Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.
In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:
Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)
- Sort your friends via their online status
- Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)
Video delivery service on PlayStation Store
- Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
- Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

Ok…rewatch the video. Cross-game chatting with 2.70 is ONLY for text. That’s half the reason there’s 1,400 comments. People are VERY disappointed that cross-game VOICE chat was left out of the update.

personally i dont like this update its kinda pointless other than the text chat but when are these guys gana make an update include music playing in the backround while playing?

Just wanted to give you some feedback- Hope you or one in the company have a chance to read this- The improvements to PS3 are great to see- I’m a big fan of my PS3 and love the updates along the way… that said there are a ton of requests that we PS3 owners have and hope the OS developers are working on… I’m not here to chide Sony or you at all but I was wondering why you don’t put a video of this up on the PSstore? You could integrate Christina Lee or Veronica Belmont into this rather nicely- Or even some other spokesperson (such as yourself).
I don’t understand why we PS3 owners need to go online with our PC’s or Macs to look at this video- You could title the video ‘The exciting new features of firmware 2.7!’ With the hotties doing the talking and explaining then it would drum up even more enthusiasm for the PS3 in the community. (Any other PS3 owners who want to see this then please post a message that says something like : I agree with Hanacoo’) so this request gathers momentum. Thanks alot Eric and looking forward to the next update.
@1397 To answer my own question, this feature apparently did not make this update. On the official Sony PlayStation website, they no longer list it as a feature:

Ok now were gettin somewhere but instead of the text chat put a voice chat that the players dnt have to be on the same game to talk. U could put a party on the friend list n then u could talk with them while u n others are playin diff games.Now that would be awesome…Tnx if u do this…
so so update but a couple stuff i would have liked more like: you can plsy music in the background,CROSS-GAME VOICE CHAT,ect… come on guys every update i get disapointed im starting to like my xbox better these days!

Awesome! I love the text chat, it’s an instant response and it’s easier to click the PS Button to go straight too it, and STILL access the XMB!
Faster and smoother XMB, the new trophy – symbol to see if they have it, and updated browser!

Can someone at sony please buy an xbox live membership and see whats going on over there i have both systems while i prefer sony i have purchased many xbox games because of the way i can interact with my friends its light years ahead of ps3 well mabey the same guys on the ps3 board are the same guys that just released spongebob songs on rockband what a joke !!

DUDE!!! you guys are awsome!!!!! i no that one thing all me and my friends want are to be able to listing to music while we play games. once we get that ps3 will be way more better than x box than it already is.

Any one else experience not being able to play Divx encoded video after update. it i will play MPEG2 but lists all the Divx ones as unsupported
The Remote Play function is still partially broken. Sync a PSP and and turn on Remote Start and then Remote Play in the menu and those features work fine.
BUT…power down the PS3 and then turn off the main rocker power button on the rear. Then turn it back on. Remote start no longer functions. Turn on the PS3 and attempt Remote Play from a powered up state. It will not work. You must resync the PSP and PS3 under Remote Play. It doesn’t drop it from the menu as a Synced PSP but the process still has to be repeated.
Remote Start and Remote Play work fine as long as the system is not completely powered down and then turned back on. Please note these issues have existed ever since Remote Play/Start was instituted. Also the test system is a 60GB US model.
How about giving australia an update for Call of duty so we can get a green server FOR ONCE!!!

This is awesome. I just hope they get in-game chat rooms, so you can chat with people when they are playing other games. like on 360 private chat.
Just updated my firmware to 2.7 today. after rebooting the system it got to the Sony logo and video froze….however the sound was still working. Video works during diagnostic( holding the power button down for 5 seconds until hearing the beep twice and getting to the diagnostic menu)….which make me believe it has todo with the firmware. anybody have any thoughts?

I am a grown-up gamer and don’t exactly communicate with others on the PS3 — I use my phone or Skype for that — so the text chat feature is useless to me.
I think a big factor in releasing text before voice chat was the fact that Sony just released the keypad controller peripheral but a couple months ago; this might sell some of those.
The feature that I beg Sony to please come up with is a revised navigation system for music, trying to sort through thousands of files one at a time doesn’t really work. Please, also add some sorting. There is so much great potential in the PS3 as a catch-all media hub that its a shame that they don’t focus on that more. Also, let me listen to my music while I navigate the Store, Browser, or *GASP* play a game.

Party Voice chat in game and cross game, thats what most of the people want! If it’s a money thing don’t worry we will pay for it. Charge $15 a year just for that feature. If half the ps3 owners buy in thats something like $150 million a year. I think that would be enough to cover your costs. It is not just a highly asked for feature, it is everything!!!! Don’t waste any time, add this feature now or continue to watch people sell/not buy the ps3 to get an xbox 360!
Wow, this update was already a let down but the bricking of systems that’s happening to people using PS2 to PS3 controller converters is boggling.
So yeah, if people haven’t updated yet. Be careful if you use an adapter for an arcade stick because you risk the PS3 freezing during the update. Otherwise you’ll be paying $150 to get your system fixed.
Still not option to turn off the clock in the upper right. Still no more avatars or custom avatar ability. :(
hey, I really like the addition to being able to talk to your friends list while online, but I think it would be an even better improvement to enable voice chat while in game, it would be so much more conivenient, since you could play the game and talk to your friends seemlessly. The text chat is a great addition but not for in game. If I’m thinking the same way everyone else is, I don’t think any of us would wanna have to pause the screen every 5 – 10 mins to send a response to the question you were just asked, or what have you. I’m not trying to bring down the latest update. Playstation 3 has come a LONG way since launch and I couldn’t be happier with my system. I just think for convenience sake adding a chat room in game for VOICE would be an even bigger step. Anyways keep up the good work can’t wait for the next update!

also not sure if he will see this but in response to what static3d had said about organising music and media, if you go to the music tab of the XMB and hit triangle, you will see at the top something called group options (square I beleive) anyways you can sort your music how you preferance in that menu. The music in my hard drive is sorted by Artist and you can do that for all media types. its a good thing to no for those who were wondering if that was possible.
I can see the future now. I’ll be TALKING to a friend using Cross Game Party Voice Chat. A thought will suddenly hit me. Hey Joe, you remember all the YEARS we wasted waiting for this feature on the PS3. He’ll laugh and say “No, I never bought one cause it wasn’t backwards compatable, but guess who’s on xbl tonight?” Your market share is not asking, they are flat out telling you ENOUGH! Give us a PRIVATE VOICE CHAT IN AND CROSS GAME or buy and xbox and play with us. lmao at the guy who thought this would fly.

Thanks for the update Sony, though I must agree with those here. Some of the simplest requests often are neglected. People clearly want cross game communication (voice and text).

Wow. U ppl obviously don have law degrees. I’ll fill u in. Microsoft has copyrights on the cross game voice chat and party system and stuff like that. So Sony has to ease their way into this and find a way to do it that doesn’t violate microsoft’s patents. So how bout instead of complaining u do something useful and figure out how to get around the patents yourself. Cause that’s wat Sony is doing and when they find a way to change it to voice they’ll add it in.It may never get changed. But I’m happy with this. It’s a start and it made many long strides. This is a cool update but you might as well have added voice chat and mail like the 360 has had standard since it came out.
