Hi everyone, PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.00) adds a number of great new features that we’re excited to share with you. The latest update incorporates changes that improve navigation on your PS3. First, you’ll notice some cosmetic changes to the design of the XMB (Xross Media Bar). We’ve enhanced the look and feel of the XMB so that it’s easier and even more intuitive to use. We’ve also added network improvements and personalization options to help enhance your PS3 experience.
Additional highlights from update 3.00 include:
- “What’s New” – The “Information Board” will be replaced with a “What’s New” section, which allows you to enjoy interactive PlayStation news every time you start the PS3 system. Located under the PlayStation Network icon, “What’s New” displays the latest and greatest game, video, PlayStation Network and PlayStation news and releases, as well as your recently played games, in a sleek, new animated format.
- Status Indicator – In the top right corner we’ve added an indicator bar, which displays your user icon, friend icon, the number of friends you have online and a small message icon to let you know if you have any new messages. The indicator also includes a scrolling ticker that features the latest news from PlayStation Network. In addition, when you press the PS button, the battery life indicator will no longer cover up the clock.
- Friends List – Now your PlayStation Network friends will appear in a slightly redesigned format on your Friends List. Also, messages will now be viewable from each of your friends’ respective profiles.
- PlayStation Store Shortcuts – We’ve added a handy shortcut icon to the PlayStation Store under both the Game and Video categories so you can access the latest content quickly and easily.
- Personalization – Personalize your PS3 with new dynamic custom themes and avatars. Dynamic themes as well as free and premium avatars will be available through PlayStation Store. A dynamic theme takes your screen to a whole new level as it incorporates animated objects into the background.
- Trophies – Showcasing your hard earned trophies just got better. Update 3.00 gives game developers the ability to modify how they display trophies for add-on content. Base and add-on game trophies will continue to be combined into a single list so you can see where you stand in a game as a whole. Within that list, trophies will be broken out into subcategories—base trophies and add-on trophies—that way, you can easily view the percentage of your base game trophy collection, and separately track your trophy progress in add-on packs. Look for this enhancement to be included in upcoming games.

SONY AMAZING JOB. BUT LOOK HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE ASKING IN GAME CHAT IS IT REALLY THAT HARD? AT CAN WE ATLEAST HAVE RELEASE DATES ON FIRMWARE UPDATES BECAUSE ALL OF US ARE REALLY ANXIOUS TO KNOW BUT OTHER THAN THAT THANKS FOR THE UPDATE KEEP THEM GOING!!! :)
this is what they shoud update when they can, update the browser as pc standared update the message box so you can send an recive other files like music and videos no matter how big or small the file, put in msn messages facebook etc. on the xmb menu, in game music an chats, shoud have playstation network chat rooms for the people who go on the network can meet new people, update the chat setting so u can chat with the headset wen browsing the web or lisnin to music, update the bluetooth so you can attach any bluetooth device to the ps3 so its easier to send an recive files, they shoud also let to resize the chat settings and let you move the chat box were ever you want so u can browse the web play games while chatting jus lyk instant messanger on the pc if you agree copy and paste and put ya votes down

The new ad says the PS3 “only does everything” Obviously it doesn’t.
Also why the bleep do games have to install after downloading. Come on!

Sony’s main problem is that they haven’t told us why we don’t have these features and if they are even working on them.
I would GLADLY pay a yearly subscription if PSN outweighed XBL but it just doesnt any way you cut it. Free does NOT equal better.

hi i know this will be an awesome update but i have a question why my ps3 turn on but inmediatly a yellow light appear then a flashing red light i cant play with my ps3 i want to know why is that happening to my ps3 and yea i play all time is my ps3 overheated i hope i get back soon

Cross-game chat and a party system feature would make it psn better so why aren’t sony do anything. If it is too hard fine but at least tell us you are working on them and give the people a date to which they can expect the features.

Simple features that would be really great to add:
-Having the choice in notifications between when a new message is received and when a contact logs in/off, so that we’re not bothered during a movie or a game by 100 messages with a contact list of many friends, and so that after we disable notification while being fed up with this, we do not lose track of messages or game invites.
-Create a selection of themes to apply randomly at the startup of the ps3, so that the user can enjoy variety.
-Create a playlist of music or video files.
-Save bookmarks for each video file/disc played, to be loaded after a ps3 restart
-Create a queue of files as we add them to copy, so that we don’t have to manually transfer files little by little each time only one is finished.

Any BC would be cool for me regardless of if its a update or a external hardware device.

We demanding more Video Codec support in this version of Firmware please. The current video codec support is very limited. Also would be nice if SONY could take out the PS2 regional Restriction for PAL PS3 60G would be nice. PAL PS3 60G using Emulation which is just software, so I think removing restriction would be much easier than NTSC 60G.
Please More video Codecs. And better web browsers (like firefox 3)
If you guys want a BC then go buy a 20G, 60G and the original 80G PS3. Stop whining and demanding for BC when you only get for what you pay. Else go get a PS2 then problem solved. I on the other hand have a 60G PS3, where i paid over 1000 bucks for it. So shut the hell up and stop asking for BC for free, if you want BC then buy BC like all the launch consoles owner. But removing the regional locked for PS2 games would be a great help, because some games that are out in USA did not come out in Europe and Oceania, which meant we are missing out.
On the other hand, SONY could also make BC available for download but you will have to pay for it (may be $100USD) and it could be locked to the console and cannot be share. This Idea i would love to support if SONY can achieve such difficult task. Pay $100 is cheaper than buying a PS2 console anyway :D so, SONY take my advise, make some moneys on BC software addon to PS3, sale it to people who wanting it. Because you have to spend countless hours to get it working.

YOUR PS3 IS OVERHEATED….. WHICH MEANT BROKEN, WHICH MEANT YOU HAVE TO SEND IT TO SONY FOR REPAIR OR SELL IT AND BUY A NEW CONSOLE. NEVER PLAY YOUR CONSOLE MORE THAN 8HOURS STRAIGHT AND ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT THERE ARE CONFINE SPACES ATLEAST 15CM ON EVERY SIDE OF THE PLAYSTATION3 DURING RUNNING. ALSO DO CLEAN YOUR PS3 EVERY SINGLE DAY AND KEEP THE DUSTY MATERIALS OFF YOUR PS3. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY TO PREVENTING YLOD OVERHEAT. HOPE THIS ANSWERED YOUR QUESTION.
the ps3 can do basically anythng all there is a few more updates and features thats about it and the ps3 will be on its level

I know this is a PS3 and not a PC — but make the browser standard like in a PC with ability to
– Run flash to be able to watch TV using Hulu.com etc.
– The navigation with the keyboard and mouse should also be easier if they are hooked up — why not allow same navigation as in PC.
– Skype — anyone, anyone????
– ability for add-ons in the browser (make it open source — so you guys don’t have to built everything)
— Collaboration with Netflix/Blockbuster to allow streaming Video???
The new firmware seems to be a pretty good improvement, but when will there be availability for PS2 compatibility? Also, when will users be able to customize and personalize their own avatars like they can do in Xbox Live? Those are my two biggest concerns, because it was the lack of backwards compatibility that crucially hindered the TRUE success of Playstation. If they were to make it backwards compatible, I would still have a use for the 50+ PS2 games that I can no longer play with my old & broken PS2. Most of which I would still love to play again.

You realize you could have bought a BC PS3 for quite some time after release.
If you wanted a BC PS3 that badly, you even had a chance to pick one up after the announcement that they were going to be discontinued.
I don’t really get the complaining about this “missing” feature.
where is cross game chat and if its the most powerful console how come it takes ages to load a game also when you download a demo why do you have to go back to it and install it all these faults are making me think of selling and buying a xbox

how bout making everything in our download history sortable/categorized. this way i dont have to see all the demos i have previously downloaded, and instead i can just see the games… or do we already have this option?
Sounds alright, but some suggestions for future updates. Backwards compatibillity, some sort of gamerscore thing like on xbox live, lastly, custom avatars.
If any of these were incorporated soon, I’d be truly ecstatic
Allow us to deactivate our PS3 from the internet. I can’t watch movies I buy from the video store because I forgot to deactivate my old PS3 before I sold it and I want to keep my current id. Also, please allow us to change our email address in our account. Having a music store would be nice too.

Great updates – Thx. I have one simple request – when will PS3 allow its users to access TV/Movie watching websites such as Hulu, ABC, CBS, NBC, etc? I think Sony can sell PS3’s to a whole new demographic if you were to enable this simple feature – people will buy it just for this and perhaps the Blu Ray (and the game console, which initially will be a nice to have, will pull them into the world of gaming). This is what happened to me – like many others, I bought it for the Blu Ray and now I’m a gamer! Please, Please address this issue! Thanks in advance.

what i am wondering about is, will the bravia sync also be implemented to the 80gb version by a firmware update or will it be exclusively for the slim edition, because if, i would hate myself for buying the 80gb editon 4 weeks ago.
