Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 Challenge

Hello PlayStation Blog readers! I’m Yosuke Hayashi, producer at Team NINJA (Tecmo). Since the announcement of Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 in March, I’ve been looking forward to sharing more details on the title, so here we are. We received great feedback on our playable demo at E3 (both Ryu and Ayane were playable) and as you can imagine, we are working very hard to finish up the game in time for the fall release.

Since this is the PlayStation Blog, I’m going to refrain from comparing Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 to Ninja Gaiden II (Xbox 360). All you really need to know is that this isn’t just a port and this will be the most complete Ninja Gaiden game released to date. Team NINJA has put out five Ninja Gaiden games in five years and we are confident that this is THE one you want to play and own!

Today, I’d like provide a quick overview on our three sexy, female PLAYABLE characters: Rachel, Ayane, and Momiji.

Rachel: Strong and powerful. Signature weapon – War Hammer. New weapon – Machine Gun!

Ayane: Young, purple-haired female ninja from the Dead or Alive series. Quick. Weapons – Dual short swords and a dagger with a pinwheel carrying her signature iris.

Momiji: Heroine from Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword, who trained under Ryu. How much sexier can a female ninja get? Weapons – Naginata long sword and bow. Check out this video of Momiji:

Each character has its own unique set of weapons, moves and ninpos. If you thought you mastered Ryu, that won’t be enough in Sigma 2! There are plenty of melee and projectile weapons to unlock along the way.

Here’s some fun until next time: On the cover of PlayStation: The Official Magazine’s May 2009 issue, there’s an image of Ryu with his sword standing in the urban landscape. Our artists decided to do a version featuring each of female characters, all for you to download, available exclusively on the PlayStation Blog. We wanted to have some fun with the images, so each picture has three “things” that are different from Ryu’s image. Since Ninja Gaiden is known to have a high difficulty level, this challenge is no different. Some of the differences in the pictures may be unnoticeable to the naked eye, so download the images, look closely, and have fun!

  • Awesome just awesome can’t wait for this game.

  • BRING BACK THE BLOOD FROM NINJA GAIDEN 2. Do not want Ninja Gaiden 2 babies edition for my ps3.

  • I fear for the future of Ninja Gaiden with this Hayashi punk running things. Itagaki, please come back!!! Don’t let Ninja Gaiden become this soft fluffy crap. Why can’t the ps3 get good things? I sure hope Hayashi comes to his senses and adds the blood back in.

  • Alright, who removed half of the blood from the game? I played the game at E3, and I was going like “where’s the other half of the blood splatter? What was the point of removing that much blood?”

Tecmo would be shooting themselves into their foot if they kept this up…I want the game as much as anyone else does, but the cutdown is stupid.

  • Yosuke Hayashi FTW!

  • Totally Sweet Gameplay & Woman

  • ok here goes nothing –

    Rachel –
    – Bullets on the floor
    – Bulletholes on the fence
    – A scar on the statue

    Ayane –
    – Kunai w/ Pinwheel on the fence
    – Red detail on the (flying) car
    – An extra dot on the statue

    Momiji –
    – Braclet/Necklace on the fence
    – Maple leaves replace some of the cherry blossoms
    – The billboard under the statue has changed

    And thats about it
(Wrote this all from my PS3)

  • I think the ones complaining about the blood in the game being cut out are just the little children on these forums (ages 8-18). Adults do not really care much about stuff like that. For us, it is all about the gameplay and storyline.

So Hayashi san, please just ignore the little kids crying about the blood and just make the game the way you wish it to be created. The game will be great either way. :D

And to all the kids whining about it, please grow up and realize there is more to a game than gore. Go play Nanobreaker and you will understand what I mean. lol More gore does not make it a better game.

  • Sure hope this game gets delayed before being released to the states to make it Ninja Gaiden again instead of this goofy crap. Doesn’t Hayashi know that the magic dust is used to cover your tracks and not used as a substitute for blood? No blood = No buy!

  • Ugh. Why did this fool have to tone down the blood? Is he smoking something or what? I sure hope God Of War 3 developers don’t do something as dumb as this. Could you imagine pink clouds coming out of peoples bodies when Kratos tears them apart. I sure hope this Hayashi fellow fixes this before it drops in America. Makes me so sad that Itagaki left the team. Never hand something like Ninja Gaiden to pacifists.

Thanks for all your input. NGS2 will be in full HD 1080p output, with 5.1 surround sound. The trophy function will also be supported.

As for online co-op, there will be voice support. We will release more information on it to come.

  • I found the differences! It was a bit short and easy, but still fun. Thanks. I hope this game will indeed be what the Producer says: the most complete and the one I want to play and own.

  • I hope you developers know how silly it looks to decapitate a victim and see a purple mist even though theirs red blood on the sword. At least make the color of the mist match what spills out onto the sword. If not that, then please delay the North American release in order to add the blood that was in Ninja Gaiden 2. This feels like Lost Planet all over again.

  • I believe true Ninja Gaiden 2 fans can wait a little longer in order to add the blood and gore that Ninja Gaiden 2 had to sigma. Gamers in the U.S. are not that squeamish about blood and gore, especially Ninja Gaiden fans. If sigma is released without the blood and gore, then it will definitely not be worth $60.

So I see how it is. You don’t tone down the overly sexed female characters, you know, the stuff that some people really have a problem with. But, you tone down gore and blood? The stuff that makes Ninja Gaiden what is has been and that no one has issues with. U suckas need to get your head straight and make an equal port of Ninja Gaiden 2. This no blood is just a crappy excuse. Man, Itagaki would never let this kind of crap happen.

  • True that games can be cool without violence/blood/gore, but it seems like you’re making a kids game for an adult audience in terms of style. I don’t mean to offend, just in terms of game design, so please hear me out.

That purple mist takes away the coolness when playing Ryu and Rachel. It looks cool with Ayane and Momiji because they are young Japanese girls.

Ryu and Rachel feel more like adult characters, and blood or RED mist would look cooler and sleeker with those characters.

If blood cannot be done with them, just changing the colour of the mist from purple to red for those characters is just as good looking aesthetically as blood.

I know it may conflict with Red Essence, but for Ryu and Rachel, if you make the Ninpo Essence Purple, then you can change the mist to Red. It doesn’t truely conflict with the colours because Ninpo uses both upgrades Spirit of the Devils (Red) and Jewel of the Demon Seal (Purple), since Blue Healing Essence is based off of Life of the Gods (Blue), and yellow is money of course.

  • will be a demo version on psn?

    @ Takehaniyasubiko

The only interisting thing about the whole game is the gore, and now they take it away, giving one crap excuse after another. We all know removing the gore is about getting a rating other than mature. Purple cloud? Purple? It not a game about Barbie.
The difficulty of this game is for hardcore gamers, and they want gore.

u should know that NG was not really about blood and gore dude, the #1 thing people like about NG was gameplay. If u really like blood and gore, go play Nanobreaker, it has way way more blood and gore than NG2 on X360.

check it out, it wasn’t fun at all, stupid gameplay w/ no dial combo and all u do is press attack button repeatedly, very boring game, but at least it has all the gore and blood u like.
