Enslaved: Odyssey to the West video interview

33 0

When we were divvying up the reporting assignments at E3, Duke of the SCEE Blog James Gallagher jumped at the chance to interview the team behind Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. The result: we get to enjoy the dulcet tones of two poshly-accented gentlemen talking about a game that looks pretty cool by the developers of Heavenly Sword. And here’s James:

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West is one of the most visually striking games I played at E3. It’s developed by Ninja Theory of Heavenly Sword fame and the story is written by Alex Garland, author of The Beach and the scriptwriter behind 28 Days Later. It also features the acting and directorial talents of Andy Serkis.

It’s one of the games I’m most looking forward to this year so at E3, Jeff Rubenstein was kind enough to stay behind the camera while I spoke to the game’s creative director, Tam Antoniades.

Enslaved: Odyssey to the West will be available on PS3 this Autumn.

  • I absolutely loved Heavenly Sword and believe it is one of the most underrated games this generation. I will eat up anything you feed me Ninja Theory.

    Day 1 for me!

  • Sweet! Any pre-order bonuses for those like us who plans to reserve this game? Please say YES!

  • I’m not feeling this game; I would have to try it out first. I would prefer Heavenly Sword 2; the first one was very underrated.

I wish one of the many first party studios get the job to make the sequel.

  • Enslaved is my #1 most anticipated game of the year because Heavenly Sword was one of the most beautiful games I have ever played (I’ve played it through 5 times, I liked it that much).

Ninja Theory is an amazing studio that knows how to tell a story!

  • Having a really hard time hearing the interview over the fight scene with the robot.

Other than that great video I will have to check this game out!

  • I wasn’t interested in this game initially, but I loved Heavenly Sword and the Trailer looks amazing. I’m willing to give this game a chance and it’s now on my short list for 2010/2011.

  • Heavenly Sword 2 Please.

  • I never really gave Heavenly Sword a long chance. Playing it for a few hours it never really struck anything special with me. This game prior to E3 and prior to this interview didn’t really stand a chance to be in my library. Now after hearing how much effort the developers put in to it from the level of story telling and creation of the tension and heart that this game is instilled with, I’m easily going to get it on day one. The art style and direction of it from being focused on what happens when people disappear is a phenomenal concept to introduce in to gaming. I’m mainly excited about how much effort Alex Garland really put in to the game and all of the aspects having to do with creating it. I cant wait till it finally comes out and I’m defiantly going to be keeping a closer eye on Ninja Theory in the future.

  • I second colonel007’s request. Of course, I’ve been saying it for years, so, in essence, I’m just seconding him seconding me. Good? Now that that’s all cleared up… (On the other hand, Heavenly Sword DOES stand very well on its own and a bad sequel could potentially ruin the series, so I’m kind of ambivalent on the issue, but it’s only natural to want more of a good thing, y’know?)

The footage towards the end kind of drowns out the interview. I’ll grant you, I stopped paying attention to what he was saying ten seconds beforehand, but… yeah.

Oh, right on the subject of Enslaved: looks pretty nice- I KNEW who was behind it the moment I saw the girl; it was like a signature. The fighting style of the monkey-man doesn’t exactly inspire thoughts of in-depth, strategic gameplay though. More hack-n-slash or button-masher.

  • Sucks that Sony wouldn’t let them make a sequel to Heavenly Sword.

  • meh. Announce Heavenly Sword 2 and I will buy this game. For all the BS Ninja Theory was talking about Heavenly Sword sales, which sold over 1.8 million btw, this game will be lucky to break a million alone this year on both system. Just give us Heavenly Sword 2 or DLC or something for the fans of Heavenly Sword

  • Cool and interesting game, if reviews are solid ill get it

  • This game keeps looking better and better. It’s awesome to know it has a solid story too. I’ll definitely pick it up day one.

  • This game is going to be as awesome as Heavenly Sword!!!!

  • Heavenly Sword was amazing, highly underrated. This game looks really unique and has an interesting concept, will definitely check it out.

  • Andy Serkis roxxxxxxxxxxx

Trip looks so very much like Nariko brings memories back

    Day 1 for me =)

  • You guys definitely have my attention, but may I make a suggestion? Change the title of the game. It may not seem that important and I don’t think the title is particularly bad, but just look at the titles of some popular games out there: Killzone, Uncharted, Little Big Planet, Infamous, Fallout, Grand Theft Auto, God of War, etc. The title you’re using now just doesn’t strike me as something that will gain most people’s attention. Just something to consider.

  • I thought this game would suck. I really did. But as I saw more, I started to think, eh it might be good. This shot my hype level through the roof! As long as its longer than heavenly sword, it will be a fantastic game!

  • Heavenly Sword 2 please.

  • Heavenly Sword 2 please.

  • Really enjoyed Heavenly Sword (maybe a bit short though). This looks really interesting. I like their take on making a good story working to build drama. The design of the world looks great too. Much better than the usual post-apocalyptic fare and probably more accurate as stated. Very cool.

  • LOVED HS, this is a no brainer, SOLD!!! 8)

Day one for me. Heavenly Sword was the truth, this game should be phenominal.

  • Heavenly Sword 2, Please!

Best Character/Voice Acting in a game was in Heavenly Sword. It just needed to be longer.

  • I have no doubts that this will be a solid game. In fact they have a chance to outdo Ubisoft because the gameplay is very Prince of Persia like but in an Apocalyptic setting. I expect more comparisons to PoP once the game is released I’d be shock if no1 acknowledge it. Way to go Ninja Theory.

  • I enjoyed Heavenly Sword, despite the crappy Sixaxis controls, so I hope this game is just as fun

  • Tell them to make Heavenly Sword 2!

  • This games looks amazing, it plays amazing (according to what i see in the videos).

Can we have a release date?

For EU is october 8, and for US?

  • Ninja Theory has earned my deepest respect as a developing studio and as story tellers! Heavenly Sword is still among my favorites! (Andy Serkis’ performace was my favorite!) And Enslaved looks like it’s taking a ton of elements straight from films and other top notch games! (I saw a few clips reminescent of Uncharted in that interview! Which totally is NOT a bad thing!)

I trust Ninja Theory… probably more than any developer! So, I’m totally excited about Enslaved!

  • When I first got my PS3 (a second gen 80GB) I decided to rent Heavenly Sword, given it was reviewed as being short and it was still $60 so long after its release date, and I really wish that I hadn’t just rented it. For a launch title it was visually impressive and the story really captivated, something that Ninja Theory really pulls off well. Because of these things, Enslaved will be a day 1, (or as soon as I can pull together the $60) purchase for me.

Have you stopped think which side you are really on?

  • I’d heard of this game, but had no idea it was a Ninja Theory title. I’m totally on board now. I agree with #1 above that Heavenly Sword was a good game that was grossly underrated. I love that Andy Serkis is on board this time around as well.

TIP: Since the story is loosely based on the old Saiyuuki tale, you guys at NT would earn some *MASSIVE* fan-service points if you could get Masaaki Sakai and/or David Collings to do some voice work — even if it’s just for a single line. Also worth super-massive fan-service points: get the band Godiego to do the end credits music!

  • I dont know why but i dont feel it maybe its the characters design

  • Im with JohnnyBlades. Heavenly Sword was just amazing in every sense. This game is also a day 1 for me as Post-Apocalyptic is my favorite genre. Ninja Theory FTW!!
