E3 Encounters: Deus Ex: Human Revolution for PS3

Before sharing my E3 experiences with Deus Ex: Human Revolution, it’s best if you watch the game’s debut trailer below. It’ll help answer more of your questions about the game.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is an upcoming action-RPG for the PS3 that combines ferocious first-person shooting, sneaking, and thought-provoking conversation with a huge cast of seedy characters. Deus Ex: Human Revolution serves as a prequel to Deus Ex, a critically acclaimed role-playing game that hit the PS2 in 2002. As in the original Deus Ex, DX: Human Revolution boasts a staggeringly wide range of influences: cyberpunk from Blade Runner and The Matrix, intellectual concepts borrowed from philosophers such as Michel Foucault, and conspiracy theories ranging from The Illuminati to Area 51 to the Knights Templar.

Set in 2027, DX: Human Revolution follows the same spiritual path as its predecessor. The world is literally falling apart at the seams, a murky mish-mash of unchecked technological advancement, crumbling social structures, and widespread bureaucratic corruption. You play as Adam Jensen, a security specialist for a cybernetic technology corporation, who is implanted with state-of-the-art bio-augmentations following a violent attack on his employer. Now Jensen is tasked with tracking down the group responsible for the attack. And he uncovers, uh, a lot more than he bargained for.

Deux Ex: Human Revolution plunges players into a dark, despairing world riddled with soulless corporations, corrupt governments, and elaborate global conspiracies.

Seen in early form on the PS3 at E3, DX: Human Revolution’s environments pop with detail. I spotted towering LED signs, sprawling trans-urban skylines, shimmering laser displays, and rain-slicked streets, topped off with a thick haze of grit and smoke. The non-player characters that populate Shanghai are more than a mere window dressing — they go about their daily routines, offer clues or side-quests, and throw their hands in the air if you draw a weapon. Your interactions with them are also varied: you’re able to browbeat, sweet talk, or lecture them using dialog options such as “Advise” and “Insist.” This allows for a wide variety of approaches to each conversation, meaning that your ability to read your subject’s reactions and react accordingly will be as valuable as your trigger finger.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution’s environments and characters buzz with detail on the PS3.

When it comes to nuts-and-bolts combat, though, DX: Human Revolution is packed with options. If you prefer the non-lethal approach, you’ll be able to sneak past enemies or knock them unconscious. If you prefer bloody-bones butchery, you’ll find plenty of outlets for violence. Jensen’s augmented body is studded with knives, concussion grenades, and other tools of destruction, and you’ll have access to a wide range of high-tech guns. You’ll also find many ways to upgrade your physical augmentations, from enhancing your hacking ability to using an invisibility cloak to adding heat-seeking capability to your rocket launcher. Depending on which upgrades you choose, your game experience could be radically different. Boosting your physical strength, for instance, doesn’t only enable massive melee damage — it enables you to move large objects that might help you avoid a fight altogether.

Kill, avoid, or sweet talk: the decision will be yours.

While waiting for Deus Ex: Human Revolution’s early 2011 release on the PS3, now’s a great time to experience — or re-experience — the original Deus Ex: The Conspiracy on PS2. Give it a whirl, and let me know what you think of the storyline and RPG elements in the comments.

  • looks awesome…. my friends all love the first 2 but i seemed for some reason to never play them… well till now since they were sooo cheap on steam…. cant wait to see whats the fuss is all about

also im just wondering was the PC the main platform or was it the ps3…. since you said the demo at E3 was on the ps3 i can only assume you would want to show the best…. but also my mind tells me it of course the pc is the lead platform :P

anyway awesome looking game cant wait to see this in action

    • All I know is, they packed 20 people into their demo room, turned on the PS3, and played Deus Ex for a half hour. :-)

  • i kno what im going to say has nothing to do with the topic, but who cares.rumour was that sony was going to reveal a redesign of the xmb did this happen?somone answer my question asap

  • ‘reveal an xmb at e3’ my bad

  • What Deux Ex PS2 does really well (even better than todays console RPG-FPS hybrids) is the interface.

It somewhat mimics those in Metal Gear where you get a skill/item menu on the left and right side of the screen ontop of the gameplay.

I would like to see those return, preferably freezing the action. A lost design pearl that needs to return.

  • Saw the trailer and was intrigued, read the eurogamer interview and nearly had a heart attack! Sony announced alot of FPS and FPS related exclusive content that really did not interest me this year. (can’t wait for Infamous 2)

Kinda wanted alot more RPGs this year (looking at you Namco, and Japan studios *grumble*, SE, Atlus!) not a major shooter fan. I was surprised how much I was hyped for the game KNOWING that it is a shooter. Me hyped for a shooter, thats not Uncharted, WOW!

  • i spill my DRINK!!

  • It looks very nice, ill get an eye on it when it releases in 2011

  • SONY would be smart to get a deal whit square enix and have exclusive content on PS3 only. BUT not only that….if you make such a deal, make shore that YOU ADVERTISE it allot and advertise it CLEARLY so no one misses it!

This game looks promising and could be a PS3 version of Mass Effect. Why not try to make it exclusive to PS3 and PC SONY? or PS3 only?

  • Yay… A CG trailer. …Impressive? I guess?

Notice that, yet again, it’s not Squeenix, but someone from the blog making the post. Scumbags.

  • Oh, right, and PlayStation never saw the sequel. Kind of a disconnect, isn’t it?

@Senju_Karim I’m with you- more RPGs, less shooters- though NIS did a post a few days ago about some new RPGs. Don’t let the graphics fool you- they make some great, heavily in-depth RPGs. (The amount of customization can be overwhelming at times.)

  • To those with out PS2 BC…you had the chance to buy one…also, PS2 is $99…man up.

  • @SyphonFusion u can get a PS2 for $99 backwards compatibility is a pointless feature.
i have it on my euro-60gb and used it only once, your not gonna wanna play old ps2 games with PS2 graphics and PS2 controls (especially PS2 controls suck even compared to the god of war1/2 port/remake on the PS3).

  • yay… another first person shooter. seriously thats all the ps has these days, getten old.

  • oh yeah. off topic but mag and uncharted 2 S U C K S

  • Man that trailer was awesome. I hope it translates to the game. I’m not really into FPS though but I’ll keep an eye out.

  • Imminent fail

  • Im a huge fan of the series. Own the 1st and 2nd on the PC. If you dont have a PS2 or a backwards compatible PS3, you can purchase both games from Steam. Amazing series, great story, and for the time they came out a great mixture of FPS and RPG elements. On my list of top game franchises of all time along with Metal Gear. Cant wait to get my hands on this entry for PS3.

  • Paid 5$ for Deus Ex on Steam for my computer during a weekend deal, and I love it. Such a deep game with diffrent ways to play. Great story, graphics dated due to Unreal Engine 1, exelent sound, Also pretty tricky as it incorprates stelth, some puzzle solving and searching (how to get into the room if you dont have explosives, or lockpicks. Window maby? or secret passage?) Easaly worth a buy as its cheap nowadays and it being rated as one of the BEST PC games of all time, definantly worth a buy (the ps2 version is a great port also).

But This, Deus Ex 3, Being made by Square and Edios, should end up exelent witch so far, it dose. I have my hopes up on this one. Will buy when it comes out.

  • I am very very interested in this game, but i have to learn more on it before i make my mind. When is there going to be some gameplay video stuff? I have to see it in motion.

  • This is a day one purchase just based on that trailer alone for me! And I’ve added the PS2 game to my gamefly queue too.

2011 is already shaping up to be the best year in gaming for me! inFamous 2, Sorcery, Rage, Deus Ex, Killzone 3, Batman, & hopefully Last Guardian… anything else will just be icing on the cake!

  • You guys better not mess this up like what happened to DEUS ex invisble war.. Don’t try to cater to the short attention span gamers and please make it a deep rpg like the first one was with dialog choices, a real STAT system , skills, multiple roots and large areas of play filled with a twisting engaging storyline. Deus ex 2 was dumbed down with lack of stats small areas, it really disappointed me. RPGS don’t need to be casualized.

If deus ex 3 is more like dues ex 1 and not a typical tps then I will be really really happy.

PLEASE make this a good game in a similar vein to Deus Ex 1 as that is still my all time favorite game… I will definatly be picking this up on day 1.

  • TreasureReserved

I’m hoping Deus Ex: Human Revolution isn’t just another brainless on-rails first person shooter game. That’s why games such as Halo, Killzone or Modern Warfare exist.

  • Gettin’ it.

  • looks like a good game
so its going to be like a
    metal gear sorta thing ?

  • I am really looking forward to Human Revolution. I played the PS2 deus ex game a while ago but I never got into it. The gameplay mechanics were good but I never cared about the story. It was like they lacked the technical power to really tell the story properly. I think with the power of current gen systems they should be able to do a much better job at realising the characters and more importantly the world.

  • To set the record straight, Both the original Deus Ex and the upcoming Human Revolution are developed on PC first and foremost. The original has been hailed as one of the greatest PC games of all time, and it’s my personal favorite game of all time, to PC gamers worldwide it’s the Ocarina of Time. To recommend the PS2 version for the original is kinda lame, since it’s pale in comparison to the PC version.

Having said that, I’m sure Human Revolution will look great on the current consoles, though playing on the PC will probably be the most superior option.

  • I saw a 20 minute recored vid from E3.
    HHG was there.
Alot of that stuff looks like it will make it in-game!
I forgot which show but its’s the first or second newest episode.
Can’t recall the specific time but it should be 30 minutes or so in.
But it looked slick. You really can break through walls and grab choke them. :P and the visuals were slick even with his bad recording.
