Valkyria Chronicles II – Coming to PSP Next Summer

342 20

Hey all, and nice to meet you! I’m Aaron Webber, also known as RubyEclipse over on the SEGA Blogs, and I’m the community lead at SEGA of America for all things Valkyria Chronicles.

As of today, SEGA is proud to announce Valkyria Chronicles II – the sequel to the legendary PS3 epic – is coming to the West exclusively on the PSP! Join the battle once more in the next addition to the Valkyria franchise – created by the same team behind the original.

The year is 1937 EC.

Two years later, the ashes of the Second Europan war still glow in Gallia’s history. But even peace is a fragile happiness – and hearts that once fought side by side are not forever friends.

In the midst of this peace appears a group known as the Gallian Revolutionary Army, swearing to topple the current government – in a lightning fast coup, they arm themselves with the best of both Gallian technology and soldiers.

What was once a small but strong unified country is instantly plunged back onto the battlefield. But the day and age of the last war’s heroes is already fading out – with families to protect and children to raise, they are the ones who must now be protected. While numbers split and tensions rise, the spotlight shines to a handful of up-and-coming students at a Gallian Military Academy.

As civil war begins to rage across the country, morality and war clash with passion and ideals. But this time the distinction between blue and red is not so simple – nor will it ever be. Gallia once stood as a defiant beacon of hope against a giant empire… but can the country now defend against its own?

Valkyria Chronicles II will be arriving Summer 2010 – until then, you can follow all news Valkyria on the official Facebook and Twitter pages!

Finally, we’d like to give a special shout out to all the fans – those who put a fantastic game back into the spotlight, and continue to show their dedication and support for the series. This one goes out to all of you.

  • Thanks Aaron, i love Valkyria Chronicles on the ps3 and i’ll be getting VC2 on the psp but i do hope you guys bring another VC title to the ps3 soon

  • I will buy this the day it comes out don’t you worry.

    Now…

ADD TROPHIES TO VALKYRIA CHRONICLES! GEEZ DO IT ALREADY!

  • Thank you Sega for VC1, but i expected the announcement of Trophy support, with the announcement of VC 2 i am almost possitive we will nto see trophy support and i believe u guys already know that, but like to keep us hoping. Ill sell VC this weekend, i enjoyed it a lot but after going thru it all A, u know the story there is no replay value. The trophy support might have given us another go and nice challenge. Not sure bout VC2, if it was on the ps3 i would preorder is right now, but PsP? …

    • I wouldn\’t keep you guys hoping if it was impossible – I\’m a fan of the game as well, and I don\’t believe in stringing people along for things that might not happen.

If you do want to see trophies (and I know that\’s a lot of you here), then please do keep an eye out. I\’d like to organize all of your feedback together so I can show some people here at SEGA just how many fans out there want them. Numbers speak loudest!

  • I’m really looking forward to this. I loved VC. Summer is a long ways away, but there’s plenty of other games between here and there..

  • i loved VC1 a ton and even bought a PSP in large part after i heard the announcement of VC2 for PSP.

Although if VC had trophies I’d probably go back and play it again.

  • Trophies sure would be nice, hopefully you can get the team to add them ;) I’m playing the dlc atm, trophies would give me another reason to go back and play the main story again.

  • Oh since there’s a guy from Sega here…

Valkyria is the best game of this generation hands down. I can’t even play other tactics games anymore… VC redefined the genre.

I’m really impressed by the way Sega has been going lately. A lot of companies, after losing the hardware battle, just fell apart entirely. Sega sucked it up and turned it into an opportunity to evolve. You guys are one of the most innovative third parties out there.

    bring us more RPGs!

    • Great to hear – thank you for that, Hypsiphrone. As long as the fans are there to support them, we\’ll keep the RPG\’s coming!

  • Thanks Sega you guys are really kicking ass with the Valkyria franchise, and its definetley a day 1 buy for me, just promise me you guys are going to advertise this game because this really is a triple A title.

Also is there any work if well see Yakuza Kenzan, Yakuza 3, and the Valkyria Anime coming to America?

Thanks and keep up the great work!!

  • Reply on #7. Your statement about how games used to be before these trophies and achievements is so very true. I personally feel these trophies as ruining the quality of games myself, making people simple focus on them instead of what was originally just supposed to be fun. As if there is some sort of competition to it, making people judge one another based on trophies or achievements… Games have started to loose their appeal the more companies just push their products simply for the ideal profit, and not the actual enjoyment of the game itself.

I could careless if VC got trophy support, just keep brining on more VC titles and DLC and I’m one happy person :)

    • Thanks Blkant – I can certainly see the value of trophies, and I\’d love them myself, but the people who say they won\’t buy a game solely because of trophies amazes me. Glad I\’m not the only one who thinks that way!

  • Trophies for VC please!

  • @Aaron

Thanks for the response. A good resource for that kind of data and feedback is the Playstation Forums. Pop by the RPG – General section and you will see much discussion about VC trophies. Thanks again!

  • I just wanna say thanks to Sega for the awesome support on PlayStation platforms. I can’t wait till next year for VC2 and Phantasy star portable 2. =)

Now if only Yakuza 3 would come state side. Then you guys would be officially be the best 3ed party publisher for Playstation systems!!!

  • Well I am also going to ask for trophies, for the feedback. Bought all the DLC and waiting for winter for the next DLC to be available. I convinced a few of my friends to get this game and even got one to buy a PS3 for it. By the way, anyone who hasn’t bought the game yet, check out Walmart because they are selling the for 20 dollars, and then go get the DLC , its all worth it.

I’ve spent over 100 hours on Valkyria. So you can tell I’m a fan of the game. But even though the game is just as good as it ever was, without a tangible goal to shoot for, I can’t really concentrate on it. I’ll load up an expert mission, take a whooping, then turn it off and find something else to do. I admit that going after trophies is a little bit silly, but it provides an active goal that gives the game more replay value.

  • Anyone else find it interesting that after 25 posts about boycotting /6 over Confrontation that entire blog post about Fireteam Bravo was removed?

The difference? I can’t post in that thread anymore and this one is still alive because obviously this company and /6 are nothing alike. Congrats on keeping your blog post alive ;)

  • I like the game. SEGA, is there a way we can bring the manga and the anime to US? Funimation would gladly license the series (if we can get the same VAs to voice the anime), and Del Rey Manga or Tokyopop wouldn’t mind getting the manga for the US market.

  • Any word on more dlc for the original fans of Gallia on PS3? I noticed there is a trailer in japan for dlc that isn’t in the US or EU yet, will we be seeing them released here too?

Please carry on supporting the Valkyria Chronicles franchise on ps3 & psp Sega, best thing I’ve played in years :)

    • We actually just announced that the second batch of DLC (Edy\’s Challenge Missions) will in fact be coming to the US this winter!

Even though it says \”Edy\’s Challenge\”, you aren\’t actually limited to only playing characters from the first Edy DLC pack. Instead, you\’ll be given missions from characters like Marina and Jann, each based around a specific class, and then tasked to see how well you can do.

As long as you guys are here supporting Valkyria, know that SEGA will too!

  • @35
I’m with you on this…I knew they were working on a sequel, but now that I know its on the PSP I am sad :*(

    Please oh please, more R P G’S for our P S 3’s

^ There is some rhythm going on there….kinda ^

  • Thanks for your understanding reply. And yes do keep the Rpgs coming, im an rpg fan in heart and i miss some good old flavoured rpg’s on the ps3, i do know ltos of em are in the making and it takes time. Think of VC3 for ps3 then :p.

  • Thats awesome news and cant wait!

  • Hey Aaron! It is good to see someone take the time to read AND responde to a lot of comments with real replies, not just PR replies!

I remember that 400% spike when the last DLC came out had a little to do with Gamestop/EB games $30 sale on Valkyria Chronicles. Perhaps by the time the new DLC is ready to ship stateside, it might be benifichial to drop the price of the game to platimun hits range, $30 along with a new free dynamic PS3 theme (cause most people do not want to pay $3 for one but will download a free one = free advertising for minimal programing/money expenditure).

Anyway, I’d just like to see more people play this awesome game! I was perfectly fine playing through it without trophy support.

    • Hi Snuter – thanks for the comments! I\’m passionate about the games I work on, especially Valkyria, so it\’s great to see that people recognize that I\’m not just some PR spokeperson reading off pre-written text.

There were a lot of things that helped the 400% spike, and the Gamestop was certainly one of them. We also did a lot of community promotions, and most importantly, the fans rallied together – seeing a game at $30 is one thing, but seeing a game at $30 that every single one of your friends is telling you to buy can make all the difference.

If you\’re one of those people spreading the word and telling your friends, props to you – and to everyone else out there doing the same.

  • Great news, can’t for VC2 to be released :D
& I really like VC1 although haven’t started it yet, when I heard from people around the internet & the reviews that VC1 was a must have & other things & after tried out the demo, I planned to get it but unfortunately there wasn’t anymore copies available in my country (Iraq) but a couple of months ago I traveled to Lebanon & there I saw they had it I quickly grabbed on, didn’t want to miss that opportunity, Sega has some nice games this generation & can’t wait to see that next Sonic game how it turns out.

Good luck guys I hope you succeed with VC2 like you did with the first one.

  • It is good to see this game coming out state side, now I have a cost effective reason to invest in a PSP. There are the Eureka Seven and Bleach games I want too… but they are imports.

Valkyria Chronicles truly is a hidden gem of a series and a pure pleasure to play.

  • Playing the original right now. Huge fan of the artwork/gameplay.

  • I agree with the idea that trophies shouldn’t be a determining factor in a purchase desicion. I have yet to pick up VC1 but will definitely be buying it soon regardless of a trophy patch or not.

They are nice enough to have but I can definitely enjoy a game without them if anything they only add a small portion of replayability. Even then I would prefer in-game rewards for coming back to the game than simple trophies that don’t do anything.

  • Don’t care about trophies, but I know they sell games, so bring ’em on.

Can’t play PSP games, my old eyes won’t let me focus that small anymore, so I won’t be getting VC2 (I had to give my PSP away because it just wasn’t fun anymore). Want to play VC2 SO badly. VC1 is still my alltime favorite PS3 game, period. I feel a bit betrayed and very very frustrated they haven’t announced a sequel on the PS3. Won’t stop me from suggesting VC2 to all my PSP-using friends, though.

Curious about the DLC, but I wasn’t too keen on the original DLC, since it didn’t add itself into the actual story and I couldn’t use my existing characters to play it. Not really interested in adding more difficulty modes, either. Laters!

  • Love this game.

Trophies would be appreciated, but like you said, there was a time where we played games without thought of reward.

    Lookin’ forward to the sequel!!

  • cannot wait ^_^, day one buy for me

  • Aaron Webber you rock i am glad the developers and other staff members understand that most of us aren’t worried about trophies to play and enjoy a good rpg, if people miss out on a good game for “fairly minor reasons” let them. Keep up the good work

  • Hey Aaron Webber thanks for the blog post. I loved Valkyria Chronicles on the PS3. With no exaggeration what so ever, and as a Wii, PS3, and 360 owner of this generation, I can say that this is the best RPG of this generation that I’ve played so far, and up there as one of the best RPGs I’ve played as all time. A shame that there are people missing out on such a great game over something I feel is petty when it comes to a game like this.

Before I do get into VC II, I will say this…one type of DLC, well more of an expansion…that I’d LOVE to see would be, the ability to playthrough every mission as the Imperial side. One can dream right? Haha (Yea I know there’s the Selvaria mission pack, loved it!)

*Ahem* Oh right this is about Valkyria Chronicles II…anyways….yea at first I admit, when this was announced I was a little shocked it wasn’t on PS3 and the news did come out disappointing to me. But then it came to me shortly after…”Valkyria Chronicles on the go…HELL YEA!!”

Can’t wait for this to come out and will keep supporting anything VC related! (Hey hey…Valkyria Chronicles costumes for LittleBigPlanet & PlayStation Home *nudge nudge*)

    ~ Take care!

PS: How much for an art book ;D

    • I agree with you 100% that this one of the best RPG\’s of this gen – my favorite on the PS3 period, and by far.

If you think the idea of Valkyria Chronicles on the go is awesome, your heart will possibly explode from pure glee when you hear about one of the new features we\’re adding. I can\’t say more than that for now, or the fun police in dark suits will come hover over my desk… but it\’s going to be awesome.

PS: I\’m going to Tokyo next week, and will be meeting with the team then – I\’ll see what I can find out about those art books!

  • I would really like to play this game, I am a big fan and supporter of the first one. But, I have to say putting the second on the PSP is kind of a lame move. I don’t own a PSP and don’t ever plan to, hard enough to get the games I want now on the systems I have. So it makes me wonder why they would so willingly cut off a lot of the fan base. You cant tell me they did not think about that when deciding what to do with VC2.

If you could give me any insite on to why this is that would be great, I fail to see any smart reason other then quicker development and lower costs.

  • #77

The expert mode DLC was essentially adding whole new missions to each of the skirmish fights. I didn’t buy it at first either, I was like “Why would I pay just to remove my tank?” But it gave each mission an entirely new enemy configuration and was WAAYY harder. I ended up buying it and it was well worth the 4.99

  • @Aaron

First off, just wanted to say thanks for all the great games that you guys are releasing. It saddened me to see that you guys weren’t going to localize Yakuza 3.

However, VC does need trophy support. I know you’ve answered countless pleas from people in the past about trophy support, but I just want to be another voice that is saying that my favorite title this generation deserves to have them as well!

Looking forward to the VC2 release on PSP next year. Thanks again!

    • UNCyrus – let me brighten your day first off by confirming something big:

Yakuza 3 is not cancelled – and the possibility for localizing it does, in fact, still exist.

The original news story that went around about Yakuza 3 being declined for the US was false, and localizing the game still remains a big point of discussion for many people here at SEGA, and especially those of us on SEGA\’s community team.I know it\’s far from an announcement, but I just felt you should know that the chance does still exist.

Thanks for supporting SEGA and quality games like Valkyria Chronicles – I\’ll be around with more news on VC/VC2 soon!

  • Please add Trophies support to the original VC game.
    Thanks!

  • Would love to see trophies added to VC! Please make this happen! Thanks!

  • @Aaron Webber I hope you can give me some kind of answer here but I understand if you can’t, I was wondering why you put Vyse and Aika in Valkyria Chronicles? It gives me hope that there will indeed be a sequel to Skies of Arcadia! And if there is a sequel I’m hoping it does come to the PS3, They don’t make game like that anymore most RPGS are too linear with no exploration anymore its just straight from one town to the other! Well my question is, is there any possibility of a sequel in the future? I know you guys must have thought about it and the 2 games that really need a sequel are Skies of Arcadia and Legend of Dragoon(this one is up to Sony) I hope you guys at Sega realize there are still huge Arcadian fans out there!

  • Good to hear about possible support for trophies. I bought this game the day it was released, played a bit and loved it.

I have to admit though, that I’ve been holding off on playing it anymore because I’ve been expecting trophy support. It’s not that I seek out the validation of a Trophy score increase, it’s because I like how Trophies chart people’s progress in games, how you can compare them with friends and show off your taste in games. Anyway, I’m hoping you guys can patch the game in with trophies soon.

  • I bought the 1st for my ps3. One of the coolest games in a long time. I can’t believe it didn’t sell well. Hope this is just as good.

  • Just wanted to comment on the trophies subject … i’ll play any good game that makes its into my greedy french/canadian hands, i buy so many games that i permanently have 10 or games in their original wrapping … o_O However in my pile of good games to be played, games with trophies do tend to (re)make their way to the top of the piles faster then the others, Perfect example would The last guy and Disgaea 3 which made a comeback resently on my ps3 due to trophies/DLC .. howevever the Valkyrie chronicles didnt feel the warmth of my ps3 since last year even though i downloaded the DLC already … o_O. Usually i do revisit a title when a sequel comes out so VC’s DLC will probably be played around the time VC2 comes out.

  • Oh, and Welcome to the PS. Blog Aaron. We hope to see more posts from you in the future.

And if you can thank the guys runs the VC facebook page for me that would be great. As I won some VC DLC from those guys last week.

Keep up the great work =)

  • I’m also a big fan of VC and I’m definitely looking forward to VC2…

…and I agree that trophies would both add replayability to VC1 for existing owners as entice new gamers to the franchise…

  • VC was fantastic. Don’t get carried away with trophies–that stuff is nonsense. It’s nice to have them in a game, but trophies shouldn’t be the “make it or break it” deal or even “the straw that broke the camel’s back”. (although, that has a very negative connotation, but you get my point)

I just feel that trophies should never be “patched into” a game, unless they were intended from the get-go, and just were buggy when it launched. I played through several games that were fun the first time, and even though trophies were patched in, it didn’t motivate me to play through again in most cases. I’m just saying a game should stand with or without trophies. And Valkyria Chronicles definitely did exactly that!

  • Here’s an idea concerning trophies… how about a poll on Sega’s website?

“Should Valkyria Chronicles get a trophy patch?”

Let Sega see how high the numbers are. VC fans are dedicated.

  • Oh um…side note…did PSB post something about SOCOM, and then not properly set it up on the blog page? I got something via RSS about SOCOM Fireteam Bravo 3 or whatever it’s called on PSP, and when I clicked the link to check it out, I got an invalid page.

I really wish there was some way to communicate on the PSB without having to post specifically to one article. Maybe a side “forum” (without user-created threads, just general PSB-created forums & threads) would be nice to have?

  • I loved the first VC even though i only played the demo and never got to buying it because of its price… but when VC2 comes put I am going to buy VC before that to catch up on the storyline :)

  • When I first started playing VC on the PS3, I wasn’t very pleased with the fact that I was forced to aim with the left analog stick. Also when more trophy enabled games came out, the game took a spot on the shelf.

Recently I have been looking for something different, so I dusted off VC and popped it in for another try. I am so glad I did. After a while I got used to aiming with the left analog and the gameplay itself is just addictive.

Still, if/when the next VC hits PS3 again can someone please add the option for us to change the aiming reticle to the right analog?

Thanx and looking forward to the PSP version!

  • I am glad you guys are promoting this game in the US so quickly! Ever since I played the demo for the 1st one (which I subsequently bought) I loved it. Also, add my name to the list of people who wouldn’t mind trophies in VC 1.

  • what happened to the days where people played games for the game, not for the trophies. Trophies are cool and they are fun and challenging to achieve but i, not going to self a game for lack of trophies. To each his/her own.

  • Cool for VC fans

  • hey sega release yakuza 3 NOW!!!!!
