PlayStation 3 Firmware (v3.00) Update

1,985 0

Hi everyone, PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.00) adds a number of great new features that we’re excited to share with you. The latest update incorporates changes that improve navigation on your PS3. First, you’ll notice some cosmetic changes to the design of the XMB (Xross Media Bar). We’ve enhanced the look and feel of the XMB so that it’s easier and even more intuitive to use. We’ve also added network improvements and personalization options to help enhance your PS3 experience.

Additional highlights from update 3.00 include:

  • “What’s New” – The “Information Board” will be replaced with a “What’s New” section, which allows you to enjoy interactive PlayStation news every time you start the PS3 system. Located under the PlayStation Network icon, “What’s New” displays the latest and greatest game, video, PlayStation Network and PlayStation news and releases, as well as your recently played games, in a sleek, new animated format.
  • Status Indicator – In the top right corner we’ve added an indicator bar, which displays your user icon, friend icon, the number of friends you have online and a small message icon to let you know if you have any new messages. The indicator also includes a scrolling ticker that features the latest news from PlayStation Network. In addition, when you press the PS button, the battery life indicator will no longer cover up the clock.
  • Friends List – Now your PlayStation Network friends will appear in a slightly redesigned format on your Friends List. Also, messages will now be viewable from each of your friends’ respective profiles.
  • PlayStation Store Shortcuts – We’ve added a handy shortcut icon to the PlayStation Store under both the Game and Video categories so you can access the latest content quickly and easily.
  • Personalization – Personalize your PS3 with new dynamic custom themes and avatars. Dynamic themes as well as free and premium avatars will be available through PlayStation Store. A dynamic theme takes your screen to a whole new level as it incorporates animated objects into the background.
  • Trophies – Showcasing your hard earned trophies just got better. Update 3.00 gives game developers the ability to modify how they display trophies for add-on content. Base and add-on game trophies will continue to be combined into a single list so you can see where you stand in a game as a whole. Within that list, trophies will be broken out into subcategories—base trophies and add-on trophies—that way, you can easily view the percentage of your base game trophy collection, and separately track your trophy progress in add-on packs. Look for this enhancement to be included in upcoming games.

We’re looking forward to releasing firmware update 3.00 soon. As always, we appreciate your feedback.

  • Meh, I could live easily without most of the stuff this is offering. Unless they mention cross-game chat and/or the ability to play music from your hardrive in-game, then I ain’t interested.

  • this looks great i am so looking forward to the status bar in corner and definitly more avatars, the dynamic themes and shortcuts

So much better then X 360 lame one like when u put your picture on there it cuts the bottom half off. So cool sony!! 5 out of 5

  • on the dynamic themes part can users download the tools and make there own dynamic themes or only developers like from ps3themes.com?

  • AMAZING!!!
but there is only one more thing the ps3 is missing now, cross game chat so i can talk to my friends even if they are playing another game, that would be so cool hopefully they add this in one of these days.

  • pretty cool update :D

  • Can you give a date to the update?

  • Its Awesome! i cant wait to update my ps3….. :)

  • HA! He said “cum online”! awesome.

  • Great update, but I think that you need to add these ten feachers…

    1) Party Chat
    2) Multiple Login in
    3) Backwards comparability
    4) Better, faster, and more affiant web browser

    5) More additions to the Playstation store

    6) Faster download times for movies in the PS store

    7) Some new USER icons (offline ones)
    8) Some sort of subscription fee for movies
    9) Ability to watch movies with friends
    10) Ability to appear offline

And by the way… WHEN IS IT BEING RELESSED

  • good job on the changes, but um, I hope the scrolling ticker has the option to disable–? I really don’t like scrolling ticker stuff.

  • OMG sounds AWESOME. Oh how I love firmware updates <3

  • Everything sounds great. When is this update going to be available for us to upgrade? And please do something about the lack of ability to delete trophies of games that we no longer have. I hate having those in my profile. And i don’t understand why you don’t have a Penn St theme when you have all kinds of other football teams but not them. Please add that for me. But overall i can’t wait for this upgrade. Great job Sony!

  • nice PS3 #1

  • Every thing look great but we would love to have a in game voice chat in the new update, and the ability to Multi-task for example lessen to music and play a game in the same time. I think with those two things the PS3 will be perfect.

  • This update is amazing. There is only one major thing that everyone wants and should have been included in this update. That feature is in-game voice chat. We have it in Home, why not bring it over to the entire Playstation Network. That would truly make Playstation Network amazing. Now on to the great features added in this update. I love the fact that now we can animations running in the background. I can already picture all the different things people are going to create for themes. Like Dragon Ball Z, Metal Gear Solid, God Of War 3, Uncharted 2, and of course undoubtedly…. the inappropriate stuff, lol. This update I really like, it just would “loved” by me if they added a in-game voice chat feature.

  • Is it just me or are some people really lost?

I have had backwards compatibility for ps2 games every since I have had my ps3 the 60 gig original….if you dont have it b/c u got a later version …well too bad copy it from some one who does have it….it was downloadable for a while at the store…anyway

most of what people seem to be asking for is u know what “live”…well unless you wanna “pay” for it give sony a break and let em work at their pace…i think for what its worth they r doing pretty darn good.

  • oh but I would definitely like to see old games have trophies ADDED I’d put that up there with cross chat and making the b/c downloadable again for those who dont have it

    Imagine the replay value

  • any news on MGS4 trophies? or google earth/skype for the XMB?

  • WOW STOP with PS2 Backwards Compatibility, the ps2 is only 99.99 i dont give a sh1t abouth backwards compat, aso the XGC cross game chat wtf, if u wana chat go to the freken chat section u guys ask for lame things, the only thing sonny needs now is to give us an option to change the xmb letters color with out changing the the background

  • We still need:

    Software based PS2 Emulation
    Cross-game voice chat
In-game custom soundtracks supported on all titles (at least while not in story mode)
A more efficient and feature-rich web browser.

  • holy crap.. thats one sick as hell update!! way to go!!!! cant wait for it! especially the dynamic themes!!!!!!

  • Crossgame chat please Eric!

  • When will will developers and designers can upload their own custom avatar? Also are there any development tools to create the dynamic themes?

  • Great Update but one dissapointing thing Still no in game private Party chat please comon Sony it is a popular request.

  • Guys. These people don’t think BC is a big thing to us. We need to let them know that they are wrong and that we want to be able to play our old PS2 titles on our PS3’s.

  • this is great!!!

  • Nice update, but i’m waiting on cross game voice chat :/

  • Nice with all this animated themes. But what all ppl want is Cros-chat/ingame chat. It’s the biggest wish. I really hope you have it in this big Firmware (3.0)

  • when will the firmware be avilable for us all to download

  • AWESOME! heres an idea for a dynamic theme… have one based on inFAMOUS where you can have one background with good Cole with blue lightning flickering and then after awhile have it change to evil Cole with red lightning flickering! thanks!

  • More advertisements, links to the store, and micro-transactions, etc.

  • good update i was expecting another stability update lol

  • Wow looks cool.
The new theme style is awesome.

  • i am expecting the firmware to go live tonight and some dynamic themes on the store tommorrow! :) because my definition of the word soon is in the same week! one has to assume the slims are shipping with 3.00

  • Look to be cool

  • why is everyone asking for INGAME xmb music… whens its there! its up to the devs for the games to allow access to the xmb! the games i play have ingame xmb music… mvsc2, street fighter 4, killzone, what r u people talking about?

  • Someone on YouTube said this is expected to come out Sept 1, the same day as the price drop/PS3-slim. Anyone else hear a date? I WANT THIS NOW! ASAP!

  • What the hell is a “feacher”?

  • i dont no i am thinking the firmware will come live when the slim gets released 2 the market

  • September 1st is the release date for this firmware. Also, the new slim ps3 will sell with the 3.0 firmware installed.

  • Gee, do you want us to buy something at the Playstation store? I don’t want the store icon EVERYWHERE. Why not clutter the XMB even more?

I also don’t like the forced default startup to “what’s new.” I know what I want to do when I turn the machine on. I also think those huge icons are ugly. This goes along with putting that dumb shopping bag everywhere.

Basically, both complaints boil down to forced choices, shameless marketing, and I’m a fan of minimalism.

I do like fixing the clock and the avatars (well, I like that there will be more — I don’t know if I’ll like the selection.)

  • I really like this update, even though in/x-game voice chat or some sort of party system is still not here.

I’m glad that I can finally see my avatar, number of friends and any new messages I’ve received in a single glance. Though I think the interface itslf could have been slightly more elegant.

Also, I would have at least liked to see my current ‘level’ somewhere there. I think trophies/levelling up needs more visibility because I’ve often heard from gamers who own both PS3 and 360 that they don’t feel anywhere near as attached to trophies as they are to achievements. I think you should embed a smaller, slicker version of a trophy card somewhere in that interface.

  • Great job, Eric, that’s what the XMB needed and I can’t wait for the God of War 3 theme day one buy. There’s only one thing that is needed is the much talked about party chat. If you guys can nail that one then the gap will officially be closed between XBL and PSN. PS3 will be the best system this generation period. Again, Great job!!!

  • Btw, I really hope it’s possible to turn off the ticker itself in the new top interface (not the whole thing though). I never use the ugly information board and sure don’t want some more text scrolling on my screen.

  • VERY NICE UPDATE SONY UR THE BEST

  • can someone tell me what is game chat that everyone requesting?

for example i assume its different from SF4 in online matches chatting.

i have never played xbox so i dont know what this is.

  • Sony I would really love to see:

    – Cross game chat or some type of chat while you play, with more than one person.
    – PS2 Compatibility
    – Party Rooms
    – Personalize your friends list more
    – Some more status options
    – More avatars

Are you kidding about this? You can’t download CPU and GPU chips through the internet. Yours has parts of the PS2’s hardware in it.

The 80GB MGS4 version has the GPU, but not the CPU. So no, you can’t download the GPU. The internet just doesn’t have that “feacher” yet.

People are asking for complete software-based emulation of a PS2 on the PS3, using only PS3 hardware for all versions of the PS3.
