Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.
In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:
Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)
- Sort your friends via their online status
- Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)
Video delivery service on PlayStation Store
- Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
- Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

I’m pretty sure he’s talking about when the battery dies for good. And assuming that’s the case, you can get replacement batteries online…just search for it. All you have to do is take the controller apart and put the new battery in. A whole lot cheaper than chucking the whole thing and buying a new one.

This is a horrible update next to 2.60. i was expecting in game video chat so i can talk to my friends when they’re playing different games,but i can’t. And the 16 people text chat is so useless. WE WANT IN GAME AUDIO CHAT

Cool. I will use this a lot i just wonder if it wil show up if someone is saying something using that pop up message box in the top right? anyone know if it will have this function?

Text chat really. I could do the same thing sending people messages. You guys have got to stop working around the issuse we want voice chat, in-game and cross-game. How are you ever gonna beat Xbox with that. I rotting for you but you guys have to step up.
how about voice chat .i may hate xbox but since day 1 xbox has been set up to voice chat with friends even in single player games.not trying to dog you sony but come on get with the program really.

ALSO! and update for trohpy’s! i love trophy and I cant play my old ps3 games anymore because i have no reason too play it without any trophys. a patch that adds trophy’s to old games would be great, say Mortal Kombat II or Street FIghter II HD would be great too, and more games.

after so many recharges the ps3 controller’s battery will wear down and eventually the only way to use it would be to keep it plugged into the USB port. and Resident Evil5 blows away Killzone2.
What about cross game voice chat? You need to make that happen. Other systems got it, you’re lagging behind Sony.

look i have a 360 and the big diff between the online is the ability to send voice invites and party chat or atleast voice chatting while playing diff games, me personally, do not want to send a bunch of chats by text, it’s inconvinient and time consuming, step your game up or you will fall further behind, i like that it is free but you can give us chat since we all have to use highspeed anyway it will cost you guys nothing more

accesing xmb ingame is just so slow!!
i hate when im watching a video and then go to xmb is pauses the video i hate that!! we should be able to have an option to activate or deactivate that feature… having our friends list sort by offline status is just annoying!! and another thing i hate that my ps keypad truns off automatically i just hate that.. i really love my ps3 but there are some features that are missing i hope you get my comment chears great job ps3 rules!!

When will we have PS2 software emulation??? I am very frustrated that my new PS3 can’t play PS2 games. All PS3s at the store can’t play older games.
i really thought this update would put sony over the xbox live but once again sony fails to do so what the hell is a text chat room way to go sony for leting us down once again
by the way we should be able to use text messaging when using our profile on a pc and be able to send and recieve text there to our friends online you just missplaced where you should use text it takes to long to go from in game to text to back to a game
To tell you the truth this update is nothing but a waste of time to me. If I want to chat I use my phone. I if want to watch a movie I put in a DVD.
The only updates I’m interested in are the ones that allow me to play more of the PS2 games I already own. You’d think with Ratchet & Clank being one of the PS3 launch titles you’d be able to play the older ones on the PS3 but maybe my logic is faulty.
Sweet new update but you really need to add hulu as an app that would make the ps3 so awesome and maybe add pandora.

Chat – during games and save downloaded movies to external device… That’s it? Who cares? Who wants to chat via TEXT while you’re fragging some monsters? I’m busy!
How about MKV playback — THAT would be useful. Or how about the ability to get/play/view files from a windows or Linux/Unix share? That would be useful. How about being able to read a device that’s NOT in the $hitty FAT(32) format? ext2, 3 or 4? Or, at least NTFS… FAT(32) won’t give you > 4GB file size… These are useful things, chatting while playing a games is useless.
I hope the next update includes a new message indicator. The current new message box dissapears after a few seconds requiring one to constantly check their friends list for new messages. More flexible navigation with messaging would be nice too. And the ability to leave longer subjects as well. Minor requests i know, but things I would like to see

Just had a 13 people chat today, Was a lot of fun. everyone had a blast, just chatting bout random stuff, telling jokes,
I got too know the people on my buddy list a hell of lot better.

I HAVE tried the text chat feature, and I’m still not impressed. While it’s true that I can chat with so many people now, I’m not going to. Why? Because I’m too busy playing my games on my gaming console. I play FPSs mostly on the PS3. I have NO time to stop mid-game and shoot someone a text, or catch up on what everyone else has said. If I do that in the middle of COD, I’ll end up dead quicker than quick, and probably twice over by the time I get back to the game. In game texting is GREAT for a turn-based RPG or something similar, but even then, I don’t want to pause/leave my game to text someone when I could just talk to someone with a mic.
I need more features!!! Back Me Up Sony! I keep telling everyone 2 get rid of their X-BOX 4 A PS3, but u gotta spice it up a little! make them HATE X-BOX!!! I know u can do it Sony! I know thhis device has A LOT of potential processing power just waiting 2 b unleased against microsoft!!!!!!!
it takes forever to download… the only thing i really want is to be able to listen to music thats on the hard drive while playing any game like on xbox
Almost 1400 post,that’s got to be the new ps3 blog record.
I sent a lengthy email a few months back about backing up individual video files and the response I got was that it was forwarded on to the appropriate people. So I’m happy to hear I can now put by external drive to use, backup my videos, free up space on my drive and most important finish downloading the Speed Grapher series. Thanks so much, it’s awesome to know Sony is listening to its base. I will continue to sing the praises of all things Sony and PS3 much to the chagrin of Xbots everywhere.
I think there’s something that’s just pitiful. Despite nearly 1,400 comments, most asking (some nicer than others) for cross-game chat, we haven’t even had recognition from Sony about this. It’s been 24 hours since the news dropped, and not even a nod our way. I’d be happy with them coming out and giving a simple “yes” or “no” on the subject. A “we’re working on it” or, “it can’t be done” would be fantastic. I don’t need a date, just give us recognition. Let us know that yes, you ARE listening to us!

Why has the .Acc for music playback been removed? I had to remove about 100 songs? any answers?

Has anybody figured out how this works yet? I have some purchased (i.e. encrypted) videos on my PSP – but can’t seem to transfer them to my PS3. I’d love to transfer them to the PS3 so that I can back them up there, instead of using Media Manager for PSP.
I have this feeling that what this means is if I buy a video on the PlayStation Store for PSP (via the Sony Media Manager) but don’t download it, I can download it to the PS3 instead.
Is there anyone who can explain *exactly* how this works? I haven’t really seen an explanation of this yet.

i though the new update said u can talk to your freinds while you are in different game then they are but when i go to start a new chat it only lets me do text chat
How about letting us backup/restore demos the same way as those videos?
Eric Lempel thanks for the new feature of chatting but i have to say one thing i dont like about it is that you can only type a limited amount of letters and also i thought the voice chat could be used when in game or something if you can mine is not working, and if that wasn’t what you meant then please let us have private voice chat across games or even in the same game thank you.
And keep up the good work those other consoles dont got nothing on you guys lol
