Hi everyone, here’s an early peek at PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.10). The latest update incorporates Facebook into the PS3 experience. By linking your PlayStation Network account to your Facebook account, you will have the option for the PS3 to automatically update your Facebook News Feed with Trophy and PlayStation Store activity. This update also enables developers to set specific criteria in their titles to publish additional game information to your News Feed. You can then check out your updates, and those of your friends, on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media favorites through the PS3’s built-in web browser.
This is just the beginning of our integration with Facebook and we are looking forward to adding new features enhancing the experience in future updates.
Additional highlights from update 3.10 include:
- The Photo category on the XMB has been revamped to make it easier to see more of your photos stored on the PS3.
- The PSN Friends List has been modified based on feedback we received after update 3.00. Additionally, you can now choose a color for your PSN ID on the XMB.

that’s cool but you can’t pick wide range of colors for the color picker … that’s kinda limited given how simple something like that is to program guys.
How about the ability to add an image overlay to that box that I can now add colors too so I can really decal my profile up :D; that would be wicked rude boi?
I can’t imagine that so many people gave a flick about picture organization when things like all in-game music and cross game chat were what we asking for …it would be nice to get a count on how many people asked for these features also so I can send them spam mail. :p

I appreciate the better photo layout, but the other stuff seems either minor (coloring your avatar), or misdirected (Facebook integration). So many Firmware updates… and yet few have done anything to actually improve my PS3 experience. It’s such a waste of resources when there are many more important things you could be working on in the firmware updates.
1)Instead of Playstation Home (ie Second Life Redux) how about better Friend finding for multiplayer (ie a universal way to find/join friends that doesn’t require a clunky, game-specific method such as in Rock Band 2).
2) How about the “Memory Manager” others mentioned, so that I can selectively delete DLC and saved games?
3) And a fix so that I can organize my games into albums without typing each cAsE-SeNsiTiVe album name for EACH file? Seriously, it feels like UNIX? For a company that prides itself on shiny gadgetry, the amount of interface polish is lacking.
You might want to check your priorities. Give me some of these types of important features before worrying about how to color my avatar or clog up my already overwhelmingly bloated Facebook experience.

Oh, and 1) should have included cross-game chat. Can’t believe I forgot that. Xbox360 has had that for quite a while.

Hey hope someone sees this. um i have a 60Gb now(500Gb). Can we add XMB support when i play ps2 titles because its dumb to have to stop playing my ps2 games just to check on a friend invite and other messages. Who thought that when we play ps2 games on a ps3 that we wouldn’t want to bring up the XMB. Facebook and such are already there with the browser that we have. If you want to add something useful add cross game chat and video chat. I’m out !!!

Will this firmware fix some of the issues that Firmware 3.00 and 3.01 caused on older PS3 SYSTEMS? For example, after I updated to firmware 3.00 then to 3.01, everytime I use Life With PlayStation, my PS3 shuts down and gets a red blinking light.
Also, many users are complaining that their BluRay drives have failed since upgrading to firmware 3.00 and 3.01. For the friends list boxes, isn’t it possible to put the profile info on it? You could use r1 and l1 to scroll through the pages as you have your ‘cursor’ on a friend.If it is too difficult to have it realtime, you could have it update periodically/when you put your ‘cursor on it'(or is that coming soon?)
I am confused. I have all three systems and with the exception of the wii, which is just a toy for the Mrs., I love them equally for different reasons. But honestly some updates that we are asking for would be nice. This update to refine facebook’s appearance (weak), the netflix disc that has to be used each time you stream (lame). Where is the update to stream from xmb, or pandora, or anything that makes me forget I spent $600 for this system at launch and makes me feel like it is the home entertainment system it was advertised as and not another console under my LCD?!

1.) Facebook is better, get used to it, myspace lost its potential a long time ago, and its used by predators!
2.) Trophy support intertwined with Facebook is easier, the apps are just built better than Myspace’s.

These FW updates are free. They don’t cost any of us anything and yet the majority of the posts are WAAAAAHHH WAAAAHHHH Where’s CROSS GAME CHAT SONY?! You guys are as bad (probably the same losers) that whined and whined about IN-GAME XMB! Sony already knows we want this feature, appreciate what they give you. All the CRYING AND WHINING didn’t speed up us getting IN-GAME XMB and it won’t speed up getting CROSS GAME CHAT! They will give it to us when it’s ready.
At least they are fixing the UGLY boxes on the friends list. I Hope they give us the option to change out FONT back to the way it was prior to 3.0. (Not to mention getting rid of all the ridiculous PS Store Icons!!!)

It’s very disappointing that you see Facebook integration as a way to advertise your products using our social network, rather than as a way to help us find other friends who might have PSN accounts to communicate with.
I have zero interest in spamming my Facebook friends with updates from my PS3.
C’mon sony, microsoft is wayy ahead of you!!!!! Maybe you could just add, twitter, last fm, sky tv in the uk, and get better games for the PS3, I think you need to make a amazing game for PS3, Like halo was for the 360

you know what would be really great and practical? everytim i get a message while playing a game its pretty annoying to bring up the xmb and scroll all the way to the message. what would be reallly interesting is if we had the power to acess the message with the touch of one and only button right when we get the notification. what im suggesting is like, when u see the notification : you have received a messagge from x. which stays on screen for like 3 seconds why not have us press the ps button during thos 3 seconds and that would take us straight to the message, doesnt sound too hard to realize does it?

Be patient. From everything I’ve been reading so far, we should have it by or around Christmas this year. Everything they’ve been doing since the slim came out has actually been starting to make sense, so I’m sure we’re getting it soon. Naughty Dog already pretty much let it leak out, which is probably the reason we don’t have it yet. (doh!) So maybe we’ll have it by 3.20 :)

I agree with this idea of having options for which messages. Currently the friend thing pops up so often I can’t ever see the top corner of my screen anyways.

So in the end we know they know that we want X-Game Voice Chat and they are trying to bring it. You just have to know the right places to look. Of course it would help if they directly responded to their audiences rather than to other outlets about these subjects. It can be quite frustrating to your userbase when this kind of stuff is happening.
Now the only thing I want to know is when is this update going live? It’s been almost 24 hours since this was posted and it still isn’t live. What is going on?

Okay, I’m missing something here. Eric where is cross game chat. I like facebook and i definitely like what you’ve done with the friends list but cross game chat has been what everyone has wanted for two years now. I find it hard to believe that you still haven’t released this most wanted item. I would respect you more if you said it couldn’t be done on the PS3 other than leaving us in limbo. Say that please and lets put an end to this waiting game.

I really love the direction this whole thing is going, looking forward to have full facebook support at one point.
now here is my idea:
make it possible for the user to choose “apps” (facebook, youtube, google earth, ebay, stocks, etc.) from an “App Section” in the PlayStation Store. i’m thinking of something similar to the darn smart and HUGE App Store on the iPhone.
think about it, you could always develop and upload some new apps, the community would absolutelly love it, and the PLAYSTATION 3 would have endless feature possibilties!

@ TAGImperium, I completely agree that whenever there’s a firmware update at least half of the comments that come from the PSB are people B****ing about something that ether isn’t in the new update or something that seems like a crappy idea. The point is at least you don’t have to pay for the updates unlike with things like an iPod. So If you don’t like it that’s fine, but if your an A-hole about it just seems like your being forced to use those new smaller features added.
by the way It could actually be harder than you think to get Cross Game Chat in, they are probably working on it but it would take longer than you’d think to perfect it.
I kinada wanted cross game chat but it can wait i like the whole facebook thing even though i dont go on facebook a lot. Iv wanted Sony to make the profiles more custimizible i hope they give you more options in the next updates.

I look forward to this update. Hopefully it will be out in the next couple days or so. I like the new features like photos & facebook. I have a facebook account. When I tried to log on to facebook on PS3 it looked weird. However I hope that update will straighten that out.
Sony, while I do aprreciate this update but what I really want y’all to do is: while listening to music in the XMB we can listen to music while adjusting settings, shopping on the PSN store, and copying files. I don’t if its a hard task but if you can listen to music while playing a game you should atleast do it while doing those tasks I mentiened above
