free of charge. Europeans will also get it, but will have to pay.

That would be my best guess for the 10th ANNIVERSARY SURPRISE.

This made my day… i played thru 1 & 3 on ps2 ,but never got to play 2 ,and when i got into 3 mutliplayer is pretty much a wasteland so i’m glad its making it over…now if you guys would only give us optional move support i’d be happy. I think ratchet & clank is a series that screams the ablilty to point & shoot. If they could do it with Infamous there’s no reason it can’t be done with Ratchet.
