UPDATE: The PS3 Firmware (v3.00) update is now live. You can use this update to upgrade your system software to version 3.00.
Just in time for the official launch of the 120 GB PlayStation 3, PS3 Firmware (v3.00) will be available shortly. As detailed during gamescom 09, 3.00 will introduce a number of great features, including “What’s New,” a redesigned status indicator and Friends List, and support for new avatars and dynamic themes.

Dude, that is nothing but the truth you speak. On occasion you’ll get someone ripping the Dev’s a new one, but more often than not people just applaud them.
The new friends list is lame. Consider spacing out the boxes so it’s not just an ugly column of grey.
You could also make the boxes transparent so they’re not blocking out those new dynamic themes you want to charge money for.
Well at least the kids get something to look forward to on the first of september (including me)
This update is a HUGE disappointment. All you do is shove the store in our face in each section, the “Whats New” section gets rid of the sweet new animating backgrounds and goes blinding bright blue.
AND worst of all the UGLY grey backgrounds on the friends list.
Wow Sony, 3.00 is the biggest disappointment ever. YOU REALLY don’t listen to people on here, it’s time to get an Xbox 360 if thats the case.
-Cross Game Voice Chat and Invites
-Update the web browser so it doesn’t run so slow (Webkit based)
-Ability to stream internet music easily (like 360 will do soon)
–Movie streaming service, Hulu support, MKV support.

But otherwise, I’m very happy with the update! And thanks for fixing the issue with region free Blu-ray Discs that had PAL content!

The Next thing We Need is to REMOVE ALL PROTECTED GAME SAVESa nd have all of our Game Saves Save to the PSN Network that way we cant Cheat the System.. have a Specail Sync for our PlayStation Game Saves.
And also CROSS GAME CHAT = Should be called PSN CROSS CHAT ;)
SONY WE KNOW THAT Microsoft has a Patent for there Type of CROSS GAME CHAT.
Its like that in anything that is Patent you just havet to Customize it to the PlayStation Network STANDARD’S ;)

I like the option to have the new cosmetic changes in 3.0. Moreso, I would like the option to turn them off. I love the larger font, since I have bad eyes, but we should be given the option to change the size. The ad ticker under the date/time is hideous, as is the box that surrounds it. Again, these are fine to leave in, just give us the option to turn them off. The friends list is ugly, and I miss the PLaystation 3 logo and sound when a game loads (you could have just changed it to the new ‘PS3’ logo?).
Most importantly of all: let me edit the menus in the XMB to remove those horrible PSN Store bags. If I want to buy something from the store, I will. I don’t need it on every menu. The XMB was so clean before. Now it looks like a cheap pop-up Ad. I loved the old stylish XMB, that showed me exactly what I wanted to see. I grimace every time I move the bar over the PS store bag now.
On a kinder note: thanks for giving us the option to turn off logging into the ‘what’s new’ icon. That was incredibly tacky.
Font is too, big. I understand you’re trying to get a standard going for better compatibility with the PSPgo but at least give us the option to go back to the old font size.

Basically, it was beautiful before. Thanks for implementing new features and visual changes, but please, please give us the option not to use them. I use the PS store all the time, I don’t need to be reminded it exists in every menu. It’s ugly, and doesn’t represent how sleek and beautiful the PS3 is. Please give us the option to edit the menus.

the only drawback that i see with this is that the store doesn’t seem to be working like it should neither the connection test thing .
Love the new background and the LBP background. I like the font/icon size, though it seems a lot of people really want an option to change it. The friends list looks worse now, but functions better as I am able to clearly see who is on and what they are playing. The new ticker at the top right is not useful.
I think the best thing would just be to add options. Options to change the friends list box color (or box at all), make the font/icons smaller, and remove some of the PS store icons, and provide an option to turn off the ticker.

Firmware 3.0 was supposed to be epic – a milestone. Instead it turned out to be worse than a Windows service pack. I was expecting exciting features like cross-game chat and instead you gave me senior citizen fonts and bad design mistakes. Just when you had so much momentum, you unleash this turd upon your customers. If I could cane you, I would.

We like to rip apart the Devs because they don’t have enough.. well let’s say courage to just release the universal custom soundtracks and cross game voice chat. It has been almost three years now and you guys still haven’t release these options to the public because you’re worried about EA’s emotion? Come on.
Friends list and bigger fonts are terrible and were unwarranted. Not sure how the devs thought that was supposed to look better….
Love everything about the update except for maybe the new friends list look. It would be nice to at least have an option to switch between the new and old styles in the next firmware.

-3x PSN store buttons is so stupid. All of that should have been in it’s own section inside What’s New.
-The Grey boxes around friends GOTTA GO. SO UGLY? Fire whoever made this.
-When you hold down the PS button on the controller the font and theme DONT EVEN MATCH all the new theme changes to the rest of PS3.

I hate to join the lynching crowd, but I hate the cosmetic changes even more, so here we go. The XMB was elegant and functional, the design was consistent all over. Now we have all these different types of boxes floating all around — one type of box for the “What’s new” section, another for the friends list, yet another for the content under the now ubiquitous Playstation Store icons. The new font size is too big… the average gamer is around 30 years old, we can still see just fine, no need to enlarge everything. The ticker is also discrepant with the XMB design.
I really, honestly hope you guys at Sony don’t turn a deaf ear to our feedback.
@651 I agree completely. My main beef with this update is the friends list containing gray boxes around friends now. I loved the way the PSN friends list was, it was unique in its own way and reminded us how easy and sleek the XMB actually WAS. Now this update slaughters it, makes everything big like I’m blind, puts the PS Store every where (apparently Sony wants more business), gray boxes over friends list make everything look cluttered and unorganized. I can see why Eric Lempel didn’t show the friends list in the update, Sony would have delayed it to take the gray boxes out, but this time they made a risk that is now regrettable. Sony, you had it right the first time. How about inside of having a gray box over our friends list you can just highlight over their name and in a few seconds their name will morph into their PSN card, the name would stay there and the PSN card would appear around it and display their trophy level, ect. Please Sony, everything in this update is cool except for the friends list and PS Store icon under Game and Video, I know it could make sense, but we do not need three PS Store icons running on the XMB, it just slows it down even more.

The shortcuts 2 the PSstore should look diffrent, it looks kinda cheap and may confuse people.
Also alow us 2 change the size of the xmb its way 2 big, as well as the new friends part with the grey outline looks pretty bad so please try and fix that.

Well I will say that most of the changes are very nice. My two cents on some things that need to be changed asap.
1)Friends list is awful please go back to no boxes around the names.
2)There NEEDS to be an option to turn off the ticker in the top corner. Personally I am not a fan of it.
Other than that I am happy with the changes.
if u cant sing in is cuz, a lot of people are downloading the firmware at the some time so i can sing in but it took like 2 minutes to do it

the friends list is so ridiculous, and WOW at the font size haha i could see fine before, but sony you have to put options to turn the font size down, change the friends list viewer, and turn off the news ticker, the option was there before, so why take it off, overall it’s not a great update at all…
btw an option to change font color on upcoming updates would be great

It is that I don’t use the PS3 as much, otherwise I would feel very ashamed to show any game on this console to visitors. The XMB looks just as cheap now as the slim model now, so there’s some kind of synergy at least ;-)
I like the new set up. Some of the white space was killed in exchange for larger font and icons, which doesn’t bother me.
The preview for Pulse and the like are a neat feature!
The gray background on the friends list is a bit obtrusive, but it really ties the gamer card into the look of the system.
Running a few demos I noticed that the XMB comes up faster now, which is awesome. Waiting out the XMB while I’m getting fragged is a pain.
All in all, I like it. The new themes is a nice addition, but I think it could use more oomph. Custom themes where the layout, positioning, and size would be the bomb- especially for our own home brewed themes.

Why can’t I change the font size? Why does the friends list have big grey backgrounds that block my theme now!? Why is there a “Recently Played” section in What’s New?

ok, much of it is cool, but please get rid of the grey boxes, nobody likes it, I have been a playstation fan for abou 14 years now, and you go from having a playstation logo when launching a game to nothing just to save a few seconds, which I think breaks the rule of playstation and makes it feel horrible, also the friends boxes look horrible, if you are gonna stretch it out so far you need to allow longer comments, but having the box over crowds the whole XMB and makes it look cheap, please fix these issues, it ruins the classy feel of the Playstation brand, and the begining launch screen is ok, but I liked the Sony Computer Entertainment since you are the creaters and maintainers of playstation, please listen to everyone’s ideas, as they are the ones using the stuff, fix it please

Here are my issues….
1. The Info ticker, should give us the option to disable it.
2. No need to have PS Store Icons in every column. You could have just named them Games Store, Video Store etc.
3. The LBP theme is very nice but carries a hefty price tag 2.99 just seems steep to me.
4. We really need some actual values assigned to the Trophies and our Levels. The values changed all over the place behind the scenes.
Oh yeah… and thanks for adding a PSN Store Icon to the Video section…
you know.. considering I live in Canada it’s EMPTY and says “No content available i nyour country” so it’s basically just clutter in my XMB.

I’m sorry for the harsh tone but this update is simply NOT GOOD and makes me lose faith in the people working for Sony Online.
I think this update is crap. I have a launch 60GB system and compared to the previous firmware efforts, this effort seems like a cheap cash-in.
Cons and concerns:
-I can’t log into PSN.
-Orchestra opening is gone.
-PLAYSTATION 3 splash screens are gone.
-I can’t turn off the gaudy add-ridden
“What’s New” section.
-Excessive number of PS Store Icons
-Annoying ticker that displays useless (and redundant) Playstation information.
On the last point, it’s obvious the console is capable of understanding Atom/RSS feeds. Why not let ME pick what feeds I want to see from websites I visit?
I’ve owned my PS3 since 2006. I’ve spent a lot of money with you guys and have been here since crummy firmware 1.00. I don’t need to be reminded of how to access the damn Playstation Store.

For the love of god please fix the friends list. It is just terrible now. The gray boxes look horrid compared to the rest of the XMB and they serve no purpose at all. The previous list was FAR superior and cleaner looking.
