Introducing thatgamecompany’s Journey

133 7

We are really excited to officially announce our current thatgamecompany project, Journey.

Journey - Bridges

The inspiration for Journey came from Jenova Chen’s feeling that in the modern world where man has so much power, we have lost an integral aspect of the human experience – awe towards the unknown. And we can see this in our video games as well. But don’t take it from me! Here’s Jenova to talk about it more:

In today’s society, man is powerful – We can travel at 60 mph; we can fly; we can connect with just about anyone, anywhere, at anytime. But on the street, people pass by each other ignoring the wonderful existence of other beings. We are overwhelmed by the attention needed to gain and execute our own power – just like we are in most video games. While we are doing that, we can become isolated and insecure deep inside our mind.

On the contrary, when we are hiking in the wild, we become tiny and weak again. These feelings make every other person we encounter much more important and enjoyable. We greet them, giving them genuine and useful help. We might travel together for a period, learn from and rely on each other. Struggling against the dangerous nature together, somehow, makes us warm and powerful inside. (This doesn’t make any rational sense, but somehow that’s how I feel. And I’m sure many of us do.) While most video games offer the sense of empowerment in the online gaming experience, we felt the player will pay more attention to the other players if they are less distracted by the power, and the online gaming experience will be quite unique if it carries the feeling of awe towards the unknown.

In a world where the majority of the players are distracted by technology, evoking a sense of awe and mystery could be very refreshing and powerful.

To realize these goals, we aimed to create a world that feels vast and somewhat unfamiliar. And so the game begins with a character waking up in a desert, with no clues as to what might have happened before or what will happen later. There’s only a tall mountain in the distance, beckoning the player to set out and explore.

Journey - Desert Journey - Motion

As you travel through the world, you may encounter a stranger who is on his or her own journey. But we don’t want to talk too much about the online experience right now. In part, because we really don’t want to inform your own experience of it; also, because we really enjoy seeing what happens when experiences come without explanation. But there’s plenty of time left for us to talk about it in the future…

Journey - Waterfall

One thing is for certain: we love getting to talk about a new project! It means that we can’t just navel-gaze about our own work anymore. It’s out there. You’re responding to it! And it also means we’re that much closer to getting the game into your hands. So we’d like to extend a HUGE thanks to everyone who has already expressed words of encouragement – they really do help!

  • Sony needs to make thatgamecompany a first party studio.

  • Games that enspire some “emotional” connection are…rare to say the least.

Flower being as simple as it was blew me away.

    Day 1 buy for me.

I look forward to the Journey.

Having a realization about something does not mean you lock yourself away from the world, some people write books, some do paintings or artwork, some write songs…some make games.

Its the ability to share the emotional sence, the experience of trying to portray the feelings behind the intent.
Yes theres money involved, thats besides the point.

  • Seriousely, this is best game company in existance by a light year, i really hope they keep making gemes that are as uplifting and edifying like this one and flower was and avoid doing what practically every other game developer does, in churning out what they think everyone wants, but are only infact appealing to people’s lust for the canel excitement of voilence and gore etc.

These canal things we think we want, but only damages our sensabilities inside – where the worst damage can be done by the way, but games like Flower and journey seem to show an acute sensability to what we truly want, but would not “rationally” realize without experiancing and tasting it for ourselves – Good on you “That Game Company” for standing out in a an otherwise dark gaming world!

  • WOW, just wow, cant wait to see this in motion! Fantastic style!

  • SOLD!

  • Looks Fantastic! Flower is one of the best PSN titles. I look forward to this..

  • Looks incredible. I love the art style, this is a day one for me.

  • Amaizing, looking forward to this !

  • TGC i love you

  • Sony you should buy this company

  • I loved flower. Very fun, but I have to limit myself to 10 minutes at a time or else I get motion sickness to an extent.

  • another beautiful concept from tgc, the gaming industry would have been a much more boring place if it wasn’t for you guys ;p

  • I’m excited. I’ve been waiting for TGC’s next title!!!

  • thatgamecompany = purchase

  • Superstrokey1123

    SOunds neat, PSN i assume?

  • You guys have my money already…day one here

  • You guys are my favorite downloadable game makers. By far.

Can’t wait for this. The online stuff sounds really cool.

  • i will buy everything you guys ever make. you are wonderful!

  • wow, outstanding, thatgamecompany delivers again : )

we need more people making games like this guys.

  • My most anticipated downloadable game, ever! Also, I’m bying anything thatgamecompany puts out after Flower. Sony needs to support these guys in a major way.

  • Man! thatgamecompany is the king of indie games. Scratch that, the king of small games period (yes even DICE with BF1943 can’t match up or even REZ HD)!

  • Absolute genius.

One of my favorite developers and every game you ever make will be bought day 1.

  • Looks absolutely beautiful! I love how games are now looking more and more like concept art.

  • Sounds amazing and online play? I think I’ll be interested in getting this. I have only played flOw when it was free so I haven’t really played any of your games.

And as someone else mentioned, will there be character customization? I’m spoiled by all the game that offer it.

  • It looks fantastic! After Flow and Flower, you guys have won a big fan.

The art design in this game looks great, and I’m eager for it’s release. I don’t know if I want to know more about the title other than a release date. This seems like a game that I’d enjoy going into blind.

  • Looks to be something really special just as “flower” was….cannot wait to see how good this game is going to be….the whole premise and concept of this game is really intriguing; not to mention, the art style is really pretty to the eyes….definitely a first day purchase indeed….more game companies need to follow suit and come up with intriguing design and concept when it comes to releasing a new IP, considering the market is just flooded and overcrowded with over the top action, fps, etc….there are just not enough games out there like this…..other companies need to take a queue from what you are doing….that’s for sure!!!!

  • Looks and sounds incredible. TGC’s titles on the PS3 have been some of the most awe inspiring games I’ve played to date, with Flower totally knocking me out of my socks last year. Keep up the good work, and I can hardly wait for another grand adventure.

  • As soon as I saw the image at the very top of the post, I thought to myself ”thatgamecompany’s working on an adventure game? YES!”

I have nothing but the greatest respect for thatgamecompany and nothing but the greatest admiration for their work. I look forward to experiencing this game, and while I have no expectations with regards to visual style or ”gameplay”, I do hope that it will be just as striking as Flower was and as outside-the-box as flOw before it.

  • I like that the ideas that come from ThatGameCompany aren’t so much “original” in concept, but original to gaming, or rather, concepts and ideas that are expanded and grown upon that no other developer or publisher is willing to believe in or put money behind.

The idea behind Journey, from what I’m reading, is an expansion of the smallest (or earliest) of moments that a player in an MMORPG experiences, moments that they may later take for granted. But instead, with Journey, it sounds like this is the sole focus of the game, and for expansive mystery and exploration being an integeral part of the experience.

I like that. Its an idea that harkens back to our childhood, which I think is a benchmark for all creative output in gaming. But not only is this idea compelling, but the art style is one that I’ve been waiting to see for a very, very long time, and one that I wish to mix and use when I get into making games myself.

  • DON’T STOP.

    BELIEVIN’.

    HOLD ON TO THAT FEELING!!

But seriously, this does look really interesting and unique. Maybe if my console ever gets back from the repair guy, I’ll look into Flower to get a feel for your work.

  • I can’t wait. Late to the party on the PS Blog about it, but I found out about the game the day it was announced on a gaming forum.

You guys are amazing and easily my favorite developer there is.

I can’t wait, I just wish Cloud would come to PSN because I can’t play it on any of my computers. -tear- I’d pay for it. It looks awesome.

  • Deja vu?

  • I love “thatgamecompany”. If I ever wanted to be part of a game company, it would be that GameCompany (pardon the pun). I’m really excited for this game. Especially the fact that they aren’t really telling us absolutely everything about it before it comes out. It makes it so much more exciting to go and explore it.
