  • @577 updates arent required since 2.8

  • Dude!! the new update is sick!!

  • I’m loving this updates, but yes like everyone else, i wish for you to fix many things or at least give us the option to change them.

    Pros:

    – Sparkles/Premium Themes (Please make free ones Sony, not everyone has 2.99 you know)

    – What’s New Section + PS Store Ads

    – Faster Friend List Loading

Cons (Needs to be fixed with option changing or gone asap)

    – Grey Block on Friend List (There horrible and god awful looking. At least have the option to change it back to the old look. If you had it for the XMB theme, why not for PSN?)

    – Ticker/Box (Have the option to keep it on or of please)

    – Premium Themes/Avatars (If your gonna have them, make some free and some for charge..not everyone wants to buy themes/icons. I love buying stuff, but for avatars and themes, that’s too far with me Sony)

So overall, i like this update..i just want options to change things around. Thanks again Sony =]

  • this is to good to be true

  • I dont know if anyones noticed this yet but I can nest an extra layer of folders for my music and movies in my external hdd so nuts to yall thats a big function right there no more display all :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Thanks sony, oh and I love everything big like this its great I have bad eyes and this makes it nice for when my contacts are acting up or something

  • I like everything except the font size. Please allow us to change it.

  • Please include a number next to the message icon in the status bar, indicating the number of new messages. (Just as the online friends icon includes a number, indicating the number of online friends.)

  • Laammee.

Someone on the development team must have been drinking.

The friends list is now one of the ugliest things I’ve ever seen.

The font is five times more massive then the planet Jupiter.

And now it takes about ten years to sign into the PSN. Wonderful.

  • its live!!

  • I like the new firmware, but I have some cosmetic concerns.

    1. The box around the information in the top right needs to go, it just makes it look tacked on. if it was seamless it would look very classy.

    2. change the friends list back, not a fan of the big grey boxes. unless you have more plans to make it look better, change it back.

other than that, i’ve noticed speed increses throughout the menu, trophy list and trophy compare. other than the 2 cosmetics i think it’s a good update.

but really, your XMB and interface is all about beauty and ease of use. those 2 things i mentioned do not make it look like the classy system that it is.

    Thanks,

  • Just got the update. I’ll fool around with it tomorrow. No time tonight.

  • This harks back to the old saying, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”

Basically you broke the xmb, now fix it.

  • The friends list looks terrible. What is up with the huge gray rectangle? You also stretched out the comment box, but yet you can’t put more characters in it. Everything seems cool, but the Friends list is really terrible looking.

  • Yeah……its not good when I cant log in…I see that there were a few others here that have the same problem. Hopefully Sony has a solution for this issue because its kinda annoying when Sony gives us an update just to screw other things up.

  • i cant reply to new messages without having to start a new one ,i cant even send a quick message on the message header cus of that stupid copy option.. wat the hell?? everything is purple , my background , my music icons and some of the xmb icons.

  • SONY:

PLEASE add an option to get rid of the UGLY grey boxes around your friends on the friends list. Or at least change the color to match the default them better. They are so ugly and they flicker when using the in-game XMB.

Overall a nice little update with the new status bar but doesn’t deserve a 3.00 name without the much desired cross game voice chat or something similar.

  • Please allow the information bar ticker to be turned off.

  • The friends list was fine the way it was, just make it where you can highlight over a PSN name and their trophy card will expand under their name and push down other users to fully show the trophy card. Please remove the gray boxes or come out with an update to get rid of them, Sony please, this really looks bad.

  • Just need a font size option. Other than that, I like it.

  • I’m sorry to say, but this update makes the XMB look extremely cheap. I could live with the PS Store bag everywhere, but what is up with the font and friends list? Seriously are we going back to standard definition here? The XMB was sleek, clean, and professional. Now it looks like it was made by a class of 12 year olds. The friends list is an embarrassment to look at and I can’t believe how tacky everything looks.

My PS3 was a cool stylish guy, now he is fat and drives a minivan.

I want to go back to 2.8 :(

  • i hate this [DELETED] update..change it back nigguhhhss.. OMG! trouble logging in, messed up friend list outcome, and where is the new avatars?..theres nothin!! good JOB sOny!

  • I for one don’t want this update, because according to wikipedia’s PLAYSTATION 3 System Software article:(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3_system_software), the new PS3s (Slim) will come with version 2.75, this will among other things, replace the PLAYSTATION 3 logo that came everytime a PlayStation 3 Software was launched, for, I suppose, the new ugly, simplistic PS3 logo, which is understandable since that’s the image of the new PS3s, and it might be misleading for those owner’s of PS3 Slims to continue to use the old one, since the new PS3s use this the new logo, that I understand, but what about those of us, who got the first PS3s, I own the 60GB SKU PS3, wouldn’t it also be misleading for us to use the new logo, which is nothing alike of the one we got used to, the one that was supposed (and I honestly believe that)to be behind the avant-garde design of the PLAYSTATION 3?

  • New friends list is DISGUSTING! Change it back!

Also put an option to disable the news ticker! We had an option before!

Give us size options for fonts! Right now it’s so-big-up-in-your-face size!

And only one animated theme and no avatars!? :(

Visually the whole thing if full of fail right now. Looked better before.

  • Acording to wikipedia’s same article the old PS3s will catch up to that logo change with Firmware v3.00, I just don’t understand why do the PLAYSTATION 3 logo must also be changed on those systems that bear it on the system itself, it makes no sense, why not at the very least make the logo-change optional for those owner’s of the original SKU’s.
600 bucks for a beautifully crafted system, with a changed logo, that doesn’t fit the original PS3’s design one bit, neither it does me being entirely happy on spending that money, to be back-stabbed like that. I’m just furious. Honestly, what’s next? switch the XMB for the XBOX 360’s OS?? judging for this actions we’re not really that far from seing something of hat very calibre.

  • *3.00″ SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!! wat a wast to upgrade the stupidest things HELLOO how about some better featuers.

  • Sony why oh why would you take away my ability to listen to music and pull up the XMB and look at pictures?
Ability to choose font size and yes I would like to turn off the ticker.

  • @579

PSN is taking awhile right now because they are getting slammed. Tommorrow your sign in times will be the same as ever.

As for friend list…I assume the grey boxes will eventually fill out with the same info you get on the EU forum sigs…but really we should have been given a ‘classic’ option.

What’s new…if it stays REALLY up to date I guess it is fine but if it is like the current PS3 Browser Homepage..showing info from MONTHS ago…then let me have the option of hiding it COMPLETELY.

Also…can we drop Playstation Life? You’ve done NOTHING significant with it and it doesn’t integrate into the system at all. Keep F@H but drop the Lifestyle or let me hide the icon.

  • PLEASE GIVE US THE OPTION TO REDUCE THE FONT SIZE!!!

AND GIVE US THE OPTION TO GET RID OF THOSE UGLY GRAY BARS ON THE FRIENDS LIST!!!

PLEASE GIVE US THE OPTION TO REDUCE THE FONT SIZE!!!

AND GIVE US THE OPTION TO GET RID OF THOSE UGLY GRAY BARS ON THE FRIENDS LIST!!!

  • …continued

Once again…STORE PEOPLE…please put a video of the content you wish me to buy…for frack sakes..you launch animated themes…want $3 and you don’t have a video connected to the actual item for me to review? I shouldn’t have to hunt it down in PULSE or some such…it should be in the store.

Also…your system knows damn well what my IP address is (Canada) so get rid of the Shopping bag in my video section…it is useless to me and pisses me off as a reminder of why I had to get an Xbox for video downloads.

    Cheers.

Oh…next FW Update can we add some actual FUNCTIONALITY

  • mkv support? MKV SUPPORT? no………

but a lot of ugly things like the friends list and the PSN Store link every corner … Superb job Sony! (NOT!!!)

  • Dopeness. I just installed it…

I love my ps3. And Sony and everthing they do! Keep it coming guys…

  • Overall good update. The good. 1. Animated themes=bravo!, 2. Sparkles on the XMB=Sure why not?, 3. New video playback features=Awesome, 4. New startup sequence is nice with the new logo, but I miss the old sound, 5. New avatars=Sure and I do know others do really want them, on this note when can I use my sackboy as my avatar *hint hint*, 6. Status bar=awesome (would be nicer design without the white border I think). 7. You fixed the battery meter coverup! 8. The absolute best thing you guys added is multi output for the audio! A++

  • Ok now the bad. My complaints are few, yay. 1. Must add a way to disable the ticker in the status bar, I like the status bar, but the ticker is driving me mad. 2. Please allow us to turn off the extra store icons etc. I promise you I will STILL shop at the PSN like I did before. I miss the simple clean XMB, it was a great simple design. 3. small design things like boxes and borders, friends list complaints etc. It could use a cleanup. Again simple is good. Ok now simple things I’d like to see. 1. Invisible option to sign in on PSN without friends list seeing you’re on for shopping PSN etc. 2. I’d love to have an option I could turn on to enable messages to display in entirety for 10 seconds or something. So I could read them in entirety without going to the XMB. Thanks Sony, and nice job all in all, just please let us opt out of the tickers and multiple store icons, this is by far my biggest complaint.

  • I hope whoever thought those “half assed shiny grey boxes” in the friends list was a good idea gets fired. Ugly, don’t improve text legibility, and provide no information. Why exactly are they there?

How do we turn off the annoying scrolling text in the top right?

  • Dear Sony,

Firmware Update was nothing short of a huge disappointment to not just me, but many other people.

There are several severe flaws with the update, all of which have been very well pointed out by other posters.

Hopefully you not only want feedback, but heed it as well. Please do something about this as soon as possible, because to be honest, it’s (meaning the XMB and all of its functionality) much worse than ever before.

    Regards

  • The new clock is nice but it seems like the only noticeable change is the glitter…yeah. Update takes away more stuff than it adds like the intro in the beginning is shortened and when you boot a game the intro for that is missing. Bring those back.

Overall, it looks like a really unnecessary and sloppy rush job that adds next to nothing. Bring real updates the people want like cross game chat, something people have been demanding since day one. No one cares about glitter. It really helps to listen.

    Also

You really should fire the guy that does the art for this.

  • man wats up wit the update not on the website now i gt 2 w8 wen they put it in the website thats sum
    BS

  • I see that you guys are Trying to appease us the consumer, but there are just too many problem that Sony is missing. Here are a few.

    Update issues:

    * Music can no longer play in background
    * Recently played needs to be under game
    * No Need for my own name on friends list
    More to come when noted.

    Want To See

    * PS2 backwards compatibly ( PSN store would be great)
    * Cross game chat

  • Hey Lokiroo420, should everyone just kiss Sony’s @$$ in here or what? This is a blog. Comments are for feedback, silly fanboy. Man, Sony articles are always full of over-sensitive children.

  • A++ for the update but you should have given the LBP theme for free and charged for the newer ones….Killzone,Warhawk,REsistance.

  • Can we revert back to 2.80 and still play online?

  • If it wasn’t for the fact that I occasionally like to play online I would not update my PS3 for this one. Updated it on a friends PS3 and my God it is the ugliest looking thing that I have ever seen.

Not one thing that was added visually does the PS3 justice. For one, that many store icons are not necessary. I know that the reason for it was to get easy access to specific places in the store but it was easy enough as it was. The store is laid out in a very easy to navigate fashion.

I already hate the new clock thingy where the watermark used to be. The what’s new section is a cluttered mess and should not have been added. In fact the only thing that has been done right is the movement of the battery life indicator. If you want a good update you need to do the following….

First, undo all visual changes and the whats new icon. Then bring back the information bar, but instead make it an RSS feed of this site. It is now always up to date. I can live with the changed logo in the start up though. That you can keep.

Please make the changes back to a more sophisticated XMB so I may play online again. I really don’t want to download this ugly update on my PS3

  • Ok now the bad. My complaints are few, and small. Yay. 1. Must add a way to disable the ticker in the status bar, I like the status bar, but the ticker is driving me mad. 2. Please allow us to turn off the extra store icons etc. I promise you I will STILL shop at the PSN like I did before. • I already ranted earlier but seriously… this is some major case of :

    CTRL-Z

  • When the firmware was announced, they never said anything about the friends list having a new look. It’s the only thing I really hate at the moment. It’s just… so annoying to look at. I miss the old look. SONY, YOU BETTER FIX THIS!

  • Thank you for the cosmetic upgrade. However text looks a little big and the friends list looks awful. Love the new animated themes

    thanks again

  • OMG DUDES ITS HOTT!!! :)

  • – I loved the clean look of the XMB. The new friends list looks terrible. I’d really prefer the old look.

    – I don’t like the multiple PS Store icons. I check the PS Store every Thursday night and have done so since I got my PS3 two years ago. I don’t need a reminder that it’s there. Give us the option to hide those icons. They are useless for many of us.

    – I don’t like the scrolling messages in the new info box. I like the other stuff, but I find the messages distracting. You don’t need to remind me to “Visit the PlayStation Store.” I know all about it, as well as every other message you could possibly post there. Give us the option to disable the scrolling message but leave the info bar.

    – The default black color option has been removed? Why? I can’t even select it while using the “classic” theme option. Removing a color makes no sense at all. In fact, you should be adding more colors. I’m really not crazy about the new purple, sparkly, My Little Pony theme.

    – I liked it when the system started up and went directly to the game icon on the XMB. Make it a setting.

Really Sony, you asked for feedback. I hope you actually listen and give us choices on these things.

  • @616…

I’m looking at photos and playing music…

  • Please give us OPTIONS for the following:

    — Adjustable font sizes

    — Translucent Friends List b.g. — get rid of that nasty gray!

    — Toggle the ticker on/off. Option not working in current FW iteration.

    — Option to remove the box around the ticker and icons in the upper right. Looks obtrusive and out of place with the rest of the XMB.

    — Option to remove the PS Store icon from underneath the Game and Movie columns. Again, it is obtrusive and, worse still, it’s a lame way to push the PS Store upon the user. Again, please give us the option to turn this on/off.

Most of my issues are UI related. I don’t know the behind-the-scenes updates to the new FW. I’m sure there’s some good stuff there, some unsung work that has been done.

But for now, I am lamenting the absence of the once-pristine XMB interface.
