The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.
In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.
Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;
- Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
- Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
- Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
- Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

OK THIS is VERY ANNOYING. SONY Is KEEPING us QUIET!!! ME and other friends have put up comments on here and the forums and they’re not here anymore. ALL WE”RE SAYING IS FACTS!!!
I am not spoiled i am ticked off about this system update. WE ALL ARE!
I hope it’s true cause most here need a reason to [DELETED] at sony,ps where the [DELETED] is Blazblue you corporate [DELETED].
I have been a loyal customer to sony since 1999 . I ‘m really thinking about going over to the dark side ‘x-box 360’
>> thank god Sony opened the new “share” site, which they are obviously listening
Up until now nothing has surfaced from that. Another marketing joke while Sony is smacking us in the face with FW 3.21. It’s so sad when you see that the brand you once really loved is treated like this.
@2981 DARKJAK567:
It certainly is moments like these that make one think about how fun it would be to play Forza or Mass Effect.

MSFT has their crap too. Overpriced everything, and quick to ban or disable XBL. Both companies have too much control over hardware that YOU purchased, using their software as a coercion tool to get you right where they want you.
The PS3 was never truely hacked thanks in part to the fact they already allowed people to run their own code via Other OS.
As soon as they remove that capability, they ask for the real hackers to start looking for ways to replace that capability, in the way of Custom Firmware.
After that, it’s only a matter of time until the less skilled piracy hackers use what the homebrew/CFW hackers made for their pirating ways.
Sony is signing their own death wish by removing Other OS. Nobody cared about CFW because we could run Linux already. The only thing Geohotz even did was find a way to get unrestricted access to the processors in Other OS. That did not transfer over the the Game OS.
As soon as they start looking into the Game OS for flaws so they can get Other OS back, ISO loading will begin.
tl;dr, Other OS is the reason piracy doesn’t exist on the PS3.
This is [DELETED].
This had better be a joke. I currently don’t use this feature but I had considered it when buying the console I even downloaded the other OSs for it so that someday I could use the feature. I’m not sure if its legal to remove this feature or not but they did advertise it when the sold the system so removing it should be illegal. Even if removing this feature isn’t currently illegal it should be. I personally REFUSE to update until they keep the other OS. This is stupid it has nothing to do with our security it has to do with theirs, and on top of that the so called hack by geohot required opening the console and modifying it. It would be like disable the disk drive on a ps2 because someone made a mod chip. And I agree with post 2968, this move will only hurt legit users, and will cause cfw to be made the thing there trying to avoid by implementing it. VERY poor move. Hope it is an April fools joke, if it wasn’t you might want to consider making it one since the majority of the comments I read opposed the update.
when I click on Share for facebook it shows this in the box:
QUICK UPDATES // SonyPlayStation: PSN Maintenance: Between 1am and 5am (Pacific) tonight, users may encounter some difficulty signing in due to PSN maintenance. // PSB on Twitter
anyone else notice?
I love how the “supporters” of this know exactly how many people used this feature, like they’ve been monitoring everyone’s usage spouting things like “00000.1% even knew about this feature or even used it” Well I have a statistic for you, 90% of statistics are made up on the spot.
Also the kiddies on here saying ” Well if you want to run Linux use your PC” Show me how to CBE Dev on a PC.
But why do I even bother asking,already I bet a hundred trolls are on Google looking up CBE, then to come back spouting like they know it all when they probably couldn’t program their way out of a lunchable. . .
Let the flaming commence. . .
@ zero666 do you really think he runs around acting like that in the real world he’d be dead by now or at least beaten senseless
I noticed
you guys do realize that this is a GAMING console and not a COMPUTER right? Go use a computer if you want to use anything that the console doesn’t support..
sweet. another one
@2994 — that’s no excuse for them to remove this…
WOW this blog has been going on for two days
@2997 I know… it’s probably going to go on until OtherOS support comes back…
Lisax4156 do u even know what we are talking about.
3000? That’s a hella lot more than the usual 5 that the blog gets. Sony’s got some ‘splainin’ to do!
It may be a gaming console, but it’s still useful for software development…
You guys also realize sony has the right to change whatever they want per the Playstation user agreement that you all agreed upon playing the console:
11. MAINTENANCE AND UPGRADES
From time to time, it may become necessary for SCEA to provide certain content to you to ensure that PlayStation(R)Network and content offered through Playstation®Network, your PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system or other SCEA-authorized hardware is functioning properly in accordance with SCEA guidelines. Some content may be provided automatically without notice when you sign into Playstation®Network. Such content may include automatic updates or upgrades which may change your current operating system, cause a loss of data or content or cause a loss of functionalities or utilities. Such upgrades or updates may be provided for system software for your PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system, or other SCEA-authorized hardware
Never buy SONY again.
PS2 Support -> removed
USb Hub -> Removed
Memory Card Reader -> removed
OtherOS -> Removed
After bugging millions of FAT PS3 on February, 29, they do what ? Nothing. Just wait 24 hours and hope systems restarts. And when this happens, they make speechs telling they have corrected the problem. How do they corrected the problem for the buggy PS3 which aren’t connected to the internet ?
But to thanks customers to have buy a buggy system, they simply remove a functionality. Again, this hurt FAT PS3.
Before this ‘update’, I was waiting hard to buy a 3D LX TV.
Did I need to tell you that you miss my money ?
SONY … Your products are bad products !!!
SONY … Your philosophy is so bad !!!
Never buy again anything labelled SONY.

WE ARE PASSED THE THREE THOUSAND MARK KMA SONY
LISAX4123 WHATEVER IT IS JUST SHUT UP
Lisa, if you list a feature on the box as an inducement to a sale, then that feature fails to materialize, that is fraud in all 50 states and the european union. A ToS you didn’t see until after you paid your money is not protection for a company that commits fraud.
Another Statistic:
74% of the people on this blog thinks LisaX4123 is a man.
Statistics….well that certainly proves it Intrinsik…
FTC/Consumer Rights > EULA
why are we even argueing? Whether or not you use this feature, theres no reason sony should have the rights to take it away…
Aspect just made the Lisa alias to get around being the outed 400 lb dude on the forum.
The next system update should be giving a lot of new features
So how did Sony get the FTC to reject online complaints regarding this? I was able to fill out the complaint form only to get an error message when I selected for the final submission.
Don’t worry, I copied and pasted it before it rejected and cleared the form, I’ll get it submitted one way or another, even if I have to snail mail it in.
Mine went through. They may be getting flooded right now.
Don’t forget your state’s attorney general’s office and the BBB as well.
Nope not a guy… Just someone who actually reads and isn’t a complainer like most people here.
You guys apparently dont’ read EULA’s. These are legal documents… Guess what? When you use the PSN, you are agreeing to a EULA as well for using their servers/networks. You guys have to agree to a EULA when purchasing games or downloadable content. Xbox/microsoft even have these. I know.. I have both these consoles.
You guys should check out the knowledge center for all the EULA’s. They are all there in writing..
You guys just dont read..
I’ll wait ’til the 1st of April and this turned to be true.
Then I’ll be sorry for being loyal to you Sony.
Everyone you submit this complaint to will laugh at you. Then dismiss it.
It is an advertised feature, but it also has proven to have security risks…Sony wouldn’t remove it without insuring they aren’t in any legal trouble doing so. You guys are SOL.
Wolverine…does your child have cancer yet? Crossing my fingers and hoping!
Thieves!!
You are stealing from your customers functionality that they paid for!!
I assume you do not need to run Linux on a PS3 to copy disks, but that you can use any Linux machine with a Blu-Ray disks, and I hope a lot more people start doing it to you!!
Lisa don’t bother trying to convince them, they are too stupid to understand. What do you think a Terms of Service is? It is a CONTRACT that will hold up. Why else would it be there? Just for show? Yeah keep telling yourself that. If your PS3 stops playing PS3 games …and there is no update or fix for it withing 48 hours…then you are able to complain.
Just filed with the BBB. I’ll try the FTC again later tonight.
@3017 — It still doesn’t make it right…
Aspect we are waiting for you to post a picture of yourself. **snicker**
Suck your face in, it may make you look thinner.
I’ve read EULAs can’t be held up in court. I’m not sure about that, but what I do know is this:
“Please be assured that SCE is committed to continue
the support for previously sold models that have the
“Install Other OS” feature and that this feature will
not be disabled in future firmware releases.
Although it’s disappointing that Sony have removed the feature from new models, It’s good to have this public assurance from Sony that at least the feature won’t be removed from older models which are already working.
Please understand that in my position as PS3-Linux maintainer
I can really only provide users with technical support for
Linux and the LV1 hcall interface.
The text above was provided to me by SCE management. If
you have any questions regarding it or any other feature
of the PS3 please contact the Playstation Customer Support
in your country. Using Playstation Customer Support will
insure your inquiry is processed through the correct
channels within SCE.

Explain the backtracking by Sony. Lie to your consumers and somehow it’ll bite you in the behind!
“The EULA does not give Sony the right to violate Consumer Protection Laws. If the language in the EULA states that Sony can pull a Bait and Switch, the EULA is not legally valid. Federal Laws trumps private contractual agreements, every time.”
