Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon: RavagersEarth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon: RAVAGERS

CLASSIFIED: Recently, Intel managed to intercept and partially decrypt a series of Ravager burst transmissions. The following brief has been pieced together from these fragments and accuracy is questionable.

The Ravagers are an insectoid race, originating in the distant [No Translation Available] system, far beyond currently detectable exosystems. Long capable of interstellar travel, they left their home planet, [No Translation Available] after resource depletion, atmospheric degradation, and increased solar activity began to render it uninhabitable and the majority of their kind were wiped out. This period is described as “the Great Culling”— a period when all weakness and mercy were purged from the Ravager race. (Apparently, the more militant factions in Ravager society helped in this “Culling”.) The survivors boarded enormous ships and left their dying planet. Probes were sent out in vast numbers to locate and analyze habitable planets. Extremely advanced genetic seeding techniques allowed the probes to deploy virally distributed Ravager genetic material to planet surfaces, where native lifeforms would begin a rapid process of mutation into Ravagers, wiping out competing lifeforms and ultimately becoming a part of the Ravager Hive Mind, a group intelligence spanning multiple galaxies.

As far as we can tell, Earth is one of a very few planets where the genetic seeding did not initially take root for some reason. It is considered a prime candidate for a new Ravager homeworld and has become the target of a sizable Ravager Attack—consisting of enhanced (and successful) genetic seeding efforts and the arrival of a sizable Ravager assault force.

Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon: WOLF SPIDER

Wolf Spider

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Approximately 10 meters in diameter (including its legs), the Wolf Spider appears to be of terrestrial origin—an enlarged mutant variant of the common wolf spider. They appear to retain the strong hunting instincts and abilities of their smaller kin as well as keen eyesight and enhanced webbing delivery.

  • Webbing: Effective at range
  • Bite: Effective in close quarters

BEHAVIOR: Sporting powerful jaws, a devastating jump attack, and the ability to fire movement-hindering webbing, the Wolf Spider is a formidable foe. It uses its ranged web attack to slow down its prey, and then rapidly closes in by either jumping or running. When in range, it delivers a punishing bite. Unlike common terrestrial spiders, these Ravager-enhanced Wolf Spiders are not solitary hunters—they tend to hunt in packs.

Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon for PS3: TICKS

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Ticks are the smallest of the Ravagers— about chest height to the average Trooper. They have a bulbous yellow and orange abdomen and resemble either a terrestrial tick or spider—although the fact that these creatures only have six legs seems to indicate that they are related to neither species. It is theorized that the caustic explosion produced by the Ticks is the result of some sort of internal chemical reaction.

  • Corrosive Acid Explosion: Effective in close quarters

BEHAVIOR: Ticks, whether spawned from a Bomber Spider or are what Intel is calling the “free range” variety, select a victim and pursue. Once they have gotten close to intended target, the Ticks jump toward that target and attempt to latch on to the target and explode in a burst of corrosive acid. Bomber-spawned Ticks seem “programmed” to explode after a fixed period of time. The free range variety seems to lack the timed fuse.

Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon for PS3: Bomber Spider

Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon for PS3: Bomber SpiderEarth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon for PS3: Bomber Spider

Bomber Spider

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: The Bomber Spider is an enormous arachnid and is the largest organic Ravager spider encountered to date. It features pronounced mandibles and a pulsating, pockmarked golden-orange abdomen, with rather stocky, spiny legs. With a diameter of approximately 20 meters (including its legs) and height approach 10 meters, it is an imposing presence on the battlefield. Despite its organic appearance, it should be considered a hardened target.

  • Mandibles: Effective in close quarters
  • Targeted Tick Launch: Effective at range
  • General Tick Spawn: Effective at close and medium range

BEHAVIOR: Although the Bomber Spider lacks the agility of the smaller Wolf Spider, it is capable of rendering a significant area quite dangerous. The Bomber continually spawns or launches Ticks, which seek out any and all targets in the area. The higher volume Tick spawns seem to be fairly short range in nature, but the Bomber also has the ability to launch smaller clusters of Ticks at a much greater range. The Bomber has a powerful bite attack and a tendency to charge at selected targets with surprising speed.

Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon for PS3: Daddy Long Legs

Daddy Long Legs

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: The Daddy Long Legs (or DLL) is structurally similar to the terrestrial arachnid it is named after. However, this Daddy Long Legs has a leg span of over 150 meters and a body the size of a house. It is entirely metallic, feature two main Ravager sensory “eyes” on the front of its body, and multiple smaller red sensors studding its legs. A large iris-like deployment hatch is located on the underside of the DLL.

  • Lasers: Effective at range
  • Plasma Blasts Effective at range
  • Swarm Enemy Deployment: Effective at range

The Daddy Long Legs might appear to move slowly, but its large stride allows it to cover ground fairly rapidly. The Daddy Long Legs sports numerous lasers and plasma blasters. The projectiles fired by the plasma blasters appear to have some degree of seeking capability. In addition, the DLL uses its hatchway to drop Swarm-class enemies onto the battlefield. It is capable of deploying small swarms while moving, but can release much larger groups when stationary.

Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon for PS3: MANTISEarth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon for PS3: MANTIS

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: This is an enormous robotic insectoid creature bearing some similarities to certain terrestrial mantis species, but different enough to suggest exclusively extraterrestrial origin. The Mantis is approximately 25 meters tall, and features 6 legs and two small wing-like appendages (which may be vestigial in nature). The four rear legs are used for locomotion, while the two forelegs serve as scythe-like weapons. The Mantis is completely metallic and displays the glowing red “eye” element, which seems to be a standard Ravager sensory device or organ.

  • Front Limbs: Effective in close quarters
  • Sonic Blasts: Effective close and ranged

BEHAVIOR: To date, there have been few reported encounters with the Mantis, and even fewer survivors. Intelligence has been scant, and the information herein should not be considered a definitive guide to the Mantis’ behavior. The Mantis has been observed jumping great distances, often onto the tops of tall buildings. It uses its front legs as close range weapons, sweeping and stabbing them at enemies. The Mantis also seems able to produce some sort of sonic blast wave. Some reports have reported a focused and directed wave; others have referred to a general area blast effect.

Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon for PS3: WASP

Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon for PS3: WASPEarth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon for PS3: WASP

CLASSIFICATION: Organic, Mid-sized

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Wasps appear to be originally terrestrial in origin. They are significantly larger than Black Ants, at approximately 12-15 meters long. They are fast and agile fliers, and this particular strain of wasp seems to be extremely aggressive. They are predominately orange and yellow with black markings on abdomen.

  • Stinger: Effective in close quarters
  • Venom Spray: Effective at range
  • Mandibles: Effective in close quarters

BEHAVIOR: As is the case with normal terrestrial wasps, these giant variants attack from the air. Their Aerial Venom Attack is usually delivered while hovering, and although they might fire several volleys of venom from the same position, they do not tend to remain stationary for long. Their attack pattern generally has them either repositioning laterally, swooping over their target’s head and repositioning, diving in for a slam with the stinger, or going for a Pin Attack. The Pin Attack is the most dangerous because the victim is held down on the ground and repeatedly mauled by the Wasp’s powerful mandibles.

Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon for PS3: ANT

Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon for PS3: ANT

Black Ant

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Approximately 7 meters in length, the Black Ant appears to be a greatly enlarged variant of the common Black House Ant. Like its smaller cousins, the Black Ant is capable of delivering a vicious bite with its large mandibles. This variant also has the added ability of being able to spit large globs of venom over a fairly long distance.

  • Mandibles: Effective in close quarters
  • Venom Secretion Spit: Effective at range

BEHAVIOR: Often observed emerging from Ravager Anthills. However, they are highly efficient tunnelers and can emerge from the ground almost anywhere. Typically engage in swarming behavior and are rarely (if ever) seen alone. If you see one ant, be alert! There are more around.

Join the Earth Defense Force! Thousands of giant insects and aliens once again ravage the earth, and only the Earth Defense Force can stop them. Defend the city of New Detroit against an infestation bigger and meaner than ever before. Destroy these monsters at all costs, even if it means turning entire city blocks into rubble.

  • Very excited to play this, bring it on!

    • Thanks. You will have to challenge us in 6 player Survival Mode when it comes out. The waves of insects get pretty intense!

  • game looks like it has potential! is this a full retail game or PSN Digital release?

  • O_o OMG wth is this Game LOOKS AWESOME!!!! :P

  • I’m calling it right now. This is my guilty pleasure game for 2011.

    • That is awesome. Thanks and we hopefully will see you online on July 5th, 2011. Fireworks and Insect Anhiliation!

  • This looks cool!

  • Hopefully they put some real time into the servers we get to play on and the loading times between matchs. I can see this being a very fun game to play, I cant wait. Thank you Sony.

  • the_1st_darkness

The graphics better be a lot better than this if someone expects this to be a game people buy and not rent. The wolf spider picture looks really cheesy B rated movie quality. I would rather wait 6 more months to have a slightly better looking game that plays nicely.

I for one wonder why it is just in New Detroit, and if the regular sized insects will be playing a role in taking out humanity. “Destroy these monsters at all costs, even if it means turning entire city blocks into rubble.” – many of those insects can dig holes and escape not to mention lift objects a lot heavier then they are, and they have their exoskeletons on the outside which make it that much harder to bring them down.

They have the numbers, and apparently the size and many have the ability to lay eggs and create many more at a time. Then we would also have the aliens to deal with.

    • @the_1st_darkness… What you are pointing out as “really cheesy” is actually sort of the intent of the series.

While we aim to balance the number of enemies with the graphical fidelity, the bugs looking a little campy is completely intentional.

Wouldn’t you want know what it was like to have been starring as Dutch from Predator in the movie THEM?

  • @ the_1st_darkness Games aren’t just about graphics.

  • this was fun to play on xbox when u had some spare time on your hands * * * * *

    • Totally agree, I still go back and see if I can take on Inferno mode. We are really excited to bring EDF back to the Sony PlayStation in addition to the 360 so we hope you enjoy the game when it comes out on July 5th!

  • I thought this was an XBLA title originally? If it is, I’m sure that means PSN release and not a full bluray.

Either way, go to youtube and check out penguinz0 (aka Critical)’s commentary while he plays it. Super funny stuff lol

    • Nathan,

We’ve always had PlayStation Network and Xbox Live support, but this has been a full packaged product from day one.

      Thanks for the suppport!

  • Garbage game.

  • 1st_darkness you’re a narrow-minded idiot. You’re saying if they improve the graphics the game will play nicely? WTF?! The first few games of this series were awesome, the graphics were a bit simple but the gameplay was pure fun, it doesn’t need to have the best graphics to make it a good game.
Take your head out your ass, for everyone’s sake.

  • The first version of this game was released on the other Xbox 360. I admit it was a cheesy “$20 bin” game but it sure was a lot of fun. Co-op made it even more fun. They seem to have done some major improvements to this game which I think polishes it more and makes it a lot better…from the looks of it anyway.

Graphically this game will not compete with Killzone or Uncharted. It is more along the lines of Dynasty Warriors in graphics, meaning big landscapes without much additional texture and characters are styled but very fine details are not included.

That being said, I’m still going to get this game and play the heck out of it. Again I return to my point of this being a really fun co-op game which my best friend and I (living 6 hours away from each other) LOVE. I’m looking forward to this one.

    • Great comments. EDF on the 360 was the first US release but the old school importing folks got their hands on the PS2 version a few years back. Hopefully we see you in some online 6 player Survival Mode come July 5th!

  • Because this is a bug game and not many are out there this game reminded me of the game Spider for PlayStation 1. I very much enjoyed that game.

    • OK, so I don’t remember that game, so of course I go to YouTube it… first thing I see is a spider crawling through a computer jumping around and shooting wasps with missiles.

  • and it was a PS2 game originally, both the first games.. NOT xbox.

  • 4 player co-op! Whoo! I’ll have to convice 3 of my firends to buy this, or I might have to buy the extra 3 copies, haha, either way those insects are going down.

    • Those insect must be stopped at all costs. Even it means destroying New Detroit in the process. FYI – The game is 3 player online co-op but you can play in 6 player online Survival Mode for more insect goodiness!

  • Excited about this not so much! Bring on that resistance 3!

  • looks nice but you could have told us what it is… (PSN, full, does it use Move, 3D, price, maybe a release period….)

  • The amount of misinformation in this thread is staggering! So let me clear a few things up for you:

    1) The original was a Japanese low budget/low cost retail release for the Xbox 360 that ended up on Games on Demand, NOT XBLA.

    2) This game is also intended as a budget release, and is also Japanese, but significantly improves graphics and gameplay over the original. It’s also coming out as a budget $40 title, and should be tons of fun.

  • Correction, the new one is developed by a Western dev, Vicious Cycle.

  • Will this be available to download or will it be retail only?

    • will be retail (at $39.95) only but we do have some pre-order DLC weapons packs available at Best Buy and GameStop.

  • This is one of the games I have been waiting for all year long! I will be pre-ordering in the UK and can’t wait for it.

  • it would be awsome if this was somehow related to playstation Home

  • Turning this franchise into a shooter just doesn’t seem right. The only hope I have from this is that maybe they will make X-com UFO defense into a PS1 classic on the PSN. I lost so much time playing that game. It was outstanding. Graphics were subpar even back then, but the gameplay was tremendous. I would purchase it in an instant. I will of course give this a look and keep a hopeful eye on it but I am sad it’s not like its predecessors in the franchise.

  • All this bug killing, in this game and in real life. Who stands up for the bugs?

Seriously though, I can’t wait for the game.

  • 5th July will be the end of my life – again. This shall be 100% solo’d like 2017 was. D3, please patch the genocide gun so it kills everything please! On both consoles :)
You dont understand how frustrating it is not being able to kill dropships/vallak/mothership/walking fortress/dinomech with the G. Gun.

  • HELLS YAAAA!!!! I’ve had this pre-ordered for about 9 months. Please don’t delay it any more. EDF is gonna make 4th of July holiday week even sweeter.

  • Jim, one last thing, thank you all so much for bring this to PS3 this time around. Hope you all sell a billion copies.

    • Thanks for the great comments! We were recently at PAX East showing off the game and met many fans like you and it’s great hearing about fan’s love for the game and even getting some feedback. Hope you enjoy the game as much as us! EDF! EDF! EDF!

  • I am sorry that I wined about the graphics; that extra $20 drop ($60 to $40) means I’ll get this game. I thought they were trying to pass it off with a $60 price tag. I have never played any of the games in the series, and it just felt like a starship troops meets 8 legged freaks, and for that I apologize.

I hope they polish off the display settings, and possibly think of a collector’s edition. (extra stuff is worth the extra $)

  • Is there any chance we can abandon this bloated clunker of a website and go back to the streamlined blog?

I’ve given up even trying to access it on my phone. And I’m ready to quit visiting altogether if it doesn’t start loading a quicker.

Is it optimized in ANY way?

  • I’m cool with the graphics not being super awesome, but you’re at least rendering in 1080p natively and/or doing a 2x MSAA, right?

will the audio be 24-bit and/or losslessly-compressed to take advantage of the PS3’s unique capabilities with regard to dedicated hard drive, bluray disc size, and HDMI 1.3 support of LPCM 5.1? I want to hear Blast Factor levels of fidelity on the explosions and music :) Xbox/Wii-level MP3 quality is teh suck :(

    will there be local co-op?

    a level/map editor for user-geneated content?

  • this just looks like tons of fun to play, if theres local co op i will definately buy this day 1~

    • you are in luck, local co-op is included (get the couch ready!) in addition to online co-op and 6 player Survival Mode play.

  • So basically, it’s a bunch of people fighting giant insects?

    I’m interested.

    • is anything else needed. Nothing freaks me out more than insects and I know for some, this might be the scariest game they will ever play. Poor Arachnaphobes! They will need your help to save earth more than anyone.

  • Hmm. Not going to lie, this isn’t a day 1 buy for me. But believe me when I say that I’m interested in this game and will keep it in the back of my mind.

  • I want this game. I missed out on EDF the first few times. This is my chance.

  • wow this look interesting
    can’t wait to try it.

  • After seeing the Pesticide Gun video on YouTube, Shoot i think i will!

  • Please release it on the PSN too!

  • Will there be a demo?

  • I can not wait to play more EDF!! Will you guys also be bringing over the other EDF games that are in the works over in Japan right now? What ever happened to localizing Zangeki no Reginleiv?

  • I have never purchased a game for more than one console before. This game will be my first! I can’t wait to play Co-op with all my friends on PSN and XBL. See you on the battlefield, Brian. EDF! EDF! EDF!

  • i love EDF and this looks even better… will there still be a ton of allies yelling hilarious dialogue like “FOLLOW THE CAPTAIN!!!” “YEAAAAAAAAAAAAHH!!!”?

all i need now is a sequel to robot alchemic drive and my life will be complete.

  • Wow. This game looks awesome!. Can’t wait!. :D

  • I Have To Say I’ve been a fan of EDF since EDF:2017 even though I have never played it. Just The Concept Of Fighting Hords and Hords of insects with only a M16 is An Epic Thing Ya Know?But..Are These The Only Enemies? Why Not Put Some Cockroaches Or Bumblebees or Maybe A Boss Thats a Giant Centipede(That Boss Was Actually In The Japanese Original Release,Including A Giant Moth). This Is Called Insect Armageddon Right? Then Lets Kill As Much Variety Of Insects As Possible Right?I’m not hating on it, I’m just giving you guys some ideas. :D

  • it looks awsome my grandson and i are big fans of any bugs like lost planet. know i have to buy this game for him and of course for my self haa, there any plans for multiplayer on line, mmm, like being the hornet or a kik but spider and take on six plyrs or more have the players earn up for a bigger bug , have like 3plyrs. as bugs and 6 to 8 plyrs trying to be pest control. i would like to challenge other bugs. to see who’s the badbug in the block you member like when you guys try to make the ants fight. but this time you are not using a stick
