Big Surprises at the UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves Cinema Events

156 2

Last night, four UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves cinema events simultaneously took place across the country, one of them on our very own home turf of San Francisco. It was a night packed full of fun, surprises, special guests and crazy excitement.

UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves Cinema Event 1

For starters, fans (100 of you, to be exact!) and media were greeted by UNCHARTED 2 on the big screen upon entering San Francisco’s Landmark theater. From there, a brand new section of the game’s single-player campaign (in the snowy Himalayas) was shown and introduced by Naughty Dog Creative Director Amy Hennig, who then shocked the crowd by announcing that everyone would be going home with a copy of the game…eight days early!!! Needless to say, the place erupted. Shortly after, we caught up with Amy about the whole experience.

From there, a multiplayer tournament kicked off on a never-been-played map, with a Fortune Hunter Edition up for grabs to the winner. Emotions ran high (take that, people trying to watch the French indie flick next door!) and we discovered that many of you have definitely been practicing MP in the recent demo. All the action could be seen on the movie theater screen, running through Sony Electronics‘ 4K digital cinema technology, with Senior Vice President Mike Fidler on hand to tell us how the 4K projector is the perfect fit for big-screen gaming.

For all that and more, take the video for a spin. And thanks to everyone who made it out to San Francisco, Bellevue, Thousand Oaks and Rosemont. We surely hope the night was worth your while!

And in case you’re wondering, tonight’s October 6 event is completely sold out in all four locations!

  • U2 Rules! loving the demo. Definitely buying this. U1 was great and i hope Sony really go out their way and advertise the S@#T out this game the same way ODST is being advertise. It is plastered all over GameStop.

    U2 is worth every penny.

  • Just checked Ebay and so far the only U2 related stuff on there are the door prizes- game, poster ,t-shirt,lanyard.No fortune hunter editions…yet.Once more with feeling WAY TO GO!!

  • Oh and i forgot,CAPITALISM RULES!

  • I worked at the Chicago event. It was awesome! A bit disappointed that we couldn’t get the game… I got to touch 140 copies ;_;

Either way, it was very successful. The crowd loved it, and the game looks amazing!

  • If you can hand out finished copies 8 days early, why not launch the damn game a week early? Talk about kicking your fanbase in the sack.

    Grow a pair Naughty Dog.

  • Team Fraiser won it @ Bellevue , WA!!! woo, add me guys, I forgot to swap contacts with you guys. Now just gotta wait for the FH to come to me

  • damnit!! If I knew Id get Uncharted early I would have drove the 4 hours to Seattle!

Damn you Sony for not leaking info!

  • so what do we have to do to get the fortune hunter edition?

  • I’m the one that yelled out that we should do this for God of War 3 or MAG and have a small Sony TV in each theater seat for MAG

  • I think this was a cool way to thank the fans. It wouldn’t have been much of a surprise if they told people ahead of time. Plus, the stupid ebay opportunists would have used this to capitolize on fans wanting the game. I bet a few end up there. I’m not mad at Sony or Naughty Dog here. Honestly, I’m jealous as there was no way I could’ve made the event. So so jealous of those people with the Fortune hunter Editions! Well done and congrats 2 everyone at Naughty Dog!

  • Had a great time in SF last night, thanks guys. Amy was awesome putting up with my gushing over UC and Legacy of Kain, and the game was a wildly unexpected bonus.

It was also pretty spectacular seeing the game demo on the big screen. I hope you guys do this with more games going forward *cough*G0W3*cough*

  • Why is it just in the States these things happen… you do have fans in other country!!

  • Alright, I take it all my prior whining back … Sony & Naughty Dog rock … 2 copies of Uncharted 2 later … plus a Little Big Planet GOTY, GTA 5 Prologue and Infamous … great event and it shows that you guys really do care about your fans, at least the one’s within the vicinity of the events you hold.

And my girlfriend wasn’t pissed at me for dragging her to another videogame event … so all in all, a win win!

  • This is completely unfair! I just got back from the Seattle event empty handed, didn’t win anything, only to be told how at another location today EVERYONE got a copy? What the heck?!

  • starBlinky, no you wouldn’t have. At the Bellevue/Seattle event, they only gave away 20 copies of the game in a raffle. 3/4ths of the people attending there got nothing but a lame poster, a drawstring bag, and a T-shirt, which most of us here had from PAX anyway (a better version of it too). I waited starving for 6 hours in the theater for this overly long and loud event. I’m sure I would have felt differently if I had won something, but I got maybe 1 hour of enjoyment and 5 hours of waiting around for raffles and watching disorienting and overly loud video, and I paid for it too. *sigh* They’re lucky the game is so brilliant or I’d be a lot more angry.

  • Living in the UK was bad before, Now it just sucks. Thanks for nothing. This article is a kick in the face of the fans. I had purchased the original uncharted on it’s day of release and have since sold it to at least 50 more people. (I work in video games retail) I realy feel let down.

  • Ah… The big cities always get all the breaks. Those of us who live in small towns and have to work jobs in this time of economic crisis. They get to play the game eight days early too and all for free. Ah… cursed for eternity. I don’t know how to respond to this other than… I’m bumbed. When will us smaller towns finally catch a break. I mean, I understand from a publicity prospective, but… Darnit!

  • I was assaulted by your staff at the Uncharted 2 event. http://bit.ly/14BgLt

  • I love hearing Amy talk, she’s such a smart person.

  • Mort want BANANA!!!!!

  • Don’t forget the east coast exists next time, mmmkay?

  • Nothing of this… in my country…

    Don’t play multiplayer with me… i’m gonna be a naughty player :o

  • Im so Pissed cause they never have events like that in my area!!!! Everything is so FAR AWAY NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • Wish I could have gone :(

  • I wish I could have been there :(

  • Awesome event last night in SF. There weresome rumblings from the crowd about whether we were going to get a copy of the game that night, and then, BAM, Amy Hennig goes up and makes the announcement. And the crowd goes crazy. Thank you to everyone at SONY, Playstation, and Naughty Dog for such a great time. I’ve been to several other game events in SF (HALO 2 and 3, Gears of War, Modern Warfare, World at War, WOW, Valkyria Chronicles, Street Fighter 4 etc.) but I think you guys just outdid them all. Looking forward to the next event. And please make it for God of War! I’ll be posting up some pics and video soon.

  • I was at the Chicagoland/Rosemont event last night and I had a blast, met a few developers and Sony Reps most notably Jacob Minkoff (Naughty Dog Game Designer). This guys was a blast to be around and he made himself avaliable for all of the fans, he signed most of the prizes, including the games and free posters.

Mad Shout out to Kyle in the Digital Den for all of the updates and attention to detail.

@Sony: We need more stuff like this in the Midwest and Muvico is the place to be “on the real”!

  • Ok Chris you told me to get my head together, and
    wait until after the event.

    So………..

    Awesomeness overload!

    *Head explodes*

  • 97/98: Sorry to hear about your situation, my heart breaks for you. I certainly hope, if at all possible, that your health improves. You have it much harder than I do, and I commend your ability to deal with it. I wish you the best, and stay strong.

Now in regards to the topic at hand… Man, I wish we could have gone! It looked you guys had so much fun! But we were too broke to drive up to Thousand Oaks, and my fiancee, who’s also a big fan of Uncharted, got sick. We stayed home, I took care of her made some chicken soup. Until the game comes out, we’ll be playing the awesome demo. To those who made it to these events, I’m happy for you. And to the others that didn’t, I cry along with you, but for only just a moment.

I’m still very much looking forward to having and playing this game and showing it off to my friends and family! Thank you lots, Sony and Naughty Dog!

  • I think I am gonna go kill myself now………………………..Really wish I didn’t have to work on my roof……………….in the rain………at night…so depressing.

  • It does kinda suck that they didn’t have more showings and that some got the game early, but that was really cool of naughty dog to do. If you really want it early there are some craigslist adds up, well at least in the bay are. Although the are a little ridiculous, umm 70 dollars I think. I mean I guess thats not to much. The thing is you pay an extra 14 bucks to get it not even a week early. So good job naughty dog for loving your fans. Oh and to you xbox haters, fyi this game is gonna kick gears of war, left 4 dead, and halos’ ass to the curb, then beat it with a stick.

  • Since they gave the game away for free to everyone at SF, they should do the same for the Bellevue attendees. They still have our raffle tickets. Maybe I will get a surprise gift in the mail. Not counting on it.

  • the fortune hunter collecters addition is the best thing ever

  • Europe wans Fortune Hunter Editions! :( I’d kill to get one. (in game of course…or not)

  • @112

Blame ND’s racist, xenophobic policies for excluding everyone else.

  • @75

Cry me a river dude. Boourns you live on the East Coast, I live in Canada. Just look on the interwebs and you will find out that there are or have been at least 7 different methods to get the Fortune Hunter Edition from various gaming sites to official blogs.

  • Personally, I was at the Chicago/Rosemont event and I gotta say it was completely awesome!! It was cool to meet Jacob Minkoff(Naughty Dog Game Designer) and the sony reps. The tournament was great and the prizes were amazing. I have no complaints and I hope Sony does more things like this for the fans in the future.

  • Aw man, I’m only a couple of hours from San Fransisco too. >=(

  • Me and my girlfriend went out to the muvico in rosemont,Il . I thought it was going to be chips and dips. But NAUGHTY DOG really put on a show for us . My girlfriend was more amaze than me. Thank you so much for the GiftBag ( got a shirt , uncharted 2 and a poster ) That was AWESOME..

    NAUGHTY DOG IS AWESOME

  • Aww =[

  • Any news on other ways us regular smoes will be able to get our hands on the fortune hunter pack?

  • Colorado Uncharted 2 fans weep..

  • onlineatron, they’re probably already gone since only 200 were ever manufactured, and most were given away at these events. The majority of the theater event attendees got free copies of the game, and in some case two copies (if you placed in tournament and won a raffle). Even without a raffle or tournament entry, entire theaters on both the 5th and 6th got copies. HOWEVER, other theaters on the 6th only had a handful of attendees walk away with the game via raffle. I guess Naughty Dog loves San Fran more than Bellevue.

  • i was there and played at thousand oaks (team Grenade). first round kill:18-deaths:0. lost second round to Oct.5 2nd place team who obviously had a unfair advantage going home with the game the previous night. since my team and their team were the only 2 good teams night oct 6, its obvious el dorado was going home with the fortune hunter edition. i sent ND a email about the practically SET UP tourney they had going on. i watched el dorado’s team captain run straight for the nade launcher on Sanctuary when everyone else had no clue where anything was. such BS

  • Man i cant wait for this game!

  • Attended the Monday event in Bellevue with my son and we had a FANTASTIC time! Thanks to everyone at Naughty Dog and Sony for making this happen.

We’ve played through a couple of the levels in Single Player mode and it’s purely amazing. I didn’t think you could outdo the first Uncharted, but you’ve done it!

  • @118

You do know that the reason the world sucks is people like you.

  • I can’t wait for Uncharted 2 but does anyone know if there’s going to be a map pack 4 for Call of Duty 5???

  • I went to the one at the Landmark Theater at SF. My friend and I had a wonderful time, and getting a free copy of the game was well worth lucking out on the Fortune Hunters Edition and the raffle prizes.

Sony and Naughty Dog really pulled off such a fantastic event; many thanks to you all. I also want to give a huge thanks for allowing my friend and I a chance to play the game on the big screen, since we were the first people in line. We had a blast.

Also, for those of you that expressed concern over having the events at your area: The Sony staff expressed interest on holding other events such as this one at other revenues during the event, so please send them your feedback. Who knows? Maybe they might have one for God of War III!
