The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.
In addition, disabling the “Other OS” feature will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.
Consumers and organizations that currently use the “Other OS” feature can choose not to upgrade their PS3 systems, although the following features will no longer be available;
- Ability to sign in to PlayStation Network and use network features that require signing in to PlayStation Network, such as online features of PS3 games and chat
- Playback of PS3 software titles or Blu-ray Disc videos that require PS3 system software version 3.21 or later
- Playback of copyright-protected videos that are stored on a media server (when DTCP-IP is enabled under Settings)
- Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later
For those PS3 users who are currently using the “Other OS” feature but choose to install the system software update, to avoid data loss they first need to back-up any data stored within the hard drive partition used by the “Other OS,” as they will not be able to access that data following the update.

Those are both instruction manuals basically.Neither of them are advertisements.2150 thx for trying
I think part of your confusion is you are constantly confused.
This had better be an april fools joke…or else I might have to get a GD MF XBOX WTF!!!!!
Quoted verbatim (copy & pasted) from Sony’s own website http://www.playstation.com/ps3-openplatform/index.html
“There is more to the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system than you may have assumed. In addition to playing games, watching movies, listening to music, and viewing photos, you can use the PS3™ system to run the Linux operating system”
“By installing the Linux operating system, you can use the PS3™ system not only as an entry-level personal computer with hundreds of familiar applications for home and office use, but also as a complete development environment for the Cell Broadband Engine™ (Cell/B.E.).”
@ TRiKkey
Just stating the obvious. I don’t need any kind of rebuttal. You keep asking where they advertised that the PS3 had Linux support. Now I’m not going to be able to find any references from 4 years ago. However, I did do my research before purchasing a piece of tech for $500, So you better believe that I knew EXACTLY what it was capable of before purchasing (and I’m sure other people do research before purchasing something that expensive).
Anyways, I’m not arguing with you over whether Sony did or did not advertise this feature. I’m saying that you are a mindless consumer who will do anything for a multi-million dollar company – and I invite you to continue bending over so that you can take what Sony gives you.
This was announced by Patrick Seybold. Shouldn’t this be announced by Eric Lempel, as he is the one always posting firmware related stuff?
Happy April Fools day. The entire internet has been trolled.
The worst most outrageous comments that make absolutely no sense which are completely obvious trolls and or xbots are the ones who say im gonna buy a 360 because of this and ditch ps3.what a joke.
funny the Sony troll accuses all others with legitimate concern and frustration, who do actually use a FEATURE as it was intended to be used and now are upset to be xbox trolls
. Could you back off and let those this effects vent? I mean seriously, it WAS a feature, it WAS officially documented as a feature. People DID use it. Sorry Sony has caused a extremist as yourself to have to come here and make believe that this is somehow a good thing. Its so annoying for you I’m sure to have to work so hard to try and cover up this BAD CHOICE.
shhh.. let the grown ups talk. (maturity wise, not age)
ones a redirect on the site FAQ … not to mention anything on their site is their responsibilty, so pages of text and manuals advertsising its ability on models older than ___ is false advertisising.
so nice try YOU.
also enough with the “you can, you have the option to just not install or use psn” … yeah right, ruin any gaming history, prevent the system from working with new games and blurays and essentially turn it into a glorified, yet still obsolete hddvd player with linux.
Its not an option or a choice, its an ultimatum … do what they say, or suffer…. and after paying nearly twice the price for the privilege to.
TRiKKey: If you dont care about the feature, than just dont post here. I dont think Sony DOES expect you to praise them for taking away the feature.
People saying, they are switching to XBox say that, because they feel, that Sony does not care about them. Those people do no longer want to give money to Sony. I know, you think you have to convince people to stay and keep on purchasing Sony products, but that is not your job.
And about being part of the advertisment:
Today also interviews given and presentations are taken as advertisments, and what do you say to this?

One of the most powerful things about the PS3 is the “Install Other OS” option.

“my whole point is it is a gaming RIG GAMING RIG that means it is designed to play games savvy??”
It was designed primarily as a gaming machine yes, but it was also designed with a large array of other features to complement it, and it was touted as far more than just a gaming machine.

“I know I am feeding the trolls with every strike.”
You assume anyone who disagrees with you is a troll. I guess it’s just not possible that any of us are actually both ps3 gamers and legitimate users of this feature. If anything, I’d assume that it’s you who is trolling. You seem to be arguing for the sake of arguing, as it’s clear the presence or absence of this feature doesn’t affect you in the least. Why bother?
@2162 … well said.
@ 2156 I do my research as well that is why I bought a PS3.I also bought a wii but that was against my better judgement.Kids an wife wanted it.I knew all of the features of the ps3.The average consumer did not and still dont.I knew about the abiltity to install another os.Did that play into my decision no!
I am arguing with the people who say this was a selling point for the ps3 hardware. It was not.If you were one of those then im arguing with you.Simply put that is false.
However I am done work comes calling
@ 2162 because the whole idea is stupid.Tell you what add me and then we can talk over any game u like.
Looks like Kevin Butler’s ads are now the company motto:
What’s this third grade? Linux?
Phew, Phew, Phew!
You want, games, blu-ray, PSN? ayayayyaya (wii boxer)
copied from Playstations website (links above)

Call it what you want Tri- but I didnt have to prchase the console to read this, and that sure reads like an advertisement to me. I know when I read that I was blown away by the possibilites and made a difference in my selection of platform this generation.
Looks like someone doesnt have a ps3.
I was just checking the blog and saw the utter crap that was being spewed so i had to speak my piece.I bought my ps3 for linux support etc.
Almost all of this is troll and xbot propoganda.I hate propoganda from any source so I speak against it.
Get back in your caves feeding time is over.
Now a Custom Firmware is being created for the release of 3.21 which will keep OtherOS intact. Seems we all can keep our precious Linux and Sony is screwed badly. With this move they encouraged the development of such a hack which will probably lead to a firmware able to play copied games.
Wise move Sony, wise move. Whoever decided on that instead of just fixing the security holes should be thrown out immediately. This was absolutely bad PR (one month after the date bug psn disaster) and went off in the totally wrong direction.

“my whole point is it is a gaming RIG GAMING RIG that means it is designed to play games savvy??”
THe WHOLE point of the PS3 is to be a “MEDIA HUB” and all-in-one “it only does oeverything” machine-
Blu-Ray movies, internet, media streaming, Linux OS, photo viewing, music center…ALL these are what the PS3 is SUPPOSED to be…
@ TRiKkey
I hate to break it to you. But you are spewing propaganda.
More than anyone else in fact.
@ 2170 it does all of that minus linux which was never supported by Sony. The only does everything campaign was launched with slim which never had other os.drop it.
goodnight
Trikey: you are the one doing propaganda.
And guess what? Yes I also decided to buy the PS3 on day one although there were nearly no interesting startup title games for me, because it supports LINUX. A decision is made of different aspects, and the “other os” option wasn’t the only one, but it was a part of it.
And if you comment or want to talk to someone, use his NICKNAME and not the POSTNUMBER, as the latter one varies.
ok busk boss get a job
also i will give you 50 dollars for your hacked broken 360 so i can play mass effect :)
@ TRiKkey
IMO, I think blu-ray, built-in wifi and free PSN were better selling points. BUT Linux was an added benefit for those who wanted to use it, and likely figured into the high price. The fact that they stripped it off the Slim to help get the lower price makes me think that. But you all didn’t pay for a Slim, you paid for the older model which had Linux capability. Now you’re OK paying all that money just to get features removed? Like I said earlier, personally I’d be pissed.
Now I don’t feel so silly waiting 2 years or so to pay a lower price. Of course that means basically that early adopters are getting screwed out of a feature. I don’t care how many used it or didn’t use it, it was an included feature. Now the “fat” will be just like the Slim, which was quite a bit less. Unless you’re lucky enough to still have the old, old models with BC. And I understand that was another feature they lied about supporting on ALL models. They also lied about PSP Go and what you can do with your UMD games if you get a Go. Sony is turning out to be the corporation that lies and backtracks to it’s customers. Makes me want to spend less in the PSN store from now on, just because this leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
btw im not exorting propoganda I am speaking fact in the face of fiction.Big difference!

“Looks like someone doesnt have a ps3.”
Who, me? LOL, just added you. If we’re on at the same time, hit me up.
“Almost all of this is troll and xbot propoganda. I hate propoganda from any source so I speak against it.”
Maybe, I don’t know, probably some of it is. Fanboys do tend to do retarded stuff like that sometimes (goes both ways though). At any rate, I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt, and there is a legitimate complaint here for those who are for real.
@2177 Those were the selling points the ability to use a seperate os was never a selling point of any kind.good bad or otherwise thst is my whole point kind of.
People saying they are outraged because sony said you can use linux on ps3 buy this instead of the competition is completely false.
@Nim… Not scrolling to see if that was you or not.Multitasking here.Alot of these posts are from xbox users and just trolls that love to stir up trouble.
Did you install linux? When was the last time you used it that required linux?
I will add you tomorrow turned off my ps3 a bit ago.
Do I get some of my money back for this? Their next commercial, “PS3, it used to do everything.” That’s why people paid so much for it when it first came out, it is not just a gaming system, but our personal computer also. I guess not anymore. Thank you sony for taking our feature away from all PS3 users, and not adding more of it. Hope that this is a April Fools joke. Please let it be an April Fools joke.
@ the people saying they’re taking xbox over ps3 because of this….
You sure are a special, stupid breed of person.
A story like this is like ^^$# to flies it attracts the worst in society. That is all and its way past bedtime.
Verizon DID get sued when they removed OBEX from they’re cellphones that already had i and yes they did lose. They advertised “bluetooth file transfer” but when they removed it from the phones that already had it people got mad and verizon got in trouble. Maybe we can sue? I doubt this is legal. They did advertise other OS. Also for those thinking “they’re not forcing us to update” well yes they are, even if we don’t we lose other features that were also advertised, like psn, movies, etc etc etc.
Ok then, I’ll wait and see.
http://www.ps3news.com/PS3-Hacks/geohot-dont-update-to-3-21-promises-ps3-custom-firmware/
(geohot on the whole “3.21 thing”)
while Im not going to try and say that Ill be buyng an xbox because of this. I am quite POed.
I will not be updating my system, which in turn means I will not be spending money on the PSN or any new games for the system. the games I was looking forward to have already come out, and I guess wont be buying blurays either. Ill continue to play the games I have, and continue using yellow dog.
but this will e the last sony product that my money pays for.
I dont like to have the ol bait and swith pulled on me.
From Spain we said NOT UPDATE YOUR PS3
lolo when i will be new god
BOW TO ME MORTALS
“Did you install linux? When was the last time you used it that required linux?”
Yes, I have YDL installed on my system. I use it semi-regularly for streaming media, and/or just general tinkering (linux is fun). I’ve also played around with some gaming (nothing illegal mind you). Some of the open source available stuff, and some older pc gaming using dosbox. It’s good fun playing some of that older stuff, that I had only experienced before on a small computer monitor, up on a much larger screen. I’ve also been curious about trying that technology to stream windows games to the PS3. Might not get that chance now, guess we’ll see.
I hope this is ‘April Fools’ joke.
Because you give me two choices:
Install – Lost useful feature (Linux on PS3)…
Dont Install – Lost access to PSN…
In my opinion this two choices is BAD!
I agree to fight piracy, but not in this way. It is more annoying than EA DRM in Silent Hunter.
Against the PS3 Firmware 3.21

People are saying not to update… Geohotz says he will release a cfw that will keep this feature.
WTF!
Remove BC, remove card slots, remove USB, remove Other OS! What’s next? I don’t even use the feature and this annoys me. You are just removing features all the time. 2 USB ports is lame enough when all your new peripherals are USB but this takes the biscuit.
What about people that bought a PS3 to use that feature? If it’s listed on the box as a feature then surely you are about to be hit by a class action suit for charging people for things you will take away later.
It’s like Ford charging you for your nice new car then coming to your house and stealing the wheels back. BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD move you’ll get a lot of bad publicity from this. PS3 has been a bodge from the start. I still like the games but you’ve made a hash of the PS3 from the start!
its not on my box…
First of all, the hack performed by the hacker known as geohot, has no potential for running retail games. Nothing has been done with it, and even if hackers do manage to do something with it, it wont be a backup loader or anything. This hack COULD allow (IF ANYTHING) full hardware access in linux(as it is in a sandbox mode where the graphics card and 6 or 7 cpu cores disabled). I use linux every day on my machine. I am very displeased at your decision sony. How about you just allow what hackers are trying to achieve. Hackers would give up because whats the point. Then we could have a truly remarkeable linux machine.
This news is outrageous, but THIS is worse:
http://www.psxextreme.com/ps3-news/6835.html
I cannot believe you sony, you have disgraced and tarnished your name, and i thought SO highly of you.
I will definately be considering a 360 purchase, and will be reconsidering my future PS4 purchase.
Just so people who don’t want to muddle through the blog can see it. Go to blog.share, search for other os and vote against this!!! I also have YDL installed and actually would like more of a filesystem size selector as I am waiting on my 640 gb hdd from newegg right now.
tell me why? why users that buy their games and movies and use your platform to play AND work (or study Cell progrmamming) must be deprived of something they legally bought
I am going to trash or sell or my games and movies and tell anyone in doubt to buy an xbox
Trikkey has to be the biggest troll in this whole topic. All you have to say is Its a gaming rig, linux was never advertised, don’t insult my intelligence and and whole bunch of stuff that adds up to “I’m an ignorant fanboy.”
Guess what, its not just a gaming rig! There are a lot of people who use it primarily as a media server with the added benefit of being able to play games on it. Sony may not have advertised Linux support on their television ads, but if you’re at all a savvy consumer you knew damn well that it had the ability to run Linux and to a lot of people (myself included) that’s a big selling point because it adds diversity to their investment. Its no longer just an expensive xbox; now its a media server, blu-ray player, Linux box, AND gaming rig.
They’re going to have to change their ads again because it no longer just does everything.. it kinda does things. On the plus side at least Sony is giving us the choice of the things we’d want it to do. We get to choose the bullet or the rope and I think that is complete bull. The people who actually support Sony doing this need to take a step back and look at whats happening.
If you’re not outraged… you just don’t get it.
Phil Harrison sure talked it up in several interviews with gaming journalists.
seeing as gaming journalists are writing for gamers to read, I would call that an advertisment.
while I do blame geohot for being the cause, I blame Sony more for their reactionary solution. any way you cut it, a fature that was in the product is being taken away. a feature many of us paid for
