As you’ve already heard from Eric Lempel, the latest PSP firmware update v6.20 added the Digital Comics Reader to the XMB on the PSP. The PlayStation Network comic service on PlayStation Store will be coming in December (U.S. Only). In the meantime, you can get your hands on a free issue of Star Trek: Year Four – The Enterprise Experiment from our partners at IDW Publishing. Once you download the free Digital Reader, visit PlayStation Store on the PSP and enter the following promotion code:

This code is only valid until December 16, 2009. The code must be redeemed directly on the PSP (not through PS3 or Media Go).

Yeah, I complain A LOT. I’m allowed to with all the money I give to Sony and for their complete lack of competence.
@PSN_Tokeio IW even cam out and said it was due to the servers not being able to compensate for the demand and that it had to do with the their server company
IW stated two things. One was their parent company, ATVI, who owns the server company, DemonWare, failed at their job of running servers for the PSN. In this case they were responible for managing servers only for games publishes by ATVI and they failed hardcore. Two IW stated that Sony Japan needed to turn back on the PSN presence server for MW2 after DemonWare fixed their fail. So it’s both their faults. And more Sony’s fault because they failed at creating a unified network infrastructure for online gaming. Instead they opted for the cheap route and forced the developers and publishers to figure it out on their own. This issue would never happen on Xbox Live because M$ controls it all. Sony needs to step up, start charging users for PSN online gaming so those of us who demand real servers can get some.

PSP1000 in the house — I cannot download any of the comics, even though I have over 900MB free on my Memory Stick Pro.
The reader software looks great, but having to install it from my Mac (or PC) instead of having a PSN download is kinda lame.
Now if only I could get a comic to successfully download…

Sony, if you can’t get Japanese manga on US store, here’s a alternative, add OEL manga (manga not made in Japan/Asia)

Del Rey Manga: Kasumi, X-men: misfits (Marvel collaborate with Del-Rey, so it should be easy to get this. I have this by the way), Wolverine: Prodigal Son

@PSN_Tokeio yes it might not be as unified, and they did it for cost reasons, no one is debating that. i never say IW saying anying about SCEJ not turning anything on.
as for your 360 comment, sure if it might not happen on there, but if the servers go down, it doesnt just effect a small number of games, it effects all games. just look at a few xmas ago when their entire service was down.
I entered the code and tried to download three times, and all three times it failed. The fourth time, it locked up (kept saying “please wait,” so I reset the system. Now the code says I have the comic, but it is not letting me try to download it again.
Is there any solution?

Seems interesting, though most of the comics I found the need to scroll around a bit or zoom out on.
Yup I remember that outage well. Given that was two years ago, that hasn’t happened since. Oh the other hand, Sony continues to fail at infrastructure week after week. Not only did MW2 fail but so did the PSN store this week including ALL web side authenication services. You couldn’t even log into the forums or check your profile online. After many hours of it being down Jeff posts that it’s scheduled downtime. Complete lie. I could go on and on but won’t bore you or myself
any longer. Just know that if we as users of the PSN paid for this lack of quality crap would get done faster and more effectively. But since it’s “free” we are getting just what we paid for. Crap in, crap out.

Thanks for saving the US time with those 4 codes. I’m able to download and view ’em all. Haven’t read comics in almost 2 decades- yea I’m old but man these digital comics on the PSP is pretty cool! Wonder what the prices will be now…
Had the same problem with the Megatron comic too. Is there a reason I keep getting error messages, and how can I still get the comics?

Hey sony… Is there an update on when we can expect little big planet on the psn? my psp go is desperate for more sackboy?
It lets me get Astro Boy and the other one but when I go and download Transformers and Star Trek it will hit 100% and get the 802 error. I try reenter it and it says the code is either typed in wrong or invalid. Sony what is the deal????
I’m all for this feature but I wanna know which publishers will be partners in this venture. I already see Marvel being in this but I don’t care much for them. I’m a DC fan and since Sony Online Entertainment is doing DC Universe Online, I wanna know if they will also be a part of this. And maybe a little Dark Horse. :P
funny I tried 2 of them and download them gets to 100% complete then says Activating and then get “download failed” and now when I go to enter the code tells me its no longer valid… If I go to store and previous download list they are not listed there…….
Why the hell is the comics viewer 1GB?! I will NOT download that garbage. I have a 16 gb PSP Go and I simply cannot justify using a whole gigabyte just for the comics viewing program. What the hell?
Since people aren’t getting the message:
If you’re downloading it and get an error at the end, deactivate your video/comics content through Account Management > System Activation. Then activate it again.
The comics CAN be redownloaded through the download list, but not the download list in the PlayStation Store. On your PSP, go to Account Management > Transaction Management > Download List.

I’m not really a comic person, but I love manga. I hope to see some of that available sometime.
Cool feature. This may be a silly question but there’s a comic I want to delete off my PSP because it’s taking too much space, but I’m not sure how to delete individual comics. Can someone help me out on this?
Canada isn’t mentioned on the list of countries… are we lumped in with the US like usual? Or are we out of luck just as we are with the video store?
As stated before, I will be very sad if this comic service does not cover manga as well. I know you guys at Sony read these comments, make it happen.

Ive been waiting for this since it was first announced and im so stoked! Unfortunately, im getting an error after downloading, it says ‘download failed’ and (8010A12E). Its in my download list and ive tried it multiple times.

If you are having problems while downloading the comics check message number 43, I’m having the 4 free samples without problem.
All these new features on the PS3 and PSP have me really excited! On the PS3 I only got some sub navigation icons that I could not use but now the PSP has this main XMB navigation icon that serves no purpose except to, seemingly, try to aggravate us Canadians. The US call us all complainers yet seem to be okay about getting annoyed at a grey box around your friends list or a ticker in the corner of your TV. Try putting yourself in our shoes for a second and tell me you wouldn’t feel shafted over and over again. I’ll say it again SCEA mandate includes all of North America and all we want is a little respect. Its our blog just as much as its yours.
I’m not a complainer, especially when it comes to free stuff, but I totally agree with @PSN_Tokeio. Sony is handing out FAIL like a Hare Krishna with daisies at the airport. I mean, come on… Astro Boy? Star Trek? Seriously,how hard would it be for a company with the clout that Sony has to get something interesting that would actually whet our appetites for this application? Marvel wouldn’t agree to a free Hulk comic? Really? Oh well. Not like I planned on using this anyway. Not a big comic fan and the books will probably be 50%-100% more than they are in hard copy form. That said: let the attacks on what I’ve just said begin….. NOW.
Why just the U.S? this is ridiculous, people in the U.K, Spain, Germany, France, Canada and even bloody Serbia are Equally paying customers, but the U.S get everything? this is an application you made YOURSELVES! so we should be able to get it too. Lacklustre, Mediocre, unfair and simply ignorant treatment. Thanks alot sony, you bunch of mugs.

The @PSNComics Twitter account mentioned that there may be a fix for it, but it apparently hasn’t come yet…”
Please get word out when it’s fixed.
Guys, all you have to do to get the comics to work is to go to your account management, then go to system activation, then deactivate video/ comics. After, you reactivate video/comics and then you can download the comics with no problems. I did it and it worked on my 1000.

No need to fix what is not broken. The free comic downloading issue is not an actual failure. The failure is not informing everyone exactly what is needed to set up the PSP properly in order to download the free comics. Or what to do if you encount problems. Not everyone is clearly aware that they need to activate the PSP for the comic reader. A minor issue that is easily resolved. In the future SONY should anticipate all possible scenarios in order to avoid unecessary backlash. Break it down to the elementary level.

At those who are having trouble downloading new comics:
I was having the same problem, then I dug in another forum and they suggested re-activating your PSP with your PS3 (deactivate it and activate it again). I think the recent firmware updates somehow mess with your PSN account. I tried that trick and was able to get free comics.
The new comic reader is FANTASTIC, by the way. I’m saying it is a shade better than what’s available on the iPhone. Hopefully the comics will be reasonably priced.
