What Makes Red Alert 3 for PS3 the “Ultimate Edition?”

181 0

Hi all, my name is David Seeholzer and I am the Senior Development Director for Command & Conquer Red Alert 3: Ultimate Edition. You might be asking yourself why we are calling it the ‘Ultimate Edition’ of Red Alert 3. I wanted to share some insight into the cool extras and bonus content we are making exclusive for you guys, as well as shed a little light on the development process and our future plans for the title on PS3.

Red Alert found its humble beginnings over a decade ago on PC and has since seen 2 sequels, several expansion packs, and now, is making its debut on the PS3 console. Fortunately the power of the PS3 and the Blu-ray medium has afforded us some extra luxuries that weren’t available to us previously.

The most noticeable difference you’ll see in the Ultimate Edition on PS3 is an increase the visual quality of the game so that it truly stands up to HD Blu-ray definition. A perfect example of this is what you will see in the game’s water. One of the huge new features you’ll see in Red Alert 3 is an increase in naval warfare and amphibious units. Most strategy games in the past have never paid much attention to navy but we’re bringing it to the center. As such, we paid close attention to detail with it and ensured that we maximized its visual aspects, without penalizing game performance even under the most intense of battles.

Another great thing about the PS3 is its use of Blu-ray. We are taking as much advantage as we can of the extra storage space, cramming it full of exclusive features and in game content, including some exclusive new maps for you wage you and your buddies to skirmish battles on over PSN. There is also a ton of videos, giving you a behind the scenes look at the development of the game and the making of our live-action cinematics, a hallmark of the Command & Conquer series. Red Alert 3 features one of the biggest casts in the history of games, including legends like Tim Curry, George Takei, J.K. Simmons, MMA superstars Randy Couture and Gina Carano and a host of starlets including Jenny McCarthy, Kelly Hu, Autumn Reeser and Gemma Atkinson (speaking of which, my personal favorite extra is a look at the “Women of Red Alert 3” video we’ve included). Our Command & Conquer TV team also produced two episodes of the network’s favorite programs, BattleCast PrimeTime and Command School which are totally dedicated to the Ultimate Edition. And to top it all off, we’ve also included the entire Red Alert 3 soundtrack for your listening pleasure, including the theme song “Hellmarch.”

Red Alert 3 also brings another first to strategy games: a fully co-operative campaign. With the PlayStation Network, you and your friends will be able to play through the entire campaign together. There was a strong effort to make sure that each mission was designed for two commanders working together and in making sure that the experience was engaging and challenging. And with the extra time we were given,we were also able to fine tune and balance each mission specifically for the console to ensure that players have the best experience possible.

Of course all of this doesn’t matter if you don’t have a fun game and one of the most important aspects of a fun RTS is how you control your army. After all, you can’t conquer the battlefield, if you can’t get your tanks in first gear. The dev team here has been working on console RTS since Battle for Middle Earth II on through Tiberium Wars and Kane’s Wrath, all for the Xbox 360. Now we’re proud to be bringing what we think is the smoothest, easiest-to-grasp control set up we have ever designed to the PS3 with the CommandStick 2.0 interface. You’ll be able to easily group units, jump around the battlefield, stage attacks and defenses, and manage their bases, all with a couple flicks of the thumbsticks. Once you get your hands on it, you will be crushing noobs in no time.

We’re also planning on supporting Red Alert 3: Ultimate Edition through the PlayStation Store and with downloadable content. Even now as we are finishing the game, we have a team hard at work on content packages and live support for the PS3. We plan on releasing multiple map packs through the PS Store; in fact, the first one will be available for free right about the time the game comes out in March. Following that we should have some real cool content for you to download in the future, but for now check out the Red Alert 3 page on the PS Store for the Ultimate Edition Theme and our first sneak peak trailer of the PS3 version.

This is the first classic RTS for the PS3, and the first strategy game that the development team at EA Los Angeles has brought to this console. We are all proud of how it turned out and we can’t wait to hear what you, the fans, think of it. Please send us your comments and leave us feedback, we love hearing from you and your suggestions!

Check us out on the PS Store, or go to www.redalert3.com for more info.

Thanks again fellow Comrades, see you on the Battlefield!

  • wow, i just bought this game… in my head. im diff gonna make a second purchase when it comes out in day one

  • Im getting this. Cant wait to get the psone games from the psn store. Hope they do this.

  • Especially Gina Carrano comes out in it. im gonna buy on day one.

  • Uh, no thanks. I dont buy anything from EA, because its just all glitches and bugs, and your support service sucks.

  • Awesome, but does it support keyboard and mouse? If not, will we get a demo to get a feel of the controls?

  • Sweet deal. Definitely want to try it out. I’m sure others have asked this, but is it going to support keyboard and mouse?

  • too bad it says EA on it that means can’t get it:(

Bet half this extra stuff is what you guys are planning to sell us as DLC right?

Doubt you even use all the features….k/m???

Here’s hoping this is EA’s last year, let us be rid of the greedy companies

  • @107.
Finally, thank you. A player that see’s EA for what the company is.

  • Wow..This is awesome…C&C Red Alert 3 coming to the PS3!!!I hope they consider bringing C&C Generals to the PS3 too..Generals been my favorite one.I was looking forward to seeing if they would take advantage of the PS3 Keypad’s touch sensitivity to control your army.Wouldn’t that be great..Patch maybe??

  • wow that’s very mature of you to hope thousands of people lose their jobs because they released an OPTIONAL 5 dollar dlc to unlock everything in Skate 2, since you hate EA so much why don’t you delete that FREE Burnout stuff you hypocrite

  • Keyboard and mouse support, PLEASE. There’s no good reason not to include it.

  • woot woot!!!!! cant wait!!!!!! Ill be reserving my copy ASAP!!!!

  • This is a day one purchase for me, I have always been a Red Alert and C&C fan. I really hope Keyboard/Mouse support will come or be announced in the future.

  • @67 quote”And off-topic I am toptally amazed at all the PS3 “gamers” that keep asking about Trophie support. NEWS FLASH PEOPLE, ALL PS3 GAMES HAVE TROPHY SUPPORT FROM JAN 1 2009 ONWARD. Get informed!!”

Actually all games that are approved AFTER Jan 1st are required to have trophy support, according to SCEE. So, with this game not yet finished, it should have trophies. However, since it’s basically a port, it might have already gotten through the trophy phase, but who knows.

As for future titles; it’s not the release date, but the actual approval date that dictates if a game is going to have trophies. For example; AFRO Samurai, released Jan 28, without trophies because it was approved by Sony before Jan 1st.

  • #55 what are you some X-BOT? Seriously the PS3 did too sell more for both EA and ubisoft. It was in both companies quarterly earnings reports. Posted by the companies. This game is going to be tight! Why must ps360 owners favor that pos box? come on now. Glad to be a PS3 – PC owner (M$ hater!) and I will be getting this day 1 ! More features and on my favorite console! I can’t wait for this and killzone2 !!!

  • I’m impressed that finally someone looked to the Blu-Ray advantage to give us some content for the dollar!

I won’t be picking this up as I’m not fond of or good at RTS games, but I like seeing the effort put forth.

    Good job.

  • While I hate to be the negative one (or rather, one of the negative ones,)but I hate what these game companies are doing even more.

What I’m getting tired of is game companies giving us PS3 owners left-overs. I don’t care about the excuses or whatever. They actually expect us to be excited about a game that was an after thought for us? Maybe it’s just me, but why can’t we PS3 owners get treated identically to the other console’s owners? Why must there be exclusive DLC or timed-exclusivity? Why is every game company seemingly catering to the ‘other’ console?

Don’t get me wrong, I own a 360 as well, but it irritates me when the PS3 gets left-overs or shafted completely (ie: the Fallout 3 DLC, Bioshock, GTAIV DLC etc.)

  • Cant wait for this to hit the PS3. I have been waiting for another C&C counsel game since the first Red Alert was on the PS1. Many many hours spent playing that game.

  • Didn’t find MOUSE and KEYBOARD anywhere in the article. Not interested. Back to waiting for Starcraft 2.

  • If this is the “Ultimate Edition” why not keyboard and mouse support. Please EA bring keyboard and mouse support and I’ll buy it on day one or at least promise a patch it please.

  • Include Mouse and Keyboard support and I’m sold. This is coming from a MAC user and a PS3 owner. The game looks very nice.

  • Please add mouse and keyboard support! The controls are so clumsy and slow on console RTS games, play up your advantages on the ps3 version and use keyboard and mouse controls!

  • please include 24bit lossless audio assets! at least for the music, if you please.

also, will local co-op play be in the shipping version?

    lookig forward to our answers,
    thanks!

  • I have wanted to try out the red alert games for some time now, however my computer has never been up to par, it brings be great joy that I will be able to play it in it’s full glory on my ps3, I just hope that the controls are ok. will there be keyboard and mouse support?

  • I can’t wait, so excited for the online matches.

  • As we all noticed mouse and keyboard support should be added to the PS3 version. I’m not going to play a RTS game without a mouse or a keyboard.

  • omg this will be epic…ive been waiting forever!

  • Looks pretty good. I may try this out.

  • Wow! The original Command and Conquer on the PlayStation was brilliant, surprised to see this for the PS3! Thank you! I assume end of March for Europe as well? I’ll probably get this at launch. Haha, best news I’ve head all week.

  • wow! i hate to come off looking like “hater2” (who is actually right about alot of things) but i just checked the price on this at amazon and its $60 for ps3 and only $29 for other system. sorry EA , you lose my purchase on this one :(

service our superior gaming system the same time you take care of other systems.

  • Please add Mouse and Tastatur Support for C&C!!!

    This is a very important!!!

  • all i can say is holy smokes. This game looks amazing. Much better then the dull 360 piece of crap edition. This one looks like a keeper.

  • keyboard/mouse support please!!!

  • @OmegaArchetype
did you read my comments on the first page? I pretty much went off on them for that same reason.

  • No keyboard and mouse support makes this “useless edition” i already have it for my PC and although i absolutely love my PS3 i’d never play a strategy game on a console unless it supports mouse and keyboard :)

  • sounds great

  • Great First day pick up ^_^

  • Mouse and Keyboard please :D

I don’t even want trophies. Just Mouse and Keyboard.

  • What Makes Red Alert 3 for PS3 the “Ultimate Edition?”

It’s the Ultimate Edition because it’s Xbox 360’s left overs. LOL!!!!
Listen and listen good EA. If you are releasing a game that’s multi-platform. Make sure you release it simultaneously. Or else you’re going to get the Bioshock/Eternal Sonata treatment. I’m not one for left overs.

  • I think it’s funny that on the PS Blog survey, some people said that they wanted more 3rd parties to post on the blog….and when they do, they just slag them off.

    Madness.

Thanks for this David…looking forward to it.

  • my brother is a huge fan of PC RTS’s, i like them myself too, I hope there is a demo of this game being released on the PSN, I would want to try it out before buying it. Looking forward.

  • @TheHater2: Yeah, and I’m glad I’m not the only one that feels that way.

While I wouldn’t buy C&C regardless (cause I’m not an RTS fan,) I still despise companies doing what they’re doing. There’s really no excuse for it. It’s practically a fact that a game will make more of a profit (or have a better chance at making a profit,)if it is released on both or all three consoles.

This favoritism (or whatever it truly may be,) gets on my nerves.

  • @140 lcmnick
Yeah we want more third party developers to post on the blog so they can see how we feel about them treating Playstation 3 gamers as trash. If they don’t respect us as gamers, then we are not going to respect them as developers. Plus we don’t need them, they need us. Without our support, buying their games, they would be nothing.

  • hey you guys, I dont know if this was shown already but:

    Will the game run 1080p?
-NO! look at the origional image size for photos they gave us 1280:800

  • “Plus we don’t need them, they need us.”

    Go tell that to Sega.

  • @145 Icmnick
Can you elaborate a little more on your statement?

  • ” Another great thing about the PS3 is its use of Blu-ray. We are taking as much advantage as we can of the extra storage space, cramming it full of exclusive features and in game content, including some exclusive new maps for you wage you and your buddies to skirmish battles on over PSN.”

My question is why aren’t developers doing this for *every* game? It might generate more interest in having an exclusive PS3 version of the game.

    Kudos to the developers.

  • OK, I am not one to get in a fuss about a delayed exclusive for other systems. That delay allowed me to get Bioshock for under $30 new on the PS3 within months.

I would say I am going to buy this if it had keyboard and mouse support. I love RTS games, but my computer is getting old. Without keyboard and mouse support I can only say I will rent it. So for now it will be added to my Gamefly queue. The simple fact that it is a new control scheme means it is not an instant buy.

I’ll admit I didn’t get into early C&C because I had gotten into the Dune games, instead. Same game engine, but sandworms FTW.

Anyway, add/confirm keyboard and mouse support and I will buy this, but without it the game goes to the back of the Gamefly line. I want to support this, but without a trusted control scheme I can only promise to try it.

  • I hope there is mouse and keyboard support. I dont understand why more console games dont have this feature. Epic made it work for unreal tournament. Why not this. This last comment has nothing to do with this pacticular game but wouldnt killzone 2 be sick with the precision of a mouse.

  • And I just remembered something else.

If you are taking advatnage of Blu-Ray and optimizing this for the PS3 then it means we should not have a large, if any, HDD install. Proper data organization on a Blu-Ray will prevent slow loading times that necessitate installs.
