E3 2011: It’s An Exciting Time to be a Member of the PlayStation Family

Over the years on the E3 stage, we’ve talked about the “PlayStation family” – our enthusiastic fans and loyal supporters around the world. This year, “PlayStation family” has taken on an increasingly important meaning. I personally want to thank each and every one of you for your patience during the recent PlayStation Network outage. We are extremely grateful for your passion and loyalty. The PlayStation community is stronger and more vibrant than ever and, as detailed a few minutes ago during the E3 press conference, we’re going to thank you for your loyalty with new gaming and entertainment experiences on PlayStation and PSN that will continue to affirm our leadership.

When we raised the curtain on our next-generation portable device this past January, we felt the waves of excitement that rippled throughout the industry. As Kazuo Hirai just announced onstage at E3, the official name of this revolutionary portable entertainment system is PlayStation Vita. PlayStation Vita with Wi-Fi will be available starting at $249. AT&T will be the exclusive U.S. wireless provider for PlayStation Vita, ensuring that you remain connected to content and your friends on the go. We also revealed a plethora of exciting new software titles, including Hot Shots Golf, Hustle Kings, LittleBigPlanet, Little Deviants, ModNation Racers, Reality Fighter, Ruin (working title) Sound Shapes, Street Fighter X Tekken, Super Stardust Delta, UNCHARTED: Golden Abyss, and Wipeout 2048. It’s a fantastic lineup…and that’s just the beginning. Take a look at the new PlayStation Vita.

The era of 3D has officially arrived and there are over 50 million PS3 units around the world that deliver the true 3D experience across games, movies and TV. Our 3D gaming portfolio is rapidly expanding with nearly 40 titles worldwide, including the upcoming UNCHARTED 3: Drake’s Deception that promises to take 3D immersion to new heights. Today we also introduced a new PlayStation branded, high definition 24-inch 3D Display, which will be available later this year. The 3D Display comes with 3D glasses, an HDMI cable and the highly anticipated Resistance 3 game, to give you everything necessary to jump into the world of 3D, at a very affordable price. The monitor features advanced technology that allows two people playing a game to see individual, unique, full-screen images of gameplay rather than a split-screen image. We know PlayStation fans are always at the cutting-edge of innovation and we think you’ll love this immersive 3D experience that is optimized for gaming.

Last year, we introduced you to PlayStation Move and the reception was phenomenal. To date, we’ve sold 8.8 million units globally and there will be nearly 200 Move supported software titles available globally by the end of this year. And we keep adding to the experience. The Sharp Shooter attachment has been flying off of the shelves and has quickly become a must-have for anyone wanting to be placed into the thick of the battle playing one of our first-person shooters like Killzone 3, SOCOM 4 or, later this year, Resistance 3. PlayStation will also continue to expand our Move software line-up for the casual gaming enthusiast, including our latest title for your next party at home with friends – Everybody Dance.

Our publishing partners really help set the PlayStation experience apart with amazing exclusive content only on PS3. For the army of fans of the popular first-person shooter Bioshock franchise, Ken Levine was onstage to announce that Bioshock Infinite will support PlayStation Move and that they are working on a Bioshock title for PlayStation Vita. We also unveiled exclusive content on a number of new games on PS3, including Battlefield 3, Dust, Need for Speed: The Run, Saint’s Row: The Third, and SSX: Deadly Descents.

The PlayStation brand has become synonymous with interactive entertainment and today we’re delighting more consumers across more platforms than ever before. Across hardware, software and PlayStation Network, our platform is stronger and more relevant than ever, delivering breakthrough experiences that consumers crave. There’s a lot to be excited about in 2011 and we look forward to sharing more news with you in the months ahead as valued members of our PlayStation family.

For those of you who were not able to join us at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena this evening, you can download the full presentation. Once again, thank you for your support.

  • Sony you let me DOWN BIG TIME

  • NGP looks great and a very competitive price…does that include any memory sticks would be one question and will there be a manner to get video out?

Also…you better have xgc on the PS3 by the time PSV launches.

  • WilliamFuchs420

Anyone know about onboard storage on the vita they really didnt say much about the specs

  • @43 hey mw3 fanboy just so ya know if you havent realized it yet, cod is perhaps one of the most overrated pieces off garbage outthere, why do find fun in a game which is the same thing as the last one with one new gun and ten million new bugs

  • I’m disappointed in the fact that the PlayStation 3 doesn’t have Cross Game Chat, but the PSV does. What gives? are we going to get it or not?

  • Hey uncle jack its matt i watched e3 it was amazing the vita looks great cant wait to buy it!!!!!please reply

  • Uncharted 3…
    Sly 4…
    Medieval Moves…
A bunch of minor exclusive bonuses…
    Bioshock free with Bioshock Infinite…
    Cheap 3DTV….

    And weigh that all against…
    A 20 minutes delay
No Sorcery, Last Guardian, FFVXIII (it’s gone multiplat, I’m fairly sure) or killer-app Move games
    No original IPs
“Vita” (Not as bad as “Wii” I’ll grant you)
AT&T Exclusivity (WTF? If/when you ever come to Verizon, I’ll be waiting)

I gotta say, it was disappointing.

  • I liked almost everything about the conference, but I only have to comments to make.

as for the PSVita getting functions that the PS3 fan-base has been asking for for a while now seems a little ridiculous? what ever happened the the Skype support that the PSP had but the PS3 never got? Seems too late now seeing as how Microsoft is buying Skype. and giving them cross game chat is a bit ridiculous as well; with leaving us out. it seems like the PS3 is getting nothing new, and I personally think it’s about time for it.

Secondly I’m just wondering where the bad-ass Kevin Butler stuff was? I was waiting for him to show up and just be a legend.. but he never came :(

Outside of that the PSVita looks awsome, good job.

  • Thx for the apology :) Needed Kevin Butler lol..Now for some insight..Vita cross game chat but not PS3?..NO EXCUSE..Vita to be w/AT&T..WTF??? Verizon would have been waaaayyy better..So now Vita users will be screwed by that crap company…Everything else was awesome

  • Would have been nice to have a xmb update. Or psn update. We need some new features to spice things up. Still a great conferance though.

  • Thats my uncle right there everyone and to all those other people sayin it wasnt my uncle i say ha

  • Where are new PS3 game announcements? Was expecting more from Sony.
Ubisoft was the best one imo

  • Ill buy the vita without doubt………….. but why at&t. i might just buy the wifi model and pay extra to make my evo 4g a hotspot.

  • I seriously don’t get sony, so cross game voice chat is a monster for ps3 but it comes as a standard feature on Vita? (which sony kindly named after me *cough*)

Oh I now need to go and change my underwear ’cause I’m all wet LOL E3 mega pwn, and I loved the PlayStation TV, 1080p+3D for $400 plus some changes wow I’m gonna get one :D and 24” its perfect for my bedroom.

  • i guess this was an ok show.lots of move games,a movie feature thingy,a couple of hardcore games and vita. btw, the device is pretty cool and builted in with features but i didnt hear anything about the web browser.also, while the pricing wasnt ridiculous it was still on the expensive side since we are still in a recession economy and all that jazz….
oh the 3d bundle was a good one.but again, i was expecting more like new rpgs for the ps3, a cool firmware update with goodies with an updated browser to boot.so, all in all i’m gonna wait to see how the new device performs before making any commitment…

  • MW3 is going to suck, they didn’t want that poo stinking up the conference.

  • btw, kudos to the playstation team for doing the streaming as smoothly as it was!
i’m really pleased about this :)

  • AT&T partners with Sony for psvita… not impressed. I would have been more impressed if it was an open platform.. with that in mind the wifi model will fly off the shelves and will be the one that lands in my hand. Tethered to my android DROIDX is fine by me. All titles look great but Dust and battle field for ps3 are definitely. In my cross hairs!

GIVE US NEW FEATURES ON THE PS3 ALREADY

  • KB!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is PSN!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Nothing exciting poop it waz all poop

  • I think most are being unfair to AT&T, just because they have Verizon.

The iPhone came out on AT&T and I hardly think it failed. So I don’t see how everyone (Who has Verizon) thinks that the PSV is going to fail.

Suck it up and wait for it to come to Verizon. That, or get the Xperia Play which is only on Verizon.

  • Resistance 3
    Uncharted 3
    Starhawk
    Ico/Shadow of the collossus
    Sly 4
    All day one.

Plus, I can’t believe PS VITA is only 249!!!!
    Looks incredible!!!

  • at&t is not so bad but its not the best.

  • AT&T sucks!

  • Jack, ask how Kaz felt to be laughed and booed when he announced AT&T as your exclusive 3G partner? I’m not shocked at all SONY went that way. Second biggest mistake after the name for the new handheld.

People don’t call it PSVita. Call it the PSP (PlayStation Pita) or PSV (PlayStation VEGETA).

    Double facepalm all the way.

  • I don’t want XgameCHAT btw. LOL
    :D

I just don’t want other people playing other games bugging me. sorry

  • jack is your nephew matt(i think it nephew not sure im dumb) but good job at e3 and i think my mom is at your house for a visit right.

  • On another note… cross game chat I bereave wasn’t talked about except for the vita… I think its going to be a natural flow for Sony to adopt it to the ps3 at the same time or soon after the vita release. What a better way to test the feature then on a portable device then adopting it to 5million plus systems is a smart move (but this is all speculation on my part)

  • PEOPLE PEOPLE PEOPLE WHO EVER SAID IT WASN’T COMING TO PS3 IM PRETTY SURE UNLESS SONY IS UTTERLY STUPID THAT THE “PARTY CHAT” SHOWCASED ON THE VITA WILL BE IN THE PS3 IF NOT I AM SELLING MY PS3 ALL MY GAMES AND PSN ID (I HAVE HUNDEREDS OF $ WORTH OF GAMES DOWNLOADED) AND BUYING AN XBOX 360

  • 360 has cross game party chat its nice i like it and its awesome to have..But why can’t i have it on my PS3, I know the ps3 is more than capable of it, if a teenie portable can do, i’m sure ps3 candle handle it ….CROSS GAME CHAT!!!! MAN

  • Its a no brainer cross game chat should of been implemented since the beginning.

  • that was cool when kobye came on stage

  • 75 True it is capable of it 4 more days till the new escalation map pack comes out cant wait.

  • Still looking forward to BF3 the most and Uncharted 3.
PSVITA looks sweet but the at&t SKU fails. Not the best move IMO it’s going to kill that SKU which $299 might have been feasable for many and 3G on a portable would be very desirable but the at&t just killed it.

  • Got to do something about your server problems too, a new web browser for ps3, could i watch E3 on ps blog through my ps3 web browser noooo, could i get into home to watch it there cuz of all the traffic nooooooo, had to watch it on G4

  • got to get uncharted 3 :)

  • Jack, where’s Sorcery, bro?

  • CROSS GAME CHAT
    CROSS GAME CHAT
    CROSS GAME CHAT
    CROSS GAME CHAT
    CROSS GAME CHAT
    CROSS GAME CHAT

    1. CROSS GAME CHAT
    2. MORE FEATURES (IF YOU DON’T KNOW THEN GO TO THE BLOG-SHARE)
    3. NOW IT SEEMS THAT BLOG-SHARE IS USELESS
    4. WHY CROSS GAME CHAT FOR PSVITA AND NOT PS3?

  • Modern warfare 3 is going to be awesome

  • The PSVita is pretty cool! I will not get the 3G version because I refuse to use AT&T… been there and will never go back… VZW only lol. Service was terrible. Otherwise, I am excited and want this.

Sony, the AT&T exclusivity is rather lame.

  • Man i was really hopping for a revamped xmb or psn store :/

  • I am a fan of both PS3 and 360, xbox should of strayed away from kinecton E3, ps move i am interested, considering my wife kids and I live in a small 3 bedroom apartment, if i had any motion devices, i would be knocking out my family by accident and child protective services would be at my door…lol

  • who cares about cross game chat seriously i think its a disaster waiting to happen

  • RyanMcBainDOTcom

Hey Jack, you know we wanted cross game chat for the PS3, not PSVita right?

  • I think that the only thing we didn’t know from there was the price of PlayStation Vita…. -__________-

    I mean c’mon Sony!!!!!!

WHERE is Cross Game Chat for PS3!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?
    Cross Game Chat
    Cross Game Chat
    Cross Game Chat
    Cross Game Chat
    Cross Game Chat
    Cross Game Chat
    Cross Game Chat

  • That press conference was pretty boring. I was glad to see some Uncharted 3 and even Resistance 3 looked fun. But really, where were the big titles? Microsoft killed it today with Gears of War 3, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, Halo 4, Forza 4, etc. But the one thing that bugs me the most is that both Sony and Microsoft have focused too much on motion gaming.

But on another note, the PlayStation Vita looks neat. But AT&T as the 3G provider? Are you out of your mind Sony? AT&T 3G is useless most of the time and it won’t change on the PlayStation Vita. The only network that Sony should be putting the Vita on is Verizon which is the clear front runner in most of the United States. If AT&T can’t provide good service in the Chicago area, what makes you think they can do better elsewhere? If I bought a Vita, it would most definitely be without 3G due to this. And another thing, 3G? Not only did you miss out on the Verizon network, but you also missed out on the only true 4G experience in existence. Yes, I’m talking about 4G LTE. Why have 3G with the “Next Generation Portable” when 3G is so last generation?

    /end rant lol

  • I like how at the 2006 E3 they showed PS3 with having cross game chat then turns out it wasn’t compatible with many games so they didn’t turn the feature on. So now you show it on the PSVita at this E3. Will it be coming to the PS3 or will it fail on both consoles yet again?

  • ps move i am not interested in not interested

  • RT Venge My girlfriend had an iphone with at&t and when driving on a 10 mile stretch of highway near a major city Her call would drop 3-4 times. I’m not being unfair, at&t just fails that badly. Worst network were it boats to have the best 3G coverage. I’m not a verizon fanboy but it does work the best where I live and travel.
