PlayStation 3 Firmware (v3.10) Update Preview

1,272 0

Hi everyone, here’s an early peek at PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.10). The latest update incorporates Facebook into the PS3 experience. By linking your PlayStation Network account to your Facebook account, you will have the option for the PS3 to automatically update your Facebook News Feed with Trophy and PlayStation Store activity. This update also enables developers to set specific criteria in their titles to publish additional game information to your News Feed. You can then check out your updates, and those of your friends, on Facebook, Twitter, and other social media favorites through the PS3’s built-in web browser.

This is just the beginning of our integration with Facebook and we are looking forward to adding new features enhancing the experience in future updates.

Additional highlights from update 3.10 include:

  • The Photo category on the XMB has been revamped to make it easier to see more of your photos stored on the PS3.
  • The PSN Friends List has been modified based on feedback we received after update 3.00. Additionally, you can now choose a color for your PSN ID on the XMB.

To get a preview of what’s coming in update 3.10, check out the video below:

We’re looking forward to releasing firmware update 3.10 soon. As always, we appreciate your feedback.

  • Looks awesome, I’m glad to see Facebook integration come to fruition! :D

  • Alright that is a great update. Suggestion though if it’s possible but with the way the Photo section looks with each image side by side now, please apply that to the Game section for PSN downloads for PS1 Classics, PS3 games, etc. After having near 50 PSN games, 30-40+ PS1 games going down a long list the current way is tedious.

  • cross game voice chat

  • lovin the update sony keep doin what yall do, am on facebook and twitter 24/7 so this is super handy for me

  • Minor update. Sony give us Custom Avatar or tons of avatar choices to hold us over until cross game chat. Also how about manual organization of video, photo, and music. As in making folders and organization. Features such as RSS will help also since the PSP had them for ages.

  • i’m stoked that my friends on facebook will be able to see the trophies i get in games. I’m more excited about the change to the friends list. I can’t even look at it right now because it’s so damn bright and hurts my eyes :(

  • Loving the updates, keep ’em coming, skype would be nice!?

    PS3 ftw!

  • Twitter would make more sense for sharing trophy informations.

On Facebook it would be just Spam -.-

  • Party (cross Gaming) Voice Chat is all we need!

  • I love the facebook integration but could do without the bulky boxes on the friends list.

  • please support more video formats and audio formats like video formats like .mov, .MKV and audio formats like .flac etc. It should be like a wholesome media player which will give more options to people to buy PS3

  • Can you please, please put some effort into cross game voice chat?

  • All sounds well…though I’m not a facebook member I’m sure others will love it.

My question…will we ever see iPod/iPhone integration? It’d be awesome to plug my Pod in and listen to the music on there. Just curious…

  • ..useless one more time thanks and compliments for your fantasy.. now .. over 3 years.. maybe something for gamers.. trophy autosynch, MORE INFO ON OUR AND FRIEND PSN ID and cross chat would be nice.. but I’m hopeless

  • Guys, these people have a job, a real life. You cannot expect these guys to respond, personally, to your every question and whim.

They’ll take a look at this blog and comments when they can, but their jobs are too demanding. And insulting them by cursing and anything else will not make anything better. Just stop it.

Cross Game Chat is in the works, but it takes time. None of you even know how hard it is to make this feature work. MS had 3 years since Xbox 1 came out to make the thing work. Sony has just started. Give them time. You pressuring them is NOT going to make your “demands” or requests come any sooner. Sony has done an incredible job with the pressures they had. Gaming industry isn’t simple. It’s very demanding, and more often than not, they have to find which thing gives them more money since they’re a business first and foremost making money is a HUGE priority right now.

  • Nice, but where is the option to THEME my Profile?

An Assassin’s Creed II Theme for my profile would be SWEET!

    XD

Also, we were supposed to get them in the 3.0 update, but where are the Premium Avatars?

  • sounds great, but there should be automatic updating without asking for user approval at least as a choice … and twitter would be cool.
in future maybe last.fm radio support.
and trophy’s should be updated automatically also

  • Very cool…

  • You’ve looked at ALL the feedback about the Gray friends boxes, and you pick the least immaginative solution..? Set-a-Color.. :(

Why not make the Friends list look like the EU portable-id? Nice favorite game backdrop, how I’m feeling info, latest tropies earned, what I’m playing info. Now THAT would be the way to solve Gray-boxes.

Facebook is a great addition, but you’ve been outdone by Naughty Dog in Uncharted2. Twitter is the platform for such Trophy updates.

Then the Avatars, it’s just square boxes with mainly face-like pictures.. Hire just ONE Graphic-school kid who just ended his education and let’m work a few weeks… you’d have Avatars-a’plenty

Now to the Step-children of XMB:
    – Musicplayer
    – Webbrowser

These two are long overdue for an onverhaul. Musicplayer looks bad with almost now visualization changes since primary release. The Browser doesn’t display all pages correctly, many Flash apps still say: “not supported”

Last but not least, Support. I would love a Support/Feedback button on my PS3.. many websites that fail say: Contact your browser vendor… How?

    Thanks for reading ;)

  • can i make a suggestion?
please, sony your getting completley off track spending time and money on things that are completley irrelevant.
theres so many things i want fixed with the ps3s XMB like a copy all function instead of having to choose one by one.
    or more ps1 classics.
    or a ps2 emulator.
or fixing up this region exclusive/ region delayed BS.
like the US got C&C RED ALERT last week, what did we get?
    WINNIE THE POOH!
i dont know about you, but i consider these a little more important than bloody twitter or facebook.
stop adding useless irreverent features to mask the things that have not been fixed and desperately need fixing!
i dont know about you, but i did not spend 1 thousand dollars on release for a ps3 to use twitter, or netflix thats what my pc is for.
i spent 1K on my ps3 on release to play games.
the ps3 is a gaming console, is it not?
i thought thats what it was made for.
frankly, im starting to wonder why i bought my ps3.

  • seems like a pretty good update. I highly doubt my friends on FB will care what i’m doing on my Playstation, but it’s still nice none-the-less. great update, even if they are just minor changes.

also, I think that you guys should create some new avatars. The current ones are good, but we need some newer and better ones.

  • This looks awesome! Seriously Eric and team nice job! I’m always happy about the updates as it brings suprising new features.

Only one question, due to time of when its busy on PSN, in the evening and in the weekends, I experience a lot of problems with PSN. Friends list takes a long time to load and I’m getting errors when synchronizing my trophies. When you check google when searching “Trophy sync error”, you’ll get a lot of recent complaints about this matter. Will that be sorted with the 3.10 update? I hope so ;)

    Keep up the good work!

  • Nice update, looking forward to it!

Is it possible sony, to think of some kind of blog system attached to your psn ID, where people can go and read that blog when they click your name in the friendlist, That way we can say a lot more then 25characters. We can keep soem sort of diary maybe tell people what we have done, when we have found a nice way to do this or that. I think it would be a nice feature!

  • Why is it we always get at the end we look forward to your feedback when we don’t get any feedback or proof and firmware that we are being heard. Last good update was pretty much at the beginning of the year and please stop focusing on social networking when everything is so barebone and can be improved like Music player, Video which needs more codec support like mkv and adhoc support and make it possible that it can be used so we can tether for internet connection or make it use bluetooth it needs to work though.

Api’s for messaging need to be released so devs can make use of there apps for mobile devices and the XMB needs a overhaul I’m tired of grey everything and icons even though they have themes but come one they should be used only to enhance the what already should be greater UI

  • Seems reasonable enough, although I really hope there’s a way to hide the facebook app.

What I’d *really* like is a way to hide arbitrary items in the XMB. That way, people who like facebook, home, and the playstation store on every tab can have that, and I can get rid of all the stuff on XMB that just gets in the way.

Also, PS2 Backward compatability would be great.

  • 360 has a killer UI and In game voice chat of course they have time to dazzle with useless social networking sites on there system. Its not a bad idea but don’t be like Microsoft and we should be able to delete add-on content individually or give us some options and file explorer could be better also and can we get an album art view for music please. I love Sony but sometimes we need to be put on the right path again and I’m not complaining at all but let’s make these updates count in a major way not a casual one.

PSN Store has come a long way and its great so no problems but again we need a better Music & Video experience along with tethering since the PSP could accomplish this when it first released and it would be awesome. Let clean up the UI and make all the extra stuff optional by getting it from the store and set it up as extra features in the store so we could get Life With Playstation, Photo Gallery and extras if we want.

  • Good improvements, but we also need more avatar pics to choose from!

  • Nice one guys, lets focus on improving the Facebook experience that would differ from the Xbox 360’s version along with improving Media.

    Here are my suggestion

    3.50

    – Upgrade Music Player so it can play music while In-Game.

-Cross Game Chat [We’ve been asking for this for a while.]

    – Allow your Facebook friends to watch what game your currently playing Via Video streaming LIVE from Facebook.

    – Add more Avatars [150 or so]

    – Add AIM Messenger and Yahoo to the PS3’s XMB, allow players to also chat while in-game.

Another thing I was wondering is if you guys can give Quore subscribers more benefits then what they already have, for example download exclusive Avatars you can only get in Quore and also increase the limit to the amount of friends a player can have on his/her friend’s list and other nice stuff you guys can think of.

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY PS3!

  • !!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE DONT MAKE THE TEXT GO AWAY WHEN YOU BROWSE MOVIES !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Hmmmm no disabling all those extra store icons though I see, thanks for listening. Well, no option to disable the ticker huh? Well there are ways of disabling that annoying ticker anyway. It just means more resistance to my using “What’s New”… Just food for thought guy’s. I would be happy to use the ads and what not watch the commercials if you would just stop shoving them down my FORMERLY CLEAN XMB interface.

  • thank God you took out those grey boxes. even though they arent completely gone, its still a HUGE improvement. They were so ugly. good job

  • As much as I love the focus on small details about the friends lists and colors, I am still waiting for some sort of cross game chat. I hardly use my blu tooth in the games I play and I would love to have conversations with my friends while they play their games too.

But I’m sure SONY has heard this all too much.

Facebook is nice, but since not all games are supported by the trophy feature I cant get too excited about it. (example; MGS4)

The organization of the photos is very nice.

  • I forgot to mentioned that the Whats’s New section should include content from the PS Blog as well so we know about this stuff. Pefect example I was on a site and they reported it and had a topic so where was the What’s New Section or the annoying news ticker then? I know you guys are working hard but let’s not loose focus here and facebook implementation could have waited til 2010 for all most of us care.

Messaging Api’s need to be released and we should be able to message outside of the XMB which needs the UI to be redone we are tired of grey everything and the PSP feel or keep it but design it in such a way you can tell its a PS3. More video codecs like mkv and a better music player with an album art view

  • I forgot to also mention, something on the Music Player.

    – Upgrade Music Player so it can play music while In-Game. I suggest you guys work with the people that made ProjectPlaylist, they even have their own site and they are pretty known for making such an excellent Music Player.

    http://www.ProjectPlaylist.com <— Work with them!

  • In Game Cross Chat, Custom Avatars, voice messages, Expanded Friend LIST PLS! my list its full to the top and i want to add more friends and i cant!!! oooh and one important thing u need to do… BACKWARD Compatibility with PS2 games! i work in gamestop and BC its an important option that consumers are asking for the ps3.

  • When are you guys removing the spam in the box in the upper right corner? Or at least making it possible to disable it?

Also, how goes the work to add MKV container support for video? Or FLAC support for lossless audio? Or high resolution audio support in WAV files? Or WMA Lossless support?

Final request: exFAT support in mass storage devices. FAT32 is great, but being limited to 4 GB files in this bright new age of HD video camcorders is just silly. exFAT removes this limitation, and seems to be getting adopted by more and more hardware devices. NTFS would also work, but might be more problematic to support.

  • pretty good, but many of us still want other stuff too that shouldn’t be very hard to add like new avatars like promised and the ps3 game startup screen, ps1 and ps2 have it, why remove our ps3 startup? OH and PLEASE LET US LISTEN TO MUSIC AND GO ON THE INTERNET AGAIN! i hate not being able to do both anymore. : (

  • Oh I forgot, nice job on the friends list improvements, nice to not see the boxes all the way up and down the list, its looking nicer, and cleaner despite my earlier complaint. Thanks guys.

  • I was hoping we’d get Twitter app instead of facebook. But that’s a good start.

  • @484 angelspawn77 they NEVER took the ability to listen to music while browsing the internet. Try a google search man, this was never an issue. Under your music or audio options, I forget where, set your audio output to 48 khz… you can use music while browsing whatever…

  • awesome!

    always love updates.

but SONY please check on the “PS3 updates thread” for my thought and others about this preview!

    thanks!

  • INTERGRATED FACEBOOK PHOTO VIEW PLZ!

It would be great if you could check a folder under the ‘photo’ tab which allows you to stream your facebook images direct from the XMB.

  • XGC! COME ONEEE!!!!

  • oh and more video type support and updated flash player for browser

  • I like the photos the best, and even though I use facebook I probably won’t connect my account. If there’s something to tell my friends about on my PS3 I’ll tell them myself (via facebook), no reason to bore them with all those trophies I earn.
Maybe if you could set it up so it only shares golden or platinum trophies would be better, in the first few hours of a game you get tons of bronze trophies for just playing the game without really achieving anything, it would be spamming facebook everytime you play a new game.
Also is it possible to choose which purchased games/demos show up on facebook, do you get a question to share everytime?
I don’t want to bore my friends with all my rock band tracks and demos every week, but when it’s a cool game I’ve bought I’d like to share.

In short I just don’t like this ‘all or nothing’ sharing for facebook. Sharing everything I do on my PS3 would be spamming it, but it is a cool feature I’d like to use.

  • oh yes so happy nice update using gamers feedback and like the face book … great

Thank you sony!!!! Your the best! You truely made the all around entertainment system console thank you so much look forword to the ever growing world of Sonys superier entertainment system!

  • and i agree on comment 493 saying

Maybe if you could set it up so it only shares golden or platinum trophies would be better

In short I just don’t like this ‘all or nothing’ sharing for facebook

  • This just in….

    Sony Fails Again!

Once again Sony has let down its millions of fans by not producing a cross game chat feature in there PSN network experience. For now I guess PSN users are gonna have to continue using your Xbox 360 if they want to cross game chat and if some dont have 360’s? Well I guess there S.O.L. Sony you need to get with the times and start making your fans happy, which has been a long, long time since you even done that. How about skype? For god sakes Sony your PSP even has skype and who plays there PSP anymore, if your not a 5-10 year old?…. Thats what I thought. Thanks again Sony for failing to produce AGAIN!
