  • OMFG!@!@!@!@ im downloading it right now In usa!!!

  • i cant get on the psn after the update plzzzzz help me someone

  • ……………….nope don’t like it…………………………
why is everyone so excited about it…………………………
    The old one looked cleaner……
    time for 3.1 already…………

  • This new update is not very good. I want the option to disable the news ticker as it is practically useless and the ugly gray boxes around the friends list people need to go away now!! The bigger fonts and new default theme are cool though.

  • Feedback:

-Have an option to use the Classic boot up screen (including the sound).
-Have an option to use the game/software boot up screen (where is says “PLAYSTATION 3” and has a little chime).
-Redo the Friends List; those huge gray blocks are just ugly, at least make them as an outline (like the clock area) or maybe even translucent (with very low opacity) or classic style (blank).
-Have an option for the Classic icon size; the new bigger ones seem jagged to me.
-Have an option to disable the What’s New marquee in the clock area.
-Have an option to turn off the outline around the clock area.
-Have an option to use the Classic loading indicator (the ripple instead of this clock thing).
-Have an option to turn off the extra Playstation Store icons; I know how to get to it and know What’s New by coming here.
-Have an option to turn off any icon (except major icons) such as What’s New or Internet Search since people may not use all of the functions and want an uncluttered XMB.

  • -Have an option to change all of these new icons you guys have been releasing such as the Signing In…, What’s New, Life with Playstation, Photo Gallery, Playstation Home and Playstation Store icons to blend in with the rest of the XMB style.
    -Cross-game voice chat.
-Improved party system (system-based rather than game-based).
-Improved loading of Trophies and of Profiles.
    -Improved messaging system.
-Improved loading of in-game XMB (or use a less intensive version such as the Xbox 360 implements).
-Have the current game pause when entering the in-game XMB.
-Implement streaming music services such as Last.fm and Pandora into the music column.
-Implement Netflix streaming services into the video column.

  • -When downloading content labeled as “You cannot perform background download of this content.” allow users to access other parts of the XMB such as playing music or videos or viewing photos (but not allow the initialization of other games) and have a popup notify when the content is done downloading and ready for installation.
-Even with the Classic XMB theme option (sans sparkles), the transitions still show sparkles (from boot up into XMB, from games to XMB, etc.).
-Different wave styles in the XMB (such as the PSP implements; not just the introduction of sparkles).
-Implement a standardized updating system for all future games into the developer SDK (some games just have a terrible implementation such as PAIN and SOCOM).
-Have an option to notify us of when games that have been installed (meaning disc games that have data under and downloadable games) have updates available (instead of having to insert the game and start it up to see if it has any updates).

Not all of this needs to be implemented, but most of it would be great towards the end-user’s experience.

  • YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!

  • This “update” sucks. The bigger xmb font makes it look like I’m playing on an old CRT, not a HD LCD. The ‘friends’ list is ugly, and the ‘what’s new’ section is useless. Plus, I miss the old start up font/chime. Sony really screwed the pooch on this one.

  • This firmware update is hideous!!!

First off it makes the sleek elegance of the PS3 look very toyish and cheap with the larger font and ugly friends list and annoying ticker please change it back, or at least add an option to choose. also too many playstation store icons ughh all the new design choices are terrible geeze!!

I hate the new intro, because it doesn’t match the older ps3’s which as of now the majority of us own. The old start up was much more tasteful, it’s the new font which shows up is terrible, because the old ps3’s seemed left out now that there is a new model ps3. i also dislike how it doesn’t match my ps3’s font. Also the game start intro, what happened? the old chime worked and added more to the allure of the ps3, remember everything is in the details and small things do matter. If anything change the start up to show the playstation logo, without the font, because the whole redesign to me feels that us older ps3 owners are being shunned and left out for the new owners which isn’t fair and sony shouldn’t have made the xmb uglier for the sake of the new owners geeze hire some artist designers or something…/end rant.

  • Really… I’m really disappointed with this update.

Quite a few things I liked but there are a few things that really got on my nerves. First with the good things.

-You took out the Playstation 3 startup screen and sound that take place when you start a game.

-You made the text easier to read on people with SDTVs.

-You made the firmware faster and loads the friendslist and trophies list much faster than before.

    Now onto the bad stuff.

-It seems that this update to me is more about the store and the slim than anything else. The Logos for the startup should match what PS3 you have. Whether it is a slim or a fat.

-Really? Do you really need 3 Store icons ontop of a ticker you cannot disable. This makes it feel you want to forcefully and blatantly advertise stuff. If we want to go to the store you only need one Icon. If we want to see whats new we will go to the whats new channel instead of having to see an annoying ticker all the time.

-The box around the clock is very tacky and should be removed.

  • In addition to my previous comment…

This firmware makes it obvious to me that you guys are hurting for money and are trying to drum up extra sales via all of the FORCED Playstation advertisements on the XMB.

I bet this GREAT (sarcasm) idea came from Stringer himself, which is why I doubt it will change anytime soon.

Gotta love those top down corporate strategies by people that don’t use the product. :)

Sony’s foot must have a lot of holes in it by now. :D

  • U GUYS R NEVERSATIFIED. PEOPLE SONY IS ONLY TRYING TO PLEASE YOU GUYS

-Info about how much juice we have in our controllers should be UNDER the clock area and not beside it. Setting the icon next to the new ticker and clock area just looks weird and doesn’t flow well.

-The new friends list look is terrible. You might have been able to pull off that look if you threw in the users ID card next to their name inside of the box but with nothing else in it, it just looks awful.

I know that a lot of these points are complained about a lot but please listen to us.

Change the new friends list back.
Give us an option to disable the ticker and the new store icons.
And please do it soon. Perhaps within the week.

  • I WANT MY OLD UPDATE BACK NOW !!! YOU CAN KEEP THIS PS3 ADWARE CRAP FOR YOUR SELF !!!!

WHY DOES THE SYSTEM SETTING OPTION TO TURN OFF “WHAT’S NEW” DO NOTHING AT ALL. EVERTHING IS STILL THERE AFTER REBOOT……BOTTOM LINE I HATE IT ALL.

  • And what happened to the PLAYSTATION 3 logo that came everytime a PlayStation 3 Software was launched? Where did it go?Why take it and what happened to the startup logo?
    I have a 60gb model not a slim.
    Just re lanch firmware 2.80

  • 2 tone gray tiles suck. looks obnoxious. The media ticker has to go, along with the border for said ticker. And whats the deal with 2 clocks? A digital or analog choice will be dandy.

  • WOW sure is alot of babies here. Its just fine. Execpt the gray boxes. Grow up people.

  • Buncha legitimate gripes with this firmware:

1.) What’s with the huge default font, dynamic clustering, and friend list bracketing? It looks like a wreck.

2.) Was it necessary to list the Playstation Store under both the games and network areas?

3.) There’s also no need for a “what’s new” section when the news ticker is still clearly visible.

I thought you guys touted the XMB for its simplistic design, so most of this update was pointless to begin with.

  • Eric Lempel/Sony,

Thank you for the firmware update. You’re always saying you’re looking forward to feedback. So here is my initial feedback on the new update.

New Dynamic Themes – I’m always happy to see when any product is enhancing the ability to customize to fit personal taste. So I’m glad to see the addition of dynamic themes. I hope to see these become very creative and fun and not just thrown out for money from big games. Hopefully users can also make their own dynamic themes as well in the future.

New Avatars – Although I’m a little disappointed none are up with this update, I’m also pleased to hear there will be a(hopefully) better selection of avatars. As you can see I have not selected one yet because for the most part the ones that are available now (in my opinion) are bland and generic and do not make me feel happy with selecting one to represent my user profile.

New Ticker – The new ticker at the top corner is good. I like how it shows how many friends are online, if there is a new message and the time without taking up much room and can be seen quickly at glance. The inclusion of the users avatar seems pointless since it’s so small. I can somewhat understand the complaints from others saying it looks “plain”. I understand the reason for it simply being just a small lined box but if there was a way to make it look more fancy while not taking up room or covering up much, I think more users would be happy. One last thing, the advertising scroll should have the option to be turned on and off. Like previews before a movie, some enjoy it and some hate it.

New Appearances – I really like the more dynamic “original” background and the new PS3 logo appearing when the console powers up. I hoped the music player visuals would be updated with a few more dynamic options and the option to categorize the music folders to be improved. Hopefully this will be considered for the next update.

  • yo yo new ps3 update yo

  • 1 – Spamming the PS Store seems more like you’re advertising it to us than allowing for easy navigation. The navigation wasn’t hard at all to begin with. That’s what you at Sony did best with the XMB. This just clutters the XMB.

2 – The friends list looks AWFUL!! It’s a stale grey that’s just unappealing. The PS3 input box is ugly, DON’T copy its color scheme. At least give us the option to turn them off and change the color of them.

I have more complaints, but these are the ones I dislike the most, and frankly, a large majority of PS3ers on GameTrailers, GameSpot, etc. dislike.

Please follow your costumer’s advice like the fine people at Media Molecule and the team working on PS Home.

I’m not saying take it away, though, just give us an OPTION to hide these PS Store shortcuts and hide those ugly boxes!

  • to many store shortcut, the one in games and videos is not needed.

    the box is wierd

  • Font is fine.. no need to change it. Mainly loving all the speed improvements though. huge thumbs up for that.

  • I appreciate the new features in this firmware update, but I do have a few suggestions:

    1) PLEASE let us change the startup screen back to the original!!!

    2) Give us the option to make the text size smaller.

    3) Let us disable the info feed in the upper right hand corner.

    4) Start the XMB back on the game icon, and add back the “PS3” screen that showed up when starting games.

    5) Change the Friends List back to its original appearance. The new “silver box” look is a bit too distracting.

In a future firmware update, I’d really like to see you guys redesign the internet browser to make it easier to use.

  • Ok, great Update! really, i like everything but the friendlist isn’t that good. But i won’t complain about that.
Though i have a complainment. And it’s not about this Update.
Is it really hard to return “Theatrical Trailers” section into the normal PSN? i mean why is it on the “Video Store”? people like me who doesn’t live in the US can’t even download it them!. So please make one of two things…. Rrturn it to the normal PSN Store. Or, don’t block that little section for us, to let us download theatrical trailers. Please.

Returning to the 3.00 I’m waiting for the Avatars! hope we can make our owns or put our character of home as an avatar.

  • Please, just undo this mess of an update. Put the old one back up for download. I honestly cannot see how ANYONE could look at this when it was being developed and think that it looked good.

It’s an eyesore. Please remove the boxes and change the font size back ASAP. I don’t even want to turn my PS3 back on because it’s that hideous.

  • I’m also in the anti-3.0 crowd. The update has taken Sony that much closer to a typical Microsoft Operating System – one filled with gaudy and annoying advertising (programs in the analogy).

The XMB was always your strongest point – it was elegant and graceful. Now, with the large, “don’t need glasses anymore” font, it looks horrible. Combined this with the incessant “ticker” in the top right hand corner; its become distracting. I don’t mind the What’s New – but I dont need links to the PSN everywhere.

This update has moved the XMB closer to the Micorsoft Blade system – it’s not a smart move. This update has cheapened the look and feel of the PS3 – not a smart move.

At the very least, there should be a new update that allows people to:

    (i) turn of the Ticker in the top right hand size; and (ii) revert to the original small font.

  • Its ok
but dont like the glitter thing at the start and the blured background thing is annoying

  • New Icons – The ‘What’s New’ icon is decent. I do not at all like being automatically taken to the ‘What’s New’ icon every time I get on my PS3! If I want to go to it I will but don’t force me to go to it every time. Please fix this quickly. The additional Playstation Store icons under both the game and video XMB icons are ridiculous and unnecessary. It’s as though you’re saying users (old or new) are incapable of finding out where to make purchases or it seems like a pushed advertisement. We don’t need three PS Store icons, a ‘What’s new’ icon and constant side scroll advertising to figure out what and where to make purchases. To me it seems somewhat insulting.

New Friends List – This by now I’m sure you realize needs fixed. I understand the reasoning behind the large gray boxes but there has got to be a much more sleek and visually appealing way to highlight the users names to stick out regardless the theme/background/color. The large grey boxes are in a word ugly. Please fix this quickly.

  • For everyone in here that is saying “I hate this it sucks”

    Seriously?
    Quit trolling…

I love the new firmware, everything looks awesome. People are getting so upset over the fact that the logo changed like seriously you people are RAGING over the logo change.

    Get over it…

  • As others have mention for being such a big update this doesn’t seem like much, other then a few visual tweaks and more forced advertisment with the new icons. What we want as users, gamers and customers are updates that improve useful features (web browsing, listening to music, chatting with players, ect.) make us feel more connected to other PS3 owners around the world, make our console feel custom to us and that make the PS3 feel like an all in one product that it is being advertised as and well worth the money invested.

    – Long time customer

  • Hello.

It’s been a while since I last commented.

While I appreciate the effort Sony is doing with the firmware updates, there are a few jarring issues with it. I hope my feedback is considered.

    1. This is probably the biggest oversight. I live in Quebec, Canada. Here we have no video store available, and probably never will due to the fact that the laws here are different from the USA and the ROC (Rest of Canada.) Yet the PlayStation Store icon appears under the video category. What does this mean? It means we have one useless icon sitting on the XMB. Please remove this according to regional differences in the next firmware update. It serves as clutter and nothing else than giving an error message.

    2. The old information board text scroll. I believe it is a legitimate plea to ask for an option to turn it off. If you turn off the “Whats New” section, it should turn off with it. We could do that before with the information board, it would be appreciated if we could do it now.

  • An option to remove the ticker would be great, too. The ticker serves no real purpose.

  • 3. The friends list redesign is awful, as it’s already been said. Please remove the grey squares, they serve strictly no purpose and only look like a simple image file someone threw together in Photoshop in five minutes.

    4. The font size/text fading. It would be appreciated if we could modify it. I have only a 20″ computer monitor to play in 1080p HD, and it looks too big on it as I am sitting where I normally would if I were using the computer. Additionally, the text fading after one second does not help for navigation. An option to turn it off would at the very least be welcome. I have thousands of photos on my PS3 so looking at each more than a second makes the names of the others disappear, it is unpractical. Same goes with music, if I am scrolling through slowly through a large music collection to find the title I want, it is impossible, I have to scroll fast so the text doesn’t disappear so I can read it.

I hope you consider this feedback for the next firmware update.

  • I have my visual output set at 1080p

I have a 1080p wallpaper for the xmb background

HOWEVER its NOT showing the whole freaken wallpaper.

Sony I thought u said this is an HD console and not a SD console. Then why limit us to a SD output resolution with visuals??

  • oh and for some reason every time i click automatically sign in at the sign in menu , the next time i log in the my account on the ps3 it doesn’t work :C

  • where are the new avatars? I really wanted too see some new ones, great update though.

  • I’m going to be one the few here apparently who DO like the update more than hate it. I agree with the vast majority about the ticker needing to be turned off- but keep everything else in that top right corner. Also, I agree with everyone else that the friends list is bland-looking with the grey; I think that there should be an option to change the color of it, rather than change it to a permanent certain color again- this way we can customize our friends list to match our themes.

As far as the font size goes, I think it is probably like 2 sizes bigger, I don’t hate it- I think it looks fine. (Although I’m sure allowing people to change the sizes would help stem the anger.) As for the complaints about the PS store icons, it’s their because it goes with that section; “I want to buy videos, so I’ll go under the video option on the XMB and click on the playstation store”- this way takes you directly into the video store as well. If you don’t like it, all you have to do is take the .001 second of your life to tap down and you’re past it.

  • Please add option to reduce text size please!

  • Iv enjoyed almost eveything about the update.

Only things i would change is to have the option to switch back to the old font size.(for us HD owners)

Also, i dont realy find anything wrong with the friends list, besides looking a little empty.Adding a persons level, percentage and trophy count would fill in the empty space very nicely.

    Thanks Sony for the update.

  • I have my complaints too, like everyone else. But there’s a difference between having a valid, thoughtful criticism, and whining about something that is completely miniscule and irrelevant.

Anyway, great update Sony, I feel that if you alter those few things above, people will be much happier. (A lot of these request call for allowing us to further customize our XMB, themes, friends lists, and so on on our own. I do think that it would be cool.
