Hi everyone, we’re adding some great new features with the next PS3 firmware update (v2.70) that will continue to enhance your connected experience on the PS3. The 2.70 update brings a new Text Chat feature that enables you to communicate online with your PlayStation Network friends. Now, you’ll be able to chat with up to 15 online friends using the Wireless Keypad, on-screen keyboard, or other compatible keyboard peripherals. Not only can you chat with your friends instantly, but you can also access Text Chat while playing PS3 games and even participate in up to three chat rooms at once.
In addition to Text Chat, we’ve added a few more enhancements:
Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)
- Sort your friends via their online status
- Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)
Video delivery service on PlayStation Store
- Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
- Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback
For a quick preview of Text Chat and some of the other 2.70 features, check out this video:
The 2.70 update will be released soon, and as always, we look forward to reading your feedback.

this update is godly thank you sony and for the guys who think negative about this update go screw yourself
No In-Game Chat* Sony, I see, listening to us PSN Users? huh? ***Voice Chat, Not Text***
and im sorry xbox fans microsoft isint doing so well
There are some more features with this update:
When you compare people’s trophy lists you usually saw 0% with a game you have but the other person didn’t have or simply didn’t play yet. That has changed. When a person doesn’t own the game you’ll get to see “-” next to the name of the game instead of 0%
Another feature has been mentioned, haven’t test it out myself, you can now see when you download something, how long it approximately takes until the download is ready.
Loading profiles are going quicker.
And you can copy and paste text from your PS3 browser, unfortunate no direct links.
Wonderful update if you ask me and the Americans even have an extra feature for their video’s, which the rest of the world doesn’t have.
Can we stop the whining now, please?
im sorry xbox fans microsoft isint doing so well.
thats great sony, but i want in game music for every game.
extravegan
Nicely put i would have to agree with you completely. All those xbox fanboys should just give up trying so hard to convince people that the xbox is better because if it was you wouldn’t be trying so hard to convince people, so just go back to your xbox site and stop coming to the PLAYSTATION site to post your idiotic comments. Better yet keep all your comments to yourself and just go play your xbox before it crashes.
I think this latest update is Sony telling us that they can’t do X-game voice chat, for whatever reason. Either the PS3 just can’t handle it (have you noticed how laggy the XMB can be when in some games), or else the way it works is patented by someone (cough, Microsoft, cough). I think I heard rumblings about this some time ago. I would bet that IF X-game chat ever comes it si markedly different that how it is accomplished on the Xbox.
1256 comments on one post… Hint for Sony I guess.
As for my part I think it was good update, voice chat would be good to have but can wait for that.
For me … better browser would be better approach to clients, thinking aside from gaming machine, some families starting to use PS3 as home entertainment for blue ray + photo album + movie maker (youtube upload plz) + music players, media server player? + internet.
Dunno if its related to contract issues but the features on PSP should be also available on the PS3, like Skype and the Radio.
Where is cross game voice chat AKA Party mode? Can some one at Sony answer why it is taking so long time? It is the number one thing that is really needed to really make PSN shine over the competitors.
I would really love to get an answer from the Sony firm developer team why it hasn’t been done yet?
Wow, over 1200 comments.
Censorship? In 2009, Really? I know it’s a family system and Sony is family friendly. But really I don’t need a big brother censoring a text chat. Let me at least select a family mode that would have censorship, or a non-family mode to turn it off.
Post 1260 see post 1258…
the only thing the xbox fans say is the xbox is better but they cant come up with any reasons and examples
COULD WE PLEASE GET MORE MUSIC VISUALIZATIONS THAT ACTUALLY MOVE TO THE MUSIC. THE MUSIC PLAYER NEEDS TO BE UPDATED!!!
Now my ware is firm.
Cummon guys lets keep it on topic. if we have a mature discussion about this maybe Sony will listen. At least we can call them on it WHEN they don’t listen if we post responsibly.
Why does the Playstation 3 only get an update what about the psp and all the dissapointed psp owners

Can I get an comment from firmwire guys?
This is a shady FW.
One one had you have a New Chat Room feature, which is much better than Sending TXT on PSN and having your in-game-XMB forzzen from time to time.
But on the other hand it makes no sense to have a in-game-text-chat b/c you have to:
Pause the game > Press (PS) Button > Chat > Press (PS) > Get back to game > Press START
Voice chat can be accomplished easily, and nothing from PlayStation Network servers is required. The users who Opens the In-Game-voice-Chat has to host the chat room and there should be a limit of 4-5 users per-chat and only upto 1 voice chat room per-user-atm.
part 2:
Are we ever going to have :
-In-Game Voice Chat Rooms?
-Send Pictures while in Game?
-See the In-Game-Screenshots feature being used?
-Send Voice ( 30 Second ) messages?
-Send 10mb videos to friends? (PS Eye Videos)
I Mean come on, if you guys actually read these posts and forums posts and did the things we wanted Your console would be number 1 over wii or 2nd.
1.)Company Makes Console
2.)Users buy console
3.)Users ask for more features
4.)Company makes those features
5.)Users download and enjoy those features
6.)A Users Friend comes over and see the features
7.)That friends gos out and buys a unit
-Repeat step 2-7 as needed
Wait doesn’t it include Video/Audo chat aswell? That’s what he said and that’s what it displayed on the video.
Will voice chat be up to 16 people too? Now that would be fun…
@KingCobra1971
If you don’t like your PS3 or its games then why does cross-game voice chat matter to you? You said the games are mediocre, so obviously how the PSN works shouldn’t matter. Of course, it works great for me.
And it is an opinion when YOU think a game is better than an other game. I think Gran Turismo is the best racing franchise out there, but that is my opinion and I could go on all day quoting stats to back up my opinion, but it does not change the fact that others may prefer other racing games.
And since when did things like cross-game voice chat, or even online gaming, become what gaming was about? When I grew up cross-game voice chat meant you talked to a guy using another arcade cabinet and multiplayer was only ever done on the same system. Your desires are not what gaming is about.
What is the xml id for the new “Chat Room (Text Only)” icon so we can update our PS3 themes?
should have started with voice chat rooms, but at least its a start. I expect the voice chat feature to be added on the next firmware update though, so don’t disappoint.
<3 PS3
It’s not what I expected and I’m not paying much attention to in game chat but whatever… It’s a good update anyway.
What I’d like to see in the next update
– MKV support
– Redesigned in game XMB : with less options, take a look at X360 for instance.
lmao its been about time for an update and I can see where this is going, if you havent noticed they are trying to promote their keypad for the playstation 3 controller. I mean it is useful but i mean, damn i think i have carpel tunnel from typing on my phone and regular keyboard.
sry for double post but are we going to have to wait another 3 months for the next firmware?
in my opinion, this is what will happen
at e3 sony will announce cross voice chat and cross game invites as features of a subscription based psn, there will still be the regular psn with all the features we have now for free, but for those hardcore who want more and want psn to be more like the other service, they will have to pay just like the other service
i believe sony has to draw the line somewhere and this is where it will be
of course its all just my little opinion

“the only thing the xbox fans say is the xbox is better but they cant come up with any reasons and examples”
+ cross-game chat, multiple people in said chat
+ some of the exclusive titles
+ better (IMHO) chat-pad positioning (PS3’s is awkward at times)
+ better (it seems) communication when it comes to updates.
+ BC with many games
+ built-in memory card support
+ easily upgradable HDD
– high failure rate
– no Blu-Ray support (they had HDDVD, but we all know what happened there)
– not Bluetooth capable
– $50/year online play
– no built-in controller battery. Either you have to buy a PlayNCharge kit, batteries, or a battery pack/charger.
These are the things the AVERAGE fan looks at. Not even going to go into processors, RAM and the like.
And to clarify, I’m not demanding Sony give us cross-game chat NOW; all I’m asking for is a simple “yes, we’re working on it”, or “no, we can’t do it.” That would get rid of a good bit of the anger seen here in the comments and other forums.
You “look forward to my feedback,” huh? I doubt that.
I spent a couple hours using the Text Chat feature last night, and it has two MAJOR problems:
1. The max length of a single post is RIDICULOUSLY short.
2. The auto-censorship program works HORRIBLY! It often censors parts of full words that it thinks are dirty, i.e. episodes appears as e***odes. A friend was trying to say “put all” about something, but accidentally left out the space. It appeared as “****ll” because of a SPANISH word! It also censors out “idiot” but not some other words with a higher potential for serious offense, including “hell” and “Christ.”
In short, the Text Chat feature needs some SERIOUS help, like the ability to recognize when something is part of a larger word more often (it works sometimes, like you can type “assassin” no problem, which I found VERY surprising), and the ability to set the intended language of a chat so it isn’t censoring out innocent-looking stuff.
It also censored out HUGELY out-dated derogatory terms that I didn’t even know WERE derogatory, suck as “chink” (legitimate use: “a chink in his armor” and “Jap” (currently a common shorthand that isn’t mean as derogatory at all).
1278 post incredible, this has to be a blog high.
sry for triple post, but based on the video you can obviously see how long it will take to type that lol.
I find the lack of a response from Sony on this topic very troubling. Maybe cross game voice chat is not possible on the PS3 and this was a lame attempt at making up for that MAJOR flaw. I think it’s time we all sell our PS3’s and take our gamer dollars where the features we want are.
I wasn’t done. Stupid post size limit…
I do have one positive thing to say for this update: I appreciate the copy/paste feature for the internet browser. The lack thereof had been a real pain in the butt to me, and I’m glad it’s FINALLY there.
Overall, though, this update was very underwhelming and only marginally superior to the complete GARBAGE that was update 2.6. What you REALLY need to do is stop working on all this nearly useless junk and finish the PS2 emulator for update 3.0. This is an especially logical step now that the PS2 finally got its long-overdue price drop. MAKE IT HAPPEN!
Wow 1,278 users comments and not a SINGLE reply from Mr. Lempel or any other Sony rep. That’s setting a new benchmark for “unprofessional” if you ask me.
When users – HUNDREDS of not thousands of users – are keep asking for a particular feature for the product your company sold them, there are only 3 reasonable responses:
1) We’ve heard you and we’re working on it.
2) We’ve heard you and it’s not something we have the time/interest to do.
3) We’ve heard you but it’s just not technically possible to implement on the PS3
In either case, Eric/Sony, YOU NEED TO AT LEAST RESPOND. It’s called Basic Customer Service.
@Ratchet426
LOL.
@Ratchet
Thats real talk homie.
Why would you release only text chat where is the voice!!!
Its crazy i, just got a 360 a week ago and i see the drastic difference when it comes to online features. can someone please make a hack so u can use xbox live on ps3 lol.
So, while I do enjoy the prospect of the Text Chat, the filters are absurd and the character length per line is obnoxious at best. I think that people should be allowed to chat as they see fit for their surroundings, including vulgarities and such. It’s not Sony’s job to control what we say. The character length is much more of a minor gripe, but still something I’d like to see expanded.
While i guess this is a nice update (for some, i couldn’t care less personally) i still have to ask, when are you going to return PS2 Backwards Compatibility?
I’m sure you’ve seen the polls lately, B/C is the most wanted feature, and 65% of people say on some polls they wouldn’t own a ps3 without one, can’t you figure out how many people your pushing away for removing PS2 B/C?
Those gamers either stick with the ps2 or go to the other systems, we all know this, why not return it now?
Are you afraid of hurting ps2 sales?
You do realize those people you push to ps2’s may never upgrade to the ps3 or even ps4 over your actions don’t you?
I’m really hoping you announce something involving this at E3, i really don’t want the ps3 to lose it’s fanbase.
@Mugen078
I AGREE about the .MKV support, this is a MUST
there should be voice option too not one where you NEED the camera
I’ve been lucky enough to be able to own all three next-gen systems (even if Wii is only there for motion sensing and little else). I bought the PS3 last, not because I felt it was such an inferior system, but rather I had just gotten a HD-capable TV. In comparing all three systems, the pros and cons knock the Wii out of contention with the exception of party games (ie holding a house party and passing around the Wiimote)
That leaves the 360 and the PS3. The pros and cons on it, IMHO, make it fairly close as to which system is “better”. I honestly believe that were Sony to release a cross-game chat feature, even if it only allows two people per channel, then it would blow the 360 away completely. The only reason, at this point, that I still use the 360 as much as I do is because I’m able to play games and chat with my friends. Not text with my friends, but talk. Texting in a FPS gets you killed…every time.
Trust me on this…cross-game chat WILL sell systems. MS will be dealt a HEAVY blow if that feature is made available to the PS3 as well.
I am glad there are 3 gaming services and that I have all of them because i would be pissed with this update. Its crazy, why cant you people at sony just answer if you are working on certain features because Xbox is killing yall when it comes to live. At least keep the customers updated, because I feel like we deserve for the $600 system yall put out.
I think its awesome, What really bugs me is that METAL GEAR SOLID 4 GUNS OF THE PATRIOTS Doesnt have the ability to let us play our own music…and yet Killzone 2 does…
1300 comments(nearly)????????? ;D WOW!
Yeah PLEASE bring back PS2 playback on the PS3, that is all i want really. Not bothered about all this MSN/xBox LIVE Chat rubbish :-/
where is my xmb in game cross chat sony?
we are asking u to shine sony, shine baby!!!!
WHERE IS THE VOICE CHAT? There are several people that are responsible for several bad decisions on the part of the PS3 that should be fired and those people are as follows. Whoever thought up this text chat thing, whoever decided it was a good idea for the usb ports on the PS3 to NOT charge things when the system is powered off, whoever decided it was a good idea to include a 4ft usb cable for charging controllers and finally whoever decided to not include a headset with the PS3, I’m sure there are others.. feel free to post your ideas community ;)
