PlayStation Expands to Latin America

Buenos Dias PlayStation fans!

I’m Mark Stanley, Director and General Manager for Latin America at SCEA. I’m thrilled to announce that today PlayStation is officially expanding into Latin America!

So this means that you can now purchase any of the three PlayStation platforms, our library of software titles – such as Resistance 2 – and even the latest peripherals, including our Bluetooth Headset, in 13 countries across Latin America. We’re also working on providing access to PlayStation Network in select countries.

This is such an exciting opportunity and we’re looking forward to providing social entertainment and gaming experiences you can share among your friends and family around the world. This expansion is the direct result of feedback we received from you and we’re proud to deliver PlayStation products and services to enable you to easily connect, play and communicate with one another.

As a native of Costa Rica with many years working directly in the region, I know Latin America holds much promise of growth for SCEA. Muchas gracias to all of you in Latin America and around the world for your support!

Viva PlayStation!

  • Great news,

I’m from Dominican Republic and i’m such a fan that i have the PS3 2 days after launch (have my sister to buy for it, paypal transfer rocks). I’ve happy to enjoy all sony features since i can get to US and buy games etc, but every now and then there’s a title which is out of my schedule and i have to pay pretty much the 30% more expensive (shipment and handling).

Now i live in Argentina and here is even worst, double the price plus you get the games 2 weeks after everybody.

None the less on both countries there’s a huge community to PS3 owner.

Will nice to get my credit card to work in the PlayStation Store.

    Thanks SONY.

  • Hey Sony, bring PSN to Brasil !!!!

  • Great news!!!

    Priya.

  • gratz to you latin american people :)

  • Nice to see good old CR made it, finally.

  • Hey Mark can you hook me up with a job @SCE Latin America? Yo hablo espanol, eu falo portugues, I speak english :D

  • For all those whothought that Brazil was included on the list. I’m sorry but Ithink we’ll still be out. Unfortunately, because of piracy, I think Sony will still get us (brazilians) out of the party. But I heard they’ll launch PS2 here… This sounds as an awful joke, but seems to be truth.

  • WOW! That’s GREAT news! I love hearing that our Playstation Family is growing! :)

This is a WONDERFUL way to expand Playstation even further!

    Personally, I’m kind of excited! :) :)

  • @140
wtf are you talking about piracy? No one has been able to break the PS3 yet, and it is my guess that there are a more than couple of years ahead of that becoming anywhere near profitable. A blank, writealbe blu-ray media here probably costs as much as a original game import in local stores, after billion taxes have applied (and that is not even counting the drive to actually write on it).
Even after they get here, if ever, importing through some site will always be the best option.

  • Yay!!! Peru hearts PlayStation!!!!

I’m always been a supporter of the brand in Peru and I’ve done some promoting on my own. Hopefully I’ll get to do it officially as well. Now lets see some billboards and TV ads!!!

And in true peruvian fashion: Viva el PlayStation…CARAJO!!!!

  • Oh, and I did a quick shout-out for the big news on my site: http://www.culturaparalax.com

  • I hope that latin america includes Brazil too.
I really wants too have a Brazilian Playstation Store, it’s terrible have to use a international credit card to buy games.
And it’s kinda difficult find some games in Brazil too.

When you say latin america I really hope that Brazil is on that list

  • Do you guys really think that piracy in Brazil is that much higher than other L.A. countries? Remember we are not talking about US or UK, but Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, Ecuador and so on. So I think that the old “piracy excuse” is no longer valid.

  • Hi everyone, what a great announcement, I hope that Brazil will be included in that list too.

    Thanks

  • There can be no piracy for the PS3 yet, Neil_young2k5, but I don’t know for how long.

I never said Sony’s decision was right, mind you. I only said it was predictable. And I do believe that the only way piracy is to be fought against is if it’s treated as competition, ant that’s why there should be a decent representativeness from Sony here to prevent the abusive price tags we are forced upon by importers.

But I have seen too many mistakes on that area from Sony’s part to believe it’s ever going to happen. It’s a shame, though.

  • @#140

You’re just playing dumb, that’s an old excuse that doesn’t make any sense (never had actually). Even with all the PS1 and PS2 games piracy from the Chinese’s being sold — part in fault due to the way Sony sees the market there — you can bet that the Brazil still is the biggest consumer of original Sony products on the Latin America in general by far.

Also piracy is something global not a local problem of any specific country, so it’s not like you don’t have piracy anywhere else in the world. You have it all over the world, in one way or the other.

And the source of the problem is certainly not there, but in the countries where the law permits piracy sites to operate distributing the master ISO files. So it’s simply not fair to exclude a entire country — specially the biggest and richest country of Latin America — based on a empty argument of a blind man.

There are probably far more PS3 units and PS3 games being sold in Brazil than in in all of the other countries from Latin America put together. And people are buying original consoles and original games for twice, three times the price you pay in the US.

  • Higher prices and lack of presence is what stimulates piracy. I bet with you that if Sony took the time to acknowledge this and took a different stand things would be way different.

If Microsoft had the guts to do it, why Sony doesn’t?

By not doing it they are not only loosing money, costumers, a whole market but stimulating what they fear the most; piracy.

If Sony already has BDs being pressed in there why not have PS3 Games and authorized dealers selling Sony game products officially?

Why not have a PSStore so they can buy things without being forced to use PSStores of other countries? That’s just stupid and senseless.

Not to mention that we are living in one tricky and delicate recession (probably the biggest of our lifetime) and yet Sony is dumping the chance to earn a whole lot of extra bucks based purely in stupidity.

Sorry, but in my opinion by keeping this position and neglecting a country with the proportions of Brazil, Sony is just PlayingStupid®.

    Cheers,
    bd

  • Nice move SONY!!! Now please do something about the Playstation brand in Mexico, stores are still selling the 40 GB PS3 at the $500 price!!!!! and the 360 for the $200 already, so please update the prices in Mexico or do something bout it.

    thx :)

  • You know, maybe it’s worth to say that there is a country in Latin America that DOES NOT speak spanish, but portuguese instead. It’s easy to notice, it’s the biggest one.

When will Sony stop ignoring us and start providing PSN, PS.Store and support for the Brazilian gamers?

  • GO TO CHILE PLAYSTATION!

    ejale!

  • ok hello people from brazil. i live in Brasilia, Distrito Federal. i dont think that this is the official list because on the sony style store here witch was the second one in the contry they say that sony told them that the playstation will be selling on march. i know this doesnt mean we will have a playstation store here but there might be another country in MERCOSUL that will have it and we can import from them much more easier than import from the usa. even if sony dont sell it here the mercosul thing will help us.

  • now talking about the reasons sony may have not put us on the list: we are the only portuguese speaking country on the continent and this may be a problem. second is that they probaly wouldnt get too much money here because as some of you said the playstation 3 is selling here for more than 1 year. and finally, Brazil has a really bad reputation out there by the “pirataria” thing and this may be a problem for them. BUT SONY LET ME TELL YOU: even some people already having the playstation systems here you would get some money if you do publicity and put the prices in a nice level. i dont know how many people have the playstation systems here but almost everybody has the playstation 2 and some people have the playstation 3. the reason for the low selling number is that the playstation is the most expensive one and people really think its the same of xbox 360. But anyway, thanks for giving us at least hope, we will never desist.

  • Sony, Do you know how many psp, ps2 and ps3 there are in Brasil? probably not…we are the biggest country in Latin America…please check some brazilian websites to see how many people has your videogames….

  • I’m from Guatemala and very excited at this news. I hope that the whole US Store transfers to the Latin American Stores and get fresh updates too. I hope Sony accepts international cards for payment and not a prepaid card. Viva Sony, es hora de festejar.

    Wooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!

  • Why does Sony force us, brazilians, to buy PS2s, PSPs and PS3 in US or japan?
For how long should we still wait until we receive honest treatment from Playstation brand in Brazil?
All of my consoles were from US or Japan and it definetively will be worth the money if you spend some time ‘localizing’ and making PSN titles available officially in Brazil.

Sony, please, consider making PSN titles available in Brazil, localizing the software, and hardware (warranty) a top priority.

  • Mira que ya era tiempo que agregaran a latinoamerica al PS Network. Ahora podre conectarme con mis familiares en Mexico City, Colombia, y Argentina. Yeah!!!

Thanks Sony for finally coming full circle in my life! LOL!!! Game On Players!

  • Peru here

  • Wow, after reading this, there’s a lot of comments I would like to make, so please forgive me for this long “editorial”, but I think it can help most of you to get a strong point. XD

I’m from Colombia. I’ve heard about this effort to reach LatinAmerica on the last E3 conference, and I’m glad of knowing that is becoming true, Mark. I will be glad to help in anything.

To help most of the people get how important this news is for us Latin Sony fans, let me resume the gaming situation in my country:
    – The general videogame stores here sell the games at usually very high prices.
    – Sony has the “Sony stores” here since 2006, I think. PlayStation 2 products became available in these stores in 2007. PlayStation 3 products became available around summer 2008. [As you could guess, I had to buy my games from internet.]
Nintendo has an official store since 2007 and sales points in most shopping malls.

    Continues…

  • – Microsoft has an official store, sales points in most shopping malls, and is the only one that has an strong advertising campaign for its console. You see Xbox 360 ads and sales points everywhere here.

Ok, so PlayStation is coming to LatinAmerica. This is obviously a great thing, but there are a lot of issues I would like to adress, at least for my country. Some of you may have alredy mentioned it:

    1. Nintendo and Microsoft have been here from a long time, so Sony will need to catch up.

    2. The prices are a strong issue. As was said before, these games are imported, so the price is usually higher than in US. If I want to buy Super Smash Bros. here at a Carrefour megastore, it would cost me around 76 USD, using the current rates. PS3 costs 560 USD at the Sony Store [And there’s only a 40 GB model]. Fortunately, the promotions of “2 PS2 games for 32 USD” and “2 PS3 ‘maybe unpopular’ games for 64 USD” are making me go back to check the Sony Store.

    3. Ah, of course, what about the retail stores? Does Sony have plans for them?

    Continues…

  • 4.The recession made the USD go too high, and that affects our final prices a lot.

    5. The Playstation Store is going to be important. I’m using an US PSN account, and I don’t think I’ll change it if the LatinAmerican PSN accounts get less content.

    6. I’m sorry to hear that Brazil could be out of the list. I think the language is the biggest barrier for Sony initial plans, but I hope to see them creating a division for the portuguese-speaking soon.

7.Oh, yeah, the great piracy problem. And why people buy pirate stuff? Because the things they want are overpriced, most families can´t afford such a luxury, and the culture here has allowed this to happen. What’s the problem for Sony? That some people aren’t going to buy the PS3 because they will think it costs too much AND you can buy pirated cheap games for the X360 and the Wii. And this is sad, for all.

    Continues…

  • 8. I know I’m asking for something impossible, but I’ll love to see the day when all the gaming content with spanish voice acting would be made by neutral accent voice actors. For those who don’t know, Movies, Anime, and TV series recieve a different dubbing for Spain and for LatinAmerica. But, when you see a game dubbed in spanish, you will know it was only dubbed in Spain, and the Spain accents are barely neutral. And that is just a very bad product placement for this market. I learned to avoid buying games if they come only in spanish. English, please.

Well, there may be a lot of things I could say, but I’ve added enough controversy for this time, and this topic is already very hot; there is a lot to discuss. Thanks for reading :P

  • That’s great. I know there’s lots of people in Latin America who have to buy overpriced PlayStation products because they’re imported. Hope we can also game with them.

  • Muchisimas gracias aqui escribiendo desde Mexico, esperemos que se vengan mejores cosas, cada pais incluido y muchisimas mas cosas para bajar y para tener. Muchisimas gracias denuevo y que viva el Play!

Thank you so much here writing from Mexico, i hope that great times come to us, every country include and much more things to download and have. Thank you so much again and Live the Play!

  • I wonder if by any chance Ecuador will be among the 13 Latin American countries promoting or selling playstation products & games. I would sure hope so.

  • Any idea if this will be working in Uruguay too?? Thanks

  • Wow this is nice … Good going PSN

  • Excelente noticia en Argentina somo miles de fanas de SONY PLAYSTATION. Thank Sony for the new.

  • One more for Brazil here!

  • Thanks, it’s about time. Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Chile should be on that list. I’m dominican, but those are bigger markets. Also, you have a lot of latin american fans here in the US too.

  • You can’t talk about latin america without Brazil (200 million people). Brazil is the biggest market and getting richer, so you know PlayStation is going to Brazil too. There’s no way Brazil will be left out.

  • Here we have more Brazillian comments that all the other countries together… Thats something big… Please Sony !!! Brazil!!! We are waiting for you since PS1!!!!

  • Pues hasta que se da cuenta sony de algo que le estaba fallando porque latino america es un mercado mas grande que el de japon asi que es muy bueno que porfin le den todo el apoyo porque ahi es donde la competencia ha tenido apoyo desde el principio.
