Hideo Kojima Talks Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, Peace Walker HD, PS Vita

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for PS3

These days, Hideo Kojima is a busy man. The Metal Gear mastermind recently revealed that the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is heading to the PS3 this November. The HD Collection includes revamped versions of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, complete with dual-analog-stick controls, 1080p graphics, smoother frame rates, a redesigned user interface, rumble support and much more.

We caught up with Kojima last week at an appearance in Mexico City and he was eager to speak with PlayStation.Blog readers. Enjoy the Q&A, and leave your favorite Metal Gear moments in the comments!

PlayStation.Blog: Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker was designed for PSP — a portable device. What changes did Kojima Productions make to the upcoming PS3 version so it could be enjoyed on a high-definition home console?

Hideo Kojima, Director, Kojima Productions: The PSP obviously has fewer buttons than the PS3 controller, and it had some limitations when it comes to control. Using the DualShock 3, movement of many things improved…as did, of course, [the addition of] rumble support.

On the PSP, it was also hard to tell some textures apart. Now, rendered in HD, they are much easier to see. The in-game text is also easier to read.

PSB: Your process of “transfarring” will allow PSP players to take their Peace Walker save files from one console to another, and we will also see similar cross-play support with the PS Vita and Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. Is this the future of gaming, and would you like to explore beyond what already has been announced?

Kojima: Peace Walker is the first step. It is a PSP game in HD that lets one go back and forth between one PSP and a PSP. The next step is to take PS2-quality games, such as Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3, to HD and then to take them to Vita transfarring.

My next step is games that will come out for the PS3 from now on, so I can take advantage of this technology with the Vita with content that is exactly the same. I hope that cloud service is available now, and it would be ideal for me if transfarring were to serve as a bridge between the two services.

PSB: Just before E3, a glimpse of what will be its new graphic engine (FOX Engine) was shown. What would you say are their greatest visual benefits? Is there anything that stands out in this technology that you can tell us about?

Kojima: For now, FOX Engine has high performance in developing games on multiple platforms; I think that is the most prominent feature. At this point, it is not an engine that has anything particularly prominent when compared to what’s on the market. From now on, we hope to add features and functions that stand out from other engines.

PSB: Okay, PS Vita has already been revealed. Are you interested in the console? What are the features that draw your attention most to a portable device?

Kojima: As for the multitouch pad on the back of the console, I do not want to force users to use it. The PS Vita has cutting-edge technology and it’s the best there is – especially with integration with the PS3 – and I am very pleased I can offer it to users.

PSB: With the commercial success of L.A. Noire, and the return of cyberpunk with Deus Ex: Human Revolution, do you believe that there is a market for a new Snatcher game?

Kojima: L.A. Noire is a game that I really like, but unfortunately I have not played it. I think it is coming out in Japan today, so when I return, I intend to play it. This idea of an open world in 3D is very good, and I would love to do something like Snatcher, but I do not have the time or the means to do so. But if anyone else would like to develop it, I would love it.

NOTE: A few hours after this interview, Hideo Kojima, in collaboration with Suda 51 and Akira Yamaoka, announced a radio drama called “Sdatcher” based on Snatcher.

PSB: What qualities do you think a game designer needs to be hired in today’s industry?

Kojima: Right now, it’s very similar to movies: You need a lot of money. So rather than doing what you want, doing what you like, you must have a clear idea of marketing and sales. That’s what’s happening to us with FOX Engine; you do not need be an expert in programming to develop a game, but if you have a question, you still need an expert on-hand to provide an answer.

As for expression, that has reached a high level. Video games are trying to reach the peak of entertainment, so game makers should be clear that things like emotion and sound are among the many things that have to be involved.

PSB: How has your perspective from your business point of view and as a game developer changed, now that you are Vice President of Konami Digital?

Kojima: I would like to not change. My priority continues to be to create and produce my own games. Now that I can do this well, I can generate more time to help in other company products, especially in creative ways.

  • OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!
I CAN’T BELIEVE THIS THA’S WHY I LOVE PLAYSTATION AND SONY.
CAN’T WAIT FOR THE PS VITA AND THIS GAME!!!
    AND OF COURSE MGS RISING

  • @99

Please get some perspective, you have absolutely have no idea what you’re talking about.

  • You have no idea how much I want this collection. NO IDEA. FUUUUCCC&@&&@!!1. MGS2HD!!!! My favorite game of all time!! AND MGS3 – one of the best games of all time. Metal Gear Solid is the best entertainment series out there. I’m buying three copies. No joke. I’ll prove it if necessary when the time comes. 2 PS3, 1 Xbox, and I don’t even use Xbox.

When you say dual-analogs supported is that just MGS3 and Peace Walker or is that MGS2 also?? Cause if it is…
    I… will… die… happy.

  • …really looking forward to playing Snake Eater again.

  • Favourite moment: Running around in a giant colon, thinking “what in the world is going on,” wearing nothing but a cardboard box.

Looking forward to seeing the games in HD and experiencing another part of the MGS story. Hopefully the controls aren’t as over the top as MGS4, which after playing the demo, I decided against buying.

  • I thank Kojima for his games but im not a fan of him anymore..

  • This is a good thing…a very good thing.

Hopefully they can make the next TRUE installment in the MGS series now that this is outta the way. I knew this was coming since rising was announced for cross platform. Gotta expand that market base, even if it means working with the OTHER guy i guess meh rising dont count IMO.

  • how much is going to cost?

  • The only one i played was peacewaker but i did see mgs 3 and its aaaaaaaaaaaawsome!

  • Not one replay. I love it when they post, and clock out for the day. I am getting sick of the so called hd remakes. My expectations for this are low. The only good hd remake so far was god of war 1 and 2, all the other remakes are just a little tweak. I want some one to do a hd remake. Not just a hd conversion. What about trophies? How about a trophy patch for MGS 4. What a great way to get me to buy it again and play it one more time.

  • Can someone please clarify if this means there will be two different versions of the game available, a PS3 version and a separate Vita version?

  • @ megamixer “That would be like creating a whole new game. Far more expensive than putting out a trio of upscales.”

Do you really think they can improve the PS1 graphics to the point it AT LEAST looks like a PS2 game? That is essentially remaking the entire game (i.e MGS Twin Snakes and I don’t think they would add that to the collection). Either way they would have to remake the entire game since we all know that “HD’ing” a PS1 game would look terrible and you would also have to update the controls to fit the Dualshock.I don’t see anyone asking for a “HD’ing” of FFVII instead its always remakes, why? exactly. That is why I said that I HOPE they do something special for MGS1 and they very well could, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

  • HIDEO KOJIMA SAN !! ARIGATO GOZAIMASU !!! please tell TETSUYA NOMURA SAN to remake FINAL FANTASY VII AGAIN !! ^_^

  • For everyone crying for trophies it would take months and millions of dollars to make that patch. i dont think you people understand what its like to open code back up and change it.

  • Dont care for these HD ing of ps2 games they really dont look that much better than the originals did. But for Metal Gear i ‘ll probably get it Because 3 copies of MGS3, 2 copies of MGS2, and 2 copies of MGS1 are’nt enough.
You people whining about GUNS OF THE PATRIOTS getting trophy support i really doubt that will happen unless they decide to re-release it on the next console. Anyways even though i have 1505 trophies currently i can honestly say ache********/trophies are one of the worst things to happen to gaming along with [DELETED] multiplayer on just about every game now and lack of focus on single player.
If you cant enjoy a game with no trophies you have no business gaming.

  • Please include trophy support for MGS4 and Peace Walker!! Give your customers what they want Konami, you will sell more stuff and make more money. What don’t you get Kojima-san?

  • I’ve never played a Metal Gear Solid game.

  • (And I won’t even consider trying them out with this HD release if it ends up lacking trophy support. At this point, not throwing trophies into games, even ports of older games, is very lazy.)

  • Its not our fault Sony made trophies mandatory. So now when companies repackage a game with hd support they should have to include trophies. (even game of year editions should too, darn u oblivion)

I would rather keep a game for replay value for trophies then some lame mutiplayer.

Here is another question, I heard they might not even get them all converted to hd. So what the word on that, might just be a collection with one game HD. What a rip

  • MGS fanboy FOREVER!!!!!

  • DId i read that right Vp of konami digital. ? whoaaaaa. hideo is balling!! I remember when this guy 1st step on the scene sems like yester. thisis a huge leap. Congrats on that..

Konami is going to be making some killer titles..Not hat they’re now , this good for gaming..

  • I’m not going to buy this collection y?
Because they are not keeping the original voice acting in the Japanese version that’s y.
    I’ll play my PS2 masterpiece’s

  • Problem is that I never really thought much of ‘stealth games’ till Assassin’s Creed. It was only after playing the Assassin’s games that I could enjoy Hideo’s little games with the exclamation points. But I do like them.

  • The 3 I haven’t played. YES!!! now we just need Trophy support for MGS4!

  • I hope it is the substanse, subsitance, a special edition of MGS peace walkers, and /or a early demo of MGS rising or something extra to play even more.

  • i can’t get no sleep insomnia, I’m very excited!

  • Can Kojima tell us why there is no Metal Gear Solid 1 on the blu-ray?

It doesn’t make sense that the first part of the story is missing.

  • Koji-god <3

  • MGS 1 is missing cause you can download it from the PSN store. It is a same they cant just make the ps3 play ps2 games. Oh wait they did but took it away.

I heard they are redoing the voices for snake eater, probably just for the Japan version. what the word on that?

  • “I would love to do something like Snatcher, but I do not have the time or the means to do so.”

Wow. It’s official. Kojima can’t not do Metal Gear.

  • Can’t wait to play MGS3 in HD, my favorite MGS game of all time :D

  • I wonder why Kojima haven’t included the remake of the first Metal Gear Solid? If there gonna do something like this they should do it all the way… I don’t understand?

  • MGS is my favorite game series. I’m gonna buy this day 1! Hopefully they remake the 1st one too

  • How about some MGS Avatars?

  • @Hooligantuan & bakerarmy
What are you people on about? All HD Collection games have had trophies. Why would you not assume the same for this?

    @VenomUK
“It doesn’t make sense that the first part of the story is missing.”
Maybe Kojima hates Solid Snake? He’s barely in MGS2 and not in MGS 3 / PW at all.

MGS2 = Raiden = hype for MGS Rising (if it even exists at this point)
    MGS3 / PW = Big Boss = Kojimas mancrush.

  • Original comment was a bit long so it will be broken into segments. Your welcome.

To all of the people who feel MGS4 needs trophy support: No, the game is just fine as it is. The only thing that trophies add is “replay value” and the MGS series should remain a story focused series. Adding in trophies at this time really wouldn’t add much to the game.

  • For all of you saying that Konami is guilty of treason: These days, sticking to one platform means that companies miss out on a lot of possible revenue for the game. When this happens, companies will most likely have to either lay off hundreds of very talented people or be forced to close down and never continue that beautiful series that made it popular. Instead of calling them traitors, by the way, a vast majority of the MGS franchise has been multiplatform or ported over to another console. Just be happy that Konami and Kojima Productions will remain alive and well with this decision.

  • For those who are wondering why MGS1 wasn’t in MGS HD Collection: It’s because an HD remake of a Playstation 1 game would not look good at all. They also mentioned the gameplay feeling dated as well. Instead of doing a remake, they are working on a re-imagining of the game with not only some gameplay tweaks, but some story fixes as well. I would give you the source, but I feel that with today’s technology, you can find it yourself. Your welcome.

  • “MGS3 / PW = Big Boss = Kojimas mancrush.” – megamixer

Wish he would have stayed dead. Those two games were completely unnecessary from a story standpoint. MGS3 was fun, but the story made me want to puke. I never played Peace Walker, but from what I read of its story, it’s even worse.
I would be satisfied with MGS2 HD on the store.

  • I would love to see the original Metal Gear Solid for PS redone for ps3, using the Gamecube version as the backbone. Would be a definite buy for me.

  • @megamixer and Qster4

I am not all about trophies, I would just be a cool addition to MGS4. I know the hd collection should have them. It just makes it easier for me to jump back in and replay a game I have beaten.

As for hd collection, I am not a fan of just softing the edges. This collection uses a new engine from what I have read, and the psp game has new controller functions worked in.

I have faith in MGS. I know it will be done right, just venting about other hd remakes that are just for a buck.
I own a ps3 that plays ps2 games. So I can play them all anyway. How hard would it be for Sony to update firmware and use/sell a thumb drive with the emotion chip?

How about that Sony, a USB drive emotion chip? Plug it in and play away.

  • all i want to say is….. WHY MULTIPLATFORM!!!!!???! SELL OUT!
well i loveeeeeeeeeeee MGS so ill forgive u Kojima….. but i hate how u are going to give out peace walker….

  • I hope since they are going to remaster ps2 titles i hope they will remaster kingdom hearts 1 and 2 but keep it to ps3 only if the game started with playstation it should stay with it especially when most of the games have been on ps well most of the major games.

  • Yup, getting MGS in HD for sure. I probably want rising more though, hope it comes before 2012.

  • NICE!! they should also make portable-ops HD. :)

  • HEY DONT FORGET TO UPDATE MGS4 WITH TROPHIES> I DONT CARE IF YOU MAKE ME PAY 10$ FOR THE UPDATE IF IT TAKES THAT MAKE WORK FOR YOU GUYS> I WILL PAY AND I KNOW LOTS OF OTHER WILL PAY JUST TO PLAY MGS4 WITH TROPHIES

  • Why did Sony allow this collection to go on Xbox 360???

  • I already have MGS2 and MGS3 for PS2, but I don’t have my PS2 anymore, I want backwards compatibility…

  • This is about MGS so why are people still [DELETED] about cross game chat? They should get reported for constantly talking about it. Anyway, the MGS HD Collection is my new obsession.

  • It would have been great if Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes was part of the HD Collection.
