Hi everyone. We’ve been listening to all of your feedback about the PS3 and PSP, and with these next firmware updates (coming soon), we’ve added a number of new features and improved some existing functionality to make your PS3/PSP experience even better.
PSP (v5.00) update
Let’s start with the v5.00 update for PSP. In this version, you’ll notice the addition of the PlayStation Network icon on the XMB. You can now sign up for PlayStation Network, manage your account and access PlayStation Store directly from your PSP – meaning you can download games directly to your PSP while connected via Wi-Fi. Getting games, demos and trailers while on-the-go has never been easier! Check out the screen below.
The current PlayStation Store on the PC will be down in the interim as we take some time to revamp. Don’t worry, it will re-launch soon after we’ve made some tweaks. Please keep in mind, if you already have a PlayStation Network account, simply sign in on your PSP using your existing information. The same account and wallet can be used on PS3 and PSP. You will be able to check out the PlayStation Store on the PSP soon, as we’ll have a video demo featuring Grace Chen posted soon on the Blog.
Update v5.00 adds a sleep timer option that can be used while you are playing music on your PSP. In addition, we’ve added a full screen keyboard option for text entry and have redesigned the background of the XMB. You’ll be able to find all of the information on Firmware v5.00 here once it goes live.
PS3 (v2.50) update
Now on to the PS3 v2.50 update. The latest features/enhancements include:
- Support for the PS3 Official Bluetooth Headset – we’ve told you about the upcoming Bluetooth Headset and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation Bundle on the Blog. This latest firmware installment enables High-Quality (HQ) mode, which delivers clear and wide-band online voice chat. On top of that, an added on-screen indicator shows battery status, volume level and use of HQ mode.
- PlayStation Trophies interface enhancements – I know that many of you are busy collecting trophies and raising your PlayStation Trophy level. This update makes sharing and comparing your trophies with your friends even easier. On 1st part of the profile page you’ll see a symbol under level that represents level and the actual percentage towards the next level along with the existing level meter. The level symbol carries over to the trophy comparison screen where you will now be able to see your level, your friend’s level and the percentage towards the next level for both users along with all of the game by game comparison information you see today.
- Friend status – Offline friends on your Friends list will have information below their avatars that will indicate how long it has been since they were last online.
- Video – This update adds the Scene Search feature similar to the feature on the PSP. Activating this feature while viewing a video on the PS3 will break the video up into scenes that you can quickly access by pressing the X button. You can break the videos into one, two or five minute intervals. In addition, you can now choose to have all of the videos under the video section of the XMB play in sequence. Go to Settings then Video Settings to turn this option on.
- PlayStation Store – We’ve added a redeem codes option right on the store to make it easier to redeem your PlayStation Network Cards and promotion codes. In addition, PlayStation Network Sign Up and Account Management have been redesigned.
- Power Save Settings – You can now set your PS3 and wireless controllers to turn off automatically after set periods of inactivity. Go to Settings then Power Save Settings to turn on these features.
- Background Downloading – You now have the option to set the PS3 to turn off automatically after a background download or installation of content has completed. This option is available when you turn off the system from the button under [Users] while content is being downloaded or installed.
- In-game Screenshots – this tool will allow everyone to capture, share and in other words, immortalize their favorite gameplay moments. This will be supported on a game by game basis. Please check back to find out which games will support this feature.
- In addition to all of the features above there are some additional features and enhancements included in 2.50. Once the update launches, you can read all of the details here.
The support for the Bluetooth Headset will be of particular interest to all of you SOCOM fans. With the “Proximity Chat” feature, SOCOM: Confrontation gameplay is intensified as it allows you to experience high-quality voice playback in full surround sound. Whether the action is near or far, Proximity Chat clearly matches distance to sound effects and voiceovers within the game, putting you in the heart of the action.
Enjoy and please share your thoughts with us.
IGN REVIEW
LittleBigPlanet: 9.5/10
Today is getting better and better. Now for the Socom review.
I agree with TheBoat27 (post 334). it really is a big deal – sony needs to add it.
@ 353
Really?
Out here they’re not in those places..we’ve had them in these gas stations and blockbusters, but now there isn’t really a blockbuster around here, I guess I could call the nearest one. I used to never need these, but now that I’m switching banks I obviously need something and now the place that did have them doesn’t, the only ones they sold were probably to me. I dunno, it kinda sucks. why the hell can’t they have these things at gamestops or something?
i know when viewing pics and songs saved on ps3
let you delete multiple files i think they should add that same option to game files that lets you delete multiple files @ one time
Auto-shut off of controllers after a set amount of time?
Thank you. Millions of drained batteries thank you. Greenpeace thanks you.
P.S.- What took you so long :)
Great update! I hope we can get In Game Music from a Media Server!
This looks nice. Let’s hope the web browser is up next. Flash would be nice. Actually gives you the chance to surf the web..
Supporting more video codecs and containers would be a good feature as well. i.e. .mkv and better divx\xvid.
Otherwise, good work.
divx xvid (sub,txt,srt, etc) subtitles support would be NICE!!!
are we getting a PS3 firmware update with HOME in it anytime soon?????
ok my improvement propositions:
– cross game invites! (A MUST!)
– psn chats should also work while i am playing so i want to talk with my friends while i am playing over the psn chat
– psn eye chats ingame
– ingame music in EVERY GAME!
– faster loading times for the profile (trophies)
– invisible function for the psn
thx
This is great news!
lol sorry to make ur eyes bleed what do u think of the list tho good bad useless??
INGAME CHAT IS A MUST BTW!!! PLEASE SUPPORT THIS
Nice updates but can we PLEASE get continuous video playback on PS3!? The PSP has had this for ages and it makes sense even more on the PS3. Also, video folders/playlists would be nice too for organization.
if u listen to this weeks n4g podcast i think they will be talkin about my list and no i dont work for em
Wow. AWESOME update. Hopefully there will be no ‘bricking’ issues!
Wow. Just wow.
So, you’ve just added nearly every wanted feature… good job!
There are 2 things not there that needs to be:
Allow us to sort our DLC content alphabetically AND by system. It’s how most of us arrange our physical games.
Separate folders/categories on the XMB for Demos and Full games. Less confusion that way.
how bout when? hurry up.
been waiting far too long for features we should have seen a long time ago. why cant i choose rooms to play in with certain criteria? but i digress…
make these fw updates worthwhile…
Scratch the last comment, didn’t see that last bit. FINALLY, now I am happy with my system.
i want on screen headset status indication meters.
i refuse to use a terrible headset though.
thanks again
Will there ever be a firmware update that allows all games to upscale to 1080i/p? There is a huge thread in the forums pertaining to this issue.
Not asking for 1080P NATIVE games just a way to enable the PS3 to upscale all games to your TV’s Native Resolution.
Mine for example is a 2003 Samsung Tantus 1080i/480P tv and i can tell a noticeable difference with the look of the games that upscale from 720P from the ones that downscale from 720P.
Again this isn’t crying about lack of 1080P NATIVE games and for the 720P fanboys out there this isn’t about 720P in the first place before you attack my post. This is for those of us that have 1080I native tv’s. By allowing scaling this won’t affect how your games play on your 720P tv’s just helps those of us out with an HDTV play in HD instead of playing in standard definition.
Other than that love the updates Sony is bringing us.
sounds great. what about a way to lock videos and games with a password so others user on the same PS3 wont be able to see or play them.
Wow – nice updates and good timing. Can’t wait to try out the sleep timer. Will this be available for movie playback as well as downloads?
5 out of 5. simply amazing, I love the new additions all of them! thank you very much. those auto turn off features sound amazing.
peace,
Lh
Awesome Awesome Awesome.
Sony keeps on delivering!
Where were all these requests before? I hope all the people making requests in this post don’t forget to stay persistent in making them. I usually make my requests during the Thursday ps store update. Stick to asking for things that aren’t already available in the ps3 firmware. If enough people continue to make requests until they’re fulfilled, the people who make the firmware will listen.
Wawaweewa, VERY NICE!
IMPORTANT!! VITAL!!!! EMERGENCY 911!!!!
HELLOOOOOOOOOO ERIC????
IT’S OFFICIAL, YOUR KILLING ME, AND EVERYONE ELSE FOR THAT MATTER!
WHERE IS THE UPDATE FOR THE OUT-DATED FLASH PLAYER ALREADY? COME ON !
ERIC,
I have sent in E-MAIL, after E-MAIL, I have called the 800 number time and again, asking, then begging, and finally, PLEADING for you to please, please update the flash player!!
I’m asking you, very nicely, to PLEASE, PLEASE, PRETTY PLEASE, PLEASE UPDATE THE DAMN FLASH PLAYER ALREADY!!!!!!!!
As you can see I am ticked off at you/Sony for this lack of clarity and common sense.
I DON’T UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEM HERE? I REALLY DON’T?
I HAVE TRIED TO GO TO SOME WEB SITES THROUGH YOUR BROWSER, (AS YOU HAVE ADVERTISED, YET I CAN’T ON CERTAIN SITES AS IT WOULD NOT LET ME BECAUSE I DO NOT HAVE THE LATEST FLASH PLAYER FOR MY SYSTEM.
SO IT BRINGS ME TO THE ADOBE WEB SITE. I CLICK ON DOWNLOAD AND NOTHING HAPPENS. SO I CALL SONY ON THE PHONE, AND ASK WHY CAN’T I DOWNLOAD IT TO MY PS3. I AM TOLD ON THE PHONE THAT “SONY HAS NOT APPROVED ADOBE, FOR USE ON THE PS3 SYSTEM”!
EXCUSE ME?
SO I ASK THE MAN IF THE PS3 IS A COMPUTER, AND IT IS “MY” PS3, I SHOULD BE ABLE TO DOWNLOAD WHATEVER THE HELL I LIKE TOI WANT AS IT IS MY PS3.
I AM TOLD AGAIN, “SONY HAS NOT APPROVED ADOBE FOR USE ON THE PS3 SYSTEM”!!
UM HELLO? THEY HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR A DECADE, THEY COME OUT WITH NEW VERSIONS EVERY FEW MONTHS, IT’S ADOBE FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!
YOU ADVERTISE THAT THE PS3 CAN SURF THE WEB.. OK! SO WE TRY AND “BROWSE” THE WEB.., YET WE CAN’T ON MOST SITES CAUSE THE FLASH PLAYER IS OUTDATED?
YOU WILL PUT OUT A FIRMWARE UPDATE TO GIVE US FRIGGAN TROPHIES, YOU PUT OUT A FIRMAWARE UPDATE FOR SOME BROWSER RELATED ISSUES OR STABILITY OR SEEING WHEN THE LAST TIME SOMEONE WAS ON THE PS3 OR WHATEVER.
BUT WE CAN’T GET A UPDATE FOR A FLASH PLAYER?
ERIC, COME ON ALREADY.. GOD, TALK ABOUT A DISSERVICE TO YOUR CUSTOMERS. IT’S BEEN OUT FOR OVER A YEAR AND A HALF, AND YOU DO NOTHING.
AMAZING.
WE NEED A ALERT SOUND FOR MESSEGES! I miss to many chat invites and I get to some messeges to late to reply.
I hope this firmware adds the ability to edit the album info for multiple pieces of data simultaneously as well as the ability to access music while playing any game like Warhawk does. If not, this needs to be done in the next firmware.
nice updates :)
will it show your friends list on the psp?
“In addition to all of the features above there are some additional features and enhancements included in 2.50.”
Like many others have mentioned, it would be great if one of those “additional features” was a Flash or browser update. This is way overdue.
Great news otherwise though. Keep it up!
Great updates for both systems, finally now I can play my videos in sequence on the PS3. Now if you guys can implement the Themes section on the PSP just like the PS3 that would be even greater. I feel that both systems should have the same features if its plausible.
Nice update these a extremely useful features and a few extras to go with will make this a very good u[date :)
This update will be awesome!
@haskell
Most of the web does not require flash. In fact try going here:
http://www.ps3-themes.com/
While your there I would suggest getting these 2 themes:
http://www.ps3-themes.com/downloads/2817-crisiscore2.p3t
http://www.ps3-themes.com/downloads/1499-MGS2.p3t
I think an update for the flash player for the ps3 would be a good idea. However, I believe Sony is focusing on updates that apply to games and their competition from the 360 first. The browser is nice, but not as necessary to gaming as other features are.
@380:
Half of the items on the list are repeated, are already available, or will be available with the next firmware update. Did you even read it yourself?
Wowzers…
Amazing feature list update…
I’m so excited right now…
PS3 AND PSP…nice!
@VenomX
Why would anyone need to use themes while playing a game? I don’t see what this could add to the gaming experience. Please explain.
Is the update coming tomorrow or later this evening? I would think tomorrow?..also TYVM for this update SONY! now for HOME!
I didn’t read every page but the main thing I am dying for is in-movie XMB for Blu-ray and BD status info. I would love for my friends to see that I am watching a BD and the title of the movie, etc. Also need in-movie XMB, I hate going offline to watch a movie. It would be nice to still get alerts and toggle between the movie and XMB at my leisure.
@ross_k
You should add the ability to listen to music stored on the hard drive while playing a game like you can in Warhawk for all games. Let users decide not developers.
You will never be able to upload a custom avatar due to fear of inappropriate content. There are young kids who play you know.
The request to display when a friend was last online is in the upcoming ps3 firmware.
The offline status is already there, it is a red circle with an x through it for your friends. You already have the ability to change your own status.
@57 life rpg great list similar to my own i made mine a couple months ago and have been shopping it around to see what ppl thought ive gotten little to no attention on it but good stuff tho just thought id shout u out
@gate1975mlm
Support for all wmv files is already there
Wow…even with an update people are still complaining for more.
That in-game screen grab is a great feature, will make grabbing my Rock Band scores a breeze now.
@OICU812
The ability to appear offline is already there.
@384, I’m with ya !!!!
It’s everything we’ve ever wanted… AND MORE!
Thanks for keeping up with users’ demands and actually following up on all the feedback we’re constantly throwing your way, guys. I know it can’t be easy.
