This press release just hit the wire – PlayStation Store and related services (like voucher redemption) back this week:
SONY AND SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCE FULL RESTORATION OF PLAYSTATION®NETWORK SERVICES
Tokyo, May 31, 2011 – Sony Corporation and Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) announced today that Sony Network Entertainment International (SNEI, the company) will fully restore all PlayStation®Network services in the Americas, Europe/PAL territories and Asia, excluding Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea by the end of this week. The company will also resume Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity™ for PlayStation®3 (PS3®), PSP® (PlayStation®Portable), VAIO and other PCs. Details for Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea as well as the remaining services on Qriocity will be announced as they become available.
The company implemented considerable security enhancements to the network infrastructure, as well as conducted testing of the payment process and commerce functions. The first phase of PlayStation Network and Qriocity restoration began on May 15 in the Americas and Europe/PAL territories, followed by Japan and Asian countries and regions on May 28, when the company brought partial services back online. With this partial restoration users were able to access to some of the services such as online game play, account management, friend lists and chat functionality were restored. The full restoration of PlayStation Network as well as part of services to become available on Qriocity will include:
• Full functionality on PlayStation®Store
• In-game commerce
• Ability to redeem vouchers and codes
• Full functionality on Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for PS3, PSP, VAIO and
other PCs
• Full functionality on Media GoCustomers will be able to purchase and download games and video content from the PlayStation®Store on PS3 or PSP. In addition, consumers will have full access to Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity through PS3, PSP, VAIO and other PC’s. Service restoration of Video on Demand powered by Qriocity™ and Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for a variety of network-enabled Sony devices will be announced later.
“We have been conducting additional testing and further security verification of our commerce functions in order to bring the PlayStation Network completely back online so that our fans can again enjoy the first class entertainment experience they have come to love,” said Kazuo Hirai, Executive Deputy President, Sony Corporation. “We appreciate the patience and support shown during this time.”
The company will be offering customers a “Welcome Back” package of services and premium content to all registered PlayStation Network* and Qriocity account services. The details of this program will continue to be detailed regionally.
* Only available for those countries with access to PlayStation®Store.
We will update the PlayStation Blog when the PlayStation Store is once again open for business.

@doodooshorts – I’m with you. Between this crap with Sony, Xbox’s failure rate and Nintendo’s crappy line up, this generation has been one huge stumbling block as far as I’m concerned. Sony keeps removing stuff and not adding what was promised at the beginning. Now I just want a good PC to hook up to my TV that will do everything that I want it to do instead of this half-hearted attempt at competing with a PC crap. I had such high hopes for this generation, too. With no cross game chat, no backwards compatibility, no other OS, no trophy room and this Cinavia crap,…. Eh, just give me a PC, already. Even when they do decide to announce PS4, we already know that everything they advertise as a feature will just be removed after they get our money. I bought an overpriced system because it was advertised as doing so much stuff. FU, Sony. You have ruined me on console gaming.

Blah, blah, blah. Sony delays another thing. Remember when the network would be down 2-3 days? Twenty five days later we got half of the network and now it sounds like they are giving us the same old crap excuses. By the end of the week, what week this one or two years for now. Sony your loyalty is going out the window everyday you drop a load of dung on your customers.

Good news but, Sony said that the store would be back by the end of the month. If it is not up by today then technically it will not be up by the end of the month. I am very disappointed, I have spent so much money on the PS store and then you guys give me free games that I already own to “welcome me back” and then you guys can’t even comply with a commitment date that you made. Very Disappointed…
@neohumpy… OMG.. you just reminded me of the anger I had way back when they started making ps3 non backdwads compatibility… I almost didn’t buy a ps3 because of that.. I’m not sure why I did…
@707 sorry but sunday is the first day of the week so i doubt it would be sunday but since saturday is the end of the week i would guess that it would be then so it seems pretty simply put the end of this week SATURDAY.
And now that I had to wait this long the welcome back offers are starting to look more lame than they did when they announced them.
People listen yes sony is having issues keeping deadlines. In my opinion they shouldn’t announce any dates because we all expect it to be back up and when it doesn’t some of us say oh well it will be here eventually and then I can download my DLC and comics for the PSP PSone Classics PSP/PS3 games map packs etc… then some others go into a rage like state or whine like children. You have to consider they can and most likely have run into issues(never seen a large scale network go up without some sort of issue) and when they do that date gets pushed back and then people get upset…which I can understand to a certain point. once you start talking trash and making threats of going PC gaming or *cringe* to the xbox(xbox=inferior machine)

745 you need an origional it sounds like even the second gen fat system doesn’t have ps2 support but that is why i paid less than a system that also housed a ps2 insided of it

@nick9221 – I’ll tell you why I did. It was a mistake. I hit the pick 3 lotto for $500 and went and traded my PS2 in toward a PS3 thinking all my PS2 games would still work on it. It was the first week that the new 40gb model was out that had removed it. I had no idea they had taken it away. Granted, I didn’t keep up on gaming news as much back then as I do now, but I can only imagine how many other people got taken that way, too. It’s called “Bait and Switch”, and is usually illegal.

why do u think theres server maintenance its gonna be ready today but they say the week because there probably restoring 1 at a time i bet Japan and the Americas will be up by today/tomorrow but the rest of you can wait we spend more on games and systems so we are statistically the best choices for returning the ps store to first its not that your less important by any means its just the best move for buisness
when i saw the phrase “by the end of the week” , my hopes for the ps store to be up anytime soon were crushed.

How very Japanese of Sony. They miss the deadline so instead of losing face they tell us that now the good news is they will be up within the week hoping many forget they said it will be up by today. I love my playstation 3. I have owned a ps since the first one. I will never go to a XBox cause as bad as Sony screwed up they still don’t rob you like Microsoft does. I went passed irritated to angry. Being a capitalist I understand covering your ass but enough is enough. The PR isnt working cause we have all heard it many times this month. When the store is up this week I will be happy cause I will get the dlc I paid for finally but never again will I use my info to buy anything online ever again. That is the true damage done. Not just to Sony but to all online services.

It’s easy to see why they removed the b/c from the machine. They say it was to lower the cost of production, but in reality it is so that they can wait for everyone’s old ps2’s to die and then charge us all over again for a digital copy that costs next to nothing for them to make available. Once they figured out how much they were going to make from selling 20 year old games for $9.99 a pop, they had to pull the ability to play the old discs off of the machine so that they can charge $15.99 a pop for the ps2 games you could buy used for $2.99.
-=> s Now I know some of you know what it is like to rebuild services similar to this albeit on a MUCH smaller scale and those can take more than a month depending on what happened or you are building a network from scratch and the size of the network (setting up servers, workstations, switches, and routers(and not the kind you get at best buy the kind that cost as much as a car and have to be programed from a CLI(.think DOS or a Linux terminal) mainly LANs and sometimes VPNs and small scale WANs. Sony is dealing with a global scale WAN. That large of a scale is insane. Sony is actually making good time and those who know what I’m talking about would agree. I’m waiting to get the stuff I paid for just like everyone else and some games I am waiting to play because of DLC I bought/will buy (Dragon Age 2, Hyperdimension Neptunia, Ar Tonelico Qoga)

I think everyone just needs to relax the store WILL be up. Sony wants it up as much as us if not more(they are losing money every day it is down) So please chill out the negativity is a downer for the people here to discuss games not complain. We are gamers I know you all have patience how many hours/days/weeks have we worked on trophies, finding that rare item , level grinding..Disgaea/Tactical RPG fans know what I mean about level grinding I’ve gone on 20+ hour grinding sessions(on weekends or on vacation time of course…or going to work with no sleep) So cut Sony some slack and if not them cut your fellow gamers some slack and talk about gaming…like what you’re going to get when the store is up, or recommend games from the store. I reccomend Disgaea afternoon of darkness and Disgaea Dark Hero Days.

im kind of wondering how come people still complaining when they gave us a TARGET DATE now they give us A WILL BE TURNED ON BY THE END OF THE WEEK DATE like you wanted so they said the end of the week for sure and if im wrong ill come on and appologize for defending but if it is on which no pleasing some whatso ever you appologize to me which granted wont happen but if im wrong i will are you going to bet me which you will but wont follow through with you will go download your freebies and be off on your happy way
I think after many missed deadlines we have cut Sony slack.
they never set deadlines they said they will try and about the 24th where on here did they even say the 24th that was on another non sony site if i dont read it on here im not even going to waste my time with it
