Castle Crashers for PSN: Progress Report

152 32

Hello PlayStation.Blog residents. Emil Ayoubkhan here from The Behemoth. We were graciously granted access to the blog to update everyone on our progress with Castle Crashers for PSN.

I’m here today to talk about our new volleyball minigame that we will be including in our upcoming version of Castle, but before I get into that, let’s talk about the release date. This is pretty straightforward actually as we don’t have one yet. We’re looking to finish sometime this year and as soon as we can narrow it down to a specific month, we will be able to talk about this more.

Castle Crashers - Volleyball Image

Now back to the to volleyball minigame. Here are some of the finer points:

Play co-op or vs your buddies

  • Local or online play
  • From 1-4 players per team for up to 8 player matches
  • Variable stats based on character
  • Use magic attacks to place 8 new magic status effects on the volleyball
  • Cool new serving and spiking moves
  • Available AI teammates or opponents
  • Play as any character you have unlocked
  • Play 1, 3 or 5 matches against your opponents
  • Leaderboards to track the best in the land

It’s basically like playing volleyball with your friends but you get to replace good sportsmanship with explosions, magic, and weaponry. As we get closer to the release, we’ll start revealing some more features and additions. What will they be? How will they work? What will they do? Stay tuned for more.

  • How are you going to do the DLC? Will the two already released be included, and we’ll get two different packs? How will unlocking the Alien work as well, I’ve heard that you needed the alien hominid game.

Sorry for all the questions you probably won’t respond to (no one ever does), but a reply would at least be relieving…

    • We can\’t really comment on all of those questions just yet. For now we just had an announcement about a volleyball minigame that we think is pretty dang entertaining. As soon as we can answer all of that though we\’ll try to jump back on here and update everyone.

We respond to comments all the time by the way. We hope you are a little relieved.

  • Awesome game, any chance it’ll be playable on PSP as well? If I could take Castle Crashers on the go I’d buy the living hell out of it.

  • Thank god you guys updated us on this. I honestly thought it was canned. Just for a rain check…. is your next title coming out for the 360 and ps3 via same day? Oh, and please try to give a range of release dates XD… last time someone said Spring of 2010.

  • @Emil Ayoubkhan

is this volleyball minigame going to be exclusive for PSN version.

  • I’ll pick this up whenever you guys finally decide that we’re allowed to have it, but a word to the wise:

Next time you make a game, give it to us the same time you release it on that other platform. As you can see by a lot of these comments, we don’t take kindly to being treated like an afterthought.

  • Glad to hear this is coming to PSN – Good game – Should have been released 18 months ago like it was for X-Box Live…

  • I also would like to add
If this game was release the same time as the xbox 360 version, you would have had a market on the PS3 and possible more sales. Release it 2 years later isn’t a smart thing to do from a business standpoint. Think about it. If this game was release a year ago, people would have purchase it because of the lackluster content that was available on the PSN during that time period (Love you Flower, best DLC game ever). Releasing this game when there is a healthy and improved selection of PSN game, will only limited the appeal of this game. I wouldn’t be surprised if this game flops on the PSN. If it does, you guys shouldn’t blame the users, but yourself because you think by releasing your game 2 years later, people are going to bend-over backward and buy it.

    • In a perfect world we would have released this on every console known to man. Sometimes you just have to roll with what is in front of you. However it\’s on it\’s way to the PSN now and that\’s very exciting for us and we hope you get to check it out.

We\’ve never blamed users in the past when things have gone bad, so I apologize if that\’s happened to you. Also we don\’t want you to bend over backwards to buy our games or anything. We want you to be in a calm and quiet place and actively make that decision on your own. We think our games are fun. If you don\’t we totally understand and appreciate your comments either way.

      Thanks!

  • Geez, some people on here are kinda picky. Let’s look at the facts here

FACT: Castle Crashers is a great game.
FACT: Castle Crashers is only on the 360 right now.
FACT: Behemoth is making Castle Crashers for PSN with extra stuff and online that won’t be broken.
    FACT: Behemoth is awesome.

Thanks for bringing this game to the PS3, guys. Better late than never, and the fact that you aren’t rushing the game is a good thing, IMO. I look forward to buying this on Day 1, whenever that may be.

  • Thank you Behemoth!

I’ve been dying to hear anything since June when you all announced the port. It’s cool to see you guys have been working on some new cool stuff.

I may be wrong but Bethesda uses adobe flash to make their games right? I’ve learned adobe flash through a college course and was curious how some of you folks at bethesda learned the software?

  • Thanks for the update Emil! I’m really excited for this game and I’ll definitely be picking it up day one! :)

Oh & to add to what Cojirro said, Castle Crashers on the PSP would be AMAZING!

Keep up with the good work Behemoth!

  • Even if it is taking a long time, i’ve been looking forward to it forever and will buy it day one. I’ve always been a fan of Tom Fulp (who better be working on it too XD) and Dan Paladin. Always loved their art style and gameplay with their games. (Newgrounds, which actually got me really into Flash fora while years ago)

Seeing as you guys are adding more features as well, i wont be disappointed at all either.

    -Thanks.

  • @Emil
Sorry, but I played this on by xbox 360. So far, I have not seen anything (content) that would make me buy it again for the PS3. Let’s say this game release of $10 on the PSN. I would rather spend that $10 on a PS1 classic or another game instead of buying it again. I am not trying to be an azzhole or anything. But so far, I haven’t seen anything that would make me buy this on the PS3. I respect that fact that you guys are “trying your best” << (whatever that means) to bring this game over to the PSN and wish more developers would do this. However, you guys have to understand that releasing a game 2 years later isn’t a healthy business option by any means.

    • Well we\’re sorry that you feel that we\’re not making healthy business options. Obviously we would have loved to have the game come out for all consoles in every country on the same day. However that didn\’t really happen and here we are today.

I thank you for your respectful comments though and to elaborate on the \”trying your best\” quote (it seemed as if you weren\’t sure what that meant). It just basically means that we work as hard as we can and try to make our games fun. If it strikes you negatively then all we can do is say sorry and try to move on.

      Thank you.

  • Thank you all for all the great comments so far. If you have any questions feel free to ask and I’ll do my best to answer.

  • “I wouldn’t be surprised if this game flops on the PSN.”

    I would.

  • @Bashr21
OPINION (agree, love this on xbox 360): Castle Crashers is a great game.
FACT: Castle Crashers is only on the 360 right now.
FACT: Behemoth is making Castle Crashers for PSN with extra stuff
OPINION: and online that won’t be broken.
    OPINION: Behemoth is awesome.

    Your opinion =/= fact

  • I feel I should apologize Emil. I generally ask questions from left field when I get excited, so I sincerely apologize that I worded my “exclusive characters” question in such a way that would indicate we DESERVE this for the wait.

I own the 360 version and enjoyed the heck out of it…I’m simply excited to own it again on the platform I prefer to play games on.

Take your time, you have a day one sale in this humbled gamer.

  • Emil, I know your studio is small, but can you answer how many games you guys are currently working on? (other then Castle Crashers and Behemoth Game#3)

  • People on here need to calm down. Behemoth is bringing the game to PlayStation Network and although it’s a bit late, they’re trying to make up for it with additional content such as this new Volleyball mini-game.

    Now for my question.

Is there any possible chance we’ll see BattleBlock Theater on the PlayStation Network? It looks awesome and I’m sure a lot of PlayStation 3 gamers wouldn’t want to miss it. =]

  • @Emil
I think you might have gotten the wrong impression of me, and I blame myself. I think you guys are a great and love CC on my xbox 360. I am just sick of certain developer coming on the blog with “good news” in regard to porting an Xbox 360 game/DLC to the PSN/PS3. They feel as if they are doing us PS3 owners a favor by porting their games over to the PS3 with little to no extra contents (BRAID) and have the nerve to charge up full price when their games/DLC has been out on the other system for months. Then they turn around and tell others in interview that PS3 owners don’t buy PSN games or DLC (Fallout 3 developers/publishers).

    • I didn\’t have a bad impression of you at all. I totally understand your point and your frustration. We were just excited about the volleyball mini game we added and had the chance to share it with the PlayStation blogging community. No hidden motives other than letting people who are interested about our stuff know that we are still here and working our fingers to the bone.

  • btw any chance of seeing alien hominid? lol I loved that game.

  • Can you make the abilities more varied? I loved the 360 version, but I would like the characters to be a little more varied.

  • i notice a HELL of alot of bad comments on here. i don’t know much about the company but i’ve played castle crashers a couple times and thought it was great. i’m definitely going to buy it whether it’s just a direct copy of x360s version or something that x360 don’t have. Behemoth, u got my money on this game.

now Sny i have a good question and i’m sure it can’t be answered now but hey “a stupid question is one not asked” when will we hear about final fantasy 9 coming to psn?

    • Thanks. I dont think the comments are too negative at all. People just have a lot of questions understandably. Hopefully we get to answer as many as we can.

      Thanks for your support.

  • I’m glad this is finally coming to PS3, I played Castle Crashers on the 360 and really enjoyed it.

The only things that will stop me from getting this (again) will be if there is a $14.99 price tag, aswell the King pack should be included.

Even if there is “new” features added its still not worth what it was when originally released so long ago, I hope the price point is reasonable. ($9.99 at most)

  • Emil, I just wanted to say thanks! I can’t believe how many mean comments people are tossing your way above. I’m uber glad you’re bringing castle crashers over and I’m sure it’ll be a delight.

Thanks for you and the team’s hard work and I hope it does super awesome when it realeases :)

  • @Emil
That “trying our best” statement wasn’t directly referring to you guys, but developers that port games over to the PS3/PSN in general. Countless times, they have said that they are going their best, but the ports speak for themselves. When it comes to the PS3/PSN, I take those statements with a grain of salt when it comes to multiplatform developers. As a gamers, I notice a horrible port when I see it.

    • Ah. Totally understandable. Well I hope our game doesn\’t disappoint then. At the end of the day all of the blogging and comments and discussion all come down if you enjoy the game and have fun while playing. If you can say you\’ve done that I guess we\’ve done our part. If not, then we\’ll keep trying.

  • FINALLY an update…can’t wait to grab this game when it releases, whenever that ends up being. Hopefully soon :(

  • Never played the game but I am looking forward to it. Ignore the negative people and keep working on bringing us this game. Volleyball seems fun. Can we get a video of that mode in action?

  • @Emil

FINALLY! It’s great to see CC is ready to make the jump. I might just go out and find a copy of Alien Hominid for some fun. I can even remember AH when it launched on NG like 7-8 years ago! (Has it really been that long?)

Thank you, and give my best regards to Tom and Dan, as well as everyone at The Behemoth.

  • @Emil

Wow Emil! You totally rock at keeping up with comments. I Have yet to see any team invited to speak on this blog do as well. Thank you so much for that alone!

I have never played Castle Crashers before but in viewing it from vids on GameTrailers.com was jealous of those on 360 that got it as an exclusive. I was thrilled to hear that it is coming to PS3, so whenever that is I will be looking forward to it.

My only question would be is there a possibility of playing a demo before release? (for the full game)

Thanks for all the extras! Thanks for putting up with some of the commenter’s that are not so gracious.

Looking forward to it! Thanks for the post!

  • I bought Castle Crashers for the 360, excellent game!I can’t wait for this to hit PSN. I will be buying it day one to help support The Behemoth. Keep up the good work!

  • This is great news! though a little delayed :P

I bought CC on xbox (even though i dont have an xbox :P) and everytime i visit friends with xbox, i bring my 360Memory Unit(CC is on it) just to prove to them that they must buy it to, otherwise their xbox is pointless(cause CC is the only reason to have an xbox)
    :P

That said, i still love the game, and still play it whenever i get a chance… so a PS3 release (no matter how delayed) will still be purchased by me, and many others.

Now, I would prefer if you released the game sooner (without extra content) and then added some free PS3 exclusive content at a later date. We want the game now, the extra stuff later!

LAST comment.. We want more characters! believe it or not, there were not enough on xbox :P
I would like to see a Sackboy PS3 exclusive character, that would rock!!

  • With the stuff your adding to it, are you going to rename it Castle Crasher+ ?hahaaha

  • I have not seen much about this game, but a 4coop game is always welcome. I hope you will release some more infos, videos and stuff in the coming weeks

  • Hi Emil, are we gonna get The Necromancer pack and the other one included with the game or Seperate? either way,im buying it

oh and please do try to release some of the AVATARS for PSN =) PSN lacks them

  • Will buy it if it’s priced right.

  • I can’t believe so many r complaining about how long it’s taking instead of appreciating the effort this small development team is making to get the game out to us PS3 gamers. It’s not like we don’t have anything else to play! LOL cmon guys! For me this looks like a day one buy, and it’ll be a complete new xperience for me, and I’ll probably enjoy it.
One question: volleyball seems like a good candidate for motion control support….will this game support that?!

  • Wow. I never thought that Castle Crashers would make it to PSN. This is great news! It is my most played XBL game and I love Behemoth so I’ll be checking this out when it becomes available. I hope it will come with the Kings pack.

  • Gotta love people being A-holes with the anonymity of the internet. Emil, your responses have been fun to read and you seem like a great person. I have an Xbox 360 but never did pick this up, as my console of choice was PS3, so I will probably be buying it this time around on PSN.

I have a few questions, though:

    – Will video recording/youtube uploading be supported? (Like Peggle and Pixeljunk) I would love to see that.

    – Custom soundtracks?

If not, any chance you could ask the devs if there is any way to include them?

That’s all. I wish you and your studio great success with this and future projects.

  • I dont have an xbox 360 so at least I am looking forward to it. although if it were longer and had a few more items/etc. I am sure a few more people would be persuaded over.

  • Great game, even greater than it’s getting more features/modes. Any word of Alien Hominid HD for PSN? Have to unlock that little bugger in PSN Castle Crashers somehow, right? ;)

  • You have got my money Emil.
i tried it on my friends xbox once before he converted to ps3.
extra content is main reason i’m getting it day one.

  • Awesome been waiting for a while for this one. Was mad only 360 had it but all is coolio now. day one buy for me thx.

  • I’m glad to see the love shown to the development of the ps3 version. Double props for not “rushing”. I’m sold (again).

  • Lots of people are giving you guys a hard time. Don’t listen to them. I’m patiently awaiting the release of this game. Is there any other content new to the PS3 version besides the volleyball? What are the exact differences? Thanks!

  • I don’t care if it’s taking forever to port it over to the PS3, I will buy CC when it comes out on PSN. Although a $10 price point wouldn’t hurt either. :D

  • I cant wait for this game, I played it over a friends house once and it was awesome. :D I will try to buy it the day it releases but I dont know if ill be able to.

I also glad you are adding this mini-game it addes to the replay value. I will check out the volley ball game after playing the other stuff. Or ill fit in sometime. :D

Since its online and offline multiplayer is great, more games need offline multiplayer.

  • Oh yeah, what XxKillerxX869 said too.

    PSN Avatars please.

  • can’t wait for the game. thanks for the post!

  • Emil,

I do enjoy how nonchalant you handle all of the nay-saying. I’m rather amused. Back on track, I’ve watched friends play this title on ‘the other’ console and was highly entertained just in watching them.
I have always been interested in trying this title and PlayStation has always been my platform of choice. I thank you and your team for delivering this title to us and I cannot wait to finally play it.

Also, I hope you folks are doing more than just adding a few extra mini-games for us patient PlayStation folk. ;)

  • Not having a 360 I had no idea about this game until recently and I’m looking forward to buying it on the PSN when it becomes available. I’d rather have late over never anytime. I’m guess some people don’t realize what is involved with porting and game and how hard something like this would be for a small studio.
