COMING SOON: NETFLIX MEMBERS CAN INSTANTLY WATCH MOVIES AND TV EPISODES STREAMED TO TVs VIA THE PLAYSTATION®3 COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM

With Movies Streamed Instantly from Netflix, Blu-ray/DVD Playback and Downloadable Videos via the PlayStation®Network, the PlayStation 3 System Offers The Industry’s Most Comprehensive Options for Watching Movies and TV Shows

FOSTER CITY and LOS GATOS, Calif., October 26, 2009 – Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. (SCEA) and Netflix, Inc. [Nasdaq: NFLX] today announced that they are joining forces to make thousands of movies and TV episodes from Netflix available to be streamed instantly to TVs via the PlayStation®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system. Netflix expects to begin streaming via the PS3 system next month at no additional cost to Netflix members in the United States who have a PS3 system.

Today’s announcement pairs two of the most popular and fastest growing home entertainment brands in the U.S. The PS3 system’s installed base has reached close to 9 million units in the United States, and Netflix recently reported 11.1 million U.S. subscribers as of September 30.

The partnership further solidifies the PS3 system as the most complete home entertainment hub on the market today, enabling consumers to play high-definition games, watch Blu-ray movies, listen to music, view photos, browse the Internet, and download content from PlayStation®Network − from exclusive games to blockbuster movies and popular TV shows. PS3 system owners will soon enjoy an unparalleled experience watching their favorite movies and TV shows streamed instantly from Netflix, downloading from the PlayStation Network or watching Blu-ray/DVD media. The Netflix offering expands on the entertainment experience delivered to PS3 system owners via PlayStation Network.

For only $8.99 a month, Netflix members can instantly watch unlimited movies and TV episodes streamed to their TVs and computers via Netflix ready devices such as the PS3 system and can receive unlimited DVDs delivered quickly to their homes.

“The PlayStation 3 system has always been about more than just gaming, and it will soon be the only platform in the industry to offer consumers such a variety of convenient options for enjoying movies and TV shows,” said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. “Whether you want to watch content on Blu-ray disc and DVD, download it from the PlayStation Network’s video delivery service, or stream videos instantly from Netflix, the PS3 system is the only solution that offers it all.”

“As instantly watching movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix becomes an increasingly popular way to enjoy the Netflix service, our goal is to rapidly expand the devices that stream to our members,” said Netflix CEO and co-founder Reed Hastings. “As a leading game console and Blu-ray disc player, bringing Netflix to the PS3 system is a real win for both Netflix members and PS3 system owners.”

Initially, watching movies instantly streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system will be enabled by a free, instant streaming Blu-ray disc that is being made available to all Netflix members. The free instant streaming disc leverages Blu-ray’s BD-Live™ technology to access the Internet and activate the Netflix user interface on the PS3 system, which must be online via Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Netflix members simply slide the disc into their PS3 systems to reveal movies and TV episodes that can be watched instantly. These titles are conveniently organized into a variety of categories based on members’ personal preferences, popular genres, new arrivals and members’ individual instant Queues. Members can use the Netflix Web site or navigate directly on their PS3 systems to add movies and TV shows to their Queues. With the PS3 system’s Wireless Controller, members can choose a movie to watch from their instant Queues or just play directly from any of the lists. They also have the ability to read synopses and rate movies. In addition, they have the option of fast-forwarding and rewinding the video stream via the Wireless Controller.

Netflix members and PS3 system owners can now reserve a free instant streaming disc for PS3 systems by going to www.netflix.com/ps3. Upon availability, the instant streaming disc will be delivered for free by first-class mail, generally one business day after members request it.

  • @ 397 umm… 394 said he lives in Puerto Rico, not in the EU.

  • I have a few Ps3’s 1 in each bedroom and 1 in my living room, will i be able to stream to any of them? Or do i just get to activate one? Please make them availiable to steam on any of the 3 that would be great, because when i preordered the Blu ray Disc from Netflix earlier today, right under the option to reserve the disc, there was a thing that said activate Ps3 System.. Nothing about “Systems” So please Let us know!!!! :) Thanks

  • @400…the numbering system is screwy when they take a comment out…my comment is to bgdkid (now #395).

  • Any chance that Hulu could be accessible? That would be nice. Or does someone know how to do that already?

  • Great to have the option, but why on earth can I not just install the Netflix software on my HDD? Why the need to put a disc in each time?

  • WHAT ABOUT CANADA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @ 397 u can only mention 3 servise tht USA dosnt hav but EU still dosnt hav psn video store USA had psn cards 1year befr EU, USA hav some exclusive psn games tht EU dosnt, then qore and pluse exclusive 2 USA and now netflix. im not sying sony is full of [DELETED] im trying to sy tht y cant they make USA/EU psn the same??? tht would b awesome

  • :) I got console banned from xbox(WTFF I didn’t do ANYTHING) and now a PS3 is looking better.

  • Cool btu do i get netflix or gamefly? Netflix i can see movies on my ps3 fast and with gamefly i think i have to wait a few days for games. Not sure.

  • Very cool. Although my internet is extremely slow, so I will probably only make use of this when I do not have any Netflix movies currently to watch. But I am glad to see Sony moving forward with this. Netflix is incredibly popular and for good reason. I love their service and I am addicted to watching a movie every single night.

Glad to see that the ‘other’ company didn’t hold a monopoly over Netflix. Good work Sony, now you just need to give us more options for the XMB so I can reverse it back the way it was before.

  • Awesome! but wait.. is it for Canada as well?

  • What about us Canadians “EH”?

  • What’s so good about 360’s XBox live again…?

The point that you have to pay for internet?
The point that you have a dancing avatar?
The point that their interface is more cluttered than the XMB?

    Ridiculous…
You won this one Sony…, just bring Cross Game Voice Chat as promised in the next firmware update and you will soon win this console war. *Applauds* GREAT JOB!

  • Someone commented its not need cause it already has video service….
My response are you stupid (no offense) with this netflix you wont have to pay a rental fee ever time you watch something, its a monthly membership.
also do you not understand how much the library of content to watch will grow with netflix avaiable on the PS3, I have been waiting for this cause i want to watch netflix instant on my computer instead of just on my computer and almost bought a 360 just for that now I do not have too. This is a great pairing that needed to happen

  • Once again i am sure that us PS3 owners in Canada will not be able to get this service…

  • hey does NET FLIX offer Blu-Ray movie rentals?

  • Tredogg14TK: Yes, Netflix does rent Blu-ray, though there is a additional $2/month charge.

  • i hope it runs as smooth as it does on the 360. the ps3 as no problem with online game play but i’ve noticed it downloads and streams movies slower. last time i rented a movie from psn it took like 30 mins to be able to play it. My internet connections pretty fast too.

  • You guys are really complaining about the disc? I think this is great. It’s no worse than having to put in a DVD. I think someday they’ll make it an update, but starting with a disc isn’t too bad. Get up off the couch and go for a walk. Man people are lazy.

  • Doesn’t netflix want my money

    A European

  • I would have signed up for an account if this was for Canada too…

And I would have rented a crap ton of movies. Shame really. So Americans now have the PSN movie/video store AND Netflix… thanks for sharing… pfft

  • The disc is not a deal-breaker, but it’s strange. Every other embedded Netflix streaming platform (Xbox, TiVo, Roku, several Blu-ray players and a few new televisions) has its player integrated into its GUI, with updates available online directly to the player. You don’t have to insert disc when you want to use them.

It’s unclear whether you have to insert this disc every time, but if not, why not provide the app on the Playstation Store?

  • Hells yeh!!

  • I think this is an amazing idea for the Playstation community! Since Zune is starting to take over the 360 music/video marketplace Netflix will lose business. Even tho Netflix had better service!

  • What would be cool is if you could use remote play to stream Netflix movies to your PSP..

  • Wow, now if it isn’t a $50 a year charge like XBL, XBL loses a lot of favor for movies.

Not that I give two craps anyway.

Give me hulu over this crap. At least Hulu will subtitle shows if the content provider supports them.

  • Pretty lame that you need that disc inside to use it though, I can understand why since 360’s is like a plugin but I’m sure a downloading software install could have been used.

  • Someone do the math cause 360 owners are getting ripped off!!!! lol

  • who asked for this? its useless, you’re just trying to do what 360 does. so, here goes ANOTHER UPDATE with NOTHING we’re looking for. NETFLIX IS USELESS. NETFLIX IS USELESS. NETFLIX IS USELESS.

  • Yay! The way to go, f**k european owners in the ass, this feature SHOULD be available over the seas, how hard is it?!

  • Being a fairly new Netflix subscriber who never had interest in streaming movies before this…THANK YOU, SONY! My interest is now officially sparked, and looking forward to this!

  • Thank you! I’m not a Netflix customer, but probably will be one soon. On the one hand, I could rent 2 movies / month for $10, but being able to stream unlimited content is a great feature. I’m definately going to try it out.

  • @AceBeeDee

How can say Netflix is useless? I’ve been wanting this for a long time on the PS3. If Netflix truly was useless then it would have gone belly up a long time ago. Instead it’s quite the viable company and expansion is key for it.

Now you know that old brick and mortar thing called Blockbuster? That might be close to considered “useless” as you coin it.

  • It must be a full moon.

  • Um many people asked for this. Unlike Sony or Xbox stores I can get an actual disk if I want to.

And I have seen netflix stream on the xbox and it does a better job than through a browser. hopefully the implementation will be as good as on the xbox.

Personally I wish they could get HULU on it. Though Hulu’s desktop application is pretty darn good.

You guys also have to remember that Microsoft and Netflix are US based companies. I’m sure it was easier to dealer with contracts from movie/tv studios to allow access. Regions that netflix is allowed to stream to, blah blah blah. Sony being a foreign company and a movie studio themselves Im sure there were issues with that

I’m hoping that the netflix disk is just to install the firmware on the ps3 and wont have to use it again but walking 10 feet to the playstation to put it in is not a big deal. I have to walk up to put in a game disk too.

and ya’ll yapping about netflix being useless. realize that some people think cross game chat is useless and many others features that users want. why cant you just be happy you have something FOR FREE that you didn’t have before.

peoples complaints reminds me of this

  • So with this I went from slightly interested in getting a PS3 to intending on buying one ASAP. This replaces the video store that closed in a manner I accept, while bringing in none of the baggage that the PSN has on it’s (rather poor) video service.

  • PLEASE BRING THIS TO CANADA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    GOD PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

  • does Canada have any good news?…… or will Canada ever get any good news? :(

  • Question: Why not distribute the application via PSN download or firmware update, and then embed it into the XMB?

Answer: The instant streaming disc represented the fastest and easiest way to let PS3 enthusiasts to get Netflix on the PS3. Late next year we expect to have an embedded solution available for PS3s via a system software update slated for release through the PlayStation Network.

  • Gay60 fan-bots always threw this in our face. Now look what we have here.

  • To my fellow Canadians…

Be constructive and contact NETFLIX…SONY can’t make NETFLIX appear in your country.

    NETFILX contact info here:

  • @425 You do know PS3 users can’t watch hulu anymore. Hulu also never gave a real statement to why they this *cough* 360 fan-bots. Hulu die to me. The only way to access hulu is from a computer and btw hulu will start charging for its services by next year.

  • these people make me laugh its cheaper to use netflixs for 1300 dollars a month u get two movie at a timeand dowload as much u want of whats on the list and the list is huge.sony cost five dolars a movie rent.hows that the smme.daaaaa wake up.

  • niceley said cyahar

  • Solution to Canadians:
Move to the greatest country in the world, The United States of America!

Solution for the brainless people crying: Netflix is wayyy cheaper than PSN’s Video Store. People already subscribed to Netflix can only benefit from this, and who cares?! Are you being forced???

  • This is U.S only….. where is the love for Canada…. lol

  • Please bring this to Mexico!!! just great great news for ps3 owners out there!

  • yes finaly Netflix on PS3, cant wait for it
