UPDATE: On November 17th (Pacific Time), the PlayStation network will undergo maintenance. Once this maintenance window has completed, the new policy will apply. If you want to purchase content under the current rules, please do so before this maintenance begins on November 17th.
We’d like to inform you of some upcoming changes to the usage policies for PlayStation Network game content. As of November 18, 2011, the number of devices that can be activated on one PlayStation Network account for game content purchased from the PlayStation Store will be updated as follows:
For game content purchased after November 18, 2011, a new policy will apply and the number of devices that can be activated will be as follows:
- PS3: Users will be able to play the game on up to 2 activated PS3 systems.
- PSP: Users will be able to play the game on up to 2 activated PSP systems.
Please note that this update will not affect game content purchased before November 18. The PSP rights include PSP-1000/2000/3000 series as well as the PSPgo system.
PlayStation Network users are able to change the activation setting through each device, and Sony Computer Entertainment plans to provide a new PlayStation Network account management website where users will be able to deactivate particular devices attached to their PlayStation Network account via their PC.
For more details on how to activate/deactivate the devices, please visit here or contact consumer services.
oh great it seems that since psn pass works the same way as psn games downloads, this means that any first party game from sony will only work on 2 device… Seems that 5 its too much for them sigh…
The fact that the activate and deactivate device remotely online should be there in the first place….
Keep on support them and it gets more and more greedy… Not even steam or origins have limits on how many computer you can game on…
Console gaming should be simpler, easier and less annoying…
NeonzNL being sony they may limit how many times u can deactivate the system for example 1 time per year
I wish Sony would work hard bringing us features on the share blog than new TOS and taking away features.
Cyb3rfr34k-iso i think u are right on what u saying
Why fix something thats not broke sony.So if you take this from us whats next?
@drakerules09
that’s the first thing i’m gonna try this 18 november!
turn off your router to be safe lol
yeah complete network shut down :)
i’ll even turn off the internet connection in the PS3 network setting
(seem legit) :D
but if that work that mean u can install games on infinitly “OFFLINE” PS3 system
that mean the BIGGEST MISTAKE SONY EVER DID
it like they just “HACK” THEIR OWN CONSOLE
Taking away 3 systems seems a bit extreme. I agree with others that this will affect the number of systems I would consider purchasing. Looks like this decision will affect the amount of systems Sony will sell in the future. The fact that Vita, PSPgo and PSP all count toward your portable allocation really seems extreme. I am disappointed in this move.
Cyb3rfr34k-iso but that will cost u 250 or 300 bucks for every system u do that if it works lol
This is good because my ps3 just got the YLOD sadly.
@Cyb3rfr34k-iso
If they does happen to work and Sony finds out, they more than likely will make it where you have a limited amount of deactivations.
I’ve been reading this post all day & finally got to the end. I have 2 PS3’s & 1 PSP GO & will get the Vita. This downgrade won’t stop me from buying a 3rd PS3 if they finally sell other colors like the do back in their homeland.
I understand why so many people are mad. Nobody likes things taken away, even if the knew d*mn well they were cheating the system. Human nature, among cheaters. Game sharing is a violation of the TOS. Always has been, from all the time I’ve been on the system. We all agreed to that in order to play online or to be online to shop. Any poster who used the word “friend” in their post is a game sharer, therefore in violation. I know it is rampant since I’ve been messaged by strangers to do this. They are all lucky that I couldn’t bring myself to report them.
My only sympathy is for families in one household who entered this agreement because they could save money over time legally. I think some software tweaking could be created to allow 5 on the same IP.
hmm, why paying 250 or 300? u mean for internet bandwidth?
because i have no-limit internet connection.
so that’ll cost me only “my” time to download ~300gb of games/contnent
oh i was talking about ps3 system thats what they cost right?
haha yeah brandnew PS3 cost around 250 to 350$ (350$ for the Move 320gb bundle)
I dont know why everyone is having problems with this…is very simple..
This only affects PSN content, Disk based games r fine
ANY content before november 18 will be fine.
ANY new content after the 18th is affected
If u have 2 or less ps3 or psp u r fine
If u have more than 2 ps3 or psp but don’t really care about the trophies then an easy simple solution is to just make another PSN account and then you will have 2 more slots open
Everyone this is a good thing…because it prevents less people from using ur account….plus who needs 5 ps3s 1 for each room? couldn’t u just walk to the room the ps3 is in? Why do u need 5 psps.. since they r portable…if each person has one..and they all use ur account i guess is time for them to get their own PSN account.
I have a question about the activation/deactivation process. Can I deactivate one then later activate it again? As I stated earlier I just bought a third PS3. So I have one for my living room, one for my bedroom (for when my woman kicks me off lol) and one for my sons room. If I wanted to switch from my main console to my bedroom console I can just activate one or the other correct?
jemin2009 will find out when they release the website for us
Also i like to say that if u have lets say 3 ps3s and each ps3 has different content..u can still redownload most if not all content again to the other ps3s via ur ps3 account before nov 18 that way all 3 ps3s can have the same content so if u make a new account on the 3rd ps3 u can still have all the old stuff…if u have room that is…
@ KevPC
That was a main attraction for my buying all the PS3 I have. I am not willing to make another account and pay for a game twice. Also while I don’t have 5 PS3’s I do have 3 and read my post above for the reasons it’s not plausible to walk to the other room to use the main one each time. lol
THIS IS GREAT ;D thanks sony!
and people need to chill if you want to use some content just activate the system you’re currently using what’s wrong with you?
=( this is gonna affect me.. was just tryin to share the love..
Talk about an epic fail. Then again, it’s sony so what do you expect?
Will being able to deactivate your systems via PC be an easy process? I’m out of activations due to disc errors and YLOD none I have access to except 1. Is something going to be required to deactivate such as serial numbers or just a few simple clicks? Thank, Karen.
I’m not using game sharing, but I still think this is a cheap shot. I already thought you were cheap when it was 5 now two? This is not solving anything anyway, I think it’s just going to lead to more piracy because it was allowed to and now it’s not most people will want what they had and whatever you will do. Don’t serve me the nice but not “content before 18 nov will not be affected”. You are removing candy from babies, are you that much into trouble??? Maybe we should create a foundation to support Sony’s crisis.
This is a great move if you’re trying to push me away from buying more Sony devices. Having inconvenient DRM that punishes your users for paying you instead of taking the trouble to pirate your software is bad enough, but now you’re actually going significantly raise the inconvenience bar for legitimate users on consoles they own because they had the temerity to buy more than two consoles from you. What a way to reward your dedicated customers!
I’ve got two PSPs (a 1000, and a Go) and a Vita on pre-order. I feel what you’re telling me is that you want me not to buy that third console.
You guys mad? Blame the scene/piracy group: DUPLEX. They figured out how to make PSN games work on PS3 custom-firmware and DESTROYED
[cont] DESTROYED the PSN economy.
Before very recently, the PSN was the last safe-haven to stop piracy. Now that DUPLEX decided to release PSN games for piracy, you have this.
@Jemin2009 idk if u can activate and deactivate anytime but why not?. Also u don’t have to pay for the game twice….just buy it from ur psn account and it will be there for u to redownload it on another ps3..as for the third ps3 well.. ur son can use the ps3 in his room for disk based games only…if he doesn’t have an account he will eventually need one if he is playing online..(who would want to use dad’s account am i right?). Eventually he will be old enough to pay for his own stuff. And when he grows up and moves away u can both play online together. so for now Couch co-op (if u have co-op games)
Was all set to post a nice comment But was hidered by it being too long.
I didn’t want to have to post several messages just to get a couple simple points across.
Point 1
Point one
Probibly won’t be buying a Vita anytime soon, after they come out, due to them being considered The same as a psp/go. I can live with 2 psp acitvations in my family but it will be inconvenent at times. Would like 3 since i have 3 family members with psp’s. But Vita’s should have there own.
I would also like to know how often can a PS3 be activated/deactivated?
I’m in a similar situation to jemin2009 from post 471. That is, there are occasions where our first two PS3s are being used to watch blu-rays and I’ve enjoyed the convenience of being able to run upstairs to the bedroom and play a PSN game there.
I respectfully encourage the decision makers at Sony to find some way (perhaps with Playstation+) to use PSN games on more than two consoles. Sony has spent a lot of marketing dollars on the “It only does everything” campaign so please consider that many people value that “everything” and have spent quite a bit of their money buying PS3s becasue of that added value.
And sony wonder why they get hacked
Kirkpad: you can’t blame DUPLEX or any other pirates for this: doing this or not is fully under Sony’s control and is Sony’s choice. If a company puts stopping piracy ahead of your convenience as a legitimate customer, that tells you something about how much they want you as a customer.
Pont 2
Will we be able to deactive just the newer content from say one psp, that a family member has finished with so that the other family members psp can use it. Or, like im afraid of, will we have to completely deactivate the psp, then activate on the other psp the newer content. And then of course reactive all the content on the first psp we wanted to keep on that psp? (Some of it that would have fallen under the 5 psp rule, cause it’s older content.)
5 is not too much, this is BS,SONY you lost my respect…..I cant believe you guys are doing this to your costumers. You guys are starting to look bad like MS.Whats next? paying to play online?
Logged on just to rate this a 1/5
BS move.
Well this is fine, as long as Sony realise many people (including myself) will never buy content from the Playstation Store ever again after the 18th…
Seriously, many people, especially families have many consoles in the one house.
The license should be covered for however many consoles one person owns, even if that means activation should be done by including proof of purchase, at least then people with 3, 4 or more consoles can use content they have paid for on any console they like.
Yet again Sony, I find myself in a position where I just can not justify sticking to you, even after so many years of buying many of your products, t.v’s, e-readers, etc.
Not happy. I think I’ll stick to PC use the 360 for any console needs.
All you people begging Sony to allow a third system or simply not provide this update at all are fooling no one! This is a clear attempt at cutting out the rampant game sharing issue from the playstation store and with the release of vita and Sony’s growing library of retail games it was only a matter of time before they pulled the plug. Now either one of two things are going to happen because of this move 1) purchases from the playstation store will increase becuase it’s more difficult to share, or 2)purchases will decrease because now instead of people buying a game they can share, they just stay away. Either way, If the store content continues to improve and Sony can create some real distance (in terms of use and function )between the free PSN and PS plus than regardless of how many systems you guys claim to want to activate because they are all in one home, the ultimate winner will be us gamers. I, for one hope that more people purchase now, and then we can really put the pressure on Sony to deliver even better content and perhaps get them to reflect the pricing seen on Steam!
@FriedConsole
Not everyone that owns more than 2 ps3’s are rich. Many are large families. Just because this decision doesn’t impact you, doesn’t mean you should discriminate against them.
Also, even if someone has money to afford new content, they shouldn’t have to buy content they own twice, they should be able to use it (as long as it is for personal use) as many times as they like, regardless.
Imagine if you just bought all the cod maps twice, in Aus they cost 22.50 each. So that $90 for content becomes $180, even without any other content that year. It is not fair to people to make them pay again for something they own already.
@Hard_CORE_Gmr
I, like many others, are against people sharing content around to avoid paying for it.
But I do not agree that those that are legitimate users should be disadvantaged by this move.
Hence, see my first post, directly above yours, stating that I think there should instead be a new policy, to at least make it more complicated to share content to other people, but within your own house, you should be able to use your own content
They should just leave it at 5, because making it 2 will just make it worse.. there are 4 PlayStation devices that have PSN and soon will include devices for android. So, we need to have up to 5 devices so our games can be playable on one of the devices we are using while on the go or anywhere in the world. Its a waste of money buying more than 1 PS device.. PS3 and PS Vita is good enough.. but there are people who have more than 2 PS Devices..
wow another low blow from sony thank you for nothing sony always with the useless updates. How bout give the XMB a new its slow in game and sometimes it frezzes. Also how bout the ability to customize our profile a lil more make some actual changes to PSN for god sakes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sweet il finally be able to take my account off the long-dead ps3 that used to be.
any idea when this new accountmangmnt site will launch?
This one is BS! Sony is moving backwards! Why can’t they produce more feature rather than taking and ripping off a feature we paid for.. Since launch they have done nothing. If THEY want to earn more PROFIT, IMPROVE the console!
guess they want to take the spotlight off netflix go for it sony
WHY DO SONY KEEP TAKING AWAY FEATURES THAT USERS LOVE?????!!!
I DONT USUALLY POST ANYTHING BUT THIS IS GETTING CRAZY!!
I FEEL THE NEED TO VENT BECAUSE I REALLY DONT WANT SONY TO FALL VICTIM TO HACKS AGAIN FOR TAKING AWAY FEATURES FROM USERS, I MEAN IF YOU TAKE SOMETHING AWAY, ADD SOMETHING THAT IS FUNCTIONAL FOR THE USER, NO ONE WANTS TO FEEL LEFT OUT OR CHEATED.
so when my roommates are on the 2 ps3s that I am currently activated on I will have to kick one of them off to deactivate one of them so I can use the third? same thing if my girlfriend is playing upstairs? I dont have a computer i can use at home to Deactivate one of them. The Playstation wil become the Waitstation where i have to spend time deactivating other systems just to I can play a new Downloaded game.
What this will do for me:
I will be less likely to buy psn games, because of the time it takes for me to switch between systems that I play all the time.
I will buy disc games just as before.
I get it sony you are trying to stop game sharing. I was happy to see Apple do what you did what you do with your music videos and apps.
All I am asking is that you reconsider.
