Hi everyone! This is Daimion Pinnock, Producer for WipEout HD, back to introduce Game Director Tony Buckley. He’s here to tell you about a brand new expansion pack for WipEout HD, as well as its first showing this week at E3!

Hello everybody,

I’m Tony Buckley, Game Director for WipEout HD and I’m pleased to announce that the team here at Studio Liverpool have been busy working on a new expansion pack for your favourite anti-gravity racer.

And what’s more, it is set to be given its first public showing at this week’s E3 expo, so if you’re lucky enough to be attending, make sure you stop by and try it out!

WipEout HD DLC 1 WipEout HD DLC 4

WipEout HD DLC 6 WipEout HD DLC 3

The WipEout HD Fury expansion pack will increase the content of your current game with 8 new tracks, 13 new ship models and 3 new game modes, 2 of which will be available for online play! In addition there will be new trophies to attain, a re-styled front-end and a selection of new & improved multiplayer functionality!

The Eliminator game mode will allow you to release all that pent-up aggression as you use the full arsenal of Wipeout weaponry to destroy your opponents. Forget those racing lines; this is all about destruction, with the victor being the first to reach the target score!

Zone Battle is about risk and reward! Acceleration is automatic as you swoop over zone pads to fill your zone bar. Your choice is whether to use the bar to increase your speed and boost your ship ever closer to the target zone or absorb it to replenish vital lost energy. Warning, avoid the ‘zone barriers’, obstacles left on the track by your opponents as they boost towards the target zone, hitting these can literally destroy your hopes of victory!

Our Detonator mode introduces a brand new ship model to the game that will test both your piloting skills and your shooting accuracy as you accelerate through as many as 14 stages. Score points by destroying the mines that have been strewn along the track and take out the bomb on each stage to earn additional points. The more accurate you are the more points and bonuses you will score!

Just like the original WipEout HD, all the new content will be released in glorious 1080p resolution and will run at a smooth 60fps.

Take a sneak peek at the track and ship visuals in our WipEout HD Fury trailer and selection of screenshots.

Remember, Wipeout HD is available exclusively from PlayStation Store so check it out in readiness for the release of the Fury expansion pack coming this summer!

  • Wipeout rocks! pure and simple. Best PSN game ever!

  • SONY LIVERPOOL – Why can’t you make a Wipeout 2097 HD version!!!!

Street fighter gets a HD make over why can’t you do that with the best wipeout game there ever was?

    Adding the HUD from 2097 just isn’t enough… :(

Oh well just have to keep playing the PSone version for now!

  • New DLC for Wipeout looks owesome but at least add one new weapon plz! :)

  • LOVE WIPEOUT! Can’t wait for this! :.)

  • wow!!! this looks sick!!! who cares how much it costs? it runs at 60 fps and has 1080p resolution!!! i am sure that it will be no more than the original game. awesome!!!!!!

  • I hope the tracks are remakes of the classic circuits!

  • Hot’ness !! more Wipeout HD good’ness, can’t wait.

  • Look Sony! I HAVE MONEY FOR YOU AND I’M THROWING IT IN YOUR DIRECTION IN EXCHANGE FOR THIS GAME

Seriously, just take all the money, it’s yours, just release this game now!

  • This pack looks good but Wipeout HD is unfortunately too difficult for a lot of gamers and that’s put a lot of people off.

The sad thing is, it’s not actually the racing or tracks that are too difficult – it’s trying to pull off the barrel rolls in all the right places. Failure to do so often means a crash and no gold / silver / bronze medal (or trophies)!

I’m voicing my own opinion here, but I would like to suggest that Studio Liverpool should look at removing barrel rolls from the game in such a way as to make the game faster (improved lap times) and also make the medals and trophies more attainable. My suggestion to make this possible would be to add a ‘boost’ button which drains ship energy – similar to Wip3out. Time trials could ensure 5 boosts or so – to cover where barrel rolls would normally be required. Finally Nico may then be beatable…? As far as I can see that’s the only way to improve current lap times and revert to old school anti-G Wipeout racing. I hope you’re listening Studio Liverpool!

    Thanks!

  • Er… Edit post 110 – Zico not Nico! Ha ha – cheers!

  • HELL YES THIS IS GOOD NEWS!!!!!!!!!
this was the first series(game) i have played on the ps1
and i still love the wipeouts!!!

yes it is hard to master wipeout, but when you do you feel like a god!
ps if you have the feeling that al the other guys are going harder then you and your not craching. try to puch the X harder i just found out that the X is not a on/off button but a anolog button, so press it harder makes you go harder. plz dont make this game easy!!

and realy i love the Zone mode it is so adictive! but for the next sone mode plz make it go faster to a new speed, going 15 rounds + to grain 1 speed level is a bit mutch.

Zone Battle was a mode i already had in my mind and i think this will be one of the best modes ever!! thanks alot and you get my mony for sure!

  • be it 4 or 2 tracks,
    I’ll buy this.
I hope it includes new grids too!
    Sweet news!

  • LordVonPastor – rather than go through the mental gymnastics of trying to come up with ways to make the game easier, why not just accept the fact that you need to practice more?

This game got a patch early on because you whiners were always complaining about the difficulty. Well congrats – you can now get medals on campaign time trials and speed laps by lowering the difficulty… no skill required!

And this blog really needs a “Wipeout” tag…

  • Hail the greatest racing game ever!!!

What a way to sky-rocket WipEout into the skies once more! =D

And to people whining the game is hard… It’s WipEout. The learning curve has always been demanding. LIVE WITH IT or get lost =P

I know plenty of people who suffered a lot of difficulties playing with, but with PRACTICE and concentration, this game is fantastic! It demands the most accurate reflexes, developing an efficient racing line, and quick-thinking in managing your pickups. A lot of people have beaten Elite AI on all tracks, and all now agree that it gave them the opportunity to be waaaay better.

So if you find it “difficult” and you want to give up, go play another game, because WipEout will never be watered down for your pleasure.

  • @ triple_lei / Kyonshi. I only play Wipeout HD on Elite because that’s the way I like the AI, I don’t need / want it watered down.

I’ve been playing Wipeout, 2097 & 3 since the PS1. I completed all of them at Rapier & Phantom (as applicable). I also own / have completed Wipeout & 2097 on the Sega Saturn. This should tell you how much this franchise means to me. I can tell you Wipeout ran at ~17fps on the PAL Saturn & 25 on the PAL PSX, while 2097 ran at 25 on both. I know these games, they are hard – but possible and don’t rely on a gimmick like barrel rolls to increase the difficulty.

I’m happy to accept the problem may just be with me and if that means the likes of me get no sympathy and get told to go back to playing Wipeout, that’s fine. Understand this is why you don’t see many people playing Wipeout HD online.

The only reason I’m appealing in this way is because I want Wipeout HD to be what it should have been & thanks to patches / updates – could still be. Anti-gravity racing has never been about barrel rolls until now.

I’d also love to see the original, future-industrial Wipeout tracks & 2097 tracks as DLC, complete with music from Tim Wright / Cold Storage.

  • Actually, now that I think about it… The problem isn’t that barrel rolls are in the game. The problem is that you have to do a barrel roll to get a speed boost. A solution for this could be to turn off the barrel roll boost and add a button to boost (and drain energy) instead. That would allow the show-off’s to carry on as usual (but without the boost). Oh well, enough moaning from me!

  • @LordVonPastor

Barrel rolls are a nice addition to spice up gameplay, its not a problem in itself; you lose shield energy when you use it. If somebody really wanna go showing off, they better think twice before ending screwing themselves up. Therefore i think its a really nice and balanced upgrade to this Wipeout title. You can also turn it off if you don’t like it.

Also i didnt like the WO3 shield energy converted in speed boost. Don’t get me wrong, i love WO3 all the way, but i don’t want this feature to be used again. Barrel rolls and Turbo boosts are just fine and require the good amount of strategy on the track to be used effectively.

  • (continued)

I’ve also been playing all Wipeout titles since 1994, except N64 version. After the average Fusion, its nice to see Wipeout HD back stronger than ever. The only reason why there isnt so much people playing it is probably the younger audience not knowing enough about the Wipeout legacy. Maybe i could be wrong also! But if people are not aware that Wipeout games have always been hard and not for the average player, its understadable that they may find it so hard. This game is serious racing, for serious players, and maybe its one of the few games who doesn’t take people for fools and despises the lazy asses not worthy of it! =P

Finally, didnt mean no offense to you dude, but im just tired about people whining every goddamn game is too hard, but they don’t put the simplest effort to appreciate the real value of it…

  • How did you know it was my favourite anti-gravity racer? ;p

This pack is very welcome, as I can always use another excuse to play my favourite PS3 game. These additions sound amazing, but hopefully there will be new music too, possibly as well as being able to play my own music in the game.

  • You already CAN play your own music in the game…

  • <3 <3 <3

  • @fazuzzu

Dude, are you living under a rock?? xD

Its about time you learn about this feature!

  • Ahhhhh, all of the crafts featured are classics dating from all the way back to the original WipEout (Look at that Icaras, it’s from WipEout 3!).
Hope it gets released unlike it’s counterpart WipEout Pulse.

  • Is Zico going to have another high score for me to beat?
