PS3 Firmware (v3.21) Update

7,437 0

The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.

In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.

Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;

  • Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
  • Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
  • Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
  • Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later

For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

  • seriously WTF Sony??

  • I love all of the people that just say that we are whining.

You are living in the wrong country and posting on the wrong boards.

Do you let all of your decisions be made for you by Governments and Corporations?

Would you buy a Surround sound system from Sony, only to have them come back in 3 years and say “We need that Center-channel speaker back.”

I don’t F’n think so….so this topic does not apply to you.

  • @LegendaryPhoenix

Removing the feature does not block the hole. Why? Because hackers like Geohot will not upgrade.

Do you know what is significant about the hole? It cannot be used to run PS3 games. What it can be used to do is examine PS3 memory. A hacker will then find an exploit in the bootup code or hypervisor, and use that to run homebrew. The exploit will run on a PS3, regardless of whether the Other OS enabled.

So the basic point is, this hole has been discovered, and no amount of updates will ever close it. So there’s no use at all in removing the Other OS feature. It does nothing to solve the issue. Sony are removing it for no technical reason at all.

  • @2524

Sadly many ppl on these boards are mindless sheep thinking sony luvs them

  • Even the hack doesn’t allow full hardware access, so games can’t be run! Moreover, they could just develop a linux app so no otherOS but part of it. I paid for it(the reason i chose ps3 over xbot). Plus, it need hardmod!

This post won’t be read since it will just get lost in the shuffle. Not to mention SCEA’s apathy to our anger!

    NO UPDATE YOUR PS3.

  • Here is one for the BBB as well…
    although a little more involved.

  • I think this is funny, Sony is just pushing hackers to come out with a hack.

I was happy that the ps3 has never had any piracy problems, but it looks like we will see custom firmware in the coming months.
Starting with firmware that allows Other OS.

  • This is ridiculous…I for one won’t be downloading the update…I guess Sony will be losing out on the future PSN purchases I would’ve made…not that they care, I know…but I have spent over $400 on there, and I know there are other people who won’t do the update, so I’m sure it will add up.

I’m sorry someone finally found a way to hack the PS3…but for your early adopters (the ones who, you know, actually spent quite a bit on the system to begin with)…it’s not right to take away features that they have been using for years now…How is this a good business practice?

Luckily I don’t play online mulitplayer..and I use the 360 for Netflix streaming (it’s just better)…so, there’s nothing I will miss about having my PS3 online.

  • Wow, not a single reply from anyone on this thread . . .

This is beyond pathetic. The whole thing, it’s pathetic.

I spoke to someone on the phone last night about this, and man, I gotta say, this is total [DELETED]. I am thoroughly pissed off.

I practically just got my COMPUTER STOLEN from me. This was my PRIMARY COMPUTER. My ONLY COMPUTER. If I am not reimbursed for this, or allowed to use my PS3 as I have done so for years now, I honestly might take this to court. This is bait and switch through and through, and no EULA can over-ride actual law.

    This is pathetic . . . I am disgusted . . .

  • The true why SONY removes Linux ?

They sell PS3 and loose money. If some peoples buy the PS3 but not for gaming (Remember, SONY has royalties on all games produced), they don’t earn any money. That is the only true reason.

SONY is the true thief. Boycott

  • ps3 are crap no games no linux.

  • I paid over $500 for my ps3 so i could play games and use linux on it. i use it as my main pc for email and watching videos online and what naught. why is something i paid for being taken away? maybe i should have bought a wii instead. ive been a sony console user sense the ps1 and i own 5 psp slim 3000s for all the money sony has made from me i think they should be giving me features not taking features away.

  • My previous comment is awaiting moderation, and since there’s obviously NO moderator participation going on in this thread whatsoever, I’ll go ahead and moderate for them so my comment can be public. Here is goes:

  • Wow, smooth Sony. I hope Microsoft steps up their game with their next console hardware-wise. Because when it comes to my confidence in Sony to deliver a great product with a lot of value with their customers in mind, this is the last straw.

  • Maybe we should all participate in that Home thing tomorrow with the Tester people in it and DEMAND that the OtherOS function be left alone. Maybe Cyrus and Amped can feel our pain hahahaha. I’m seriously going to do it. Anyone else down?

  • Hotz vs Sony article on gizmodo: http://gizmodo.com/

  • Hotz vs Sony article on gizmodo!!

  • Here’s an idea instead of trying to shut out the hackers why not just hire them like they do the indie developers. i mean think of what the psp go couldve been if they would’ve implemented half the stuff hackers were doing and are still doing on the psp 1000.

  • Funny all of you who thinks if console is hacked it is not going to make money on games.
Wiiii is hacked still rocks the sales same goes for box.
So please if you don’t understand [DELETED] about piracy don’t try to be in Sony shoes.
They simply trying to make every one on same level which is not right. I feel the pain for people who paid 500 and up dollars for PS3 and now losing one of its functions.
Thanks god I got my 40 gig and slim for same price as first PS3. Sony you are wrong and you know it!

  • All that will do Mattimeoo is get you banned, and to be honest if you do that childish crap you deserve it.

  • hello

  • You [DELETED] need to shut the [DELETED] up.

It was not an advertised featured, nor did anyone buy it because of that. I bet most of you didn’t even know it was on there until you read this.

There is no legal option here, it will not hold up in court on you end and you will waste money even trying.

There is no real benefit from using OtherOS over the PS3 default one. Your PS3 is supposed to play games, play blue-rays, play music, play videos. All of which must be either legally free or ones you bought. I get that with OtherOS you could pirate, but boo hoo you can’t. Any judge in a court will laugh at you.

  • Mattimeoo’s idea sounds good to me. Except I would have to go through the garbage to make a home character.

  • Umm, I bought it for this feature.

  • My impression of the people on this board…

“WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH SONY HATES US BECAUSE THEY REMOVE A FEATURE I DIDNT EVEN KNOW ABOUT. WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH”

  • Yes we can!

  • Ok, then leave the board. You do not care and have nothing to contribute, so leave.

  • Liar. NOBODY bought a PS3 for this feature. I guarentee you that not a single person bought it for the OtherOS. Well if you did, all I can really say is…

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA SUCKS TO BE YOU SUCKKER. BWAHAHAHAHAHA.

There is more to the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system than you may have assumed. In addition to playing games, watching movies, listening to music, and viewing photos, you can use the PS3™ system to run the Linux operating system.

By installing the Linux operating system, you can use the PS3™ system not only as an entry-level personal computer with hundreds of familiar applications for home and office use, but also as a complete development environment for the Cell Broadband Engine™ (Cell/B.E.).

excerpt from Sony’s own PS3 Open Website Platform…

  • How is the above NOT a selling point?

  • @2544

The feature is advertised on the box and is still being advertised on the Sony website.

Try to not be such and imbecile.

  • Honestly though, do you think Sony will listen to you? Protecting the PS3 from being hacked > a hundred people who want to complain just to complain. Get over it and move on.

  • Actually ASSpect of light, it is an advertised feature on the original box. You would know that if you coulve afforded one before the price drop. and yes there is very much a legal standpoint on this. The eula specifically states that certain firmware updates may hinder previous functionalities. ok cool. but nowhere doees it state that not updating will hinder anything. therefore the inability to play online or update game firmware without updating is extremly illegal. like i said earlier, microsoft cant stop u from using internet explorer just because u dont update ur windows. do some reading instead of talking.

  • So you guys are telling me that while trying to decide on which system to buy…you looked at the box of a 360 and then a box of a PS3 and the Linux option was why you went with the ps3?

    BULL
[DELETED]. Try again losers. Either way, this feature will be gone and good riddance. It was pointless and worthless.

  • You do not read the EULA prior to purchase–nor is it even offered at the store. Other OS is advertised on the box.

This is a bait and switch.

  • They did it with the PSP and its newer games and I don’t recall anyone getting sued over that so it will work for this. PS3 id guarenteed to work with the default PS3 settings for all new games, it doesn’t say it will work for any other OS. So epic fail on you part.

  • As Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) does not develop or directly support a version of Linux for the PS3™ system, SCE is pleased to provide links for the following Linux distributions that support the PS3™ system:

    * Yellow Dog Linux
    * OpenSUSE
    * Fedora
    * Ubuntu

The respective websites provide instructions for downloading or “purchasing” the Linux operating system, as well as information about installation and post-installation configuration.

I want the purchase price of my Yellow Dog Linux refunded by Sony.

  • hmmmm, removing a feature that I don’t use, nor could care less about. Let’s see, if it improves my gaming experience, which is what I bought the PS3 for, along with Blu Ray viewing, than I’m all for it. I have a PC with linux on it and never boot to it anyway.

  • I want my money back… or a new PS3 Slim for compensantion!!!

  • @2566

Great, then do not post here.

  • ‘By installing the Linux operating system, you can use the PS3™ system not only as an entry-level personal computer with hundreds of familiar applications for home and office use, but also as a complete development environment for the Cell Broadband Engine™ (Cell/B.E.).’

Entry-level PC, yeah, that’s what I dream of every day.

  • Screw you, Sony!

  • @2568

grow up and take an opinion like a man.

  • great, more morons who have not read the board

  • @AspectOfLight – It was an advertised feature, people DID buy it because of that (and many more considered it as a factor when deciding to buy it, or not), and OtherOS doesn’t allow for any piracy, now or ever.

So, congrats, your entire post was wrong and inaccurate, care to try again?

  • actually aspect they never did this with the psp. at what point was any feature removed from the psp? when the pspgo came it was specifically advertised as a different system with different functions. what fail are u referring to besides ur own exactly????
