PlayStation Network Security Update

443 1

On Tuesday, April 26 we shared that some information that was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. Once again, we’d like to apologize to the many users who were inconvenienced and worried about this situation.

We want to state this again given the increase in speculation about credit card information being used fraudulently. One report indicated that a group tried to sell millions of credit card numbers back to Sony. To my knowledge there is no truth to this report of a list, or that Sony was offered an opportunity to purchase the list.

One other point to clarify is from this weekend’s press conference. While the passwords that were stored were not “encrypted,” they were transformed using a cryptographic hash function. There is a difference between these two types of security measures which is why we said the passwords had not been encrypted. But I want to be very clear that the passwords were not stored in our database in cleartext form. For a description of the difference between encryption and hashing, follow this link.

To reiterate a few other security measures for your information: Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well. To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports.

We continue to work with law enforcement and forensic experts to identify the criminals behind the attack. Once again, we apologize for causing users concern over this matter.

Our objective is to increase security so our customers can safely and confidently play games and use our network and media services. We will continue to provide updates as we have them.

  • @mcbuttz how little you seem to understand of international law is astounding
@prettiboy because no one is outside of governments, and even they only use that high level of security for the most critical of data.

  • @aces

no it is quite ironical, you want them to do specifically what you chastize them for doing. they won’t have a date until everything passes their test. Their projections are likely based on that they would have passed and more work wouldn’ t be required. That obviously isn’t what happen and that “true mythical date” has been pushed back.

Two weeks ago Sony said a few days, then we got new information and we found i would be longer. A week ago they said a week, then we got new info and found out it would be longer. Yesterday we got a date of “some time this week” and until further information comes, that’s the information to go on. Now i’m a fairly smart guy and i’m able to put together that “within a week” is in fact, not March 3rd 2011, it’s an ambiguous time with a lot of wiggle room. I treated the statement exactly as it was said, a projection based on the current information with the knowledge that we’re still learning new things. Both sony and us as consumers.

So please, keep asking for a date that you’ll cry when it’s missed because Sony doesn’t know when it’s ready right now. The only way for them to give a reliable date is if it was already tested and they were confident in bringing it up.

  • hopefully up sooner than later i am just hoping it is up before uncharted 3 comes out

“@244 – with regards to your response to king, Sony *DID* say 3 (@ least) times already when PSN would be up. Initially, they said 2 to 3 days. Then on last Thursday’s post, they said “one week from yesterday [last wednesday]“. A week from last wednesday would be today. Then they most recently said “within a week.”

Things change. Developments happen that may alter plans that have been set. This is why SCEA and others often do not post concrete dates. Sometimes the dates cannot be met. Thus the often used “coming soon.”

So, if a date is posted and is not met, we have people who will complain. If no date is mentioned, we have others who will complain. In the end, SCEA and other companies will be stuck in the middle.

SCEA will try very hard to bring the Network back online. They hope for this week, but that could change based on new information that has been published..

  • While this is just mere speculation on my part, I think that the reason why so many peopl like Aces want a specific date for when PSN will be up – either partially or fully – is because not everyone has the benefit of having more than one console (or even have any PC games for that matter). I consider myself lucky in the sense that I have a 360 w/ XBL Gold to serve as a secondary console, so I can still enjoy online gaming due to that, but I’m in the minority in regards to this & not everyone’s so lucky. I think everyone’s just eager for things to essentially get back to noraml, which is understandable.

  • Honestly, I can see why so many ppl want to know when to expect PSN to be back. While some of us do have other consoles, such as the 360 w/ XBL Gold or even a moderately powerful PC w/ multiplayer games, this isn’t the case for everyone. A lot of people are strictly PS3 only & rely on PSn for a multitude of reasons (too many to list here). They just want to see PSN come back so they can get back to their usual routines.

  • Patrick Seybold:

YOU – or whoever is giving you the information – LIED to us!!!

    Yes, flat out *LIED*!!!!!!!!!

You said PSN would be back within a week (not even an estimation or a low probability qualifiers) last Tuesday. It is now a week and the PSN is not back up yet! What gives?

You said, on April 26th (Tuesday), in the post “Update on PlayStation Network and Qriocity,” and I quote:

“We have a clear path to have PlayStation Network and Qriocity systems back online, and expect to restore some services within a week.”

Then again in “Q&A #1,” April 27th, (Wednesday):

“and we expect to have some services up and running within a week from yesterday.”

    GIVE. US. A. DEFINITIVE. DATE.

    How hard is that??

Tons of people, myself included, got a lot of trophies that they want to sync before something happens to their PS3. No one wants to sit in front of their PS3’s and tries to log in all week. NO ONE. Stop deceiving us with false dates and give us a definitive one. I have other consoles but I, amongst others, need to sync their trophies.

P.S. This is not directed at you personally, Patrick, but at the people who are giving you this misinformation.

  • @toast > i know more than you think know about government have served inthe navy 12yrs and also had a job in government for 5yrs. SO thank you for assuming of what i know and dont know about government?

  • Even with me, despite the fact that I have a 360 w/ XBL Gold, I’m still rather eager to see PSN come back w/ all the stuff that comes w/ PSN – PSN Store, online gaming, etc. Why? Because, although I do like my 360, the PS3 is my preferred console w/ the bulk of my games & misc. content being for that system. Also, some of my favorite games for the PS3 are either multiplayer-only or have wonky DRM that require being logged into PSN. Lastly, there’s some videos that are sold on PSN that I buy on a regular basis (such as G4’s Xplay & AotS) that are only available on the store for a limited time.

  • Close shop Sony. You’ve failed way too much this gen. This is the nail in the coffin for you. Just give up.

  • “We have a clear path to have PlayStation Network and Qriocity systems back online, and expect to restore some services within a week.”
YOU LIED TO US!!! YOU LIED TO US!!! YOU LIED TO US!!! YOU LIED TO US!!! YOU LIED TO US!!! YOU LIED TO US!!! YOU LIED TO US!!! YOU LIED TO US!!! YOU LIED TO US!!!

  • @buttz I wasn’t aware serving in the Navy taught you international law. If so, they’re doing an absolutely awful job at it. Working for the government is a long, long, long way to understanding international law. Which is immensely complex. Japan can create whatever law it wants, that doesn’t mean a hacker in say Germany, America, Russia, Chini, or anywhere else is subject to it.

The US congress can put up all the fight it wants, it has no control over japan. The best they can do is go after Sony of America since it is within their jurisdiction.

@Movie I have no misconception over why people want a date. It’s not a mystery, I just enjoy the humor of post like yazter, crying over missing dates while begging for a date. If asking for a date does nothing but give you grief, why ask for one? Why use a week old post when we’re the lastest information says week? when this week is not over.

  • 27 april: blog.us.playstation.com/2011/04/27/qa-1-for-playstation-network-and-qriocity-services/

Q: When will the PlayStation Network and Qriocity be back online?
A: Our employees have been working day and night to restore operations as quickly as possible, and we expect to have some services up and running within a week from yesterday. However, we want to be very clear that we will only restore operations when we are confident that the network is secure.

  • “We have a clear path to have PlayStation Network and Qriocity systems back online, and expect to restore some services within a week.”

  • Gary, can you tell me what the word Expect means?

If I said I expect you to dodge this question and you actually answer it, does that make me a liar?

KEEP THE CRUISE CONTROL ON THOUGH BRAH.

  • its 6 pm..psn is STILL DOWN..and im on my way to get MOTORSTORM: A ..SMFH. I know this network is free and i know it takes time to fix..but seriously two weeks of no online..is alil stressful – its like having a Lamborghini and waiting for the car shop to mail you the key! WE NEED PSN ASAP! and dont ever let this happen again..SERIOUSLY! I was just getting the hang of Socom 4 online..and i have yet to try the KING OF THE HILL on MORTAL KOMBAT! >:O

  • Well, “expect” really means to look forward or most likely to happen.

In this case, it’s just politics and usual corporate BS tactics. They were just trying to get people to calm down. When the PSN wasn’t up and running this morning (eastern time), I thought maybe it was because California was 3 hours slower than where I live. So I waited and waited…

I just tried to see if it works now and it doesn’t.

  • This whole situation is like you winning a contest and “expecting” to receive like $500,000 and a new entertainment system “within a week”…and not getting it after the 7th day.

  • expectation:

    1. General: Presumed degree of probability of an occurrence.

    2. Statistics: Average probability of a chance occurrence.

  • so don’t ever let it happen, but please take shortcuts to get it up and running?

and no this whole situation is like having the psn be down because of extreme circumstances and a company working with a lot of unknowns doing it’s best to give customers information.

As cyberfreak quoted, they had the goal and intention to release within a week from yesterday but clearly stated they would not rush things for the sake of hitting that date.

  • two weeks tomorrow.. right? :(

  • i expect to go at ebgames tomorow and buy a XBOX 4gb at 129.99$ in sale until may 12
and i expect to be able to play online. LOL

  • Yeah yeah let’s not get into semantics.

They probably lied about “expecting: it to be back within a week (i.e. they didn’t actually expect it). That is as just big of a lie as saying PSN would be back by today.

Once a liar always a liar.

  • lied about “expecting” it to be**

  • @ yazter

playstation is the only console that you need to understand everything by yourself because every staff employees dont even know what is a playstation 3. if you ever call thee 1800 sony # you know what i’am talking about they know absolutly nothing, they have to ask the supervisor every questions you ask cause they just dont know nothing at all…

now that you fully understand that SONY ONLY DOES RANDOM, you are supposed to know BY YOURSELF
that they are a buch of people that just “translate COPY PASTE” what SCEI give them and possed LESS INFORMATION that WE HAVE.

so please stop asking them for an answers. THEY DONT KNOW, nobody in that entire compagny know something…

  • One more thing:

If I’m “expected” to be in court tomorrow, I will not go because, hey, they “expected” me and didn’t say it definitively. Right? I can use Sony’s terminology as precedent, lol.

Anyone who uses ‘expect’ and then fails to meet said expectation, especially for a company that is trying to win back a lost trust, is “expected” to be berated and criticised. Because if Sony doesn’t meet the expectation, the company will look bad and incompetent.

You know what happens when someone is “expected” to do something yet fails to do it before the deadline/time frame? They come and say why he/she couldn’t do it within said time frame. That’s the normal thing to do.

You see, to expect somethng done by a definitive date, especially when using something like “we have a clear path,” it means that it will happen unless something goes wrong. And what went wrong? Come and say it. Give us the reason you did not meet the expectation.

  • There is no semantics, an expectation isn’t a certainty, it’s a probability. A probability as we’ve seen that wasn’t met. Life rarely goes as you expect, you find that out when your life involves more then school and chores.

You weren’t lied to, you simply didn’t take the time to grasp what was said and made your own assumptions.

  • Personally speaking, I just wish that Patrick Seybold (who, for all intents & purposes is Sony’s “face”/spokesperson on here) would just take the time to read some of the comments on here, confer w/ his higher-ups, then address our questions/concerns above & beyond the response to #17. By the looks of things, the longer it’s delayed, the more upset people get

  • I never stated there weren’t consequences to failing to meet expectations, but again coming from someone who took “we expect it within a week” as being lied to when that expectation wasn’t met, I can’t say I’m surprised that you still don’t grasp reading.

Also *spppt* did you know people do miss court dates? Because sometimes it’s simply not possible for them to be there, sometimes they’re simply neglect, and sometimes it’s for other reasons.

Expectations change, the latest word you have is a press release on May 1st stating sometime this week. Which wouldn’t you know, isn’t over yet. And if that expectation isn’t met we’ll get a new announcement saying a new general time period.

  • MAN I HOPE SONY KNOWS WHAT ITS DOING! COME ON SONY YOUR GONNA LOSE ALOT.. WAIT TONS OF CUSTOMERS BECAUSE OF THIS! I HOPE YOUR READY! THIS IS LIKE ´´THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM´´!! MAN.. I JUST READ THE WHOLE XBOX PROBLEM AND SORRY IF I SAY THIS BUT I THINK XBOX DID A BETTER ´´WELCOME BACK´´ THING THAN SONY´S GONNA DO!! I DON´T GO WITH MICROSOFT BUT I THINK MICROSOFT DID A BETTER ´´APOLOGY´´ THAN SONY IS GONNA GIVE!! AND THE PS+ THING IS JUST A ´´PUSHOVER´´ SO SONY INFATUES PPL TO BUY MORE PS+ SUBS!! WHAT ABOUT WHEN IS OVER THE PS+ 30 DAYS FREE? HUH? HUH? OH… I KNOW WE WILL LOSE ALL THE THINGS THAT WE GOT FOR FREE!! YAY!! YAY!! I THINK THATS RUDE FROM SONY!!! FOR THE 100 MILLION DUDES!!! NOT JUST ME!!!

  • yeah they pushed the “expected” date (3 may) for an other “expected” date (7 may)
in the official tokyo press conference this last weekend.(may 1st)

  • Okay this is some real bullcrap, no lie. Are we going to get our PSN back anytime soon? Or do we have to wait another damn week just for you to “enhance” the security, while really you all are just being lazy and doing nothing?

  • I thinl that it’s safe to say that it’s their idea to “enhance” security to have a Furbie stand on guard by the servers! LMFAO! I jest, of course…

  • they should have said SUPAAA ENHANCED SECURITY!! LOL XDD

  • My thoughts exactly. I seriously want to go to their main office one day and slap some sense into their loafing self.

Yea i read on a webpage that said that MAYBE JUST MAYBE WE´RE GONNA GET PSN tomorrow! pfftt… hope they don´t lie to us…. ONCE AGAIN!!!

  • but seriously The_Blue_Raven
