Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.
In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:
Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)
- Sort your friends via their online status
- Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)
Video delivery service on PlayStation Store
- Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
- Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

Downloaded it and it actually crashed my system lost all game data and lost all guitar hero songs and says keep checling HDD and goes into a loop. cant do anything, HELP.

Perhaps if Sony stole and used the exact code to implement such a feature then maybe…but you can’t possibly patent something like cross/in game chat…that in itself would be too general.
So, in conclusion… LOL!
since all we do is complain, I have one for sony. How come when the ps3 first launched it had avatars for every game that was coming in that year, and a few months later they updated it with more symbols for the newer games, (like crash bandicoot), and every since then no new avatars. How about using your home character or something like that, I think thats just lazy tho forgetting all about updating it for newer games.

i’ve seriously stayed quiet thinking that sony would make big moves especially when it comes for firmware update but again this is useless…the last big update was in game xmb…what we need is

By the way – I’m also having the “Can’t playback AAC files anymore” issue.
However – I’ve narrowed it down.
For me – it’s the oldest AAC files I imported from my CDs to my PS3. Newer AAC files that I created with the same bitrate on my PS3 work just fine.
I think the error is in the AAC metadata associated with each file.
If I copy the album folder to my PSP, delete the PS3 folder, and re-import the files, they work. So far, this has “fixed” all of my broken AAC files.
Might be easier than re-importing them from CD, anyway.

The only update I would still like to see is not requiring the console to be online for trophies to work. That was quite an annoying discovery when I started playing games before bothering to connect my PS3 to my home network. It seems to me like that decision leaves out people who generally just play single-player games and don’t bother connecting all the time.

i cant seem to download this update on my ps3 whether its pc method or direct from internet on ps3. my ps3 freezes at 25% this is very annoying and not letting me play online please solve this problem for me somebody please please!!!!!!

It is so easier to select who I want to talk to for a certain reason. e.g. Killzone 2, invite olny those who play K2, so I need to know who is playing K2.

When are game manufacturers going to make it so that multiple people can sign in to a local multiplayer game so everyone can earn trophies? It sucks when I am beating my friends at Buzz but they get the trophies because they are logged in. Xbox has this feature…I’m just saying.

Is anyone else having trouble with 720p after the update to 2.7.0?
I started up my PS3, installed the update and after that I tried to log in to Home, but the picture will no longer be scaled to full screen. I now have a “box” in the upper left corner showing the 720p screen and the rest of my 1080p screen is filled with black.
Same goes with other games (Uncharted, Nooby Nooby Boy etc) and videos – and it should automatically upscale via HDMI, at least it was working flawlessly before that.
Haven’t found any complains on this issue anywhere in this thread so I just want to check if this is a solitary issue or nobody else has noticed it yet?

well, what an impressive update… cross game TEXT chat, this is quite that NextGen experiance I was looking for. This would blow everyone away in ’96 but now … ?
@all that are complainig about censorship in chat:
just throw in some spaces between the letters and everthing will work fine. That’s due to the fact, that cencoring with blacklist/whitelist is way out of date today. To achive this you will need at least some kind of pattern recognition, like evolutionary algorithms, with database synch / exchange with respect to current localisation(en_US).
@Mr. Lempel you are showing good pocker face, while presenting the update. I guess, I would turn red, if I had to present such a poor result. On the other hand, there’s noone sitting in front of you, who might give you a direct response…
The text chat is very good idea. I thank you for it, because I don’t have a headset and that kept me from chatting. I think there’s a few tweaks to be made to the text chat, though. Short messages and censoring in every language are the problems.
-100 letter max messages
-Maybe an ability to make ageratings for chatrooms? That would prevent youngsters hearing from hearing bad cursewords.
-Language-specific censorship. This is a better alternative for the age-rated rooms.

V2.70 has broken my console! I downloaded and installed it yesterday. My machine powered down as usual after the install and won’t fire up again. Just get a green light that flicks back to red after about 5 seconds and nothing on the screen.
Is that supposed to happen? And how am I supposed to feel about the fact that Sony UK want to charge me £145 quid to fix it? I appreciate my warranty ran out in February but that’s like me coming round to your house, smashing your windows and then charging you £50 a pop to fix them!
I rely want to play a PS2 game’s on my ps3(80GB form UK)…so update witch could make that possibile would meak m life better.

Can we please get an option to return the Friends list sort method to how it used to be? There was zero reason to change it to begin with, and both new methods are pretty terrible.

After using the new chat feature i’m liking it quite a bit, the only thing i dont care for is the length per line u can send, and the fact that its censored…
Other than that i think its really great while playin cod i can tell my friends whatever before after even during matched (because i use the onscreen keyboard hella fast haha)
anyways good update, hope to see cross over voice chat enabled in the coming months…

Nice update! Though I would enjoy seeing a simplified text chat interface (kind of like msn or gmail one) that can be accessed faster while in game. Keep up the updates and the good work! When are we getting music playback while in-game? :)
The text chat character limit is really stupid… you can even form a complete sentence without flooding the channel…

PS3 firmware update v2.70 made all my NAS uPnP Media Server Files show as unsupported data!
I just upgraded my PS3 to the latest v2.70 tonight and now almost every file says unsupported data when accessed via the uPnP media server in my Netgear ReadyNAS Duo. I am spewing! Not happy Jan!!! I had everything running beautifully and then update and now my NAS is useless for the PS3.
First I thought the data on my NAS had got corrupted. Never did I expect it would be the PS3 update. So I played the NAS videos on my laptop. They worked fine. No corruption. Then I put a video from my NAS that said unsupported data on a flash stick and inserted it into the PS3. I was surprised that it played fawlessly.
So it is true! PS3 firmware update v2.70 will more than likely stuff your ability to play files from your Network Attached Storages uPnP Media Server. It did for me and several other people with different NAS’s posting on the Maxconsole Forum.
I hope this gets fixed soon. I just wish I could downgrade back to V2.6 so I could play my files again! PLEASE SONY FIX THIS UPDATE!!!

But lets not forget that we ps3 users have fetures that LIVE hasnt…HOME,Internet browser(which has been given major updates in the past few months…)

Mr . Eric Lempel you are like the only hope we gamers have besides Jeff to get this issue finally resolved. We gamers have been begging Sony to include chat all through the system basically like the xbox360. Why is it that you guys are not able tell us something about this particular feature. Are you having trouble still with it, is it even being tried? Can you at least tell us something about why this feature is not being allowed. You say that video backup was a big complaint but i believe that xmb chat and in game chat is one of the highest complaints on Sonys list. The PS3 is suppose to be a small Supercomputer why cant we get this feature. Thank you.

Think about how ridiculous it is. We can already have text and chat in a chat room and there is Home. This is no different. What we need is in game chat and text. Why would i start a game just so i can text outside of it. The xbox360 still has the upper hand with the chat feature not being tethered to only gaming it is throughout the entire system. Are Sony engineers fooling around. Could that be the case or the PS3 just cannot do it, and Sony wont come out and say so. Anyway game on.

I’m still puzzled how the hell the programmers at SCE came up with that stupid text chat line limit. What’s the point? I’m sure there’s a design decision behind this, but WHAT? I’d really like an answer, just to get an idea what’s going on inside their heads. My first guess would be that it might prevent server flooding, but then again you just upped the 1MB message attachment limit to 3MB, so that can hardly be it.
I’m left to think that the developers haven’t event tried out the features them selves, and haven’t got a clue about what it’s going to be used for.
It’s definitely not the same team behind the XMB that made this crap.
You’ve got this hip blog and are now officially down with the kids. Next step is to actually *read* it, maybe give us a comment on our feedback, and preferably fix all the text chat issues mentioned and push and announce a firmware update.
Oh and btw the text chat “folder” is broken; it doesn’t open like all other folders, but clears the screen and draws a menu on the left side. Please fix this too. The icon sucks too — it’s too big first of all.
What a surprise! 2.70 broke my streaming media again! All of my videos are listed as “Unsupported Data”. My videos are stored on a Linksys NAS200…

I really wished that Sony would consider making noncritical updates optional or at the least allow users to choose which features they want installed.
The content from the last two updates have done nothing but add items to my PS3 that I have no intertest in and find very annoying. Nothing in 2.70 interests me either and it’s extremely frustrating that I have to download or I’m not allowed online anymore.
It’s one thing if the update is to address a critical issue with the XMB or the hardware, but that hasn’t been the case. I hate trophies and have no use for them what so ever yet now they are on my PS3 and I can’t get rid of them or even at the least turn off the notifications.
Would it be so hard to give people options instead of forcing things down their throats? Before any comments about segmenting the userbase, that isn’t an issue if not everyone uses these features.
I’m pretty fed up with all this unwanted bloatware being added and since I’m not allowed to get online unless I do these upgrades I just won’t go online with my PS3 anymore.

The thing is, the biggest complaint is that the 2.5 year old service is lacking something that the other (albeit paid)service had from day one. And if price is the issue, I honestly wouldn’t mind paying less than a dollar a week for a superior service. Cut out three 20oz sodas PER MONTH and you have the spare change needed to pay for it.

It’s very hard to understand what you’re trying to write here, but the main thing I saw was, “it is confirmed that is in development.” WHERE IS THIS CONFIRMED? The biggest problem I have with Sony right now ISN’T that we don’t have cross-game chat, but rather that we have no word from them saying ‘yes, we hear you’. A simple ‘yes, we’re working on it’ or, ‘no, it can’t be done’ would stop a good portion of the complaints. COMMUNICATION IS KEY IN CUSTOMER SUPPORT/CARE.

Yes, and they also have features that gamers really want that the PS3 doesn’t have, as well. This includes Netflix instant watch capabilities, cross-game and party chat, cross-game invites, and (at least it seems this way to me) they inform their community earlier and respond better to issues than the PS3 counterpart. Now, the 360 has many drawbacks as well, but they still lead (IMHO) when it comes to online gaming. IF WE GOT CROSS-GAME CHAT, I FULLY BELIEVE THE PS3 WOULD SURPASS AND EVENTUALLY DOMINATE THE XBOX 360.
