Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.
In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:
Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)
- Sort your friends via their online status
- Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)
Video delivery service on PlayStation Store
- Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
- Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

I’m not (and so many others of us aren’t) bashing the devs. What I’m ASKING for is COMMUNICATION. Having cross-game chat would be an added perk, but above all else, let us know that you ARE listening to us. We’ve got almost 1,500 comments, and not ONE reply from Sony. Meanwhile (and I know this is comparing apples to oranges) you have 1,100+ comments for Flock!, and Capcom has replied 105 times. Give us SOMETHING Sony. TALK to us, let us know we’re being heard!
well.. the friends list is now messed up.. i want to be able to have them sorted with everyone that is online up top (in alphabetical order) and then again in alphabetical order for everyone that is offline down below that, but i cant do that now (way to go). text chat is nice, but really, you know we want to use voice chat.. 2.71 im looking at you, and last but not least… i want to play music from my xmb in ANY game.. not games that support it only.. and i want to be able to use the feature online (nothing beats listening the the Battlefield: 1942 theme as you roll up a hill in a tank right behind a sniper in BF:BC *and soon to be BF:1943*)
so in closing, some really nice idea’s and features added here guys.. but they really need to be expanded on to really compete with that “other” company

This update is absolutely and undeniably ridiculous. Text Chat? NO!.. voice chat? Hmm.?
Did you seriously just show us in that video that you can now sort your friends by not 1, but 2 options?.. by status and name. Wow. Glad you guys spent time on that.
You know I was looking forward to this update. Granted not everything is a waste, I love some of them, but what I’m trying to get at is that the time spent on some of these tasks could have been put for much better and useful tasks. C’mon it’s been almost 3 years, let’s get moving Sony! I love that you’re continuing to update the PS3 but you need to listen to the public a little better.

Remember, Sony didn’t promise voice chat in this update. People just went and assumed that on their own and then got disappointed.
This is a step in the right direction as far as chat goes. It may not quite be what was hoped for, but we’re headed in that direction. I’d rather get several small well-tested updates than one huge buggy update. Sony are doing things the Google way.
I think the older sorting option should be restored in addition to the new ones for future updates.

Great job, guys. Are you ever going to address the Official PS3 Bluetooth Headset microphone sensitivity inconsistencies? Mine picks up EVERY noise in my house. I can’t even turn up my television.
Maybe that is why you are promoting text chat with this update.
Maybe next time you can make the headset “playable”.

I was inspired to check this blog out by penny-arcade to see exactly what they’re referring to.
What a huge let down. I have been calling my friends and talking to them for 10 minutes to set up games, why didn’t you strive to add voice chat first?I hope this is an April fools joke and you are really adding voice chat.

Wow, really?! No cross-game voice chat. Who knows how long people have been requesting this one, yet it falls upon deaf ears. Blogs and forums have been rumoring it in updates since 2.4. This one should be a no brainer. What’s up guys?

alls we want is feedback. tell us what is going on. what are you even working on? ALSO how about you try debunking rumors before they progress? every site on the web had the rumors about this patch and you sat on your damn hands and let us hope that for the simple reason u didnt debunk it gave it a sliver of credibility. also why is this such a problem? the PSP uses skype. sure you have to pay skype a small fee every year but at least we can voice chat anytime we want during anything we want. this text chat nonsense is a goofy way to market your “new keypads” and you know it. do not begin forcing additional addons upon us like the Wii or Xbox because we all got ps3’s because they are the all in one console. but it has been almost 3 years and we dont even know if you are working on one of the single biggest if not the biggest updates we all want. this update was a slap in the face because of how it was handled. how about some transperancy to what you are really doing? its getting harder geting let down time after time for one reason or another when alls you need to do is listen and talk to us. you value our money now how about the same for our input.

Ok, here’s what Sony really needs to implement to the Playstation Network if they really want to compete with the competition.
-Voice messaging.
-Cross-Game Invite System
-Private Voice Chat (in-game, movie)
Nice one Sony a very nice step in the right direction but i echo what everyone is saying voice chat cross game in game is a must and make this the great platform even better.

listen its very good what u guys done and everything but i was thinking u could increase the maximum number of characters because its really frustrating to be writing a lot looking down at the keyboard then when u look back up at the screen you’ved only written have of what u tought you wrote…. dont get me wrong this new feature is great…. but maybe for 2.71 u could give us just a little more freedom…. also ive heard some rumors about and in-game video chat add on??? if someone could clarify that for me it would be great…. thanks for the good work….

Who the hell wants cross game text chat? Do you know how annoying it is to pause the game just to answer back, if you actually listen to us and put in cross game chat, you might get some better reviews.

In the future is it possible to do a faster MP3 scan? it stinks when I’m listening to a podcast and i have to stop then when i scan to the spot again it takes FOREVER! maybe allow it to remember the spot you stopped and auto resume maybe? Also Is an RSS channel even a possibility? I hope you reply to this so i know if it can be done. Thanks for the update Eric. Take it easy.
i actually liked the text chat crap, but its not for in game chat….. i have to agree its very anoying to pause the game or even hit the ps button just to answer the other guy and even then u can write a whole deal because of the character limit there is…. please i know u guys r not feeing us for ur services on the psn but still this should be a no brainer…. ur leting ur stupid competition take all the good things…. for instance…. why is it that some games come 1080p for Xcrap and that very same game only goes up to 720p for us???? please i would really want to get a feedback from u on this…. and if u did already someone please let me in on it
As an adult I paid over €650 for my ps3 when they first came out,, and I honestly still can’t get over the fact that sony is censoring my text chats haha
Sony can stuck there Ps3! for less than 90cent per week I can use xbox live and it’s simply amazing!!

The two main reasons the upscaling needs to be included in a firmware update are:
1 – There are still a VERY large amount of people who’s televisions only have 480p/1080i & if the game doesn’t natively support 1080i/p, the PS3 will downscale it to 480p.
2 – When a game doesn’t have 1080i/p support & your television is native 1080p… that leaves the scaling job to the television, which in turn adds a great deal of gaming input lag. With the PS3 doing the scaling for 720p only titles, this wouldn’t happen.

Do you have to have people in your friends list to be able to voice chat. I have the Bluetooth and didn’t know if you need people to be in the friends list who are online to have this function to work. Sorry but I just been online for 2 days. Any help would be great!!

I think you can chat to them even if they’re not on your friends list, as you could just simply type in their PlayStation Network Account User Name, with the PS3 Keypad, wouldn’t it be SICK if you could turn voice into text, like talking to it, and it translates it into TEXT!!! Just like a TomTom translates text into Voice but other way round you see, or maybe the PS3 could have both!!!!
