God of War Collection packfront

To give you the low-down on how the trophies were picked, here is some insight from God of War III Design Director, Todd Papy

Other than all the visual improvements that we added to the God of War Collection, the most exciting part for me was the opportunity to go back and add in full trophy support for both games. Not only will the trophies hopefully be an enjoyable way to check your progress through the game, but they will also give the hard-core God of War fans some serious additional bragging rights. And on a more personal level, the trophies were a really great opportunity for us to share some of our stories and inside jokes from God of War and God of War II.

One of the trophies that I was really happy to finally be able get out there was “Speed of Jason McDonald.” At the end of making God of War, the combat designers were doing speed runs of the game, and soon enough, friendly wagers started springing up around the office to see who could post the best time. Jason McDonald, currently a Sr. Combat Designer on God of War III, blew them all away. He still has, a couple God of War games later, the two dollars in winnings tapped proudly to his computer monitor.

Something very similar happened when we started testing the God of War II trophy “15 Min Fight Scene.” The fight outside the Loom Chamber is one of the more polarizing moments in the game. A lot of people really enjoyed the long marathon battle, while other’s thought it was maybe too tough of a challenge. This fun vs. frustration became even clearer when the office stopped working on God of War III one afternoon to get together and watch as team member after team member tried to get through the fight in record time. Judging by the cheering that occurred when the aforementioned Jason McDonald was knocked out of the lead spot, I would say fun won the day.

Another challenging spot that we wanted to highlight with the “You Got the Touch!” trophy was the Spiked Column in Hades from God of War. After playtesting repeatedly, David Jaffe asked me to tone down the difficulty and make it easier for the final shipped game. Ironically, even after all that, it wound up being one of the most talked about sections, and not always for the best reasons. I think one of the problems is that a lot of people try to blast their way through and get it over with as fast as possible. That’s a sure fire way to get Kratos sliced up. The trick was always taking your time to think about what your next move was going to be. Throw in a couple deep breaths, and I think a lot of people will be able to make it through without taking damage and earn the trophy.

In the end, all of us hope that you have as much fun earning the trophies as we did designing them.

  • Can’t wait

  • Well, there goes the rest of my year; looking forward to this, guys!

  • trophies :) That a lot of trophies :)

  • * You Got the Touch! – Climb the Spiked Column in Hades without taking damage

I’ve got a better chance of getting 100% in PAIN than netting this trophy. LOL

I hope to have some money to purchase this before the end of the year. I hope for great sales to continue this trend of blockbuster PS2 game remasters.

  • Like the song goes: “I jizzed in my pants”

  • Some of these trophies look really hard :O Sure this will be a good challenge

Hades spike without taking damage? You’re having a giraffe…

  • “Beat Thesus on Titan mode without getting hit”

Now THAT would be a tough trophy. That was the only tough spot during my no-hit challenge for GOW2. Ok I lied, the loom chamber was a total pain, mainly because of how long you have to go before reaching the next checkpoint.

  • will be inporting.

    (damn you SCEE)

  • YES DOUBLE TROPHIES!!!

  • As long as this sells for $40, i’m all in.

  • A question lingering in a lot of folks minds, is will our PS2 GOW saves be some how compatible with the GOW collection? In particular, I would like to pick up Hard mode where I got stuck previously right outside the Loom Chamber you mentioned in this post. I quit there and finished on easy and then gave the game back to my friend who was letting me borrow it. If I could start from that point again… that would be nice.

    • Hi, to answer your question, God of War and God of War II saves will not be compatible with the God of War Collection. Best of luck getting to the Loom Chamber on God Mode!

  • what a way to celebrate PS3 HAPPY 3 years! :D

    definitely buying this!

  • Hi,

I’m really glad to see this remastering; I pre-ordered the game and hope there are other releases like this one (ICO, Sly Cooper, and Ratchet & Clank come to mind)! Some questions:

    1. Were there any enhancements to the audio assets over the original game? I was really hoping for 24-bit lossless audio (and maybe even some extra subwoofer accents) given the extra space afforded by bluray.

    2. Is there an option to listen to the game soundtrack without playing the game?

    3. Can you go into any detail on the kind of texture, mapping, and lighting enhancements that you are most proud of?

    4. Is there any graphical or audio aspects you wanted to spruce up, but didn’t get to due to time/resource constraints?

    5. Are there any updated character models? Besides Kratos, are there any you think show off the most improvement over the PS2 version?

Keep up the good work, and thanks in advance for answering questions! :)

  • Wow, two complete Trophy sets. I’m impressed. I wish I had the money to pick this up at release…not likely unless my hours at work finally pick up, though. :(

  • 1st day buy.

  • Got this preordered! Im so ready. Platinum this will be tough but at least dont have to beat God mode ;) but You got the Touch will be a duecy!! lol

You Got the Touch! – Climb the Spiked Column in Hades without taking damage

  • by the gods this game and its trophies will b mine nov 17th and march 2010 god of war 3 will b mine aswell ty sony and santa monica for the amazing epic games

  • Nice trophies :) Pre-ordered this bad boy a month ago.

    3 more weeks!

  • Love the trophy names. Can’t wait to get this game, oops I mean collection

  • Awesome, can’t wait

  • By The GODS!

So looking forward to replaying these games. Really thought there would be a couple trophies for beating the game on harder settings. I don’t care though, just releasing this collection is good enough for me.

Time to impale the Hydra one more time.

  • Picking this up whilst im in New York on holiday next month :)

    (I live in London)

    Jesus, I can’t wait :)

albeit, were all exited about some old PS2 games…meh :)

  • I will definently buy this! Oh and do you mind letting us know how many times we have to die to get offered easy mode?

  • I already have 2 copies reserved and paid in full. I plan on keeping one of the copies un-opened for my GOW collection.

    Peace,
    VG

  • I have one question.
Is the “Death From Above 2009” trophy a reference to Death From Above 1979? Because if it is, that [DELETED] rad.

  • i just want to know if you guys fixed the red orb issue in gow2 when you play it at hardest difficulty? the red orbs you collect don’t register sometimes or you open a chest and get like 4 of them. I still beat it but i’d like to do it with out hacking away at boss for almost a hour with level 3 chains thanks. i wish could just sit and play all day like I use to yep dems were da days

  • lostinplainsight, yea that rounding issue was a major paint in Titan mode, especially mana for the theseus fight, took forever!

  • Can’t wait to play. For whatever reason, I never played the first two games (probably because I don’t like action games).

Two of the best PS2 games for $40, that comes with GOW3 demo and 2 sets of trophies…I can’t pass on this amazing collection.

  • :D I’ve got it pre-ordered from amazon already… some of those trophies look pretty hardcore tho.. eek.

  • Iam extremely excited about playing through this game again! Thanks for bringing it back with trophies! Also looking forward to the “Get Me a Beer Kid” trophie :D.

  • This is such an amazing value. (Now all I need is that ICO and SoTC collection and I’ll be all set!)

  • Climbing the spiked wall in Hades is easy. I never saw the problem with it. I’ve played the first game three times and made it up all three times on the first try without taking damage.

  • subtitle?? becz I am deaf. Original gow 1 and gow 2 have no subtitle. Let me know if gow collection has subtitle ASAP. Thanks.

  • The IGN PS3GB would like to recommend a trophy for GoW III due to the funny made in this thread…

    http://boards.ign.com/ps3_general_board/b8267/186380812/r186382607

  • Great! 2 Platinums! I have the “Getting my ass kicked trophy”… xD

  • HaHaHa, i can buy/preorder this game in Poland with no problem at all, like its PAL release, cooooool.

    Cant wait

  • Since it’s gone Gold relatively early, any chance of there being a demo? Like remastered versions of the Hydra or Colossus demos on PS2?

Can’t wait to get this game, by the way. Hopefully I’ll be done with Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time by the time this is out. :p

  • And by “demo” I mean “PSN demo”.

  • SOLD!!! 8D

  • So will the GoW3 demo be available on or around the 17th, or will we have to wait longer for that to be available for download?

  • “You Got the Touch!”

So horrible section now made even more horrible.

  • Sweet! I’m from France and I don’t regret having preordered the game from the States :)

Can’t wait for the game to be released here in January 2010?

  • nice to see this is almost out, I pre ordered mine the other day so im good to go. I dunno if ill be getting the platinum trophy though since ive played both games alot of times(GoW 3 times and GoW2 5-6, ha ha) and ill be adding at LEAST 1 more each with this next one. I dont think ill be playing enough to earn em before GoW3 (what with other great games coming out and already out that i want/will have). For GoW3 ill def try to earn it though.

  • we need jak1,2,3, and jak x remastered version on 1 50gb bluray disc for the playstations 3 very soon please

  • Awesome.
First day buy for me definitely!
Don’t know how but the God of War series slipped by me during my PS2 days…

  • it comes with a demo of god of war 3 right?

  • THANK YOU I CANT WAIT!!!

  • Will we be getting the voucher to download the E3 2009 God of War III DEMO with the purchase of this game????

  • Love the trophies! I’m glad getting the platinum trophies don’t require you to beat the games in the hardest difficult because that would just make me wanna rip my hair out. After spending months to beat the games on God/Titan modes, I’m not attempting another again until GOW3.

Trophies aside, I’m just super excited for this collections disc! I don’t think I can wait for a European release. Import I must!

  • oh and i also have a question/suggestion, will GoW3’s trophies contain spoilers like these do? i say this bacause in the trophies descriptions some say “kill perseus or theseus..,etc.” if one were to read that and have never played it, it takes away from the surprise of which greeks you will battle. And that BIG spoiler on the trophy titled “daddy issues”, TMI there for new people. Not a MAJOR deal for old games, but the new one……
I always like to look at the trophies as i earn them and even skim through the rest to see which are attainable that playthrough, id hate to see a trophy say some spoiler and ruin the surprise. Other than that, great job on the trophies!
