Dead Space 2: First Trailer for PS3

Hi everybody! I’m Steve Papoutsis, Executive Producer for Dead Space 2 at EA’s Visceral Games studio in Redwood Shores, California.

The team is hard at work on Dead Space 2, but today we are releasing our first official trailer! We are very interested in hearing what people think about the trailer as we are certain fans of Dead Space will have lots of questions. After you watch it, please post any questions here and, if the answers are not spoilers, I’ll do my best to reply.

The concept behind the trailer is to hint at one of the core elements in Dead Space 2, while also showing off new enemies, a peek at an environment, and some other sneaky things. Hopefully, fans of the original dig into the hidden stuff and new folks can get a glimpse at what the Dead Space franchise is all about: gruesome enemies and horror.

The team and I really enjoy all of the support we have been getting from the Dead Space community, and we are doing our best to create a worthy sequel. If you want to keep up to date on what we are doing, please join our Facebook page or follow us on Twitter. Looking forward to your feedback on the trailer.

  • I hated extraction, why does one of the characters say “oh jesus” instead of Alban.

I loved your first game, scary all the way up until the end. No cheap scares like that cause there not scary, it has the opposite effect.

Im looking forward to understanding this futuristic sci fi horror and what the church is all about, I hope you continue with doing motion comics or animated movies to further develop the world as you did in the first game.

Great job guys and Alban be praised!

  • I love Dead Space, The suit looks bad ass(reminds me of Iron Man) Than you have that awesome in-game HUD. The weapons are very well executed, and the BEST part about it is THE SOUND DESIGN, I cant stress enough just how important sound design is when it comes to games, DEAD SPACE 1 did this flawlessly it was masterful, the asound FX and ambiance, brought the whole atmosphere to life, and helped you experience the game to its fullest. I hope you guys can do the same to DeadSpace 2.

  • please… for the sake of the fans…. NO ONLINE TROPHIES!! us horror game fans that want to platinum this would find it annoying if we have to “rank #1 for 2 straight weeks in a row on ranked servers” to get a trophy, or some crap like that. keeping trophies SP, and then having online unlockables based on your rank make much more sense. that way the non-mp users can platinum.

  • Dead Space Extraction should be on the PS3 with Playstation Move support. Make it happen!

  • My husband and I loved playing Dead Space. There are times he would literally scream when something would jump out and start attacking him. I described it to friends as a good blend of System Shock and Doom 3.

Seeing an Extraction release for PS3 would be pretty awesome, especially if it utilized the Move controller!

The most disappointing thing about Dead Space was the audio quality, which was awful compared to other PS3 games. It would be excellent if some of the assets in DS2 were 24-bit lossless and the mixer upsampled the rest. PS3s have HDMI and hard drives built-in, so there’s no reason it can’t be done. If Uncharted can do it, so can you guys!

The other thing was the aliasing artifacts. It looked like DS1 was sub-720p and didn’t use any kind of AA. I hope that DS2 makes more effective use of the SPUs in the system for resolving those graphical deficiencies.

Lastly, I games that make me replay the same experience multiple times to get all the trophies really annoy me. (On the other hand, I am love Heavy Rain!) Unless DS2 has a true branching storyline and multiple endings, please structure the trophies so a replay is not necessary.

Thanks for a great game, keep up the good work!

  • LOVE IT. Anything Dead Space I am excited for. Please give me this game now. I want it. More gore and strategic dismemberment is what I ask for. Keep up the great work guys.

  • THE FIRST DEAD SPACE IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE GAMES IN THE PAST 5 YEARS.

  • very interesting trailer and thanks Steve for your previous replies. Learned a lot about this game by just reading the replies. I’m wondering are you guys planning of making a collectors edition. If yes then I would definitely get. A preorder bonus is a good idea too.

  • First off I’ll like to say I really enjoyed the original Dead Space. It is so far my favorite survival horror game of all time. I’m sure Dead Space 2 will take its place.

Anyways I myself am VERY pleased to hear about competative MP in Dead Space 2. I prefer MP over SP any day. I still play the SP and get all of the trophies most of the time, but MP is where it is at for me. SP just doesn’t last as long as MP can. I’m really hoping you guys pull a thing like ND did. Make an AMAZING singleplayer only game then make a sequel with a better single and an AMAZING MP component.

One suggestion I have though is that you guys some how get a beta out there for the public to test. That way more glitches you guys can actually see what people think about your the MP experience and you’ll be able to change anything that the majority think should be changed to make the game better. I’m really hoping the MP in Dead Space 2 is ground breaking, like Uncharted 2 MP was.

  • I read in the Game Informer debut that you guys were actually going to make the sequel less scary because some people were too scared to play. I hate that you guys are gonna turn down the terror If I was a game developer making a horror game hearing that people were too scared would tell me that I did a great job.

Anyways this looks very cool, Dead Space brought the fear back in to video games.

  • Hey Jeff or Sid Vicious, could you guys add this trailer to the PSN store. I’m sure other fans would like to download this trailer to keep them excited. thanks

  • Please tell me (Judging by the cosmetic part of the Trailer) that Issac doesn’t have a monster inside of him. We have too many protagonists turning into the very same things they’re fighting. However, this should be good. I hope it’s darker then the first.

  • i love the first DS2..it came from the left field, no one expected it to be a great game (for me anyways) specialy when around that time EA is not that known to have great games (except for known games) and when the survival horror genre is (depends on what view you have) either really growing stale and/or doesnt feel like its offering anything new..RE5?!!puhleeasee!!..

anyways if the ingredients are still there im gonna get this on the first day…hope its longer this time and dont take the RE route, dont be too action’y pls!!..im not sure if i want multiplayer on this one, i dont mind having one though, but i cant help but feel how its gonna go about and i hope it doesnt rob the experience of the atmosphere and immersion in/of the game..

  • I’d just like to say well done on the first dead space, greatest scifi/horror to date by far & thats really saying something!
I’m a firefighter, brought ds to the station one time to play it & 5 other firefighters brought it the next day after seeing how intense it was. Really hope you guys havn’t drifted too far from the original formula as it was flawless! Only thing i’d like to see more of are ever so slightly less repetetive mission starts & finishes, & hopefully a zoom feature with at least 1 weapon. Also i’d like to ask, can you upgrade & change suits still?

    • Thanks for being a firefighter, you guys are awesome and do a very important job.

You will still be able to upgrade weapons / tools and your suit.

Glad you enjoyed the first game.

  • There only two question I have about Dead Space 2:

    1. Will we be able to carry over any items from Dead Space to Dead Space 2? IE: credits, healths and what not?

    2. Will the new necro still require vary tricks to kill them beside cutting them apart? like that heavy armor one from Dead Space?

    • Thanks for the qustions.

      1. Nope, DS2 takes place 3 years after the original game. Carrying things over would not make sense, don’t want to go into detail as that spoiler territory.

      2. Yep, we have even more tricks up our sleves as it pertains to strategic dismemberment and the way you carve up the Necromorphs.

  • Oh, please tell me there will be some kind of melee tool in Dead Space 2. Getting up close to necromorphs was always a bad idea in the first game, I only did it to be cocky, but I look forward to dying many a gruesome death up close and personal in Dead Space 2.

  • Love this game and definitely looking forward to it. I could not play this game at night for the life of me. i did it once and the nightmare i had was a little too much to warrant me playing the game at night a second time. Great job for almost making me wet my bed!! :-p

  • I absolutely love the original Dead Space and it’s good to know that you guys are carrying over the atmosphere from the first game. I’m very interested on how you guys can improve upon the first game and I overall feel at ease after watching this trailer.

Interesting take on Isaac’s helmet. I’m guessing it’s an ideal feature for him to have because he talks now. Instead of pulling off his helmet repeatedly (which can look annoying, even when I’m not the one handling the helmet) he can just remove it in this new way.

Are you guys tweaking the upgrade system or just plain carrying it over? You don’t have to consider covering the tweaks (if there are any). Just a simple yes or no.

I look forward to another wildly enjoyable Dead Space game and hope you all continue to have fun creating it. Best wishes.

  • Absolutely fantastic job on Dead Space.

I did heard that you will have Multiplayer involved for Dead Space 2?

A lot of games today sacrifice great single player just to add in online aspects. I hope this is not the case in Dead Space 2..

Am sick of 5-6 single player games and Dead Space was perfect example how to do a proper, lengthy single player with fantastic atmosphere and good story. ;)

  • Hey Steve, I got a couple questions for you…my first question is about a possible pre order bonus possibly added for Dead Space 2? Also I have read alot about a Dead Space Extraction port coming to PSN maybe when the playstation arc comes out, I think that would be great for all dead space fans and new ones. Thanks Steve..keep up the horror!

  • Just…Sexy…

    Love the Horror and Gore!

  • I am a person who loves to scare the hell out of himself. DS1 did just that and I dumped my girlfriend for 2 days because I had to replay the game once more..lol!! You have covered pretty much anything I wanted to know, I have only this question.

Will Issac gain any form of advantage in DS2 if the player has completed DS1?

I just think it would be a novel idea.

  • CaptainSasquatch

Are there going to be another six issue comic by Johnston & Templesmith, and another animated film leading up to the game? I loved the whole concept of it. It was different from other companies that made comics after the games were released. It was a cool concept and well worth it.

  • I heard that you guys weren’t going to release a PC version of the game at the same time as the console ones. I know its probably not that simple, but I think a lot of people, including me, will be really disappointed. If you have any say in this decision, please, please don’t make us PC gamers wait. Nice trailer, by the way. Very artistic.

  • I’m not a fan of horror games, but I’ll pick up DS1 just to understand the story and get used to horror games.

  • Ok well I am up till 4 in the morning ha and found myself translating background words in the Dead Space 2 main site (dont know what they mean!) But I also just translated the final message in this trailer……..What does it mean…..
    Reborn as one 614
    ??????????????

  • My question is if you can enlighten me at all on “Reborn as one 614” text?
or is it one of the wait-and-see things…..lol

    Make us whole again

  • so i bought dead space & dead space extraction the first day they came out. i have to say they are my favorite games ever!!! i really loved the trailer too! ive been so anxious to see something come out. so i had some questions!

    1) is it true that the team is working on multiplayer! if so, what were some of the ideas the team has been working on?

    2) will ds2 give us insight about altman, the black marker & how unitology plays in dead space?

    3) will you also tell us about how the necromorphs first came to be?

    4) will lexine & the others play a big role in ds2?

5)ive heard so many rumors on a live dead space movie. is that true?

im looking forward to ds2 & any other future products!

  • an-inFamous1337

Thank you very much for this great game, Steve.
I played the first one and enjoyed every single bit of it.This game is the best horror game i have experienced in a while its on the top of my horror game list.
    I have a question:
    1) Will we be seeing Nicole again? as i heard a voice that was close to hers in the Dementia trailer. So will it be just her voice or will Isaac see her and be able to talk and communicate with her.
2)Will there be more audio logs and video logs because i really enjoyed them and hopefully there won’t be cut scenes as i loved the interactivity without putting the joypad down.

Awaiting you responses, thanks in advance.

You guys are doing a great job with this IP keep the good stuff up.

  • First off thank you everybody at Visceral Games. I loved the first Dead Space, it was so fun and really scary. This was the only game that had me on my edge of the seat because you never knew when a enemy was coming. The best times is when they come up so quietly and attack me. I loved it! I also bought the Blu-ray movie that was awesome!

Also i had a question. This was a way while back, but did you guys let the tv show True Blood try out and play Dead Space: Extraction? Like i remeber seeing the mom of the one guy playing it on wii. But what was funny was that it wasn’t even out yet when the episode came out. Lol I knew it was definitely Extraction when they were playing it!

I can’t wait till the Novel and Dead Space 2 comes out!(I hope there is a special edition!) Its looks sick! Keep up the good work everybody!

  • Wow, I’ve played alotta games in my 29 years of life…but Dead Space has to be the best, it felt like I was manipulating the course of a movie. The horror, the action, the storyline was all in a perfect balance. Dead Space 2 is looking forward to bring you all this & much more. Isaac with a voice, being able to witness the necromorph infection first hand. Things like these will evolve the Dead Space we all know & love into one hell of a Game of the Year worthy experience. I’d love to see this game get a well deserved award(s). Best of all, it might come out in December, my birthday month. And this game will be the perfect birthday gift from Visceral Games. Give it your all guys, I’m pretty sure DS2 will be the game to be talked about for years to come when anybody hits the topic: “Best horror game ever”. Thank you Visceral, yours truly: EJ Cruz (Super Fan of DS)
